Black Friday Trona Railfanning

- Happy holidays everyone! This year's holiday video is a trip my father and I took out to the Trona over Black Friday! The TRC got going in the afternoon but had to flag a grade crossing that had one of its crossing signals stolen, so both its trip up to Searles and the flagging are shown! Once it got up to Searles the UP local from Mojave was waiting for it, and our cameras spend a fair bit of time covering the switching action as well! Thanks for making 2021 a great year for this channel everybody!

Camera placements makes this video like a work of art. Good use of natural light makes the difference between a good video and a great video. Kudos!
Wow 👌👌 never seen before #top class
Amazing footage! Nice to see all the vintage SP locomotives.
Visited it a couple years back, just to listen to those beautiful old EMD’s ❤
Mesmerisingly beautiful video, I love the long focal length on these shots. America has such incredible landscape.
Nice!
OH MY GOD.....LOVE THAT LASHUP FROM 1990 ...sd 40 -2 ...40 -t-2 ...40 t-2...SD-40...40-2..... 40 - t-2 LOONG LIVE THE TRONA!!!Happy New Year 2022!
I can remember the Trona when it had a brace of Baldwin diesels. Thy always put on a good show. When they arrived at Mojave the real show began.
this is great Americana. Thank you. I bit of desert mystique, a bit of Mad Max, a bit of American space, the special trains, the light.
Good stuff.
Gotta love that low angle winter sun, nice stuff!
I went through there last July leaving Death Valley
and it has to be one of the weirdest towns I have ever visited. 50% of the town was abandoned and it had less amenities than a lot of places with a fraction of the population (only 1 gas station and 1 restaurant).
I like seeing the old SP locos!
I think I was in grade school the last time I saw SP units irl.
There are still a few patched SP units in use by UP. I think there are no more unpatched though.
Brilliant video my favourite shot is the train coming up the hill.
This is one of my all time favorate railfanning videos!
Awesome . . .
New to your Channel and Enjoyed seeing the Switching taking place and Ex SP and UP Units. 👍
Welcome! I love filming switching so there's quite a lot of it on here! Most of the Trona videos have sections dedicated to them switching out Searles
You Are Still Bringing Us Amazing Video I Love Your 4 hr 5hr Video That Was Fantastic You Sould Get A Award For All Your Filming Thanks
Nice. I actually got to Black Friday Railfan for the first time this year.
Thanks for sharing. As others have commented wonderful filming. Really scenic.
Love those Trona consists!
Great video.
Many thanks. Really enjoyed that. No deserts here in the Emerald Isle!
Amazing catch. Greetings from India
Wow!. Even Uncle Pete showed up with a flock of big six axle EMD's. Great video and have Merry Christmas and a great New Year.
20:09 ~ Love that T-Bird..
Great video...
this is awesome
This footage looks old and new at the same time
Cool desert scenery! Grew up in the desert, but relocated to the southeast! Now I see green! Nice shots!
Very well Filmed! I must get the camera out again!
Hey thanks! Love your content too :D
Excellent video, thank goodness we have such wonderful footage of train to see us through these difficult time, Greetings and thanks from France ❤️
Great shots!
Hey thanks!! Love your stuff too :D
@@RailfanJunction Thanks! I've been through that area many times and seen this train, but never had a chance to film it. Hopefully one day.
Great rail movie! Good work! Thumbs Up
Greetings from Romania and Merry Christmas

Choo choo! I'm a train and I approve this video!!!!
Was there at Trona Pinnacles this january 2022. Found about ten rail cars derailed, coal spilled all over. derail happened a while before as the track had been repaired, but those big coal hopper cars on their side, some with wheels and trucks mangled was a neat sight to see. got a piece of coal from the wreck!
I was one of the guys that had to fix the track. Over 1500 feet had to be tore out to the roadbed and everything replaced.
@@michaelball760 Are those cars still down along the ROW? Saw the photos of the damage. Did not look to be a fun job for you.
Awesome👍👍
Great camera shoot brother
Very nice videoooooooooooo 👍👍
Greetings from Spain
Your vid’s are just plain awesome brother thanks for what you do!
Awesome footage! You have an awesome camera. It’s so clear. 🎥💯
Thanks! HDV tapes still look great!
@@RailfanJunction you’re welcome.
HDV? Cool! I still use mine.
That week was the dustiest I think I've seen it in my entire time in the desert. It's getting drenched this week!
This video, It look's like something out of Cyberpunk...
Excellent 👍
At 8:50 the horns honking were answered with loud meows from my cat
Bleak desert scenery, but cool trains!
Thanks!!
I ❤train👌
I think it’s bad ass to see all of the Southern Pacific units
Nice video brother.
From Indonesia
great video, nice work 🚂🚂🚂🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋
Nice job leaving it zoomed.
amazing area
Nice video 👍
In Sumatra, usually the number of coal carriages is around 60 carriages, for the island of Java the number of container carriages is only up to 30 carriages
That's interesting! Out here train length is usually dictated by customer need
The vantage points you use make your videos stand out amongst the rest 👍
Great video. The UP consist of 70M’s at 18:25 almost seems like a sales pitch to Trona. UP is retiring those and you never see 4 at once. Coincidence??
UP has been using SD70Ms in local/secondary service throughout California for about ten years now. I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon.
It’s nice to see a quartet of them here; the SD70M is the modern SD40-2 we didn’t realize we had.
I agree with you, it would be wild to see this type of locomotive purchased by the Trona Railway Company.
UP Roseville primarily uses triplets of SD59MX’s for the bigger locals/turns and GP40’s or GP22-T4 for smaller jobs.
The 70Ms have been rare in Nor Cal for several years now. I’m not sure if the Roseville roundhouse has 4 that they could lash up if they wanted to.
WHAT'S UP FRIEND. I CONGRATULATE YOU FOR SUCH AN EXTRAORDINARY VIDEO, THE LOCATIONS, YOUR MAGNIFICENT SHOTS, BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES, IT IS A FORTUNE TO BE ABLE TO BE IN THOSE PLACES, THANK YOU FOR SHARING. BEST REGARDS.

Is there a rule in the USA that when a rail crossing gate is not working do they have to use flares for safety??
You put the fusse out on each side of the crossing to protect the train as it rolls over the crossing. It is a liability sort of thing.
There shouldn't need to be any "rule" for non working gates, nor for any unprotected crossing either.
These (so-called) "public" road /rail crossings are purely a "privilege" (to allow you to get across the rails) - not a right, as the railway owns the entire rail corridor, with the road ending at the railway boundary - and restarting again - on the boundary on the opposite side, thus - you are (actually) trespassing if you interfere with any rail vehicle, train / engine or wagon etc., that is using that crossing.
By interfering, I mean anyone forcing an oncoming train to emergency stop (or go through you if it cannot be stopped) by you stopping on the tracks (and get hit) - or if a train is already there and you ignorantly / simply DRIVE (blindly) into the side of a train - YOU are trespassing at that instant.
Normally, if you use the crossings as intended - you stop for ALL trains, and only proceed across the road/rail crossing AFTER any train (you see there) leaves the crossing FIRST, OR if a train is SEEN to be approaching when you arrive, or if no trains in view for several miles either side, you may cross then, ONLY if you can do so safely.
Thus - these flares are simply an additional indicator (that a train is about to, or IS ALREADY crossing) - to allow your own safe use - of the railway crossing.
Almost everywhere else in the world, if YOU fail to use your own eyes (at an active railway crossing - whether protected by bells/lights barrier arms or simple St Andrews Signs or tiny wee placards that say - railway.
IF YOU FAIL to see (possible conflicts of interest between a BIG HUGE train & yourself) then whatever you are doing when driving BLINDLY along - without due care and attention to the safety of yourself - then it's your problem.
@@jeremymountain2383 Um - surely it's there to protect the IDIOTS and STUPID people from injuring themselves, by NOT LOOKING at the BIG TRAIN about to cross, (or which is already crossing) - nothing to do with "protecting the train" - as how hurt can a TRAIN ever get - when an insect (small road vehicle) smashes itself into the side of a train - as it passes ?
22:46 cool to clearly read Southern Pacific on TRC's 2005; nice consist!
According to their roster got 5 SD40-2R ex ATSF+1ex SCL + 1 SD40M-2 ex SCL
Thanks tons for the video👏👏👏👏👏

Great video Andrew
Wow
seems like the sun out there is very harsh on the locomotives
Bogen hex plates, interesting; I can tell you’re old school. I have a plethora of these myself. I wouldn’t say they’re the best, but once you get into a system…
Definitely! They work for what I use them for - I don't like modern fluid-head tripods because they're difficult to quickly adjust/level and most of the time I only have about a minute or two to set up a shot when I'm chasing something, sometimes even less!
Nicely done. I'm hooked, hit liked and subscribe.
Most cars have no graffiti that is such a beautiful sight to see.
Not yet anyway
4:43 - ?
What the hell is that !!
Is it a train-spotters paradise, or a freedom camper's (free parking) area - or is it some rural outback adventure event (such as an organized motor cross trail riding event, or for a mountain bike rider's course etc.,) - as there sure are a LOT of motor homes out there..
Offroaders go and camp on BLM land a lot during holidays out in California. Just a bunch of folks camping and offroading for their weekend off.
The camera guys must be working with the train crews to get these great shots. You know, I thought I heard music on this clip, but it actually came from somewhere close by
27:28-I almost assumed the RV was in the path of the train
Also what's the go with the flares? Seems a bit overkill?
Basically someone had stolen a crossing flasher and by US law "flagging" a crossing with flares is required when one or more crossing flashers is out of service.
Love your channel. I'm replicating Trona / UP interchange in Run8 train simulator and have few questions
1) How many loaded hopper cars do the 6 - SD 40 bring in this video, I tried counting but the entire consist is never in one shot
2) Are those empty or loaded tanker cars, from my research Trona pick up loaded acid tanker cars and drops off empty ones at Searles.
Cheers
Sulfuric acid tank cars should be empty on the return trip, and I believe there were 31 loaded hoppers on that trip!
@@RailfanJunction Appreciate the information.
Awesome! What kind of video camera do you use? Great video!
Thanks! I use a Canon XHA-1S!
Hi - I have often wondered, what with all the video cameras out there, filming train after train.
How many in the USA have filmed the hobo's rail-riding on freight cars?
Surely they would be popping their heads out to do a spot of filming themselves, as they ride along, or at level crossings, any dashcam's showing someone's head or body lying along the end of wagons, or in the openings of hopper cars etc?
We can see enough of these (trespassing) rail riders, in video's here on RUclips, so where are the railfan's videos - showing these people (illegally) riding along mid way through a general manifest train?
I've filmed several across the last couple of decades, I can't remember what videos they're in specifically but if you do some digging on my channel you'd probably find the shots. It isn't as common a practice in the states as it is in other countries for a variety of reasons (both socio-economic and railroad-related) and generally when I've seen folks ride on freight cars they're trying to avoid being filmed, not pose. Most train riders that I've seen aren't vloggers (despite what RUclips may make you think, though personally I love watching shiey's videos in particular as they travel to some fascinating locations) so there's no need to film themselves, really.
Beautiful vid, (and total EMD porn, THREE old tunnel units!) Never seen the flares used a grade crossings like that, maybe because of all the chemicals they are carrying?
Amazing video!! When is the best time/day to go to the Trona Railway?
Weekdays in the afternoon!
@@RailfanJunction Awesome, thanks man!
Awesome footage. What was with the flares at the grade crossing?
You put the fusse out on each side of crossing to protect the train as it rolls over the crossing. It is a liability sort of thing.
All that sulfuric acid…do you know if that is inbound or outbound to/from Searles?
really heavy Train isnt it ?

Nice video! Why are the tracks not electrified? Why do such short trains require 6 locomotives? Are they that weak? Why are they driving so slowly?
3000 Horsepower a piece, grades are pretty severe on the line. Most railroads in the US (freight ones anyways) aren't electrified due to the high cost of building and maintaining catenary and associated equipment (such as substations) and electricity, so outside of a few mine-to-powerplant railroads that can supply their own coal it really isn't practical out here. Also electricity is expensive as hell in California.
@@RailfanJunction Thank you, this is interesting. 3000 horsepower is really powerful.
2:24 - Oh how sad, no "hobo-hotel" being towed along at the end of the train (surely they could figure out a way - to have a basic motorized flat-top, or a small "covered" motor trolley unit, to attach either by rope, or even by knuckle coupler - to the rear of trains).
Be a LOT safer for train hoppers, to have their own small (manually removable) motorized unit, to catch up too - and hook onto the rear of trains, instead of doing the (always a very unsafe dangerous practice) "hot-jump" of riding suicide well-side container wagons or getting "trapped" in a box car that had a door slide shut on them - or if they were "involved" in a mid-train derailment?
Getting a tow, at the very end of the train, would be the safest place for those itinerant HOBO travelers, who didn't want to pay for a ticket, or just wanted to "ride illegally?.
Not all that difficult to make a hand-cart (with a wee motor on it to catch a slow train with) - that can be self-towed by rope etc., behind these trains - as after all, the rear of trains is usually fully protected at rail-crossings (road crossing people would easily see a "cart" being towed along at the rear of a train) - and if pulling into a crossing loop - they always tend to pull well into the loop - meaning that your "tow-along" would be pulled in too, safe from the next crossing train (in either direction)..
Your only problem would be - if you "detached" without checking behind for a following train (as that would simply roll right-on over you)
Who steals one signal lenz???Weird things happen in the desert.
there should be a dang law against these desert racers from kicking up clouds of dust near rail workers. I am very angry!
That has to be one of the dumbest things I've read in a YT comment to date..
@@gotsteem Hey.. go out to that area and take a week day after day to breath in all that dust there. I promise you, you'll have health problems. Think of these rail workers! They're the ones responsible for making sure we get our goods to points of places.
@@sherlocksteve9109 The only thing they haul out of Trona is a little salt and a whole lot of borax (remember 20 mule team?) Yeah, it comes
from there. Trona isn't the hub of 'our goods' Steve. This is also a once or twice a month delivery to Union Pacific.
The human body is a remarkable thing. It has an entire mechanism to deal with dust inhalation. The TRC workers could use dust masks
if they wanted to but, they rarely encounter such high traffic off road vehicles and this isn't even mentioning the horrific winds they get up
there in the desert. The place is mostly dead during the week. I'd wager this was weekend off road traffic. The town of Trona had barely 50
people living there the last time I was there camping, and they roll up their sidewalks at 8:00pm just like Randsburg.
I have been out there for the better part of a week, many, many times. It's a great place to operate Amateur Radio, camp and drink beer.
All I needed to do was blow my nose a couple of extra times if it got dusty..
Lighten up. You've been hanging out with Democrats too much. The world isn't coming to an end and we don't need any more dang laws.
@@gotsteem OK.. I'll take your word for it! *gold star you!*
@@gotsteem there isnt 50 people. More like 1500. And we haul more than salt and borax. I bet some stuff in your house was made from the raw materials hauled out of here.

I wonder how bent the rails got after the pair of july earthquakes a few years back
Was wondering the same exact thing.
I work on the track crew for the TRC. We had one section almost 50 yards long sink 3 feet and another farther out on the main got shoved over about 27 inches when the fault ripped right through the track.
@@michaelball760 thanks for the reply. I have one more question. Did everybody keep saying it's not my fault this happened. Must be your fault. With daily reports to headquarters also starting out. It's not our fault. That could lead to tee shirts with that on it. Reflective stripes on work shirts resewn to include the fault offsetting the stripes.

Hearing that bell ringing sure is kinda obnoxious -- ya shut off the sound -- would love to hear the motors sound more though
That's not something I can control unfortunately.

That's a flare used to protect the grade crossing and alert cars that a train is approaching in place of a working crossing flasher, one of which was stolen at that location.
