4K: BNSF and Union Pacific Freight Trains in the Cajon Pass - Foreign Power, CNW Leader, & More!

- Presented in 4K! Located 60 miles East of Los Angeles, the world famous Cajon Pass is known for it steep, intense, and scenic railroad action. Nestled between Victorville and San Bernardino in the San Bernardino Mountain Range, both Union Pacific and BNSF trains traverse the 2.2% grades of the pass. BNSF's Cajon Subdivision offers 3 mainline tracks that both BNSF and Union Pacific trains use, while the Union Pacific also hosts its Palmdale Cutoff Mojave Subdivision line, exclusively for their trains. Over the past few months, I've collected some footage from around the Cajon Pass. Been lucky to get awesome action, and awesome power as well!
Highlighting the video, in early January 2018 Union Pacific sent a very special treat in the early morning hours. UP 6706 was on point of an empty grain train traveling from Texas to Idaho, with a stopover in Arizona to unload the product. Formerly CNW 8804, the AC44CW is one of the very last remaining engines with the original CNW paint scheme, untouched by the Union Pacific! Along with a friend, we chased this train up the Cajon Pass starting in the Rialto area of the Palmdale Subdivision. After getting on the BNSF at Keenbrooke, the empty grain train headed up the pass and then towards Yermo.
Also included is various BNSF and Union Pacific action along the 3 mainlines of the Cajon Subdivision. Sullivan's Curve located near the middle of the pass is one famous area featured, which offers stunning views as the tracks curve around the rocks and hills of the pass. Got lucky with an awesome train race between the BARWAT and Kaiser Hauler, as well as the Union Pacific North Platte manifest with an awesome consist!
Overall, I only scratched the surface of the amazing Cajon Pass in this video. There's just so many unique and scenic places, the possibilities are endless!
Thanks for watching!

40 some years back my girl-friend and I would go up to the pass with a picnic lunch and watch trains. Great fun.
My son is a conductor for BNSF and has been on the San Bernardino to Barstow run many times through the Cajon Pass. Now he's up north in Bakersfield.
Many times! How impressive of your son!
Absolutely amazing footage, thank you for sharing.
I live in Maryland and I've been to Cajon 5 times. It's one of the GREAT train watching spots in America not only for the scenery, but for the volume. The 2 trains "racing" each other at 4:28 was spectacular!
I love your enthusiasm and fresh perspective. I've driven over Cajon pass maybe 200+ times, so I'm a bit jaded, but the dirt trails running high over the pass do make for nice views, like the bend with the two trains.

Watching videos from the Cajon Pass makes me homesick! My favorite place to watch trains.
At 4:27 Two freight trains traveling in the same direction, side by side! Truly spectacular! At 5:45 Three trains at the same time! At 20:10 Two freight trains side by side and traveling in different directions! At 20:25 Three more trains at the same time!
Respect for the Guys keeping that long Iron Snail under Control over such a steep Canyon. The BNSF Trains are amazing, I like the Design and seeing what a long Convoy they pull up and down is awesome. Greetings from Germany where the Trains are way shorter ;)
I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the many trains on this video. Trains pulling the grade in run 8 and trains descending the grade in dynamic braking. Trains passing or meeting one another. This old retired locomotive engineer just loved it. Keep em coming!👍❤️
Love the beautiful scenery!! The awesome length of the UP trains and its great motive power! Love the Union Pacific Railroad, truly Building America!🇺🇸
Great video! Brings back sweet memories from my childhood! We used to travel that route (138) every weekend!
OMG what beautiful landscapes and mighty trains . That Rio Grande loco was just awesome . Australia is a big country but we don’t have this amazing landscape . Cheers from Australia .
Go hip u know what

Really nice views! As much fun as they are to watch I like to play these videos in the other room while I'm working with the big subwoofer. Rail ambiance for the work day!
That's the best mix bag video I've seen yet! Rio Grande, huge mixed freight, KCS and CSX! What the hex!? Out here? And a warbonnet to boot and so much more.
Very Impressive video of the trains and scenario!
Do you know what America needs? More trains!
The race at Sullivan's Curve at 4:15, now I'm jealous... Lol, awesome content!
Actually cajon pass is northeast of LA.
I've driven that pass hundreds of times in a big truck, both northbound & southbound.
Don't forget, that pass is also the site of a very deadly train crash many years ago.
Fabulous. Excellent work.
great train video
Great Video, thanks for sharing
The Union Pacific comes down the Mojave Subdivision out of Lancaster and Palmdale into Colton Yard. The BNSF comes down the Cajon Subdivision out of Barstow into San Bernardino. The Alhambra and Yuma Subs are Union Pacific. The Yuma Sub comes out of Yuma Arizona to Colton. The Alhambra Sub comes out of Colton to downtown Los Angeles. The San Bernardino Sub is BNSF. It runs from San Bernardino to the Alameda Corridor, and connect to the River Sub via the Redondo Fly Over southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
Being a retired STO in mountain area in PA, I love watching trains on grade being pushed, real railroading.
Great show!!

I see that long train being pulled up that grade with just a few locomotives, around those bends, and I don't know how it is possible!
Impresionante. Muy buen trabajo gracias
Sensacional guerreiros!! 👏👏
Great views of the desert. This has to be one busiest rail corridor in the country.
I also love trains
Show ❤ apaixonado por trens.
Nice video Michael!
Thanks Rhett!
Nice catch with the patched out ex Santa Fe SD75.
Got to love the irony of a former Santa Fe (then later in life) former BNSF SD75M that was sold off to Progressive Rail Leasing ending up under lease operating right back on the same trackage it was sold off from. Go figure...
Great action. Excellent video.

Such great RR action. Here in the PNW it is all pumpkins and armor yellow. Pretty boring. Love seeing the variety from road names past, especially the warbonnets.
Very nice video. Congratulations!!!!

Me-Watching in 720p due to poor connection
Thanks Michael. I've sat in Cajon pass close to the tracks watching trains go by. Some may think it's silly, but I enjoy it as you do. Appreciate the footage!
Please, the name of the film. The plot is: A long freight train running through the frame of film. A woman and a man couldn't hear each other because of the noise. They are standing the opposite sides of the moving long freight train. Probable years of production: 70-80s, the guy had a car. These scene is in the end of the film. Please, help with the title. Thanks
You are a good videographer....

Great shots at 4:29! I was so hoping that someone had a video from Sullivan's curve of that race. That ex CNW engine must have gone through before I showed up. Either way, great day for railfanning.
Thank you, that was one epic race indeed. The CNW shots were actually from January.
These trains and routes exclusive for freights fascinating
Great trains, great locations, great photography, loved every second

oh Cajon pass. one of the most and if not the most dangerous railroad pass in the United states. Home to not one, not two, but three Runaway train disasters.
Beautiful scenery!
Me gusta ver esos video de trenes por que de niño los veías cargando caña de azúcar en mi país República dominicana
Just discovered your Channel. Fantastic Videos, makes our Freight Trains in UK look pathetic, lucky to get more than 25 cars on ours & rarely a double-header. ROGER 😎 UK 🇬🇧
This gives me anxiety because so many trains derailed here
Great video! Cajon Pass is awesome. Untouched is a bit a stretch though for UP 6706, with your description I was hoping for a clear C&NW logo still on it.
Pp
Very longest freight trains run to Cajon Pass.
É um Baita dum trem vou voltar aqui parabéns 👀
