I honestly cried watching that young girl in the pageant. These people have had their land, language, culture and personhood stolen from them, but are fighting to reclaim it. In that pageant, even if to a smallish audience, the young girls were not judged by their appearance but rather performing their traditions to others who will appreciate them, keeping them alive in the process. May they all have bright futures.
I'm not of Native American ancestry but I can appreciate the beauty and complexity of the Navajo and their desire to maintain their identity in an ever changing world!
Respect to Native Americans from Ireland, They helped The Irish when we had a famine by sending money to feed us. when the English sent any food that could grow & all the livestock over to England. Respect ❤
Hey a Navajo here! I just wanna say that your country actually helped out the Native American community when we were going through the hardest part of COVID. Bc of the deed that my ancestors did with the famine, you guys setted up a huge donation that was very helpful for our elders and those with no job. So thank you for what yall contributed to our people ☺️
I'm English and visited Canyon de Chelly in 1989. I was at the river near sunset and about to walk back to the top when a group of Navajo of all ages started to descend the side of the canyon while singing. Their song echoed and resonated around the canyon in a sweeping sound and remains one of the most beautiful and evocative things I've ever heard. Somehow it felt like a people reaching across the ages to the heart of the human condition.
Abandoned Indian. I almost started crying when she said that. My great grandmother was full blood Native American, but she was so ashamed of it that she burned all her papers that connected her with any reservation. A lot of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have done research to try too figure out at least what tribe she belonged to, but there are a lot of reservations in New Mexico alone. I just wish I could understand where I came from and the beautiful culture my great grandma left behind. I don't think I have enough native blood at this point for it to matter, but my brother and I keep looking

My grandma's grandma left her husband and children in AR ,,,,hoping for a better life for them. She went to a reservation in OK. When my grandma was about 8-10 years old they traveled by covered wagon to OK. So HER mom could visit her mom. It was done over several months. My granny said it was a wonderful time for her.
I am not navajo, but I grew up there and have family that still lives in chinle. It's so beautiful, these young ladies are wonderful. I hope they truly do continue to preserve their culture. Nizhoni!!
cried really hard while watching this. I want to connect and get to know more about my culture. I want to speak Navajo and do grass dance, but I feel like I'm trapped and I dont know where to start. I live off the reservation away from my grandparents and it seems like my parents arent doing anything to help me connect, but I am trying.. I love my culture so much. 💚💚💚

Hey! During COVID, Radmilla Cody holded classes for young students where she reads to them virtually and she has key Navajo words that she phrases out in the meetings. I recommend that and if you’re able to, take classes from community colleges; I am starting late on learning Navajo and thankfully my school has Navajo classes. Schools include: Maricopa CC, ASU, UofA, NAU, schools in Utah, UNM, other schools in NM, and even Stanford! There is also textbooks to follow along online and you can get Rosetta Stone. I wish you good luck on your Navajo language journey 😊
That girl in the green dress... her song brought me to tears. Now, I'm not a crier, but something touched me even though I don't know the words to her song. I hope she never stops singing.
Ramon mendez I can tell difference between Natives and Mexicans. Mexicans have paler skin and have that Spainish dark hair and mustaches for the men. How could a whole country let their women be subjugated like that.

I’m very proud that National Geographic would make a video of my culture, this canyon is very beautiful with so much stories from our ancestors, I’m very proud to be a Navajo, and keeping this tradition strong
26 seconds in and my heart is already breaking at how beautiful this video is. I desperately hope that Native American folk tradition and culture can make a strong comeback. Everyone should be able to love where they come from and who they are.

Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 80's. Would go to Chinle and Many Farms, AZ. My family lives off the rim of Canyon De Chelly. Actually called Canyon Del Muerto. The best summers I ever had riding in trucks through the watery canyon and hiking. The nature and wildlife was spectacular. BBQ's and camping was so fun. My Grandpa Nelson Draper was recruited off the Reservation and joined the US Marines in 1942. His Brother Teddy Draper and Himself were Navajo Code Talkers in WWII. Upon his discharge from the US Marines he moved his family to California where I was raised. Grandpa worked a Civil Service job at a Marine Base in Barstow, CA. My wife is Navajo from Shiprock, NM. Those summer vacations in the 80's were some of the best times of my life.
Kira Yagami Kira, would you be willing to teach a non Navajo? I am Mohawk and my lineage & his wisdom died with my grandfather. I am only less than a quarter and it speaks so deeply to me, as I was raised in and within nature until 18 and beyond, though when he passed the teachings stopped. Many blessings x
I don't know if it's for every other tribe or nation, but I am an abandoned Indian trying to find out my tribes and what roots i come from. I am black with native ancestry. I need help 😔
Beautiful video, I love seeing ancient cultures still being upheld and respected. I hope they continue to learn and pass down this knowledge to future generations. Cultures like this shouldn't be lost and it makes me sad to think of all those who lost their chance to really learn more due to white societal expectations. Amazing job ladies!
You don't have to watch it on TV per se to know it happens and to know what it looks like. Especially since it's something talked about in magazines, in various news outlets, etc. It's one of those topics that many, many people seem to know about.
Proud to be Taachini!! Watching the girls in the canyon yelling brought back many memories of my childhood in the canyon... spider rock is truly sacred land to us.
These girls are so blessed to have a Daddy & Gma to teach them about their culture & traditions with pride. I hope the one girl's wish comes true. That 100 years from now, her grandchildren & great-grandchildren will be taught the same stories & traditions. May it go on much longer than 100 years!
I wish I could meet one day Natives from the US or Canada, this is my lifelong dream. As long as I remember I admire and respect Natives for the way they love their culture, languages, and love & respect for nature that they have. Long life to Natives, amen!
This film is so beautiful. Everything in it is beautiful. The people, the canyon, the songs, the traditions and the way the people care about them. Simply beautiful.
Someone offer them a record deal!! These girls need to be heard !! Beautiful voices I definitely felt this in my back and gave me chills!! Such a beautiful mini documentary 💕
Our history is stained with such negativity, I'm glad these girls get the chance to keep their culture alive. I believe in celebrating different cultures and getting the chance to be different because that's what is beautiful.
I was there at Canyon de Chilly last week on May 13 and May 14. Love the Navajo people. Stayed over nite at Navajo town Chinle. Learned so much about the history and culture. Kind people. Inspiring. Beautiful country. If you are touring, take the four hour Jeep drive . They also sell beautiful Navajo jewelry at the valley.
vickie g Kinda hard to do that though. Since there is a very low Native American population (you’re most likely able to find someone with some percentage of Native American than a pure Native American)
Thank you for this video. It’s vital that these cultures do not die out and the young people know the richness of their heritage. Many blessings from UK 🇬🇧
I absolutely love this video. I have a lot of respect for Native American culture, I really admire it and how they keep fighting to keep their culture alive. I wish history would have been in their favor, every time I learn and read more about their history I get really upset. Love from Málaga in Andalucía, Spain, to all Native Americans!
Your ancestors are speaking through you to allow you to know about them because they run through your veins, blood and DNA.....they are technically still here, your keep them here by being alive!!!
Hi :) Maybe you can help me, I'm planning to visit US next year, and I would like to visit reservation or other place significant to you native americans. I'm fascinated by your culture, how close you are with nature, values, philosphy. I would love to feel that indigenous spirit, at least once in my life. So if you have any idead where I could go to learn more please let me know. Love from Poland :)
I am a Navajo and I learned a lot from my grandma also. I was in the pageant but lost I am still great full to have learned my clan and language at a very early age.
The moment she said Abandoned Indian I felt a heaviness in my heart. My grandmother may not have shared the Din’e ways but I feel the ancestors. Our paths will join again 🤗 Thank you for this video and sharing these amazing little lights that will continue on the Ancestors ways.
Good job, dad. I'm from Europe so I don't know much about native traditions. But I do know that the people from my continent have been the death of the natives of the Americas. So much culture history got lost. I'm very glad to see that it's still being kept alive. I wish you the best and hope you and your people and other tribes will keep thriving for generations to come.
Alaska Native just won Miss Universe 2021........but I agree these girls are already miss Universe s They are beautiful inside and out My eldest son married a half Navajo woman. My youngest son Married a half Alaskan Native who also is Polynesian but raised in Bethel Alaska..
Please don't ever lose your culture. You are so special. I have always been so inspired by the native American culture, please keep all your traditions alive and be very proudful. I have tears in my eyes the thought of native American traditions of ever dying out. I wish with all my heart that the government would do better for you. We take better care of people that come into America than the original people here who were almost wiped out in many different kinds of ways. You deserve to be revered. Love and respect to all native Americans.
this movie touched me very much. I often had tears in my eyes. I hope this family knows how strong they are and that they will never give up on being how they are like. They know whats worthfull for them and they involve it in their day every day. What a difference to a lot other people from Europe or else.
Beautiful singing. I'm latino but still proud of natives who take their time out to learn their language & keep their culture alive. Love & respect for ✊
Reminds me so much of the joiking sung by my people, the Sámi people of Northern Fennoscandia. Such a beautiful video and a great insight into the lives of our American cousins
·3Codeine&Sprite3· ? 1- We are all from some one else, and some where else, Fugitives from the negative energy that feeds on and sucks dry your soul. This is true of all tribes across the globe. 2- The Navajo, Šináglegleǧa (In my Language) have their very own culture and it douse not resemble the Siberian mongoloids or Australian Aborigines. Culture defines who a people are, not genetics. (Genetics at best describe from whom a people come. The Celts, the Scandinavians, the Britons, and the Russians, are not the same people because their cultures are different, not their genetics. ) 3- Šináglegleǧa have been there in the Southwest by some Scientist limited understanding 12,000. Much longer by other accounts. In this globe of Fugitives, and Migrants, any people who have been in one spot practicing their unique culture for (OMG) 10,000 years before Christ even walked the earth, get to be considered NATIVE to that place. Šináglegleǧa are a Noble and beautiful tribe of people. Native to Turtle Island, (what you call North America), and no drug addled negative mind, or capitalistic agenda driven plan, or dark stupidity, can take away or change the shining truth of it. May they survive the apocalypse that has befallen them, with their spirit strong and their culture intact. Nice short Video National Geographic, I'm happily Surprised at it.

I believe I am an abandoned native,One night I had a vivid dream about two native grandparents dressed in their traditional clothes. They spoke to me, you are finally here. We having calling you ( or we have been waiting) for a long time. I pray to the great spirit, I been listening to native chants. I can feel it in me, lost memories, that remain in my spirit. I can't help it, but to feel lost and at the same time I know I'm not alone.
It’s so important that the kids keep their Heritage alive, so many atrocities have happened to the natives. They re such a beautiful kind wholesome peoples.
I knew instantly that was The Canyon De Chelly, one of the most beautiful places on earth! Love Lukachukai, my husband and I attended my Navaho girlfriends wedding in a hogan, in Lukachukai in 1996, some of my favorite memories are hiking with my children and mom to bottom of canyon, it is so beautiful, rain came down and the rocks shimmered colors that mesmerized my young son’s. I sincerely hope that lovely princess’s dreams of her grandchildren come true, her voice and singing are incredible, I could listen to her forever!
Finally I found a video about Navajos. I’m full blooded Navajo. They talk about the other tribes a lot but I love those videos too since it helps educate me more about other tribes out there not just Navajos. I’m so glad they spoke the native language. I speak it half fluently and understand it half too. Unlike my brother and sister who didn’t get a chance to learn from our grandma like I did since I was very set on learning everything I could when I was younger. Now I’m sort of the translator for them on things I understand, like stories others tell. my grandma said that it’s good that I al least know how to introduce myslef in Navajo and that I know my clans and that I can talk in Navajo with confidence and not be embarrassed about it. Like all the other kids.
Beautiful people and beautiful culture, it sad when some try to claim it as their culture and dismiss the actual Native People. There are a lot of misinformed people like that, that should be proud of their own culture and not try to steal yours.
This gives me hope for the future generations to learn from humanities past mistakes in ridiculing different cultures. Hopefully future generations will be more accepting to others and not want to repeat or pasts mistakes.
Nga mihi Kia koutou Whanau. Heart felt journey and I'm humbly grateful and honored to watch this deep meaningful journey. Sincere gratitude and blessings to you all
What an amazing opportunity it is to be connected to your family in this way. Many of you who have kept good family lines are blessed. Some of us came from extremely poor backgrounds and have lost our ancestral roots. But it is important to remember your values don't just belong to your parents/grandparents. They belong to you.
Beautiful. her singing is mesmerizing and I am really glad that the father is ensuring their tradition remains alive. much respect for the original Americans.

That is shunned in the US. Assimilate or get hate. Even if you were born in the US and assimilate, but you lack one of the American assent, oh yeah...
Except for the black kids. We should mock them by saying things like "we waz kangz" and teach them the only history they have is slavery... right?

Our history is stained with such negativity, I'm glad these girls get the chance to keep their culture alive. I believe in celebrating different cultures and getting the chance to be different because that's what is beautiful.
I was there at Canyon de Chilly last week on May 13 and May 14. Love the Navajo people. Stayed over nite at Navajo town Chinle. Learned so much about the history and culture. Kind people. Inspiring. Beautiful country. If you are touring, take the four hour Jeep drive . They also sell beautiful Navajo jewelry at the valley.
I love that so much hopefully the next time you come I will meet you
MAKE AMERICA INDIGENOUS AGAIN
Yeah good luck America will become Han Chinese before it becomes native again
AMEN
@Beden Huncho whos land???? Who are you????.
@@NoName-ze4qn Im native and you can leave mvskoke creek and seminole
vickie g Kinda hard to do that though. Since there is a very low Native American population (you’re most likely able to find someone with some percentage of Native American than a pure Native American)
Such a beautiful clear sweet voice !
Becky Benson-Bailey thank you🙏
Beautiful and heart warming.
Thank you for this.
Thank you for this video. It’s vital that these cultures do not die out and the young people know the richness of their heritage. Many blessings from UK 🇬🇧
Traditions and history are important in all cultures. Lovely insight.
Beautifully said
Wow. I'm so grateful you said that and have that mind set. 🙏🙏🙏
Facts!!!
You keep them here by being alive....that hit hard
Yes
GOD BLESS THEM AND THEIR FATHER ESPECIALLY FOR TEACHING HIS CHILDREN AND RAISING THEM IN THE CANYON!!!! THEY'RE VERY BLESSED!!!
The opening scenes where the girls are singing and it is echoing through the canyon are hauntingly beautiful.
Seeing the kids is a real joy. That little girl can really sing great.
This girl's braces shine like jewels in her smile. 💖
I’m full blood native I’m not Navajo, I’m Lakota.
Ben Montclair love now nood with the Donminic benlove

Hi :) Maybe you can help me, I'm planning to visit US next year, and I would like to visit reservation or other place significant to you native americans. I'm fascinated by your culture, how close you are with nature, values, philosphy. I would love to feel that indigenous spirit, at least once in my life. So if you have any idead where I could go to learn more please let me know. Love from Poland :)
Indians are very cool but 100 year ago they used to kill cowboys and eat them
Nice
Their voices are incredible.
that little girl has a great voice and is really educated in her culture, good for her! this short film is really beautiful
I have so many feelings about Native American culture I can’t express them. I hope and pray they never forget who they are or their heritage
I am a Navajo and I learned a lot from my grandma also. I was in the pageant but lost I am still great full to have learned my clan and language at a very early age.
great mini doc, really felt something wow
Great mini documentary. 👍
Beautiful story had me crying this is such a amazing part of history and present day, I hope these traditions are never lost!
what a lovely family, their ancestors are proud of them. and I wish them much luck and happiness
A pageant based on spiritual beauty. Very nice vid.
My respect from Michoacan Mexico.
The moment she said Abandoned Indian I felt a heaviness in my heart. My grandmother may not have shared the Din’e ways but I feel the ancestors.
Our paths will join again 🤗
Thank you for this video and sharing these amazing little lights that will continue on the Ancestors ways.
"And then those feelings stay in the canyon." ...So beautiful and true.
The girls singing is so fascinating, especially at the end..

@@Nicole-ju3zb Thank you "n". Just showed us the perfect example of a clown reply.

I am Navajo. Thank you for sharing on youTube.
Honestly I dream that one of these girls will become Miss Universe one day. THAT would be so amazing!
They are already miss universe !!!
True
Alaska Native just won Miss Universe 2021........but I agree these girls are already miss Universe s
They are beautiful inside and out
My eldest son married a half Navajo woman.
Please....😡
this movie touched me very much. I often had tears in my eyes. I hope this family knows how strong they are and that they will never give up on being how they are like. They know whats worthfull for them and they involve it in their day every day. What a difference to a lot other people from Europe or else.
Ahéhee' for this video, what a wonderful Dad these lovely girls have! Great Story

Beautiful place, beautiful people, beautiful little movie.
Beautiful singing. I'm latino but still proud of natives who take their time out to learn their language & keep their culture alive. Love & respect for ✊
Reminds me so much of the joiking sung by my people, the Sámi people of Northern Fennoscandia. Such a beautiful video and a great insight into the lives of our American cousins
the real americans.
paramore57 what the animals that were there before they migrated there and started killing them too
lol, as if anyone would take "Codeine & Sprite" seriously...

1- We are all from some one else, and some where else,
Fugitives from the negative energy that feeds on and sucks dry your
soul.
This is true of all tribes across the globe.
2- The Navajo, Šináglegleǧa (In my Language) have their very own
culture and it douse not resemble the Siberian mongoloids or
Australian Aborigines. Culture defines who a people are, not
genetics.
(Genetics at best describe from whom a people come. The Celts,
the Scandinavians, the Britons, and the Russians, are not the same
people because their cultures are different, not their genetics. )
3- Šináglegleǧa have been there in the Southwest by some Scientist
limited understanding 12,000. Much longer by other accounts.
In this globe of Fugitives, and Migrants, any people who have been
in one spot practicing their unique culture for (OMG) 10,000 years
before Christ even walked the earth, get to be considered NATIVE
to that place.
Šináglegleǧa are a Noble and beautiful tribe of people.
Native to Turtle Island, (what you call North America),
and no drug addled negative mind, or
capitalistic agenda driven plan, or dark stupidity,
can take away or change the shining truth of it.
May they survive the apocalypse that has befallen them, with their spirit strong and their culture intact.
Nice short Video National Geographic, I'm happily Surprised at it.

lol, hmm. No African or Australian or Asian DNA in my Algonquian ancestry... Looks like you 'firstists' are gonna have to scour the internet for more articles someone else wrote...
ahó XIPHIASCDXX wówičakȟe (+XIPHIASCDXX yours is truth) and we will still be here when Empires Evil is so long past that it will become mythic story's most will not believe could have actually happened.
As being Native American. This is great to see!
Yeah right....🤭

Respect sister!
Ikr this is our culture and we need to keep it alive
This film is full of beauty and magic from the land and the people living there. What a wonderful glimpse it gives into both.
Such a beautiful voice she has.
I can't help it, but to feel lost and at the same time I know I'm not alone.
wow that's beautiful
It’s so important that the kids keep their Heritage alive, so many atrocities have happened to the natives. They re such a beautiful kind wholesome peoples.
It's amazing to know other interpretation of the reality
A Powerful and Beautiful Culture that was treated very cruely they attempted to distroy A Power that cant be destroyed !!!! All the Best
So much respect for this people. Wow so beautyful place. Peaceful place and peaceful people. My all respect.
