"DJCX: How We Got FREER" tells the origin story of FREER Records, which birthed in 2013 as an album project called Die Jim Crow. The goal was to make an epic double album with formerly and currently incarcerated Black musicians about racism in the U.S. prison system in the era of mass incarceration.
What followed was a wild journey for the album's producer Fury Young, an outsider to incarceration but a (mostly) street smart city kid with a driving passion for giving a voice to incarcerated musicians. Though the full length Die Jim Crow LP was never completed, something much greater came to be: the first record label in America for prison-impacted musicians.
Fury Young is joined by FREER Records' artist and Co-Executive Director BL Shirelle as well as DJC-era Co-Producer/Engineer dr. Israel to guide us through the ups and downs of DJC's first decade leading up to the FREER Records era. Along the way we hear from formerly and currently incarcerated artists from across the country who we've had the honor of recording. "DJCX: How We Got FREER" tells an unforgettable, remarkable story about social justice, creativity, and different walks of life coming together against all odds.
