I worked for a painting subcontractor for over 5+ years making roughly $40,000 a year. I set aside $1500 and eventually bought a decent airless sprayer. Last August, two weeks after buying the sprayer, I quit my job and booked my first exterior project. I completed that job all by myself and it took me five solid ten hour days. The sprayer paid for itself that first job and I still pocketed $400. Fast forward to today, I've made roughly $70,000 in the past 8 months. Of that I've probably only worked a total of 6 months this year. I have been able to pay my car off, buy a work van, a small enclosed trailer, ladders, lights, pressure washer, ect.. And I haven't had to hire a single employee but that's going to change next year. So far the hardest part is keeping track of where your money is going, organizing receipts, and making sure your taxes are in order but I'm getting the hang of it. If I can do it anyone can do it.
Well done my man. In my experience the older you get the less energy you have so it is good to work hard while you can. Then learn to work smart. Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Jeff that's true but can you put out a video on how to soundproof the ducts? My office is right next to my toddler's playroom and I get all of kinds of noise coming through. its weird everything that happened when people started w.f.h in mass. storage units across the country, are fairly much booked. storage units? i'm guessing, people started moving further from work.
I've been working as a handyman for myself the last two years and everything you said is true! I stay consistently booked with work making $50/hr, make my own schedule, work when I want.
@@steephunger5249 i began picking up the trades by working under a few different carpenter/contractors for a year, then a couple more years building things for myself, and since working for myself I use RUclips vids for work I'm not familiar with yet.
Funny thing is I found your channel while working for an app in the Ottawa area, ended up starting my own business called Smarter Ottawa. I specialize in home automation and tv mounting. You've been a great teacher and coach, Thank you.
I just recently did some renovations in my house and going to the inlaws this weekend to do some flooring. I assumed the market was full of skilled tradesman but I just may check into the demand for my area. Thanks Jeff!
I know right? Whenever I need something done the first thing i think is"how am I going to do that?" not " who am I going to call?" I'm just starting to realize that a significant number of people don't think like that.
I'm a few years from retirement and still learning from RUclips how to do a lot. But I definitely hire out or find young neighbors to do things that require getting on a roof. I needed a hole cut into the 2nd story wall to install a Y for a vent for 2 bathroom ventilation fans. I saw my 30 year old neighbor with his ladder doing something on his roof. I texted him asking if I could borrow him and his ladder. He came immediately and was happy to use the hole saw. I gave his family homemade granola for his great work. But I love your idea a lot. In the US there are neighborhood online groups where people regularly ask for a handyman for this kind of work.
yep forget those ladders. 60 yrs old..was building an awning on back of my house. was on a 4 ft ladder, leg on ladre broke. i hit the ground like a rock. that was 3 yrs ago and i still have pain from that. Tore my rotator cuff. ladders a bad for me. plus i have dizzy spells.
I love how he is just casually doing the work we could be doing as he is explaining it.. just showing off how easy it can be haha 😂 Awesome video sir! I am a stay at home dad right now, but I have gained some basic skills such as drywall and painting… light fixture installation. Maybe I should look into this? Hmm 🤔
1 day a week can net $1000.00 if done correctly and help you write off some of your current expenses. Would you like to see a few more vids explaining the idea?
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY would love that sir! I have watched a lot of your videos. You’re the first channel I look into when i have a project in mind to see if you’ve made a video on what I need.
It is a balance of marketing and pay. The bigger you reach the more you can charge. I would say beginners should charge at least $75 / hr to cover costs and make it worth your while.
This video is the story of my life I discovered 2 years ago I had a passion for building, now I'm working as a maintenance manager (basically fixing stuff) for a modest salary, but the condition is that I can work In people house on the side. I make maybe 2000$ a month by installing screens on walls, vanity, fixing drywall and painting, not mentioning furniture assembly! 2 years ago I barely knew how to use a drill... This channel taught me a lot!!!! Thank you Jeff!
I replaced my entire laundry, taking out an old broom closet and reclaiming space, did all the tiling, drywalling, and hung Ikea cabinets...even bought that firecore laser...learned a lot from your channel. Took me a while but it's done
I've been following this channel for a little while and I did it to help me with my current line of work: building maintenance. I'm a plain jane tech 2, and the tips I've taken away from this have both garnered me notoriety and praise, especially when painting. Word got around and I've since picked up side work from the office side coworkers and it's paid well. It is because of skills I help hone from channels like this I was able to get enough confidence and ability to even consider side gigs and my most recent one was initially very intimidating because their mantle was very ornate and I didn't even tape off (would have been impossible anyway) but the brush technique I've learned from here paid off in spades and I never even touched it! I was happy, they were happy, and I'm their first call for home jobs now. In this day and age there is no reason not to be using the internet and especially platforms like this to help hone your skills or even pick up fundamentals for new ones, and for FREE! My appreciation is huge for these guys. Heartfelt, thank you and I hope you all know you're creating a legacy of workers who learn from you.
Thank you sir, being from Mexico I can tell you no matter what country you are in or what type of economy you do have, handyman is highly in demand specially with newer generations being told all you need is work from home, Young people learn from this wise and kind gentlemen and go crush it, the world needs you!
This video came just in time. Im a tile setter apprentice. Learning how to do floors, tub surrounds, backsplashes etc... been learning and taking everything in, and I also come to your videos for guidance as well. Ive Been at it for a little over a year and have been wondering if it's going to pay off on the end. Alot of people say there's money in it but people don't want to work, and I'm starting to see that. I have a retail job that I do in the weekend because 1. Little extra cash is always nice 2. Its easy AF compared to being a helper and 3. Working with the beautiful ladies is always a bonus. I was thinking of going back retail full time because of the benefits but this video has opened up my eyes a little bit. I'm no stranger to work on the weekends so once I learn my stuff it'll be off to the races. A couple of weekends a month to produce good quality work that people won't mind paying for.
Its funny how fitting this is for my situation. To be honest your dry wall videos have made me at least 4 grand. Thanks for this resource its needed now more then ever. Cheers
This man spits truth. I am not a handy man at all, but I have a guy who I trust who is and now he helps out 7 other people I referred him to and that chain continues.
Thanks Jeff! I used to do side work with my pops when I was younger to help him out. You just encouraged me to go out there, help people in need, and make some needed money while I'm at it 💪
Thank you sir! We had a handyman come out and quoted us $200 per hour! My price as a handyman is 75 to 100 depending on the job. People will pay crazy money, don't be afraid to ask.
Your videos are great, Jeff. I've learned so many things from tiling a kitchen backsplash, a full shower and bathroom floor to toilet installation, drywall repair, building basic wood shelves. I recently bought a new home and wanted to update the flooring. I received a quote for $7,000 just for installation of the LVP. I studied your flooring vids a few times until I felt confident and did it all myself with great results in the entire 2000ft2 house. I enjoy this type of work and was just thinking I should do this on the side for some extra cash. Talk about timing on the topic of this video!
Thank you so much for this video! Please produce more content like this. I appreciate your channel so much. I've learned so much. It has made my career as a residential maintenance technician.
Jeff is a masterpiece. I have been watching his videos for long. Every time I see him, I feel scared, what if I meet him in home depot or Lowes as I also live in Ottawa. What If he asks me did I subscribe his channel. That feeling makes me admire him like a highly proficient professor in the university from which every student is afraid yet respect deep from the heart.
In finishing my basement, I found that I really love framing. It's so satisfying. Hanging drywall was a lot of fun too, but I think I'm far too slow to do that professionally right now. I can't wait to share my finished results with you once it's all done.
Every single time when start watching your video, I give a like before hand. Because every video you make they are very meaningful. So no doubt just give a like. Thanks again sharing your time and talent with us. Great person. 👍🙏
I was offered early retirement as we were getting ready to sell our house. So we cancelled all the contractors and did it ourselves. I 'made' more money that way than I would of by working. The house showed amazing and sold in 5 days.
I quit my adjunct teaching job (of 11 years) to focus on my "side hustle" of doing handyman work. (HandyDan!) I've made more money this summer than I did all of the last semester I taught, and I haven't pushed myself to find customers - they tend to find me. A lot of what I "know" came from your channel, so thank you! Cheers!
Spot on Jeff, I've been doing handyman work for years and I'm afraid to advertise because I can't even keep up right now with just word of mouth lol. There's endless work out there for people that have the skills and ambition to get out of bed and get stuff done without being told.
My husband and I are going to start a senior helping business, I have experience in client service and estates/poa and he has intermediate renovation skills so it will tie in perfectly
I think a side hustle might be a good idea. We bought our 1970s house from a nice old man, but he was just getting too old to keep up with maintenance and was moving out of state. Most of the houses in the neighborhood were probably built in the 70s, and there are quite a few older folks around, so I'm sure there's no shortage of projects. I'm very detail-oriented. I've watched this channel and many other channels, RUclips has been invaluable, and working on my own house has given me tons of skills from painting, drywall repair, replacing doors, trim, tile, bathroom fixtures you name it. It never ends, but it's satisfying, and increases your home's value.
Your advice is very accurate. My father did moonlighting as far back as I can remember. I was his helper and apprentice for years. It not only helped me make money as a teenager and encouraged me to choose a trade skill as a career, the extra money he made basically let him retire at 62 as a millionaire. I really like watching your channel.
I just find it amazing, the number of people that exist that simply won't do simple projects for themselves. Such as fixing a hole in drywall. It really is the easiest of easy jobs you can do.
I’ve been on the fence debating doing this for a while now as I have a little bit of skills in many areas and this video was exactly what I needed to be that catalyst.
I did your shed from your diy shed build. I was thinking about going into New homes neighborhoods selling it. It was super easy with a second person who also knows how to do it.
I can't work anymore but i can teach to do projects on their own home or someone that wants to learn how. I worked in construction for 34 years until i messed up my lower back and live in extreme pain every day
@@beautifullyours I'll have to learn how to zoom but that's a good idea. I have so much in my head. I done commercial drywall for 18 years then 12 years as a construction manager and 5 ears of running my own business doing maintenance on kidney dialysis all over Oklahoma and northern Texas. I live in central Oklahoma
We moved into Barrhaven 10 years ago and with your videos I've done a ton of remodels and renos on my own house. I love that your local which is huge. I've now started doing handyman work on the side. (In the ottawa area) for a year and I'm not making enough a year to have to report it on my taxes. Who knows though... maybe I can go full-time eventually. Cheers Jeff
That is awesome! A sweet spot for your business is keeping your annual sales under $30,000 so you don't have to start collecting taxes for the gov't! Be careful though....all income is supposed to be reported.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I checked with the ontario website. You only have to report your extra income if it exceeds 12.5k a year. Unless that income is from income properties. But just a side hustle you don't need to report it.
Jeff this is an amazing video that is beyond "giving back". You're a wonderful human and you have no idea how many lives you may change with the wisdom you share. May God continue to bless you and your family
Thanks Jeff, I was able to finish our legal basement suite DIY mostly by following your basement videos, other than the mechanical trades. Much appreciated
One important note that should be mentioned here: if you’re going to take Jeff’s advice and go out to he a handyman, please please please PLEASE know what you’re doing. While Jeff’s videos offer expert advice, implementing them with “false confidence” can lead to disastrous results. Don’t think you’re a general contractor because you’ve watched a couple of videos on RUclips then go and do a hack job on someone’s bathroom that they’ll need to undo and redo in three months. This type of work takes a lot of attention to detail and lots of know-how. If you can, get some hands-on practice on your own home first before going out and potentially ruining someone else’s.
not suggesting folks do bathrooms right out of the gate. just some basic skills and tools to fill the gap in the labor market without taking on too much risk.
Thanks so much Jeff for all the GREAT ADVICE and for sharing your knowledge. I've done side jobs little by little and I have come to realize that I'm gaining more confidence due to the nice feedback from clients. You're an awesome person Jeff ..THANK YOU 💯💯🙏🙏
Here in the USA the government shoves "go to college" down everyone's throat.. So we know where the blame is for the lack of tradespeople. I agree with you 100% and just wish that our government would stop this reckless course. Skilled labor makes more over the course of their lifespan then most college degrees as there is NO loans to repay and you are in the marketplace at least 4 years earlier then them. Most goto college for the extra "status" they think they get or the partying.. Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs keeps saying this and yet they still just turn the other cheek! Good luck with that when it is time to face reality.
Thank Jeff I appreciate all your good advice I am looking to start a handyman business going into retirement from my current 34 year job, working on things brings me joy and you have help with some of my confidence issues also taking your advice on helping friends and neighbors to get better at my skills, and of course watch you videos for some tips lol.
Had to gut the shoddily built garage suite in our 1960s house (think inches of newspaper under inches of caulking around an exterior door instead of putting in wood shims, or mudded over newspaper instead of drywall patches) to run my office out of it This channel has helped me with installing door jambs that I had to make myself, framing out half walls, installing flooring, tiling our shower after doing the drywall and plumbing for it, insulation and vapour barrier and honestly so much more. I now have two more friends with old houses whose bathrooms are suddenly in a state of demo after leaks, there's no labour available, and so I'm looking at two more bathrooms to do. This isn't my side gig (yet?) but wow it should be.
Just a little fyi for those in Quebec , you need certification for pretty much everything, business license and min 20000 insurance , be careful cause the fines are hefty , I learned the hard way

its weird everything that happened when people started w.f.h in mass. storage units across the country, are fairly much booked. storage units? i'm guessing, people started moving further from work.
It's amazing to see how far this channel has blown up over the last 6 years
LOL. We are Just getting Started, Cheers!
I've been working as a handyman for myself the last two years and everything you said is true! I stay consistently booked with work making $50/hr, make my own schedule, work when I want.
Good stuff! Cheers Chris!
Any books you'd recommend?
@@steephunger5249 i began picking up the trades by working under a few different carpenter/contractors for a year, then a couple more years building things for myself, and since working for myself I use RUclips vids for work I'm not familiar with yet.
Funny thing is I found your channel while working for an app in the Ottawa area, ended up starting my own business called Smarter Ottawa. I specialize in home automation and tv mounting. You've been a great teacher and coach, Thank you.
That is awesome! Cheers!
I’ve just launched my handyman business in Dundee, Scotland. Channels like this are a huge help! Thanks!
Glad to help
I just recently did some renovations in my house and going to the inlaws this weekend to do some flooring. I assumed the market was full of skilled tradesman but I just may check into the demand for my area. Thanks Jeff!
That is awesome! You will find that most folks can't find a reliable option they can trust. Cheers!
Cheers David. stay off the ladder. time and the ground are not as forgiving as it used to be.
yep forget those ladders. 60 yrs old..was building an awning on back of my house. was on a 4 ft ladder, leg on ladre broke. i hit the ground like a rock. that was 3 yrs ago and i still have pain from that. Tore my rotator cuff. ladders a bad for me. plus i have dizzy spells.
would be nice to have someone available for those types of jobs eh!
I love how he is just casually doing the work we could be doing as he is explaining it.. just showing off how easy it can be haha 😂
Awesome video sir!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes please
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY would love that sir! I have watched a lot of your videos. You’re the first channel I look into when i have a project in mind to see if you’ve made a video on what I need.
Cheers!
It is a balance of marketing and pay. The bigger you reach the more you can charge. I would say beginners should charge at least $75 / hr to cover costs and make it worth your while.
This video is the story of my life
I discovered 2 years ago I had a passion for building, now I'm working as a maintenance manager (basically fixing stuff) for a modest salary, but the condition is that I can work In people house on the side.
I make maybe 2000$ a month by installing screens on walls, vanity, fixing drywall and painting, not mentioning furniture assembly!
2 years ago I barely knew how to use a drill...
This channel taught me a lot!!!!
Thank you Jeff!
Cheers David. happy to help!
Your videos were a big part of what inspired my wife and I to start our business. Cheers man, you ARE the best!
That is awesome!
I replaced my entire laundry, taking out an old broom closet and reclaiming space, did all the tiling, drywalling, and hung Ikea cabinets...even bought that firecore laser...learned a lot from your channel. Took me a while but it's done
That is awesome! Well Done!
Happy to share and hopefully inspire. Cheers my man!
Love this! I make enough money working my current job.. but if things ever go sideways, I know I’ll always have the skills to make money.
the more you work the faster you pay off the house. My goal is to owe no man nothing so sideways is not an issue.
Thank you sir, being from Mexico I can tell you no matter what country you are in or what type of economy you do have, handyman is highly in demand specially with newer generations being told all you need is work from home, Young people learn from this wise and kind gentlemen and go crush it, the world needs you!
Watching you patch that drywall, I’m in awe. That one thing will help me so much. Subscribed! Thank you!
I have a retail job that I do in the weekend because
1. Little extra cash is always nice
2. Its easy AF compared to being a helper and
Cheers Victor. You do what makes you fulfilled. Cheers!
Its funny how fitting this is for my situation. To be honest your dry wall videos have made me at least 4 grand. Thanks for this resource its needed now more then ever. Cheers
Great to hear! Cheers and keep it up!
This man spits truth. I am not a handy man at all, but I have a guy who I trust who is and now he helps out 7 other people I referred him to and that chain continues.
RIP bubble level at the 0:23 mark. I almost jumped up to catch it.
Great stuff. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks Jeff! I used to do side work with my pops when I was younger to help him out. You just encouraged me to go out there, help people in need, and make some needed money while I'm at it 💪
Cheers to that!
Thank you sir! We had a handyman come out and quoted us $200 per hour! My price as a handyman is 75 to 100 depending on the job. People will pay crazy money, don't be afraid to ask.
say that!
You are the best teacher in the world of RUclips regarding home renovations and projects etc.
I wish I personally knew someone like you. GOD bless❤️
You do now Leanne. Cheers!
Please make a series on this!!
Sounds like I have to now!
Cheers Clinton, I am sure there are plenty of folks who could use your assistance.
Thank you so much for this video!
Please produce more content like this.
I appreciate your channel so much. I've learned so much.
It has made my career as a residential maintenance technician.
Thank you! Will do!
Jeff, you're a heck of a teacher. Homage to you. I give you credit when credit is due. Thank you sir.
Don't be shy. I love to talk to folks ! it helps me understand what videos you all need. Cheers!
You’re giving us gems, Jeff. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks, will do!
In finishing my basement, I found that I really love framing. It's so satisfying. Hanging drywall was a lot of fun too, but I think I'm far too slow to do that professionally right now. I can't wait to share my finished results with you once it's all done.
That is awesome!
This is something I didn't think about, helping others solve problems around the house I was forced to resolve in my own home !!
Every single time when start watching your video, I give a like before hand. Because every video you make they are very meaningful. So no doubt just give a like. Thanks again sharing your time and talent with us. Great person. 👍🙏
Cheers for smashing the like button!
Hey stop blowing up my spot! But for real this is what I've been doing for a full time for the last 3 years. It's been great
all the power to ya my man!
I was offered early retirement as we were getting ready to sell our house. So we cancelled all the contractors and did it ourselves. I 'made' more money that way than I would of by working. The house showed amazing and sold in 5 days.
Now That Is What I am Talking About! Cheers!
Cheers!
Way to go Daniel. Cheers!
Thanks for the great advice and encouragement Jeff. I'm doing it myself and you couldn't be more correct.
You're seriously blowing my mind right now. I love it.
Spot on Jeff, I've been doing handyman work for years and I'm afraid to advertise because I can't even keep up right now with just word of mouth lol. There's endless work out there for people that have the skills and ambition to get out of bed and get stuff done without being told.
I just retired and took a maintenance job for a cabin rental company. I make my own hours. First hour is $50.00, thereafter $35.00.
My husband and I are going to start a senior helping business, I have experience in client service and estates/poa and he has intermediate renovation skills so it will tie in perfectly
it all makes sense.... happy birthday Jeff... from across the pond.
Cheers Phil!
Indeed Sir...I live on the Delmarva Peninsula and you just preached a sermon ✊🏾🙏🏾👍🏾‼️ thanks 👍🏾
You just summed up my plan for the next 5 years. Thanks for the shot of confidence, I gotta go out and tap into this!!
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers!
This is the most practical advice ive seen on the internet about fasible business that you can start. Thank you.
I’m a teacher with a small handyman business on the side
Nice!
Outstanding
I never write reviews on videos but you're awesome man. Keep it up
Cheers Ruben!
I did your shed from your diy shed build. I was thinking about going into New homes neighborhoods selling it. It was super easy with a second person who also knows how to do it.
great idea. everyone needs storage!
I can't work anymore but i can teach to do projects on their own home or someone that wants to learn how. I worked in construction for 34 years until i messed up my lower back and live in extreme pain every day
Can someone pay you for classes via zoom?
Loving it!!!!!!!! However taxes are a federal issue so best to check with them as well.
You the man , This channel is the best! already saved me over 10k and counting
Great to hear! Cheers Robert!
The hardest part for me is figuring out how to get my name out there, how to get customers. Thank you for the awesome videos!
Happy Birthday Jeff, Enjoy yourself and thanks for all the advice.
Thanks, will do!
Dude you’re such an inspiration. Thanks for all you do and teaching us these skills to help ourselves and other people.
I'm with you.
I am/was a GC and 1 of the factors of getting out of the field was the shortage of help, then there is the age factor 🥺!
and the I think I have enough to retire so why bother factor!
This should “go viral”!
That all depends on how many folks are out there who can get behind a message of working your way into financial freedom.
You are one of the best mate. Please keep us posted around painting. Many thanks
Just a little fyi for those in Quebec , you need certification for pretty much everything, business license and min 20000 insurance , be careful cause the fines are hefty , I learned the hard way
Bro you the goat of diy podcast thx you for helping me build my life please keep going
Great video, sending this vid to my kids who are just graduating
I am starting to do this as we speak. I work part time with a small one man show Contractor buddy of mine , and am looking for small Handyman jobs on my days off. Hopefully I can go out on my own very soon.
Right on Mike!
I was recommended this channel glad I was great video
Glad you enjoyed! Cheers!
Dude! You are the man! I work in aerospace building ejection seats for the military and I doordash after work to get out of debt, but all I can afford in CA is to live in a shed in a back yard. However! I’ve converted it into a tiny home with some of your videos to help. You’ve changed the game man. Now I’m thinking it’s time to quit that side hustle and start this business. Hella motivated by your video, as always. Thanks man.
Happy birthday! It's mine as well, I knew I liked you for a reason
