    any idea what contrast would replace the sepia shade paint? I have nazdreg yellow, this might work.
    I'm trying to find a comparison to see which contrast is closest to sepia, but can't find anything.
    EDIT: seems Trovarion used skeleton horde, so this is probably the way to go. I like how the sepia looks though, so will have to do some testers.

    • @jwminiatures

      I think Skeleton Horde is going to give you a lighter finish, I think something like Snakebite Leather might give you deeper and warmer shadows

    Just out of curiosity when painting a tyranid model with a fleshy skin tone that has slight pink hues at the joints what would be a good carapace color? I know the question might seem a little specific but I’m going for a grim dark style of tyranid and thought you might have a good suggestion on the colors, thanks.

    • @jwminiatures
      @jwminiatures  Год назад

      It sounds kind of close the the Leviathan scheme but generally warmer colours always contrast well with a cooler counterpart. Cold purples, blues and tones like that, if you going with higher values in the skin then you can use lower values across the carapace focusing your highlights towards to edge for more contrast. if you have pictures feel free to share them and I might be able to offer more suggestions. Hope that helps

    Hey man, awesome guide! I've been looking for a way to get my Kraken scheme carapaces looking more interesting and less dull and your glaze with the incubi worked like a treat! One question that came to mind re-watching your vid, judging from the pot you show I assume that's the old formulation of Seraphim Sepia rather than the newer altered mix. I'm not sure if the new stuff would work exactly as well as I think from what I've seen it appears to not dry as dark, but then again that's not applying two coats, what are your thoughts? Also on the topic of washes, do you use them neat or do you thin them with a little medium/water?

    • @jwminiatures
      @jwminiatures  Год назад +1

      Thank you mate. Thats a good eye, it is one of the older pots but I believe the new ones are meant to be better at recess shading and not as good at tinting. This shouldn't have too much of an impact, if it happens to not be as dark just apply another layer and it should be fine. When I painted this one it was effectively straight out of the pot, there may have been more moisture or water on my brush but nothing significant. In some of the other schemes I have thinned them down, it just depends on how much colour I am after. I generally thin everything with water because its easier and always on hand.

    • @Skringly
      @Skringly Год назад

      @@jwminiatures Yeah that's a good shout, I'll have to pick some up and compare but it'll probably not being notable by the end of paint job. The less staining might even make the following layers go a bit easier, I'm already considering dry brushing the Tallarn Sand layer just to speed up the process across the literal swarm of gaunts I've got on the hobby desk haha.

    @D00M3R_MAVS Год назад

    I don't think the carapace glazing works on the older minis, as they don't have the detailed plastic, it's all flat. I've tried a few ways and it just doesn't seem to work. I might just have to skip this on the older ones. I was trying it with watered down black contrast though (and then soft body black from secret weapon) maybe actually cutting my own glaze will have better results.
    I can't try much more though as I can't keep painting back over it, or it's going to end up a mess.
    EDIT: on my tester Zoanthrope I just ended up doing some old school panel lining style shading on the carapace, as there is nothing for the pigments to grab onto (like on these new nids) it looks cool. I have no really mastered glazing yet though, like the consistency really. Maybe the vallejo black I was using wasn't very good for glazing though, as I just kept getting tide marks like with citadel shade paints.

    • @jwminiatures
      @jwminiatures  Год назад +1

      It could be a consistency thing or down to the amount of paint and water in your brush. When you are glazing it should be tinting the colour by applying a thin filter layer over the top not necessarily like washing so having the texture shouldn't effect it too much. If you check out ruclips.net/video/Pga58A9c-aI/видео.html it might give you some pointers or if you want to send me some pictures or videos of your process I can try to provide some feedback

      @@jwminiatures yeah, for me it was a case that I'd put paint down, but I couldn't move it. the pigment would stain when I tried to move the paint any further.
      I don't know if this is because it was black on red or the kind of red or black. I just gave up on it though and did something else.
      I tried it with a glaze I made, contrast paint and soft body black wash from secret weapon and I got the same result in all attempts.
      The pigment was staining the initially area and when I tried to move it it was leaving rings.
      I assume the paint is just drying way too quickly.
      I ended up having to strip the piece I was practicing on because I couldn't keep covering it up. I ended up with way too thick red on the carapace, so stripped it.
      I have spare Zoanthrope heads though, so just built another one while the paint loosens off the other.
