Thanks for this video. My husband has been a managing engineer for solid waste for close to 20 years. Frankly, there's no such thing as zero waste, but the lower waste options you have presented are so much better than most of what's out there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of materials that just can't be recycled because the facilities don't exist, so I'm not sure how companies can say they "make sure it gets recycled". Glass recycling is also much more complicated than most people realize - types of glass can't be mixed. There is also almost no market for recycled glass. As you say, vote with your dollars. We need to put the onus back on companies to make more sustainable packaging as that will make the biggest difference. Also, I try to buy less stuff in general. I will happily buy one Aether eyeshadow palette, rather than 10 cheaper palettes packaged in plastic. As for more sustainable products - I love the Unwrapped Life shampoo bars, and Fat and the Moon makes a beautiful highlighter in a recyclable tin. Metals are some of the most highly recycled materials, so I have been using Kjaer Weis for years and will be investing in some of Kiki's products.
I have a good pair of leather boots that I bought for $150 when I was younger (felt like a fortune). 30 years later and the boots are still in the game. Quality lasts.
@@Balletified That's terrible. I'm vegan and I am completely for people reusing leather and wool because you're not making a demand for it. You are wearing another animal's skin but you are using the "life" it still has and not contributing to waste nor cruelty.
Honestly, I've been looking for smt like this for a year. Also agree on your reasoning and opinions. When I finish the make up I already own I want to invest in zero waste or zero waste-philosophy products even though they're more expensive than most things (drugstore), because earth matters more.

Honestly I don’t remember the last time I watched a makeup video and was nodding my head like *yaaassss* pretty much the whole time. I’ve been looking into zero/low waste for months now and am slowly transitioning (shampoo bars are the best!!). I 100% agree with you on all of this!!!! I think bare minerals is also doing a recycle program for all make up - I believe you have to take it to one of their stores. Also, if you want to donate products that aren’t expired and are able to be sanitized, there’s a group called Project Beauty Share that takes certain beauty items for women in need. They have a list on their website of what they will take, you just have to ship it to them.
Love that you emphasis that perfection isn’t practical! Small continuous changes are the most sustainable long term. One of my personal favs is 100 percent pure (Especially blush and mascara) though their line isn’t all hits. They take back their own used products. I also love fat & the moon, elate and Stark skincare is an absolute favorite!! Looking forward to seeing where this journey takes you & all of us!
i remember asking my mom at five years old about what happens to her makeup packaging after she’s done using the product inside, and she was like, “uhhh...hm.”, and couldn’t find/think of an answer (this was the early 90s, so, no google 😂). i’m so glad that companies like Elate like this exist, and love that you’re bringing up this topic for discussion in such a healthy and open way. it’s not about fear mongering/judgement, it’s about the process, and how we can learn together on taking better care of our planet and our own well-being! thanks kackie🧡
Love this, Kackie! I totally support your channel regardless of which direction you go or what you focus on, but would love to see some shop my stash and "ethical, consciously shopped" product reviews! Keep being awesome ❤
This entire video basically encapsulates my feelings I have had for the last year/year and a half on so many things, but particularly In the area of beauty/body care. Can’t wait to see how the Terre cycle box goes, I have been considering getting one myself.
So, I watched yesterday and have thought a lot about this video. I love in ways I can't explain that you got yourself a teracycle box. I understand that perhaps no recycling method is perfect, but this just felt like standing up and putting your money where your mouth is, and I am here for it girl! Much love from your new biggest fan and a fellow Texan. 💕💕
Love learning about ways to be more sustainable!! In beauty and lifestyle! One of the biggest changes I've made is reusable menstrual products. It's astonishing how much less waste I am creating!
Love the idea of not only clean but sustainability! There is a brand I recently stumbled upon that is called sweet Leilani from Canada. ( don’t worry they sell through amazon too which by way amazon also ships in sustainable packing - it’s an option in your settings! ) .. another brand to look into if you’re interested they have a great mission.
I LOVE this direction you're going with sustainability and green products and being awake and aware as a consumer. Thank you thank you thank you. And by the way Credo Beauty has a few stores around the country and you can take in any empty beauty containers and they'll recycle them.
Thank you for this conversation, Kackie! I’ve been trying to become more knowledgeable about how to recycle properly and what materials are best for recycling. Love that you’re talking about this since this is mainly how I pick makeup + skincare and I love your reviews 😄😊
I can only find reviews of people knocking it! But one product that works for mascara, liner, and brows and lasts two years for only $20-$25 seems awesome.
@@alexistao5746 I saw it. To me, it wasn't the kind of review I was looking for. Glad you got what you wanted out of it. Turns out Besame just uploaded a bunch of mini videos addressing FAQ and that was helpful.
The difficult thing is that reducing waste means using up what you have. And trying to find a product that works for your skin takes some trial and error ! I consider my skin care/ beauty routine pretty minimal but sometimes a product doesn't work out and I want to order more!
I love what you've said about conscious beauty versus shopping for beauty conscious-ly. I've found a stunningly ethical jewelry brand I have no qualms about supporting, and now that's where I buy jewelry exclusively. But I haven't found that with clothes yet. And so my focus is to buy staple pieces from my favorite store (which is crushingly a fast fashion retailer) because I know they fit great and will look good and be comfortable. They work in my casual and work wardrobe and thus my entire wardrobe is the size of a capsule wardrobe. My 1 pair of jeans is from them, it's not ethically made, but, it's important for me to feel like there's still some good I can do: which is to seek out that great pair of jeans and just have the one pair.
Literally every product you used i went "ooo! Add that to my wishlist! Add that too and that and that!" And that elate foundation is making my heart beat a little faster 😍😍 I'm suprised that lilah b has a recycling program considering they dont have replaceables. Pretty dope. One day i hope to have a makeup collection that i'm proud of and is sustainable.
Yayyy! Definitely looking forward to more sustainable product reviews from Kackie! 🤗💕 As for low waste products recommendations: for anyone looking for a tinted spf in place of foundation I really like Mychelle’s Sun Shield Liquid SPF 50. Also Fat and The Moon’s Beam highlighter is soo pretty and I second the comment about Besame’s cake mascara but recommend you recycle a mascara brush already owned as opposed to using the one included.
Just discovered your cannel and loving it! But FYI, the elate mascara tube is made of plastic wrapped in bamboo. I’ve heard great things about the besame mascara and will be my next buy:)!
Great video for the beginning of the year to think more consciously about products we are consuming. Sometimes local community centers have terracycle boxes for all types of products instead of having to buy your own. Terracycle's loop company also looks awesome! I hope they expand the products carried and the states they supply to.
One sustainably conscious brand I really love is Tulura. They're a skincare line and you can mail back your empty bottles for a credit and if the bottle is in good condition, they actually sanitize it and reuse it. If it isn't in good condition, they handle the recycling themselves.

I use the terracycle free beauty product recycling program! I keep a small box in my closet and toss in stuff as I go. Of course I'm trying to reduce the plastic i buy in the first place.
I think we need to really think about how much we're buying first and foremost. Especially in a green beauty space where the shelf life is less and we can never fully finish a product before they expire. I thought about that with the Pacifica blush you showed. While not a strong value for the dollar for the small size, who uses up a blush within the expiry? In terms of wastage, smaller products would be better. But, we're consumers. No matter how thoughtful. We want to be better. We want to be more intentioned with our consumption. I do worry though that when we buy green beauty, we soothe ourselves into thinking we're making responsible choices, and we stop ourselves from taking the time to really think about our impact on the planet. We tend to get into a sort of conspicuous consumption cycle that ultimately is just promoting a new (albeit better in many ways) market. I wish consumption could slow overall.
Honestly what helps me is watching other people enjoy these products and test them for me, for some reason it helps me buy less? I can't explain it. And I use what I have and enjoy it more after being inspired by minimalist makeup collections.

I have my eyes on the Alima pure concealer because it comes in refill pans. Also want the Besame mascara/liner cake refill. I'm more interested in the shadows, highlights, and bronzers pans from Makeup Geek over Colourpop because CP strategically models their business after fast fashion. Also, if someone wants an item from an unsustainable, but quality brand, buy secondhand and support your local cobbler to fix it up as needed!

What you say about sutainability all sounds very reasonable, although i think you should do some resarch on microplastic since your actively support brands that are using this ingredient.
This was lovely. Also, ILIA utilizes TerraCycle for the recycling of its products AND any other brand's! Per their website: "we invite our U.S. customers to mail in up to 5 empty beauty products per month-ours or another brand’s, we don’t discriminate-and TerraCycle will break it down responsibly, so it doesn’t end up in a landfill". You just have to fill out a form with your address and email and they will send you the prepaid shipping label!
You've done an incredible job of researching and understanding what "clean beauty" is and what your own standards are in that arena. To me, sustainability falls right in line with the clean beauty mindset- we should care about what goes in/on our bodies AND how those things impact the world around us. Thank you for bringing so much awareness to this topic. It might be far off for you, because I know that your "brand" is self love, skincare, makeup... but, would you ever dive into the personal hygiene or home cleaning products realms in terms of toxicity, "clean" options, and sustainability? I would love to watch you do a video on that stuff.
I enjoyed your declutter. I also did my own recently. It makes me feel a little calmer somehow. So, watching you do yours had a similiar effect I guess. The gadget that smacked you in the face reminds me of those windshield visors. I get so frustrated with those!
This is awesome. Been waiting for smth like this for a while. As much as i love "clean beauty" products and can get over the packaging by buying it second hand or whatever its just so sad to see almost ALL of them having microplastic as an ingredient -.-
what ive never understood is why it isnt an industry standard to be able to send packaging back to c company and have them refill it or like use an industrial cleaner for repackaging???? Like Youth to the People has all glass jars, so why can't i just get stuff refilled?
LOVE this... I saw the email from Aether about partnering with TerraCycle. They're definitely at the top of my 'Try List'. Love everything they're doing.
I saw someone advertising reusable pocket tissues and I’m like...you invented a handkerchief. It’s a freaking handkerchief. 😂 Here for this content though. The consumerism in many you tubers videos stresses me out!!
There's a point in remarketing it though, so many people consider it to be gross and only social media pushing it will make it an acceptable alternative again.
Also, a website I recommend for sustainability in general is earthhero.com. Also, also, I’ve heard of the Surratt Beauty auto graphic eyeliner being refillable therefor better for the environment.
the surratt liner is BOMB. I have the brown one and it’s super matte but not drying, stays all day, doesn’t bleed or smudge and i love the refill option!
Hi Kackie, thank you for another fun video! Could you tell me your thoughts on the difference between the RMS Un CoverUp Foundation and the Elate Beauty Uplift Foundation? So far I know that they both have coconut oil and look like they have a whipped texture. Other than that, I am really curious if one feels more "dense" than the other if that makes sense?
Yeah the RMS is gross. It's really heavy and greasy. The elate is somehow feather-light. I can't recommend the elate enough. Don't bother with the RMS.
@@kackie Just what I wanted to hear! Is it weird how excited I am to save 20 bucks - with the added benefit of sparing myself from greasy af skin!? Thanks Kackie for the reply and for your advice! :)
In the zero waste realm, Etsy has quite a variety. The shop LittleStuff4U has an amazing selection! Might you do a review of beauty from Etsy? Love your reviews!
Maddy Z. Zero waste Etsy make up or less environmentally friendly Etsy make up? I thought I’d share some questions but also some thoughts on this subject because I’m interested in this subject too. My concerns on makeup that’s sold trough Etsy is that it’s not always tested or certified by cosmetic regulation in any way. Anyone can start selling cosmetics on Etsy without having to go through tests or regulations. So any claims of something being “clean” or “green” are not backed and proven in any way! There’s no way for the consumer to be certain that what they are putting on their face is safe. And I don’t think that all these shops have owners that are licensed cosmetologist that know what ingredients are safe for specific areas on the face. Or that the products have specific numbers to easily call back a batch of products Incase something is wrong with them. Do you know the Jacklyn Hill lipstick incident? It’s a great example of things that can go wrong in the cosmetic industry. On the other side, some shops are more ethical and than that they advertise themselves as. For example the shop sigil inspired: yeah they use plastic packaging but most of their eyeshadow is made out of synthetic mica and silica. Synthetic mica replaces real mica that is most likely mined by children and under payed workers with little to no safety equipement. And synthetic mica is also biodegradable. Lush uses it too instead of real mica. I don’t know if they test on animals though. And smaller shops have more control over where they get their ingredients from and how they package their products when sent off to the buyer. And you might support someone who is more sustainable in their personal life (depends on the person but I think that when you buy from a persons shop that deliberately uses no or less plastic in their products that they themselves are doing that in their personal lives as well). Well that was quite a slab of text. I’m going to leave it at that but now my thumbs need some rest XD. I’m curios to hear your opinions!
The dog rescue I foster for recycles animal feed and treat bags to raise money for the rescue. They use Terracycle. I think it's a great way to be eco conscious and help animals.
I know nothing about make up unless you’ve taught it to me lol so I have no options to contribute :( but I’m 100% for this and for learning about your capsule wardrobe!!

I have my eyes on the Alima pure concealer because it comes in refill pans. Also want the Besame mascara/liner cake refill. I'm more interested in the shadows, highlights, and bronzers pans from Makeup Geek over Colourpop because CP strategically models their business after fast fashion.
Also, if someone wants an item from an unsustainable, but quality brand, buy secondhand and support your local cobbler to fix it up as needed!
really great ideas
Oh my! I just found this video and youuuu! Gawd I do not often run into someone with high energy and similar ideas to mine and aaaaaah I am going to watch allll your stuff now haha!
Kackie! I originally came across your channel when I started my low impact journey a couple years ago. I started to move away when I realized all of these clean beauty companies weren't environmentally green. I AM SO HAPPY that your channel is evolving to include low impact/zero waste. Please keep it up! I love your reviews. Let's do the best that we can!! I'm still trying to find the best medium coverage "zero waste" foundation.
I’m so excited for your journey to lowering your waste in your beauty routines! If you’re interested in more suggestions for low waste makeup swaps, head to my channel!
I’m so here for all of your videos, your thinking is very similar to what I’m feeling. Thanks for producing awesome content
Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on the terracycle box.
After a LONGGGG week of grad school this is EXACTLY what i needed 😭🙏👏👏👏 thankkk youuuu
I enjoyed your declutter. I also did my own recently. It makes me feel a little calmer somehow. So, watching you do yours had a similiar effect I guess. The gadget that smacked you in the face reminds me of those windshield visors. I get so frustrated with those!
😂😂🙈 when visors attack
This is awesome. Been waiting for smth like this for a while. As much as i love "clean beauty" products and can get over the packaging by buying it second hand or whatever its just so sad to see almost ALL of them having microplastic as an ingredient -.-
I have so many suggestions for you! Head to my channel for more zero waste beauty content!
absolutely loved this video! also, love my salt pallet and creme tints! so perfect in every way 💞
what ive never understood is why it isnt an industry standard to be able to send packaging back to c company and have them refill it or like use an industrial cleaner for repackaging???? Like Youth to the People has all glass jars, so why can't i just get stuff refilled?
You are amazing and an inspiration! I love your thoughts on recycling.
LOVE this... I saw the email from Aether about partnering with TerraCycle. They're definitely at the top of my 'Try List'. Love everything they're doing.
Athr is absolutely amazing
This is the video I’ve been waiting for!!! Thank you so much for making it, struggling to find good, sustainable makeup :)
I have so many suggestions i could share lol sustainable beauty is my passion. Check out my youtube!
THANK YOU for this video!! So much inspiring advice and information💛
I love Zoja Beauty and Blue Root Naturals! Both doing great things in the way of sustainability and formulation!
Jillian Campbell I absolutely LOVE Zoja. I have all their little multitasker sticks and use the crap out of them
Wait- Hi Jillian!!!!
@@carlymorgan9564 hehe hey girl!!!!!!
The company Ren at Sephora has a recycling program for their products!
I love this backdrop
I'm so curious to know how you enjoy the elate foundation? I personally think they're mascara is the best non tubing mascara out there
WOW! Thank you! If you have any questions about the foundation our customer service team is always elated to help :)
I personally want to see ALL zero waste beauty with non-toxic ingredients 😍
YES. That’s why i started my channel in the first place
A Shelbi x Kackie crossover video is exactly what I didn't know I needed
I want to collab with her. She is in San Antonio! LOBBY HER.
CAN YOU IMAGINE OMG
I wish these kind of videos were more suggested to everyone!
this look is beautiful, and also this video was great.
I saw someone advertising reusable pocket tissues and I’m like...you invented a handkerchief. It’s a freaking handkerchief. 😂
Here for this content though. The consumerism in many you tubers videos stresses me out!!
There's a point in remarketing it though, so many people consider it to be gross and only social media pushing it will make it an acceptable alternative again.
lol the “last object” one? I know
Also, a website I recommend for sustainability in general is earthhero.com.
I realize this comment is a bit late to the party but I'm really curious about how Aether sources their gem powders?
ooh good question
Haven’t even watched this yet but my initial reaction is 😭😆😱 I am so excited for this video I can’t even.
You should check out The Minimalists podcast and documentary on netflix
My 11 yr old daughter wants to do her argumentative speech for school..."all makeup should be zero waste" what are credible sites she can reference?
WOW! What an incredible subject for your daughter to talk about!
@@ElateCosmetics she got an A :)
@@corissalandrith4013 Amazing! What an inspiration.
Kackie what happened to you truth or dare beauty video I had that in my watch on the weekend binge & it's not up anymore 😭
I love your shirt!! Where from?
Omg. I have not thought about Toddlers In Tiaras in a minute... lol.
Have you tried the 100 percent pure mascara?
In the zero waste realm, Etsy has quite a variety. The shop LittleStuff4U has an amazing selection! Might you do a review of beauty from Etsy? Love your reviews!
Does anyone know if Venics organics is gone? I can’t find them anymore
I hear ya sister! Good job!
Origins and lush close their own packaging loops.
In your previous video trying elate you complained about the concealer. Why are you still using it?
Can you do a video on etsy makeup?
Try Mad Hippie!
unrelated but I love the wide collar of your shirt
Totally related! Thank you! Haha
Apparently sea sponges are a dupe for beauty blenders.
Playa Hair has a program to send their hair product containers back. They are plastic containers, but they are recycling them for you.
The dog rescue I foster for recycles animal feed and treat bags to raise money for the rescue. They use Terracycle. I think it's a great way to be eco conscious and help animals.
I know nothing about make up unless you’ve taught it to me lol so I have no options to contribute :( but I’m 100% for this and for learning about your capsule wardrobe!!
etsy provides a lot of zero waste makeup ☺️
And, we need tp pay the price that allows these products to be available.
