This film takes you on a dangerous and perilous adventure, penetrating a region in Guinea Conakry which is on the borders of Liberia and Sierra Leone.
This region, frequently traversed by armed militia, is extremely rich in diamonds of great value since sixty percent of them can be utilized in jewelry.
The diamonds are extracted in an artisanal fashion near a town called Banankoro, where the religious fervour of its inhabitants is equaled only by their passion for diamonds and its trade.
You will see the bitter transactions between the miners and their bosses referred to in this country as « mastar ».
You will follow the collectors on their dangerous route taking the precious stones to Conakry.
You will participate in the tough negotiations between the transporters and the merchants of the capital city. All this takes place in a tense atmosphere under heavy armed protection, when thousands of carats will pass before your eyes.
The final destination of these diamonds is Antwerp. You will get a rare chance to see the “Rainbow Collection” belonging to Eddy Elsas, consisting of dozens of coloured diamonds.
Then in London you will learn the secrets of the De Beers building, one of the best protected places in the world, through which transits more than half of the world’s production of diamonds.
The jeweler Mouawad will let you into his world to show you his famous diamonds whose prices defy belief - several million dollars - and in particular a handbag fully inlaid with white and pink diamonds, unique in the world.

As an Africa Watching this makes me feel very sad and angry at the time. For the fact that Africa is very rich in soil but yet we are very poor in heart and head. I visited Guinea as a teenager in the 1960's. Very good video, and top quality narration (a rarity nowadays). I particularly like the stark contrast of the squalid conditions at the start of the process, .... all the way up to the pampered rich girl at the end of the video. Night and day.
2,300,000 Guinea Francs works out to around $240 USD. She got the better end of the deal.

It's toobad you had the documentary started all wrong… the diamonds is not the most rare, precious stone on Earth, nor is it the Worth the most money.. They are quite plentiful all over. When the market became oversaturated, the debeers FAMILY foundation, who owns most of the diamond mines in the world, had to artificially hold back stock in order to inflate the prices and give the illusion of Rarity. Especially now when you can buy a lab created diamonds at a slightly cheaper cost, This makes them all the more accessible to everyone. People did not even start giving a diamonds as an engagement ring until the 1950s when DeBeers corporation Realized only wealthy people were purchasing the stones. Bay began to make advertisements showing every man needed to present his future wife with a Diamond engagement ring. They also Came up with the made up " 3 months salary" Ridiculousness so that every man would make their largest purchase a diamond ring. Bigger than their home oftentimes, bigger than their vehicles, and often More expensive than the wedding itself. If this were the case, my boyfriend Would be giving me a $300,000.00 ring haha we joke about this. There is absolutely no need. And I've actually chosen a Tanzanite stone with diamond accents in a mix of 18 karat gold and platinum two tone ring. Tanzanite is a much rarer stone than any diamond... But from all the rumors in information that is given out there Few people would know it. I actually chose between a very light blue colored diamond and the deep blue of a natural tanzanite stone. Colored diamonds, are probably the only rare diamonds out there as there are very few in comparison to the millions of clear diamonds that are found daily. And as you have seen just from this documentary the miners keep very little of what they earn and they work very hard. Only the very upper echelons of society Make a huge profit from these Prolific gemstones. There are a couple of fantastic documentaries and movies, one is blood diamonds and older movie... Showing the terrible abuses and human cost of diamond mining. The other is a Episode or movie on Netflix that details the debeers corporation, And how they have come to be what they are today ( As well as how they have shaped our perceptions around the diamond). With an expert cut they are one of the most beautiful stones as far as brilliants in sparkle as well as I suppose perceived opulence. Take your time and look a little deeper into the practice of what you are buying, And you may find Purchasing an expensive diamond, Especially one that may not be from an ethical source, Is only meant to impress other people. I'm glad I became informed about this gemstone and I absolutely love what I chose Instead. Educate yourselves on what you are purchasing, And whether buying a diamonds or another gemstone- It is really all about just what it means between you and your significant other. Namaste ❤

I love the emphasis on the local people owning the mines and controlling the industry in Guinea unlike in other countries where outsiders have stolen the land and thus the profits.

Me too, I think its awful how they can barely make ends meet - definitely exploitation for their labour. However, a diamond is only truly valuable when it is cut (without being cut it is just an ugly stone), so the high value is only really put into it when it is painstakingly cut taking hours by a skilled jeweler who had years of experience to get it right, so I can see why they aren't getting paid much half as much as one would imagine.
@@thomasf1531 thats also false, since in poor countries there are gems cutters and people who do jewerly yet some european came and buy them innincredible low prices ( for the international market price) obviously a good deal in our coin... they re sell them in paris or usa and them suddenly the 700usd stone become 5k to 7000usd

A country's advantage in benefiting from a mining of expensive minerals is a matter of large scale production. A retail cottage outcrops by labor work is beneficial to a group of people only or to tribal host which the area belongs to.

I meant that a large scale mining concession avails public infrastructure, building hospitals and schools. A mining like a well digging by lowering a basket to be filled and then pulling back the robe and then transporting the unprocessed mineral to the sea port or airport and collecting the money from a company agent at five start hotel is cheaper and less trouble job for the buyers while the host where the mineral is hatched will miss a lot.

well you should know that are colored diamonds too and things like pink diamond with good color are extremely rare
i also do not find colorles diamonds special but still they are rare - more larger = more rare
