- Demersal seines are effective for catching flatfish.
If they are to be used along the Norwegian coast, the bycatch of cod needs to be minimized. In this research project, a new seine design is tested.
The seine is dragged along the sea bottom, and its opening is only 60-70 cm high. It catches the flounders on the sea bed, whereas cod and haddock both swim over it and escape.

This kind of fishing completely destroyed that ecosystem. Scraping the bottom causes a reaction in the microbiology that we wind up seeing as giant algal blooms. There are fungi and other microbiology that live on the bottom that control decomposition cycle that returns and replenishes all the nutrients needed in that ecosystem. That all gets killed and destroyed by this tillage. The algal blooms that are the result, use up all the oxygen and block out the light that comes through the surface, choking the remaining life there of breathable air. It’s the oxygen in the system that keeps the ecosystem healthy. If you take it away…everything will start to go anaerobic.

This is a big problem and the fishermen use that kind of way of fishing when they smash the system , In the Nordics we will soon have no cod and flatfish near after New Year, you must not fish for cod anymore as there is almost no one left one of the reasons is that the Dutch use boom trawl
