The NM sketch didn't get him into trouble until 2020, 12 years after it aired. He did get some flack from the Filipino Government for a sketch about a Filipina maid. And he had a big bust up with the BBC over a sketches about The Benefits Family, which they cut from a show just before it was aired because of some current news item concerning child neglect, leaving the show short by 5 mins. All ridiculous in my opinion.
Well both are well known in the west aka the anglosphere, but ask someone in Jordan or Vietnam who either of those people are and it would be like asking a Brit or an American who Jawaharlal Nehru is.
well i knew of both but im Aussie and we learn world history at school here well we did before they started changing history now here you just learn lies
@@krashd I'm a Brit who knows who Nehru was, and who MLK was, and who Haile Selassie was, just to pick another world figure. People of any race, age, or time, either pay attention and learn about stuff, or they don't bother.
I know Nelson Mandela as learnt what he did to change things and how he was locked up over 20 years, heard of Martin Luther King by name only, don't know who he is and what he did (I am from UK if want to know)
Nelson was duped into making some bad adverts when he got out of prison for a big payday, this is a pisstake of his mistakes and gullibility from not knowing the real world anymore.
He also has a character who is a South African rugby player who is crap with ladies. The genius with Harry is that in all three South African characters he has a completely different accent.
Harry Enfield always did a superb Mandela accent, so it was inevitable he was going to do a goofy character of him. Those ads were hilarious and quite obviously designed to be absurd. I think I remember seeing an interview of him where he said that, because Mandela was a very respected elderly statesman and was getting on, and had a rather slow monotone voice, that it would be funny to portray him as the opposite of that
Good shout! I was going to recommend this but couldn’t remember the character’s name. He’s way more offensive to South Africans than this Mandela skit! Iirc there’s one sketch where he chats with his new American friend who’s hyper-aggressive and stereotypical.
@@elitestarquake3597 That's the one. There were also skits where he tries to chat up a female gym goer and screws it up, one where he's helping a female to stretch and "has such a hard on, man" and then the one where he's in a wheelchair, talking about his friend 'Enis' and their great night out.
Hi king boomer there’s a really funny movie made by Harry Enfield called (Kevin and Perry go large) it’s very rude but absolutely hilarious. It’s a proper movie you and queen would love it if your interested
I have been a Harry and Paul fan since the early days and I love Kevin and Perry in the TV show - but I thought the movie, apart from one or two scenes - was a massive let down. Am I the only one??
Yeah well The US was the only country to use black face to mock African Americans so now all the bigots say all white people cant do it because we kinda look like americans.
Bill Bailey (comedian/musical prodigy). Performance at the Royal Variety Show is a good place to start. Like Tim Vine and Michael Mcintyre family friendly.
I have seen an advert on TV here in the UK,that Harry & Paul are doing something new very soon!I don"t think many people were offended by this character coz it was before Governments took away everyone"s sense of humour & being able to laugh at ourselves!Basically, before the "snowflake" generation!!!
I do question if government was like no stop all that as think most get offended but a lot of us enjoy these but thanks to how TV channels are they are not as daring to share this humour
Young people generally don't like the taste of alcohol, so alcopops were a genius way of getting them to drink loads of the stuff without hating the taste. They're still a big seller today, although the term alcopops has long been replaced by the marketing departments.
Luckily i got the taste for Woodpecker cider as a 6 year old in the mid 80's, by my early teens i was a regular drinker of it. It was actually only in my early 20's i fell in love with lager. 80's kids were deprived if the joys of alcopops, obviously i made up for that to in my late teens/early 20's especially with boozy Vimto, or WKD blue as it's known lol. I am a British pisshead and proud of it!😋
If you're portraying a bee you paint yourself yellow and black, if you're portraying an elephant you paint yourself grey, if you're portraying a black person it stands to reason that you'd paint yourself their colour (it would look pretty odd if you portrayed a black person but maintained white skin 🤔). Nothing in this sketch was mocking Nelson Mandela's pigmentation. We all know that "blackface" has historically been used in a derogatory manner, that does not mean that every person to paint their face black is using it in the same context.
I can remember when the film “ Invictus “ came out with Morgan Freeman’s fantastic portrayal of Nelson Mandela , Many a Brit said “ He looks the part but Harry Enfield did the voice better “ 😂😂😂😂
I think it's not offensive because it's SO ridiculous. Nelson Mandela was treated like Ghandi and Mother Teresa and to cast him as someone who would peddle drugs and alcohol is just so nuts, you could never imagine it happening.
Oh almighty boomer, you really need to check out the Mitchell and Webb sketches, they're my absolute favourite, I recommend; are we the baddies?, Numberwang, remain indoors and the historical reenactment

I'm not aware of them getting in trouble. The idea of the joke is that Nelson Mandela was a force for good and would never endorse these kind of products
Harry and Paul got in serious trouble for quite a few sketches. Most notable was the ‘Filipino maid mating attempt’ which got a complaint from the Philippine Embassy in the U.K.
The only reason I can imagine Harry Enfield not getting called out on this years later is either because nobody remembered or just didn't care in all honesty.
It is alright - not all South Africans like Nelson Mandela, particularly the ones who got out before the institutionalised brain washing started regarding the bombings, executions, "reverse" discrimination and expropriation of private business assets. To be fair, some of the latter stuff came about when they had a subsequent president representing Mandela's party, who was partially illiterate and couldn't count, but he was one of Mandela's cronies and hand picked to succeed him. To be fair, Harry Enfield is right in pointing out the fact that Mandela could just about get away with anything, so why not promote these products
The big difference between the US and UK is that a majority of black people in the UK see themselves as British and not African British. They don't separate themselves from us and we don't seperate ourselves from them. They get the humour. We do have racism in the UK but it's different. A majority of black people in the UK are descendant of the west indies which was a British colony and were therefore British citizens. So they were allowed to move to the UK and be free men/women. This was a result of the British fight against slavery in 1833 which was 32 years ahead of the US. Black people had to fight for their freedom in the US which is why the subject of slavery is still a bit of an open wound over there. Personally, I don't really care about race, I just see another inhabitant of Earth.
Yeah but the treatment and racism in the US especially from gung ho cops is on an entirely different level. Too many black people have died as a result. So I understand the sensitivity there.
It's ultimate comedy, making humour out of contradiction.Nelson Mandela was deified by the world's media. But he was just human with the failings of a human. This is what the exaggerated sketches are meant to show. He was a humorous man - he might have chuckled at the disrespect ?

As you have now seen the adverts, I now feel safe to mention: ‘Nelson Mandela Wants an iPhone’. (Luckily his unsuspecting friend, Fidel Castro (Paul Whitehouse) has one) 😀
Ironically.. White South Africans after watching the Show totally believed the clip so much.. they automatically went on the featured Web Stite and ordered the entire Stock. True Story.
The whole idea was that he was retired from being president, and his accent is of a certain type that they felt a comedy sketch with him doing some whacky stuff would be entertaining. He moves slowly as he was old at that point, and he was so clean cut as a leader that they wanted to depict his clean image as doing some naughty things 😊 people need to stop being offended: it is only comedy. It doesn't mean they didn't respect the man
Ah the good old days when the simple premise was nothing was 'off limits' for humour, it either succeeded or fell on its own merits.

If Mandela was that easily 'duped', why the heck did they put him in charge of SA?. Saying that though, America put Biden in, two BIG mistakes.
Harry Enfield was one of the first comedians I noticed growing up. He started off with a character called Loadsamoney who cracked me up!
