Wow! You've really done an amazing job with this e30 Frank! It's no easy task doing this kind of conversion. You've done BMW (especially the e30 community) proud!
E30 and Comanche. My favorite platforms. If we were neighbors, I'd be be that annoying neighbor always bringing over a six pack so I could hang out and wrench with you.
Mine only smokes after I went catless. Here are some really interesting findings. 1.) The car only smokes out of the left tailpipe(E90 335i). I found oil residue in the left tailpipe as well. 2.)The smoke only happens when the car is warming up and at idle for more than 10 seconds. It doesn't happen when its cold, or past a certain temperature range. So its a certain sweet spot. 3.) I have that I can alleviate the situation by putting load at stoplights until the car warms up. Fir example when I stop, I push the gas and the brake same time and hold it steady at 900-1000 rpm. I verified the smoke just magically disappears when I do this. One its gets towards operating temperature, I don't have to do it anymore. Its a hassle and annoying but stops embarassment. I have a Catch Can and Upgraded PCV. Considering I smoke out of one tailpipe amd I have zero misfires. I am sure its the turbo(it also has wastegate rattle). But what doesn't make sense is why does it only smoke when it warming up and why does it stop under load? Like it smells terrible and envelops the whole car, but when I do the holding gas pedal thing, smell disappears and smoke is gone. So odd haha. Car drives amazing though and hits target boost.
@@eltonlocklear7659 Final diagnosis, Front Turbo seal was bad. Under vacuum oil seeps past the seal. Once operating temperature seal expanded enough to stop oil leaking through. Holding the gas pedal put load and less vacuum just enough that oil didn’t deep past the seal. Weird temporary solution but it will only get worse. Holding the gas in Neutral or park didn’t work to stop smoke because of less positive pressure. Only in reverse or drive. I just turned the car off right away once in park. So this only works for autos.
@@eltonlocklear7659 I’m am not super knowledgeable about cars but I don’t think a downpipe install would affect anything. I used to have on old Supra running just the downpipe off the turbo itself and no smoke until the same happened, turbo seals going out. If you’re talking about the gasket being improperly installed you would hear an exhaust leak but smoke shouldn’t still be an issue. I’ve heard on these N54 everything is usually pretty stout. We don’t have the typical problems other cars do like head gasket failure, etc. We have issues with injectors, valve covers, turbos, some odd issues. A lot can contribute to a smoking car on these cars but they say and now I believe it, 95% of the time it’s the turbos. If you’re smoke is White with a hint of blue and smells like burning oil it’s the turbos 95% of the time. Just adding my input to help out brother. If anyone else can help or chime in sharing their experience that will be great too!
Oh yes. The video I've been waiting for. Cold start on the e30 N54 sounds awesome. I'm from S. Africa, I hope to make enough money, for me to, one day ship a classic BMW to you, to do an engine swap for me. The smoke could be the remaining oil burning from the exhaust
I just LOVE the build! But I'm sorry to tell you after doing the turbos that the N54 (I know you already know all this by this time LOL) are notorious for the valve covers going out of shape and or cracking etc. They leak on the inside often where the seals for the spark plugs go and leak oil down into them. Thus the smoke. You will experience misfires too if the oil continues to go in. Great work and I'll be subbing.
I was looking for a comment like that! Have also a 335 e92 N54 with blue smoke. Changed the spark plugs, upgraded PCV valve, Installed new oil catch can…..still smoking. Next step will definitely be valve cover gasket replacement and if the smoke persists, I’ll go with stem seals seals and walnut blast. Thanks for the comment!
Very happy with the new turbos! Nice video!!! Please record 0-60 and 1/4 mile with a draggy app or something. If you didn't tune for the new turbos to add more fuel or boost, I am sure you still had SOME gain, any ideas? Dyno? Can't wait!!!!
Hi, thanks for posting this. I own and personally maintain a 2008 335i n54. I have a few questions: 1) maybe it happened off camera, did you drain the oil? I have not done a turbo swap yet but i pictured the oil level in the oil pan is higher and will leak when the oil return line from the turbos are removed 2) when you drain the coolant, and filled it back up, how did you ask the electric water pump to do a self bleed/burp now that it in not in e90? 3) with the 17t turbos installed, are you required to retune the engine ecu? 4) did you purchase your 17t through amazon or ebay? Thanks for the reply in advance. Your videos are very informative

I watched all episodes of this build but cant remember what you did with drive shaft and rear carrier, did u went with a custom drive shaft and if you are using the stock rear carrier will it hold 450 horse power.... Also waiting for you guide and I assume there will be no information on A/C since you build this car without it. Thanks
That's right. I did a custom length driveshaft. almost necessary with these types of swaps. I also did not do AC so that won't be in the guide. The rear subframe is unmodified as of late. If my client wishes to update with a second diff mount that is entirely possible.
Very nice Frank. And affordable turbo's. Could you mention such a thing in the "show more" section, in the future? Or is this against YouYube regulations too? Dutch regards, Nico.
The smoke was decreased significantly, but still smokes slightly. we are thinking either valve cover (unlikely) or valve seals. May be an opportunity to just swap B58?!

I took the cats out of my 335i and it started smoking immediately (just a bit). So I would agree that you will expect a little smoke without cats.
Yup, and now that I've driven much longer lately, no smoke at all. Problem solved!

I cleaned mine completely when fitting new turbos.

The oil smoke remaining is from the valve steam seals
