Home Made Boat - Fibreglass - Part 1

  • My home made 16 and a half foot fibreglass over ply ski / leisure runabout. Took fifteen months to build and about $9500.00 including the materials to refurbish the trailer. Motor, windscreen, bimini top, CD player, etc were all extras. Pretty cheap in comparison to buying new at 40k. I'm in Logan City, Queensland, Australia ( near Gold Coast & Brisbane.

    You're a real clever guy, pleased to see you using self centering rollers. But the place you need them is at the back of the trailer so they grab you when you approach from any angle, rather than those blocks you have, also you dont need a centre oadded strip if the height is right. Great boat. Thanks for sharing

      I think he means if more people realize that they could build something as beautiful as this boat than they wouldn’t rush down to pay $60k for a boat from the dealer leaving only one thing for companies to do “lower the price “. Anyway you are an amazing craftsman. I like to build things myself but you are a mad man with skills. Great job thanks for sharing it.

    I bought the boat 8 years ago, from a friend and I made the cabin , the
    benches and the steering myself.
    The boat itself is made of aluminum and the cabin is made of wood.
    The outboard is a Johnson 9,9 hp build in 1975!
    I recently adapted it with hydrofoils and now it goes smoothly.

    Chopped strand mat was 400 grams per sq metre. 6 Layers on deck, cockpit and bow areas.
    Bare hull weight ended up being about 460kg which is light compared to some of the Australian production boats of a similar size and type.
    And I fibreglassed every bit of timber that went into it, inside and out, to stop moisture damage down the track.
    All the best with your project if you are planning one.

    Fantastic job Cameron, Im from Newcastle (Australia) and its good to see some Aussie creativity and ingenuity. I am in the process of restoring my 1973 Glastron GT 160 powered by a 135 Evinrude, which I have owned for 40 years. Found woodrot in the transom and thought Id only need to replace the rear end, had to replace every piece of timber in the boat. Nearly ready to install the floor now. Very laborious task but very satisfying. Have family in Brisbane, would love to meet up one day and share ideas. Keep up the good work.

    • @cameron300462
      @cameron300462  10 лет назад

      Hi Chris. Thanks. Yes very satisfying work when you see the results you wanted. I had a Volero Dart ( my first ever boat ) back in the early 90s and it was the same as your gt, transom floor and stringers all needed replacing. Streaker boats in Melbourne did mine for me back then. It is a common problem for older glastron and Volero ( which were glastron made under licence here I think. ) I have attached an ebay ad address for you to see what I use to have. Yours if Im not mistaken is like the 'Live and Let Die James Bond' boat?? Keep up the good work.

    Thanks Rick. Glad you like them. Registration is no problem. QT just issued me with a hull ID number and a rego number. Insurance is the more difficult. Club marine will do it if your boat goes through a checklist for seaworthiness/ safety at one of their issuing boat dealer agents. Marine Tune at Burleigh did mine when they fitted the 130. Havent insured the little one yet. Not quite finished.
    All the best and might see ya on the water.

  • @cameron300462
    @cameron300462  12 лет назад

    Cheers. Thickness of timber on the flat area on the bottom is 12mm. Curved areas underneath all 3mm. Deck/Cockpit area are a mixture of 12mm and 3mm depending on whether I needed to curve or not. Glass on hull is 8 layers of 400 crossed over on all the corner areas and centre board ( Basically making 16 layers in those areas ) and 6 layers on most of the deck work. Everywhere internally has 2 layers of glass for waterproofing as well.

    Yeah... you gotta try and do the right thing where you can. We were short a couple for the guys at the back but we were only doing about 8 knots on a very flat river anyway. Im always very much for the safety aspect when doing any kind of boating because when things do go wrong, you usually only get one chance.

    Im in the sign business Joel. If you build boats from moulds then just think about how much work goes into making the plug for the mould, and then the mould itself, and then youre gettin pretty close as to how much work went into building Ambitious from scratch. Lots and lots and lots of sanding. Thanks for your comment

    Over the raw glass you put a layer of a resin/q-cell mix and that is for shaping or smoothing of glass ( like bondo is ). It is totally compatible with the fg. Then I used a modified eurethane yahct paint and primer to finish off.
    On my later boat projects I have sprayed them with a 50/50gelcoat/durathane gloss mix out of a 3mm tip.

    Thanks Michael. 47 Knots flat out. Consumption Im not really sure about but Yamaha says 32 litres per hour at WOT for the 130. When we are away camping and tubing and wakeboarding and stuff, we go through the 80 litre tank in about 2 and a half days. Most of the time only running at about 3 to 4500 revs though. So not too bad I suppose for a 2 stroke. Hull performance: sits nice and flat and smooth on lake. Carves through 1 metre chop in the salt nice and softly.

    Na. No need for tabs or hydrofoils or anything like it. She runs beautifully smooth from start to finish, smooth water or rough. Engine weight not an issue. I could put a 250 on it if I wanted to with no dramas. If you check out part 3 video of performance on water you can see how smooth it runs. It takes a little time to settle first off because I had the trim set higher than usual right from the start.

    FIRSTLY. You are definitely the best example of boat building i have come across on RUclips.
    You have a wealth of knowledge from which I would be grateful if you allowed me to tap into.
    How many layers of fiberglass did you use oh hull and other parts specifically?
    after apply raw fiberglass mat and resin, what was you process for getting it smooth before painting?

    • @cameron300462
      @cameron300462  9 лет назад

      Aldean Louis Give your cured glass a rub down with a bit of 40 grit on a hand block just to take any spikes or lumps off it, then a mixture of resin and q-cells ( glass bubbles ) to make a buttery filler to spread on all over and sand back to a smooth finish with a random sander or sanding board with 40 to 80 grit. Final buzz over with 180 before prepping for flowcoat spray job.

    @Leeso2011 Cost for the hull alone was about $8500.00 including paint. I didnt have any plans at all, just a quick sketch I did of the finished boat. I used light hardwood rails for lines and stapled 3mm ply to hold form for glass layers. Layers of 12mm ply for transom areas with resin in between. 12mm floor. Round the edges of your timber before laying glass and resin on, and hand sand with 40 grit between layers. Prep your timber with a brush coat of resin prior to layers of matt. Good luck.

    hey mate just want to say excellent work on the boats (both ambitious and the mini bat boat)
    its really inspired me to look at building a boat myself for fishing purposes in and around the gold coast (being a gold coast local)
    I have a question, what procedure do you have to go through (if any) to get a home made boat registered? are there any design standards it needs to abide by or does it just need to pretty much float.
    thank you in advance, kind regards
    Rick.
