i think the MAIN takeaway from this is that fishing trawler's default exp/hour should be buffed by like 10x

Just from running the numbers after the collaboration: I think the net-crash is caused by integer overflow -- Josh probably would have received more than 1024 sharks from this specific looting, crashing the interface/math in its entirety.
So maybe they use a tinyint in the background with a multiplier or something? That value is odd to me
@@brycet93 They likely use 10 bits for the quantity and use the remaining bits for something else. You could imagine that all items have a bit used to identify (for example) last man standing gear or smth. Or loot that you have collected, but not claimed yet like in the one maze in the mining cave.
if they're using 16 bits, the remaining 6 could be used as the item id.

Were there any instances of him getting 1000-1023 of anything at any point? 1024 is 2^10, so as @brycet93 points out, an integer overflow seems unlikely (integer types tend to also have powers of 2 as their exponents; 2^32, 2^16, etc). The crash could also be an interface not designed to handle four display digits - also rather strange to me, as lost of other places in the game handle this just fine, but this minigame is plenty jank in other ways so who knows.
@@le__birblike Josh showed in the video, when they patched the trabsfering items between a main and an ironman through a store (like apples which he did in the video) they didnt patch every store. So runescape has a great trackrecord of having many things be individually coded

I did a round of fishing trawler yesterday for the diary. I saw the bit about the xp not scaling and thought it was a weird thing to update. This doesn't make sense, but it does clear up the confusion

Computer science nerd here - my theory on the 80k 'limit' is that it isn't intentional. I would bet that as part of logging and trying to do bot detection, they save some information about every xp drop, including the estimated xp per hour based on recent activity.
If the period in which they calculate that estimated xp per hour is shorter than 5 minutes (a fishing trawler run), then as far as the math is concerned, you just made 80k xp in one game tick, so your estimated xp per hour is incredibly high, probably going over the 32bit int or something. It quickly drops down again as it realises that you're not continuously getting those drops on every tick, but it's too late - for a single tick, it was too high for it to handle.
The above is just an example I thought of and is a hell of a stretch, but based on the momentary disconnection (definitely a thread crashing and then a new one taking over the connection), it feels more like an unintentional server-side crash than an intentional xp limit.
Someone else mentioned they might be catching more than 1024 of a single type of fish which is what's causing the crash when they click the fishing net

If the second 80k+ run was immediately after the first the it seems he got about 110k exp from it.
Went from 126k to 16k and you don't get fishing exp from within the trawler, only looting.

It's not the XP since other systems award higher singular xp values, and those systems tend to be pretty copy and paste. It has to be the quantity of fish in the bag. I bet it surpassed an integer value like 1024 or 2048 and the underflow is what killed the xp, since that's calculated after the opening the bag and after counting the fish

I'm a game programmer, although not on osrs, and I think the disconnect thing is probably not about the amount of xp, it's probably the way the fish is coded, it probably loops through giving each fish individually, and running through like 2000 iterations of the loop probably triggers like an infinite loop detection, since it should normally only go up to like 40.
a better way to code it would be to just calculate the total fish of each type in advance instead of calculating each fish every iteration through the loop lol

Hi hannanni, I saw this done and I believe what you and your team did here was wrong. You helped somebody abuse this bug to get an achievement/what they wanted. Then reported this bug and got it patched, after this individuals agenda was accomplished. Now it is impossible for anyone to beat the record because you got the bug patched. If you were going to report the bug and get it patched, why wait until after you got to abuse it? If you find out about a bug, you need to report it immediately. This is blatant bug abuse which is a clear violation of jagex terms of service.
