How To Drive Your First Ferrari: Everything You Needed To Know, But Were Afraid To Ask

- Today I am down at Meridien Modena in Lyndhurst, once again. The 550 is having some work done and I have a few hours to kill, so I've come down to the showroom to film a piece I've wanted to make for quite some time.
I go through just a few of the things you might need to know about driving a Ferrari, if you're going to be doing it for the first time. By and large these are easy cars if you know what you're doing - but a few things might catch out even a seasoned driver. Enjoy

Hey Jay, the Ferrari 360 has been my dream car since I was 9 years old - and mine arrives tomorrow. I've been doing everything I can to learn how to operate these delicate little wet napkins that go fast, so thank you for the very well spoken guide.
Ive just learned that I’ve got way too much time on my hands!
First time trying to select reverse in a 575M was good for a laugh - for the schoolchildren watching me anyway. Followed five years and thirty thousand miles later by the actuator coming off in my hand. Gotta love Ferraris.
I believe the most important thing is to remind new drivers of how low the nose is on these cars. Exiting driveways, parking nose first, and going over speed bumps isn’t something most people think about too much, but need much caution in cars like these
Hi, what does parking nose first mean?
@@ansarchoudhury6030 parking nose first lol so back in so you dont take your front bumper off on the sidewalk or parking block
These videos are always refreshing. There are only so many "should I buy a Lambo?", "My friend just bought a..." or "taking delivery of..." videos one can watch.
I can’t believe I’m watching a video of how to get into a car.

In a lot of modern vehicles, you need training on how to drive them. Especially if your an old school driver like I.

Hey James, there's a trick about 360 and 430, if you want to avoid breaking the door handle (happens eventually..) - most people pull the handle and then pull the whole door through the handle. You shouldn't do that to preserve the handle... you should open the door by pulling the handle and then open the door wide by grabbing the side of the door rather than pulling the whole door by the handle. Don't know if im clear...
JayEmm - you should do one on buying your first Ferrari, covering good first Ferrari choices, financing, what to look for, some good specialists etc...

It is videos like this that make your channel a real one of a kind! Who else would cover the topic of actually going into detail about what it would be like to have your life defining Ferrari first drive? Yet another incredible vid Jay, you master!
Thanks Dave! I tried to put a lot of effort into this one, in the hope that it'll be of use to somebody
"might not have central locking". I had so forgotten that cars didn't have that. Flash backs to having to reach back and unlock all the doors then waiting for everyone to get out so you could lock them all again. 😂
Never knew there were so many differences and subtle things to know about operating these cars.
Avoiding seat bolsters, one of life's great games. Even in my Leon Cupra I always arch over the seat bolsters to avoid wear and tear. My misses thinks I'm a bit of an idiot.
Meanwhile grab one of her Loubotins the wrong way and she'll scream at you XD
Doing that is an excellent idea, my recaro driver seat is 14 years old and 200.000km and it still looks very nice.

Meridien’s service centre is built over my old school’s cross country route. Something for which I was very grateful for when I was 15 😀
They made a Valeo gearbox too briefly. A manual without a clutch pedal. Very fancy for the time, very collectible today.
One F40 with the Valeo box was reputed to have been built.
We have a similar thought process at our flying club. Every so often someone says "Surely, everyone knows that!" Well, no, not always. :-)

So please sir, check your comments before you send them because they alone, are enough to make a sensible man a common man .
Thank you.
The Roma is such a good looking Ferrari. My favourite looking one in a long time.
This is the kind of Ferrari videos I always wanted to watch, thank you so much!
As Lotus Esprit owner and having test driven a couple Ferrari's this was a very informative video. One of the best I have seen on the do's and don'ts. Great job.
Thanks!
We're all out here trying to work out how to afford one in the next 30 years and Jay is hitting us with vids about how to climb in and out like that's an issue we're dealing with 😂
You can get a 360 for 40k on a loan, drive it for a year and sell it for 40k again.
Most old ferraris like 360 or 430 are basically free nowadays, all you need money for is gas, tires and brakes. And hope nothing brakes
@@tnikoli40 so your "free motoring" tip is to Go and buy a Ferrari. I wonder, Is your financial advice firm successful?
Lesson #1, do NOT turn the Manettino switch to ESC! The ESC position should be called the RUclips Video switch! Learn to drive it with lots of miles in the Comfort mode before you switch to Sport. My first California took 6 months of daily driving to get fully used to the power under any condition.
At first I thought this might end up being a filler episode which I’d skip through but I found it really interesting, all I need now is a Ferrari.
You did a great job explaining everything. I just bought a 2006 F430. The car didn't come with any books, and everything in the trunk is gone, one key. I was a little steamed about that, but it was used. I did not know to downshift, step on it a little. I'll have to try that. Thanks
Well I found it informative, even if others perhaps didn't.
It was a good way to make content out of a "situation" as well.
One thing I was advised to do when starting my 550 was to put ignition on, and wait for the ECU to do its diagnostic, and then (hopefully!) show a "CHECK OK" on the dash display, and then start the engine. This helps avoid a possible ECU fault. Same goes for the 355 as well I think?
Your knowledge on these Ferrari's bro wow..... quite legendary no doubt.
Brilliant mate 👌
That 512tr... Nice. If I would ever have a Ferrari, it'd be something like that.
So the first was a Mondial, not exactly earth shattering but lovely leather, the next was a 328 -what a lovely car - best comparison probably an Elise - so much fun and slow enough to properly hear the V8
The thought process you use to make videos like this is so refreshing . Well done mate and your presenting skills are top notch. I've had a number of embarrassing moments with unfamiliar cars and bikes and it really distracts from the driving / riding experience in a very brown pants kind of way. When armed with a lot of horses it's so important to do your research first so your focus is looking what's out in front of you rather than searching for a button or lever. The F40 at the end tho, made me chuckle 😅
This must be a record, James managed a full 7 minutes without mentioning Lotus this time
He mentioned Lotus at around 3:35
Great idea for a video. To a lot of people driving a Ferrari for the first time probably is quite daunting
On the round Ferrari fuel filler cap it’s worth lightly greasing the screw thread. On my 1993 Mondial 3.4 pressure in the fuel system made it extremely hard to turn the cap, grease helps. It still resisted & a socket wrench plus a 3-pronged device to remove an oil-filter, works well!
On earlier Ferrari’s the radiator needs bleeding by unscrewing a knurled brass bleed valve. 308GT4’s have them
Watching you get in and out of the F40 was my amusement for a slow work day. Great video, and not too condescending, which is a difficult balance given the subject. Remember my first 360 drive (near Le Mans, thrown the keys by the owner (who had been drinking) with the car surrounded by French kids, who I was then expected to take for a drive around the town), had no problem starting the car, getting in was an issue as stamped on the accelerator of the already running car (for that max revs sound appeal!). Then with one of said kids already installed in the passenger seat, asking questions in broken Frenglish, I had no idea where the light switches were (it was about 10pm and they were necessary) trying not to look stupid for 'les enfants'! As you said, once installed and everything running was simple and entertained about 12 kids for an hour or so.
I absolutely loved this video. Doubt I will ever drive a Ferrari, but enjoyed the contenet. I do hope everyone watched to the very end. Gettingb oyut is much harder than getting in. I have to use many of the same tecniques at my age in the RS7. Old bones are not as nimble as they used to be I ahve noticed. Good job James - very original content.
Love the Saab 93 convertible at 13.37👍
That 16m scuderia its like Scarlet Johansson if we compare it to a women
Interesting video to introduce people to driving a Ferrari.
Have to say I would disagree with blipping an F1 box yourself on downchange - I can't see anyway of timing this well enough to coincide with the clutch being engaged/disengaged and of course the car already does it for you. However, you can be accelerating hard and call for a down change which in the case of the 16M will engage SF2 60 millisecond gearchanges on the down change - people often assume it is only available for upchanges. The other thing to mention is that the F1 box isn't sequential so does allow for jumping gears, particularly useful for an overtake. Also worth noting the Schumacher bumpy road setting is only available in Race or above, pushing it in Sport does nothing - CT is the perfect dry road mode.
My first Ferrari drive was taking an acquaintance’s Rosso Corsa Testarossa from Sheffield to Edinburgh, 190 miles for a service that was included in the purchase price. It had done 20+K miles. Started off going over M62 in driving rain. Quite scared, big 5 litre lump behind me, massive tyres, RWD. Behaved impeccably. Weather improved on M6 & it just loped along so comfortably at 90 eating the miles. At M6 services parking wasn’t easy with those huge tyres. It took up 1 1/2 spaces cos of width & crowd gathered to look at it. Bit of fun with open gate gear-lever on the A roads driving east: got out fresh as a daisy at Edinburgh despite the seats looking so thin. I loved it. Not a sports car but a proper GT that could cover continents. I described it as like a very big friendly and powerful but good natured horse. Only regret? Volunteering to fill it with petrol. Credit card took a big hit!
I think that's what Testarossa has always been designed to do. Yes it has the engine in the middle and yes it has supercar looks, but it is a grand tourer through and through. Even the boot at the front is cavernous. Sounds like a joyous trip, I think.
A great tutorial on what to expect if you're lucky enough to test drive a Ferrari. I can't imagine the dealer allowing a stranger to drive the car alone. Lets drive a 458 or am F12 to get an idea of a V12 GT vs a mid-engine.
The Roma may drive great and have updated electronics but it doesn't look like a Ferrari in the grill and tail areas. I'd get a Portofino and that way you have the retracting hardtop too.
With the F40, it's like it's happy for you to get in, but it doesn't want you to leave... Frankly, I'm not sure I'd want to. Great video! Kept me engaged all the way through!
Here we gooooooo 🥁 loving the channel as always. Much respect from the kindest pastry in britain
Thank you kindly
Thank you for taking the time to share this with us... there are a lot of us out there who are indeed afraid to ask...
I'm not a Ferrari guy but I am a car enthusiast so this is rather interesting 👍🏻
That 512tr is perfection, everything a Ferrari should be.
Shame they are not £45k anymore!
The only thing that Roma lacks are LEDs chasing back and forth, in the bonnet. What a stunner.
The first Ferrari I drove was the F355 F1 in 2000 and I never forget the salesman telling me on the first drive to be careful with the brakes! We know they are fast cars, but they also stop faster too! Therefore, anyone on your tail at high speed will not be able to stop as quickly causing risking a prang! At high speed, you do need to check your mirror to ensure the car behind has the required stopping distance should you jump hard on the brakes!
For someone like me who's never been in a Ferrari, this video was highly informative. Thank you 😍
Not wrong with pedal placement, had a go in a 360 spider. The pedal box is way left (in Australia) because of the front wheel arch. Took a while to get used to
It would have been rude not to .. thank you for the valentines present, it’s always nice to look under the red and black lingerie 😍
Thank you! F430 in manual is my current dream but literally they have been going up about 10K US a month for the last year 6 months. I still want a clean black one though right now lol
I think they're all going up. 458s are too

Great idea for a video, really enjoyed watching it! Great info that I will probably never put to good use...
You say that, I got thrown the keys to a 360 quite a few years ago by the owner (as per my comment). You never know!
@@RobIpswichUK I need wealthier friends! Did you throw the keys back or are you still on the run?
@@cPIP36 Ended up becoming friends and regularly go down to Le Mans (outside COVID times) with them and a group of other owners. In a way they were one of the reasons I bought my 993, when you find out that (as long as you have the space etc) buying, owning and running a Ferrari/Porsche/Aston etc isn't actually out of reach

Highly doubtful that I'll ever own a Ferrari, but if I do, I'll shoot for a manual F430. Regardless, this was very informative! And the F40 bit at the end was entertaining af! 😂
Porsche: Just open the bloody door, get in, start.
3:07 is real. ~2019 my son had some classmates over working on a video project. All had their driving licenses in the 'States (16yrs old) and one scene called for a young lady to drive our late 90's SUV a short distance to "arrive" in scene. Our son spent an inordinate amount of time explaining things prior to her driving maybe 20 yards, we just assumed he was trying to impress the poor girl or something. As it turns out though, she had never driven a vehicle that 1) required you twist a key in the ignition to start it and 2) had a column shift...nevermind a key to open the door, lol.
Hahaha. They never had to get off the couch to change the channel on the television!
very informative - thank you, when I buy/drive my first Ferrari I will have a better idea of what to expect, thanks again
That 360CS is beautiful. My Ferrari poster cars as a child skipped from F40 to the 360CS. Buuuuuuut, if I was in Meridien Modena with a stupendous amount of cash burning a hole in my pocket then it would be the Dino I think I'd be signing for, simply gorgeous!!!
First time (and last thus far) Ferrari F430 around Silverstone. Great video again.
I could watch you exiting the F40 over and over again. 😂
I love your videos, I learn so much with each one!
Sadly for me, this video is unlikely to have lessons I am ever going to need lol 😂
Never say never
Don't let you down fella! Be ambitious and every dream is possible 💪
What a great experience. Can’t wait to go to a car show
idk how to do it but you might benefit from adding the chapters to this video so people can find info on specific cars/transmissions easier. Really interesting video, thanks
I really didn't think the F1 gearboxes would be _that_ similar to the ZZW30 SMT, even down to the reverse beep. Only differences I noticed are gear selection (SMT uses a level to select neutral and reverse), downshifting (SMT will rev-match on its own), and idling in gear (SMT will not return to neutral on its own).
A classy 'Tuber's version of a churn video. Nicely done! Agree that the fuel-release-only-when-ignition-on thing is infuriating in that gen car... it's sister infuriating oversight (which you didn't mention) is the lack of a trunk/frunk release from outside the car
Brillant video, love the detail, keep them coming!
Thanks Jay. I’m looking at getting a 430, so great info!
Battery condition is important on the F-430 in particular, yes? So much depends on the proper voltage being available.
I like how he talks like we are all going to own one the only Ferrari I can afford is driven by a remote control or pulling it back and letting go.
Same here, but I really enjoy the 458 on forza horizon
It is possible to afford a Ferrari and I’m on my sixth since 1982, but all have been in the lowest price bracket. I’ve had 4 308GT4’s & 2 Mondial’s. These are manual gear-stick transmissions with no driver aids altho the Mondial’s from 1988 have abs. The 3.4 Mondial t has power-steering.
Provided a low price Ferrari has a comprehensive history file & checks out ok there prices currently can be from £20,000 to around £45,000. Servicing is relatively inexpensive on 308GT4’s & the Mondial’s up to my 1988 3.2 QV. My annual oil change and brake fluid change cost £300 plus Vat. On these cars a new cambelt is needed every 3 years as a must do at £600 to £1200 plus vat.
Watch John Pogson on The Drive, RUclips reviewing a Mondial 3.0QV and as he says “you don’t need to spend £200,000 on buying a Ferrari” The cheap ones are just as much fun and are great to drive! Plus the Prancing Horse badge gets me into amazing events!!
The servicing the 3.4 Mondial is much more costly tho as the engine has to be removed.
Join the Ferrari Owners’ Club & once you have owned any Ferrari you can be a member for as long as you pay the subs. The people in it are just enthusiasts. All easy going.
Thank you @JayEmmOnCars ! I have a drive in an F360 tomorrow and I found it very useful. I just have it for a lap on track so especially the gearbox info
This may not have been a planned video but I do like the occasional random video like this, telling us the sort of stuff most of us would never otherwise hear.
A standard F430 is similar in performance to my 981CS (few tenths either way on most tracks, identical on the 'Ring) but I know a few people who have driven the F430 and all say it's a bit mad which the 981 is not at all, so I'd love to drive one to see how they compare.
...also, not a fan of having capacitive buttons for everything, what's wrong with buttons? While not impossible to learn their positions, it's a lot harder to be sure you're pressing the right button without looking.
The F430 is totally different experience to a 981. Track time numbers are so misleading. Real world performance might even be similar, but the feel and sensation of the Ferrari is a world away from the 981.
@@JayEmmOnCars Thanks, that's pretty much what I'm expecting- while I suspect the 981 is faster down a B road in the hands of anyone sane, I feel like pure performance was never entirely the point of a Ferrari- they have some magic that puts a big grin on your face by just sitting in one whereas a Porsche really doesn't feel special until you poke it.
Is it blasphemous to say I actually prefer the way the 981 sounds though?
Swiss Toni “driving your first Ferrari is like making love to a beautiful woman”
That's right Paul
First, you've got to open her up delicately. Then, if entering from the right, you stretch your left leg over as far as it'll go, or your right if entering from the left. Next, you've got to lower yourself in gently, ensuring a nice snug fit. Finally, you have to be careful when pulling out - visibility can be surprisingly limited.

Thank you James for one of the best videos. It was a joy to watch and leaving in the last 30 seconds of your video made my day. I hope to buy a Ferrari one day but I need a rear seat (I have a dog I take to work each day, yes I know that sound stupid but it’s true !) so it’s got to be a California for me so if you get to drive and review and compare the original and the T and let me know which is better that would be great. Plenty of helpful information.
Would be great if you did a video on how to buy your first Ferrari. What models should you look at? Obviously want to avoid horrible depreciation. What models work out better to finance? Should you finance through dealer or independent provider like Magnitude? Should you go main dealer, independent, or even private to buy?
That TR is absolute mint and looks mega. Still love 430 Coupe.
Yeah - I drove the 430 Scuderia around the track in Vegas. That car is Frak'n scary.....
Its a great video BUT I already knew everything. I bought all these cars in Gran Turismo. I prefer L2 and R2 on my gamepad for changing shifts rather than this robust plastic piece in the car. I also think you overemphasized how gentle you have to be with them. I have crashed many times during a single lap in GT and at best it has a small scratch if any. They all run like a dream, I have no idea what all these people do with these external batteries. Sometimes I don't drive my Ferraris for months but all I have to do is press my foot on the gas and they start right away. Most of the times I don't even need fuel. They are expensive but definitely worth it for all the reasons I mentioned above. I rarely use reverse though, I prefer to just press the center of my PS4 gamepad to reset me on the track. That way I can do my groceries shopping much more efficiently even if I crashed a few times along the way.
hahahaha!! Don't forget, your cars dont depreciate either!!!
This was kinda fun, learned a lot. Man that Roma is gorgeous. Thanks.
I have driven 2 Ferraris a 355 at Snetterton on a day called the Supercar Experience and a 430 scuderia in Moderna with a race instructor sitting next to me. The scud is one noisy car very raw like the Lotus Elise with a lot more power
Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance :) Great video, nice to see something a bit different.
Excellent video - thank you and well done ✅
Could well be a world first.. practical Ferrari advice for non Ferrari owners.
It's good to know that even on the"small" Ferraris the width of ones shoes is more important than the width of ones arse. Loved the F40 workout moment btw... Maybe your next super car should be a push bike, I remember McLaren making one a while ago

Late night? Its 10 am here where i am lool
Balky 2nd gear when cold; I own an old Alfa GTV6 and have the same issue. I merely let the engine warm up for a minute, then take off on my drive. ...and I skip 2nd gear until I've driven a good ten miles or believe the gearbox has warmed up sufficiently. It beats the heck out of trying to force the car when it's not really ready yet.
Th 360 cs and the 430 scudria 16m are great but I prefer the 458 Italia.
Sad that Ferrari might not keep a conventional RPM counter instead of a dash. Porsche did right when they at least left the RPM between the 2 digital screens.
