I feel like it doesn't take it long for it to get to the 3-8 leaf stage. I mow that stuff and I swear within the next hour it's full grown. Great video like always and thanks for the insight.

Just stummbled upon your channel. Very informative. I am battling Kylinga in St. Augustine in central FLA. I used Blindside in the spring and it did not completely remove it but knocked it back. Now the temps are over 90 and raining everyday so the Kylinga is back. Should I try the Monument?
Matt...thanks so much for all the help you render at the grass factor channel. I spot spray nutgrass in yards for NO hextra charge. These battery powered sprayers have been a big help in applying controls.
This was a totally awesome presentation about tackling my bane this summer, Yellow Nutsedge. Thanks for taking the time to discuss the fortes and limitations of these products.
I would like to try "Monument" on my lawn. Are these products safe when it comes to our health? I don't want to get cancer or any other illness from it.
I have found the best technique to kill nutsedge - ( I am NOT a professional - just a guy who's tried everything) - is to mix 5 parts Spectracide (black bottle) with 1/10 parts Tenacity. I then load it into a meat (marinate) injector, and inject it into the soil about 1 1/2" below the surface at every nutsedge crown. It works.
Great discussion, thank you. Seems like yellow nutsedge, goosegrass and creeping violet are my primary challenges here in northernOklahoma. They're in both the Bermuda and fescue areas of the lawn. Based on what you shared here I'm thinking about using sledgehammer over dismiss.
I've mostly used the Sedgehammer on nutsedge in cool season turf. One thing I have noticed is that if you don't use up all your product mix in one day it really loses it's effectiveness.
Velvethamma that is such a great point! I forgot all about it. It used to state that in the prosedge label, but they did not include it in the sedgehammer label.
Had my petrol tank removed for a pump replacement on my truck.Mechanic gave me two large containers of bad fuel.One10mm paintbrush attached to a garden cane, dabbed nuts edge in my flower beds, small ones dead next day, large ones two applications, the odd one three. All gone, none returned.
Like comprehensiveness of your presentation and detailed qualifications and stipulations for application. Only wish you had included best/most economical locations for purchase. Thanks
Good stuff. I thought nutgrass was a type of turf at first, and it grows about 4x faster than my mostly tall fescue which is a PITA. Thank you for the breakdown.
I run it 3x per year at 4 oz per acre and use a surfactant. Use it on St Augustine as well. Im in TEXAS! Never seen any burn or issues. Did this for years. Mix it with MSM Turf.
I used Sedgehammer last year... and the year before that... and the year before that. It is only a defoliant, and doesnt stop nutsedge from spreading through the root system.
Matt another great informative video. I've been in the business for 18 years out in NJ. Seems like nutsedge is running crazy out here. I've try all the products you discuss( dismiss, sedgehammer, prosedge, echelon) have good results knocking it down for the season but also comes back like crazy next season. Wondering if you are seeing the same the following season? Doug
Hope Dismiss is not too rough on Centipede. I have blanket sprayed my 1/2 acre and it has smashed the nut grass very well!! Minor yellowing but it has bounced back quick.
I have a large raised garden that has rose bushes and had vegies. I found your video and am intrigued as I am on my wits ends. I have not heard of the three products you mention in your post, have used Ortho products that have been inefficient and could damage my roses. I am in Arizona so the nutshedge starts in April all the way through October, or at least while it is hot. The weed is interfering with the growth of my roses. My questions are: 1.What product would you recommend for a rose garden? I have to get rid of this grass. 2. What product will do the least amount of harm to the rose bushes? 3. If I use any of these products, will I ever be able to plant veggies again? I have also considered just replacing all the dirt, going down about 4-5 feet, but have been told that will not work as the "roots" probably have spread down that far. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Great presentation full of information to think about. What would you use on a six week old lawn of Tiff Tuff Bermuda sod in Las Vegas In June to kill Nut Sedge?
Sledgehammer has best efficacy while the plant is in the 3-8 leaf range, and anything outside of that will require multiple applications? Thanks Matt incredible channel!
I don't have a problem with nutsedge in the lawn. It's just invasive in the landscape beds. What's the strongest chemical I can douce these grasses with?
Sulfentrazone. Do not use Sulfonylurea herbicides such as Certainty or Sedgehammer unless the label specifically lists the plants you are treating around as tolerant.
Thanks, Matt excellent technical video. We live in NJ use spot spray tenacity & blanket with Weed B Gon. We have nutsedge in flowerbeds with goosegrass or dallisgrass can't blanket spray leaning spot spray?
I am in AZ. Nutsedge took over my front yard. I had it dug out, professionally treated for nutsedge, and artificial grass put down. The nutsedge is now coming up through the artificial grass. I have no other plants ar trees that I am worried about, so which is the best option to KILL this?
I broad cast spray and can't put it in my 300 gallon tank and make it profitable to do it . Spot spaying is my only option and I put it in my contracts that this is a added cost !
What is your background with chemicals? And chemical applications with regards to plants. I've never seen anyone have such a good grasp of chemicals as they apply to plants.
We use monument or Katana for spring transition. The problem is the nutsedge starts to come up after we have killed of the rye and poa. So at 10 bucks a gram we are talking about an expensive proposition to reapply at the high rate. What kind of residual control do you get at 15 grams? Have you tried lower rate with urea for Sedge control? We get good results with fert adjuvant for cool season grass control.
Hey, I have been subscribed to your videos for about 3 months. You are very knowledgeable and I do learn a lot from you and practice it in my own lawn care business. You sound like a veteran in the business for 40 years! You are on your way to 15k subscribers and getting paid for your knowledge on the subject by youtube! Enjoy the videos very much! Couple topics I hope you touch on, but I won't put on this comment, just to see how you go about some things. Keep up great work!
Any thoughts on Image concentrate? I like the idea of using it as a spot treatment, sprayed on the base of the nutsedge. I don't have enough nutsedge (yet!) to warrant a full yard treatment, and I like the idea of having it available for small treatments at all times. With a single sedgehammer packet, I'd probably only use one tenth of the gallon mix and be forced to discard the rest. Dismiss seems like a great option later if the nutsedge gets out of control and if we can't get control over yard-wide spurge growth.
If I mix Dismiss and Sedgehammer, as you suggested for major nutsedge/zyllinga problems, do you recommend a surfactant (since it's needed for Sedgehammer but not advised for Dismiss)?
My new home is on a lake here in eastern Virginia. The nutsedge is out of control. The previous owners did not maintain the lawn well at all. Just wondering what you would suggest. Thanks
Hey I want to say thank you for making a video explaining all this! I have zoysia in my yard and I have pansies and clover overtaking my front yard and crabgrass, dandelions and lots of nutsedge in the back yard!! Any advice is appreciated. Do you recommend Monument for residential use and is it safe for dogs? Thank you!
+Kali M. Monument is safe for residential use and used within the label rate, you should not have any issues with dogs. I looovvveee monument. Monument is a very expensive product and requires a very precise application. Keep that in mind if you choose to not hire a professional
Hey thank you! I was thinking of doing it myself. Yes it is VERY expensive it better work! =) I was just going to read the label and follow the instructions. I assume it requires just water? Does it need a surfactant? What kind of "precise application" are you referring to? Thank you for your help!
Nice video! I purchased Sedgehammer a month ago but have not used it yet. Is there a difference in spraying it on longer yellow nutsedge, or is it better to apply after cutting the lawn. I cut to four inches over the summer. After a week of not cutting the grass and a lot of rain here in PA in late June through July thus far, some of my nutsedge grows to eight to 10 inches. Thanks!
Will the Katana or Monument completely kill out perennial rye or just stunt it down to allow the warm season grass to come in quicker? My perennial rye looks so good right now, but I worry about it transitioning come Spring. Also, being that I put Ewing Eagle perennial rye, it's somewhat expensive and I'd like it to come back on its own this next cool season. Suggestions? By the way, definitely the most informative channel on RUclips for anyone that loves to geek out on their lawn with numbers, as I do!
+Andrew P. Thank you thank you! Katana and monument will completely kill the rye. If you don't spray it out, you will definitely lose some density in your bermuda. These new hybridized rye grasses are incredibly strong. I saw a football field fertilized with 46-0-0 every two weeks to burn out the rye, have the half of the rye green back up with every rain fall all summer long. Lost a ton of bermuda. I'd just budget in overseeding it every year. And because it is so strong, wait til may or mid may to spray it out and pop the bermuda into green up with fert.
The Grass Factor thank you much! I just thought I may get lucky and not have to dethatch it like last year and overseed, but I enjoyed it and in hindsight would've done a few things differently anyways. So, good to know!
I have an organic vegetable and flower garden. About 2 years ago, I started seeing nutsedge. Not knowing any better I pulled the plants up and they came back 10 fold. Now, I have it everywhere in the very large garden. Knock on wood, it has not moved into the St Augustine the surrounds the perimeter of the garden. Are any of these product safe for replanting my veggies? The rest of my flowering plants are for hummingbirds, bees, butterflys. Will these products wind up hurting any of these creatures?
Bro i made the dirt for my house. 30 yards and i have nutsedge everywhere. A months work. I sprayed half of my lawn with tenacity and it killed it on emergence but the other half , not good.
Very informative, but I have a question: Using halosulfuron, you say it has *some* effect on the nutlets. Does it weaken the nutlets enough that repeat applications will ultimately kill them?
Thanks Matt... I have a bad issue with nutgrass in my flowerbeds. Have been using Ortho Nutsedge killer, it has knocked it out better in the lawn. I am in Texas and have been hitting it every couple of weeks. It turns brown but seems to come back. My flowerbeds are mostly shrubs with a weed guard and 1 - 2 in rock on top. It comes right through it all. I have dug some up so it is not on top of the weed guard (although some grows there too). Help
Half of my backyard is Nutsedge. And I mean you can only see nutsedge, no grass, Thats how much my yard is covered in the stuff. What should I do to get rid of it besides concreating it?
2 Questions. Do you still have turf damage concerns going the pre emerge route with sulfentrazone at the 4oz/ac applications. The other question, if doing a blanket spray with an infested yard, if you suggest the combo of dismiss and sedgehammer, what rates would you suggest with your experience. Trying to establish a program here in IA. Thanks! Jeff K
@@jeffkelderman8737 at 4oz/acre you're likely to still see damage, because it's particularly tough on young, fleshy vegetation - like in the spring. If running the dual combo, full rate of sedgehammer, 4oz/A sulfen
I have a crazy grass amongst my fescue. Can’t seem to identify it or kill it unless I use something like roundup. Can you help? Maybe I can send you a picture?
Great info, I work at trugreen and I hate nutsedge so much. It's all over the place in Michigan this year and I feel like half my shift is spent spraying this nutsedge bullshit
Thank you for this information. I have tried two products now and nothing. I will be trying the sledgehammer next. I'm new Texas so this sedgegrass is new to me. Its a learning curve.
Love your video. I have an all organic yard and huge vegetable, flower garden. This year I had just cleared the vegetable garden when I got sick. two months later it was covered in nutsedge. I'm at a loss as to how to kill it without damaging worms, good insects, etc. Can you help?
I have several questions regarding killing nutsedge and Bermuda grass and crabgrass after an artificial turf installation. Also advice on killing these things prior to an installation
I HAVE BEEN USING SEDGEHAMMER AND IT HAS BEEN WORKING GOOD ON THE SEDGE GRASS EXCEpt for the green kylinga should I mix the sedgehammer with dismiss. If so what would the ratio be I am only spot spraying and I want to get the kylinga under control. Since I want to fall seed would it be better to seed now and combat the kylinga in the spring? or should I do it now and when can I seed?
Thanks for the video. I do have a question about applying Sledge Hammer 🔨 on newly seeded lawns. I seeded Zenith Zoysia and it's about 5 weeks old right now with a bunch of yellow nut Sledge growing around it. I keep cutting it back like every 3 days. Would it be safe to use Sledge Hammer 🔨 on this new Zoysia?
In clay soil, I laid down Zoysia sod, South TX, back in May/June. Its now Sept 10th, 90+ degress daily. And we're in a drout - we're always in a drout! Ha. Hence, my choice of Zoysia; I think It's Empire? Before sodding, I stripped off the top layer of ground to remove as much of weeds as possible. In one corner, of the 1,700sq ft front yard, I see maybe 15 yellow sedge weeds poking up thru the Zoysia. What would you rec I do? Leave them? Hoping the Zoysia will choke them out? Is it safe to try to spot treat them when they are growing right through the center of the new sod? Should I try to put down pre emergent for next year in the area where I now see the yellow sedge, or do I risk harming the new roots of this Zoysia ? Help guide my inexperience please...
Just saw your old video about nutsedge killing. Googled Monument killer and hard to find. Do you still recommend it? From your discussion that is what I should use
Did anyone ever answer this question? Nutsedge has inundated my perennial and ornamental beds. What should I use to kill it without damaging my perennials and ornamentals?
we spray dismiss for nutsedge and I do the middle rate that they recommend per gallon, yet i always seem to be spraying at the same properties every year. not sure what to do
I’m having some trouble with quack grass, I live in the cool season with predominantly KB and fescue mix. Will sedge hammer work? Or should I go with certainty. I was also looking at tenacity, I’ve heard mixed reviews.
Great videos! How would this kind of treatment apply to Hawaii where it's pretty much warm all year? We have terrible problems with sedge and kyllinga.
The Sedgehammer label says that the product must be used the same day it is mixed. I have read the Dismiss label and there is nothing mentioned about this limitation. Do you know if Dismiss can be left in the tank for an extended period say days at a time with no degradation to the product, and will it effect my equipment?
I hope you are still reading this. Thank you for the info BUT I have a nut sedge problem in my rose garden. No grass there. It has weed fabric (big mistake on our part) and the nut sedge grows up through it. Of course the nutlets stay behind so pulling isn't an option even if my back would allow it. Can you recommend and product and process to help me eradicate this from between my roses? I'd be ever so appreciative! I live in Texas
Hello, I just found your channel and did subscribe. Great info, could you please answer one question? I live in middle Georgia, and have 2 acres of mostly St. Augustine , and Bermuda. It is March 3, still cool, but nut sedge is coming on strong. What would you recommend and where can I purchase the product? Thank you
How does the monument spray out of the Permagreen, we’re running that machine and love it and looking at going to monument for nutsedge on our Bermuda yards.
OK, I have a question. I have a 3/4 acre lot with a mix of Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine. I live near Austin, Texas and it's almost August, with temps near 100 degrees. What would you suggest I use to eliminate the Nutsedge? Thanks.
On several different videos I have heard it said that to only use Sedgehammer on "established" lawns. However, I have not been able to get a definitive answer on what "established" means. My lawn was seeded with perennial rye in June, but I have nutsedge popping up all over my lawn now. Any idea how long I should wait before I try to use Sedgehammer?
Dismiss is definitely a "hot" running product. Ran it on some zoysia last summer and it burned the blade tips. And also have a question regarding kyllinga..I have only got good results with certainty, but haven't tried monument or katana yet. Are you seeing similar results with those on kyllinga?
Thanks for this video. I used ortho nutsedge on a lawn that has St. Augustine and it appears to have killed it. I am hoping it comes back but am thinking of just replanting new grass. I sent you an email with a pic - thanks for your videos. What would you do if you were me?
+Gino20202 no, blindside is a mix of a lower rate of sulfentrazone (dismiss) and metsulfuron methyl (Manor). Metsulfuron methyl has no activity on sedges. So the sedge control from blindside is a "weaker" control than you'd get from just dismiss
I'm going to try Dismiss on the nutsedge I have in my yard that I can't seem to get rid of. This video was very informative - going far beyond the videos that just show someone spraying it. Thanks for making it.
Hello, I am a solo operator near Memphis. I stopped using dismiss due to it stunting the bermuda. When the grass is growing like crazy and your trying to get it so green its blue, ya you know what Im talking about, the dismiss left shorter lighter colors where it was spot treated. its terrible. I mix sedgehammer in my z-sprayer and hit while Im fertilizing. Zero knock back! Thats why I switched. Great channel man. I will sub!
ScenicRouteTravelers365 I'm a Memphis native - small world. i worked for fairway lawns for a good bit. on bermuda, I always used Monument. I miss bermudagrass!

Sadly, I made the mistake of trying to dig them out. I applied Sedgehammer today.
Thank you for addressing the infestation issue. That’s what I have.
I have nutsedge everywhere in my backyard....grass, garden beds, and my veggie garden. What can I do to get rid of it?
Bro i made the dirt for my house. 30 yards and i have nutsedge everywhere. A months work. I sprayed half of my lawn with tenacity and it killed it on emergence but the other half , not good.
Teasing us with that “Tenacity?” LOL
Wow! As a horticulturist I am totally impressed by a very professional presentation. Thanks!
@@TheGrassFactor any experience with a product called Arkon herbicide from Pbi? My rep is really pushing me to try
@@jeffkelderman8737 it is the liquid version of vexis and theoretically should be a very good product
One area of my zoysia yard is being overtaken by centipede. What would you recommend to eliminate the centipede without harming the zoysia?
Hey great video, I have a new zoysia matrella sod about 3 weeks old and it has nutsedge popping up, what do you recommend I do to control it?
+Susan Loewen either of these products will have minimal effects on beneficials. Sedgehammer has the least soil persistence.
Thanks, I'll try on a section of the garden.
I have several questions regarding killing nutsedge and Bermuda grass and crabgrass after an artificial turf installation. Also advice on killing these things prior to an installation
Imazapyr
great viedo it's realy informative I realy did not know the about applications and the correct product for the particular season.
Yessir
What product would best kill sedges in the mulched ornamental setting where damage to host grasses are not a concern?
Did anyone ever answer this question? Nutsedge has inundated my perennial and ornamental beds. What should I use to kill it without damaging my perennials and ornamentals?
I would also like know the answer as I have nutsedge growing in the pine straw around my azaleas.
Please help. I have mint in my backyard. It pretty much is my backyard. Grows under the lawn too. Any ideas, what would you do?
Thanks so much.
Triclopyr
Could you give us what it looks like on a lawn
we spray dismiss for nutsedge and I do the middle rate that they recommend per gallon, yet i always seem to be spraying at the same properties every year. not sure what to do
I’m having some trouble with quack grass, I live in the cool season with predominantly KB and fescue mix. Will sedge hammer work? Or should I go with certainty. I was also looking at tenacity, I’ve heard mixed reviews.
Great videos! How would this kind of treatment apply to Hawaii where it's pretty much warm all year? We have terrible problems with sedge and kyllinga.
Hi Matt,
Thanks for responding! The grass type is el toro zoysia.
Matt. How much time between the 3 applications of Dismiss? Thanks again!
Great video, very informative. Thank you.
great deal of good information. Thanks
The Sedgehammer label says that the product must be used the same day it is mixed. I have read the Dismiss label and there is nothing mentioned about this limitation. Do you know if Dismiss can be left in the tank for an extended period say days at a time with no degradation to the product, and will it effect my equipment?
Can regular consumers buy the 3rd option chemical for Bermuda grass? If yes, can you recommend website? Great info thanks.
Cover your roses, apply halosulfuron or Celero
Wonderful presentation thanks
Hello, I just found your channel and did subscribe. Great info, could you please answer one question?
I live in middle Georgia, and have 2 acres of mostly St. Augustine , and Bermuda. It is March 3, still cool, but nut sedge is coming on strong. What would you recommend and where can I purchase the product?
Thank you
I will try echelon, it has dismiss in it and it's a pre-emergent
What would you use on a Bermuda lawn that’s what I have
can this be used around roses, it is taking over everything?
How does the monument spray out of the Permagreen, we’re running that machine and love it and looking at going to monument for nutsedge on our Bermuda yards.
epeach2011 does great!
monument herbicide any smaller sz’s aval? My lawn is like 500 sq ft
OK, I have a question. I have a 3/4 acre lot with a mix of Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine. I live near Austin, Texas and it's almost August, with temps near 100 degrees. What would you suggest I use to eliminate the Nutsedge? Thanks.
Sedgehammer, certainty,Celero, or dismiss
@@TheGrassFactor Thanks!
How do you feel about Mansion as a post emergent? Is there something that will work more quickly? I use Mansion on my broadleaf weeds. Please advise.
ruclips.net/video/RcA9cqWdtKI/видео.html
Did a whole presentation on it
If you to apply sulfentrazone 3 ounces(4 times) instead of the full 12 ounces do you still get the pre-emergent control?
On several different videos I have heard it said that to only use Sedgehammer on "established" lawns. However, I have not been able to get a definitive answer on what "established" means. My lawn was seeded with perennial rye in June, but I have nutsedge popping up all over my lawn now. Any idea how long I should wait before I try to use Sedgehammer?
As a general rule of thumb, if you've cut twice, it's established. I would spray and not think twice about it
Dismiss is definitely a "hot" running product. Ran it on some zoysia last summer and it burned the blade tips. And also have a question regarding kyllinga..I have only got good results with certainty, but haven't tried monument or katana yet. Are you seeing similar results with those on kyllinga?
Kyle Whatley monument is what I use for kylinga on warm season. it works so so well.
How does Sedgehammer compare to Image for nutgrass infestation of buffalo grass in the summer in Central Texas?
Similar efficacy, but way less collateraldamage with sedge hammer
Thanks for this video. I used ortho nutsedge on a lawn that has St. Augustine and it appears to have killed it. I am hoping it comes back but am thinking of just replanting new grass. I sent you an email with a pic - thanks for your videos. What would you do if you were me?
Micah Leddy It seems to be killing mine too. What did you do for/with it?
Isn't Blindside better at controlling and suppressing sedges than all these products you mentioned?
+Gino20202 no, blindside is a mix of a lower rate of sulfentrazone (dismiss) and metsulfuron methyl (Manor). Metsulfuron methyl has no activity on sedges. So the sedge control from blindside is a "weaker" control than you'd get from just dismiss
I'm going to try Dismiss on the nutsedge I have in my yard that I can't seem to get rid of. This video was very informative - going far beyond the videos that just show someone spraying it. Thanks for making it.
Thank you for this...I'm swamped!
I have Zephyranthes Candida can I use those products on it?
What about Tenacity in Fescue grasses? I saw your draw board had Tenacity but you did not talk about it.
Curious as well.
