Great review. I agree, Irish writers can be funny and the exploration of loneliness sounds interesting too. It can be complex and not always what we assume it to be. I'm enjoying your prize videos. Thanks!

I really liked the Dev character, and for a while, I enjoyed reading this novel, but you articulate exactly what I was thinking with your last point. I haven't read his short stories, but this book feels like it's caught between being a short story and a novel, and kind of undecided. I think the basic, somewhat pedestrian plot as the overall frame is a symptom, but also the way he riffs on the theme of loneliness sometimes feels more like it wants to be a short story. So, a book I partially enjoyed, but to me, not a really successful one that I would have put on the longlist.

You nailed it! Pedestrian in the perfect word to describe the plot!!!! I was really glad it didn’t make the shortlist but I’m surprised at how the list turned out in the end. I’m already hoping that next year’s Booker is better than this one.

Hi Gretchen I have read this one and thought it was ok. I am struggling a bit with the Booker this year. I have read Headshot, Orbital and this one so far. I have read There There which I did enjoy so will probably read Wandering Stars. I have a few on reserve at the library but lots are in front of me. I do think Creation Lake could be a good book so will probably get this one if it is shortlisted.

Sorry I’m late with a comment. Yeah it’s definitely not like a typical Booker prize season for me either. I don’t fully gel with the judges tastes and question how some of these books can be considered Booker worthy. I started Creation Lake on audio and couldn’t handle Kushner’s narration and only made it about 1/3 way through. However, so many have told me that it picks up right after that mark so I will be giving it another go soon. 🤞🏻

I thought this was just okay, it felt like there was no real resolution to it. I'm currently on book number 11. Most of the books are not wowing me and I'm struggling to put together enough for a shortlist.

This really has been a lackluster year for the Booker. I was really shocked by the shortlist. Held was practically unreadable to me and My Friends got snubbed in my opinion.
