  • In this video i'll be starting the build for the new, as of yet unreleased model kit of the Volks Plastic kit, Knight of Gold K.O.G. from Five Star Stories!
    Disclaimer: This is a pre-release sample kit that I officially received from VOLKS Inc. for review purposes, in order to promote the kit to FSS and mecha fans worldwide.
    This will be step 1, the head unit. I'll try to make future videos shorter, but I wanted to show some of the tools and techniques i'd be using in this one.
    Hope you enjoy and if you like the video and want to see the rest of it getting built, please SUBSCRIBE for future parts of this build.
    For the modeling supplies and paints i'm using in this video, I bought them from the sites below:

    currently putting together the special edition of this kit that comes with the cannon. my partner and I picked it up from the volks shop in akihabara on our honeymoon a few weeks ago. it feels more like a garage kit than a commercial product with all the qc issues but I'm having a blast!

      Awesome! I'm glad my videos are helpful. You can get the kit from volksusa.com if you're in the US, if you're somewhere else in the world, their Japanese site sells it as well and will ship to most places. There are also independent shops that stock it too. Good luck!

    I am taking notes on how you are painting this. I think I might bite the bullet and get some lacquer based paints. Great work.

      Thanks. With lacquers you need good ventilation, but they're pretty easy to work with IMO and are much tougher than acrylics.

    Watched your videos over this build and decided to build my own.. question Where in the world did you find the Gaia paints? Out of stock everywhere....

    • @bhop.builds
      @bhop.builds  3 года назад

      First of all, thanks for watching. Second, yeah, if you're in the U.S. it can be difficult to find Gaia in stock. Especially Star Bright Gold if that's what you're talking about. I had some generous friends that had some in their stash help me out on that when I made mine. My go-to shops for gaia are:
      VolksUSA - volksusastore.com/webstores/hobby/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=1023
      Burbank House of Hobbies - houseofhobbies.com/collections/paint?_=pf&pf_v_brand=Gaia
      and
      Galactic Toys - galactictoys.com/collections/gaia-paints
      Galactic Toys probably has the best selection, but I think they're currently out of Star Bright Gold as well.. Luckily there are many other quality golds if you're not super picky about following the manual. Gaia EX Gold look really good, plus it comes in a larger bottle. It doesn't have the same metallic flakes as Star Bright, but still nice. There are a few other options as well. Hopefully you can find something you like.

      @@bhop.builds Thanks ! Perl Gold & Perl Copper seems to be available... I have some other options. I may try Mr Metal Color MC217 Gold or Mr Color 202 with tint ... I was looking at this paint called modo pro gold similar to Gaia 122. To tint over 202 or base yellow and tint over Mr color GX11 . Don't know if it will look as nice as yours. I guess I will have to experiment and paint abunch of spoons to find what I like.

    Will this still looks good even if there's no paint applied and just snap build?

    • @bhop.builds
      @bhop.builds  Год назад

      It's not really snap buildable. Cement is required for most parts. I've seen a couple unpainted builds and IMO it doesn't look that great. The plastic color is more of a brownish tan color than gold. I don't have photos of this one from the full test fit since I built it in sections, but when I built the Buster Cannon version last year I took some test fit pics and shared to my instagram. The plastic color is a little different, but it should give you an idea of what it'll look like without paint.

      @@Darkzero497 To be honest, I don’t remember. It’s been a couple years now, however, I’d recommend using Mr Color Super Metallic 2, Super Copper (SM209) It wasn’t available when I made this video, but it’s very similar straight from the jar to the color I used here.

    Im a total noob with painting and I have a couple of questions.
    Do you thin them? You also use two kinds of thinner. What's the difference?
    Manual says (i assume) to mix the paints to get desired color. Golden color for example is made up of gaia 122, ex-07 and 041. Havent seen you do this in your video, so.. did you do this?
    Thanks for your videos man, ive been using them as a guide for my FSS kit.

    • @bhop.builds
      @bhop.builds  Год назад

      Hi, yeah, I didn't film it since thinning is so common, but I thin all the gaianotes paints with a ratio of roughly 1:2 *paint to thinner. (for Mr Color paints I prefer a 1:1.5 ratio. The thinner with the grey cap is for regular paint and the gold cap is for metallics. The grey capped one has an added retarder to help paints level out to a smoother finish. (Mr Color equivalent would be Mr Leveling Thinner) The gold capped metallic master thinner dries a little faster to help keep the metallic flakes in the paint from moving around while it dries, which can affect the color tones. (Mr Color's equivalent is Mr Rapid Thinner).
      As far as mixing, yes, I did that as well. I use medicine mixing cups with markings on the side to figure out the ratios. You can also use disposable droppers to measure your ratios, again, I didn't film that part, but I did do it. Since the model in this video was the first version of the KOG that i'd built as a commission for Volks, I wanted to stick to the manual. If you're not concerned about matching the box art 100% then you can just eyeball it to where it looks good to you. Many people use a gold color that they like straight out of the jar as well, which is much easier since you don't have to mix, but you just need to find a gold that you like. That's what I did for the Buster KOG version that I built since the paints that were recommended for that version were unavailable in the US.
      Hope that helps, and i'm glad you're finding my videos useful!

    are seam lines and areas where you cut them from the gates well hidden?

    • @bhop.builds
      @bhop.builds  4 года назад +1

      Mostly. So far there have been a few parts where seams needed to be filled, but for the most part the pieces seem to be engineered to hide them. Not quite to the level of the newer gunpla kits, but a step up from the other FSS plastic kits I've built. (Looking at you Schperter KOG shoulders)
      edit: I missed the part about the area where you cut them, My comment above was about the seams. The nub/cut areas aren't really hidden so you'll have to do sanding to smooth those out mostly.
