    Technically, Vernon's terrestial TV debut was on Channel 4's Big Breakfast, in the "search for a model" competition. A couple of years after that, his presenting/personality potential got aired on Channel 5's "The Mag" when he larked around with Josie D'arby doing Mick Jagger impressions - which she then quipped as "one for the showreel, Vernon". I guess he got this gig very soon after! Incidentally, "The Mag" was also where Konnie Huq got her break.

    IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME BACK THEN

    I remember this show well, I watched this first one then I became an SMTV viewer and I don't think I ever switched back to CBBC after that.

    I don't think I've ever grown out of cheesy Saturday morning TV, I still watch TMi! ;-)

      Try Saturday Mash Up Live if you haven't already. Series 6 in full swing and there's lots of things that will be familiar.

    Yes, and FBi being live and back on Saturday mornings was entirely a response to SM:TV being such a success - the old system of a load of repeats with CBBC links on Saturday mornings not being an option anymore (plus Kirsten and Otis had left by this point and the links were built around them)

      @JB1601 The only people who watched Smtv were stupid people when they know full well that Smtv was a crap show, it was supposed to be a Saturday morning, "children's" show not a adults show, ITV did a terrible job at running a Saturday morning children's programme and it didn't improve until Ant and Dec finally got removed at the end of 2001, and besides FBI and Live & Kicking were way better than Smtv which was rubbish and awful, and that's not an opinion, it's a fact

    I just about remember this, but I'd sort of grown out of cheesy Saturday morning telly by this point.

    Katie Heavoner. Gorgeous girl, had quite a crush on her back then in my late teens. Now she does the middle of the night gaming shows on channel 5 poor thing :[

    Although I could see why people liked it I never really "got" SMTV in the way that I "got" Dick and Dom later on, so I continued watch the car crash on the other side in the dark years of 99-02! This is essentially the first new show on Saturday mornings since 1995 and it's dire - look at the bit where the menu flies off early and they don't know what to do, and then when Vernon announces Style File and the other two slink off awkwardly...

    @JB1601 That Style File bit made be laugh actually, it just looks so unprofessional. I don't recall the early SM:TVs being much better though- it was probably only the 12 month contract and CBBC not bothering over the summer which saved it to be honest.

    He joined T4 the year after this, although he was already on UK Play's "The Phone Zone" at this point.

      I'll have you know that Vernon Kay is more watchable than the unwatchable, unfunny and crap Ant and Dec, which puts you in the minority.

    It was the show that killed Live and Kicking because it lost the BBC so many viewers who didn't return!

    • @meridian2000
      @meridian2000 Год назад

      @Neil Ogden Firstly it wasn't the show that killed Live & Kicking, secondly it didn't lose viewers, and thirdly Smtv only lasted 5 minutes before being axed in 2003, because it was so crap and unwatchable.

      @Neil Ogden again YOU ARE WRONG, most viewers stayed with the BBC AND most of the viewers so watched ITV were adults who watched SMTV when it was supposed to be a Saturday morning, children's only show, it was supposed to be concentrating on its target audience, thank goodness ant and dec finally got removed in 2001 smtv only last 5 minutes because it was the worst show ever, why stupid people watched it I do not know.

    Oh dear, Fully Booked. Ran for, apparently, six seasons over five years and worked for none of them. Well, maybe that's a bit harsh. I've liked many a show which didn't necessarily take off, and I'm sure Fully Booked appealed to a great many. But, for me, it started of as a Big Breakfast wannabe, then ended up as a rather pathetic SM:tv wannabe which didn't stand a chance. I mean, that's no Ant, Dec and Cat they drafted in there.

    But with SM:TV on the other side at its absoute peak at this point, I doubt anybody bothered watching this! I remember peeking in and cringing a couple of times (changing channels when the hideous Pokemon was in the other side), but that was it.
