Steve...your in-home video’s with audiophiles / music lovers are the best!! More, more more!! Really enjoyed meeting Meyy and hearing his thoughts / seeing his system. Great stuff!! The one thing I do not get is the love of vinyl, only because there are very very few whole LP’s or sides of LP’s that I enjoy in their entirety. In this respect, digital rules as I have become a singles / cherry picked playlist lover. What really amazed me is having all this great kit in a 400 square foot NYC apartment, with his bed 5 feet from his bed. Being in a high rise apartment, I doubt he is ever able to listen at “slightly” high volumes to bring out the best in the music and his system. He has people on all sides of him except for the window side. All for the honor of living in NYC. It’s a world unto its own. I did it for a few years in the 70’s and that was enough for me. Just different strokes. I loved Meyy’s enthusiasm. Obviously, he’s well paid at the hospital. If he is not a doc, of some sort, I would be shocked. Real nice guy with audiophile neighbors to boot. How fun is that?
One thing I really agreed with, Jazz is 10x better on a good system! I listen in my car, but don't have near the enjoyment that I have on my home stereo.
Totally agree. I just picked up a huge record collection this past week that included a bunch of Coltrane records, and they sound better than I’ve ever heard em sound in my car via my ancient iPod.
Sorry but in my modest view it is simply impossible to maintain that Jazz is 10x better on a good System.Any form of Music cannot be 10x better on a good System. There is good Music and not so good Music!
Alexander van Eijken I think the “10X better” thing was just a bit an exaggeration. Of course, there’s no way of measuring how much “better” music sounds on any system, as it all comes down to personal taste.
What a great vid, Steve. Love it when you show us other’s systems, and that system looks awesome. Meyy is certainly in deep already, and he’s at the beginning of his journey?! My journey didn’t start even close to that! Thanks for taking us along, once again, Steve! Much appreciated. 🎶🔊🙂
About a month ago, I purchased a vinyl record from Carlos Gardel (tango) pressed in the 1970's but recorded in 1930's and the guitars along with his vocals sounded like if he was there in my living room. A definite time travel moment for me. If your speakers allows you to time travel as well. Let me know. Loving the interviews Steve!!!
Yes, I went from 2-channel to HT and back to 2-channel myself as well. I totally understand where this guy is coming from. I went from receivers to true high-end AVRs trying to have my bread buttered on both sides (good music listening and good surround HT in one unit). Guess what? That doesn't exist folks. About 2 years ago I was finally fed up with the PITA of HT and trying to listen to music as well. In fact, I was 85% music and 15% HT in my tastes. I was tired of dealing with subs and such, not to mention poor processing even on high-end AVRs. (Some lower-priced AVRs were blowing away my top-shelf AVRs)! I must mention though, that when i was doing the HT thing, HSU was my sub of choice. I had visited their facility several times and their stuff is fantastic. In my opinion, they make some of the best subs around, out-performing subs 10 times their price. Anyway, moving into an apartment was also part of the reason to leave HT behind. I tried it first without a sub as my towers go low, but it just wasn't working. I decided since I am far more music than HT I needed to choose which side of the bread I wanted to butter, so I went with 2-channel. After saving for years I slowly built what is now my final system. (In very few thing is the grass greener on the other side and audio is one of those grass is not greener things). With my final system I have I put on a couple of movies and discovered, that even for that, 2-channel works and works well. I don't miss HT at all. I have found that for all the PITA of HT, it is not worth it. It really doesn't bring much to the party in my opinion. I find all I need is a good display (TV), which these days you would be hard-pressed to find anything less than 50 inches, so that part of the HT remains (why not)?
Eric Eliott - excellent points, and totally agree. Though I do find the act of tinkering that comes with HT is kinda fun too, it's like shopping for something you really want - sometimes its the buying process that's more fun than actually getting the damn thing whatever that is, if you get my point. But yes a nice simple 2 channel setup is great and leaves time to actually listen to the source rather than going "ooh are my rear channels working, clear" every 5mins etc etc.
Thanks Meyy for inviting us into your home and showing your HiFi rig. Von Gaylord seems to be one of those companies that just operate low key and quietly. Meyy relating his one on one relationship with Von Gaylord helps explain that.
Wow, nice system Meyy. I like your commitment to one bespoke/none-mainstream manufacturer. I have found that you get better service and synergy with the components by doing so. It’s also nice to develop a relationship and friendship with the designer and manufacturer of your system. Thanks for wonderful and entertaining videos Steve.
I know that playing a stereo system in any RUclips reviewers video is usually shunned, for obvious reasons. But, I think listening to Steve's immediate reactions to what he's hearing would make for an interesting viewing and listening experience, at least one in a while.
Rich Ross, I agree. I’d love to see Steve’s reaction while he’s listening to a great system. He’s great at describing what he’s heard after the fact, but it would be fun to see it in real time, even if what we’re hearing through RUclips is not even close to the same thing.
Newer LPs are taped, mixed and mastered digitally. So if you enjoy older music, it is amazing. Do a blind test with Tidal and the LP with a recently released LP. Impressive system, LOVE IT!

Great interview Steve & a really likeable fellow. Nice to see younger guys keeping the hobby alive. I'm sure it sounds great & looks like he went all in in the right way.
I used to have the "vinyl for the albums I love" philosophy when I first started getting into records. I quickly realized it's not that simple. Sometimes the digital version really does sound better. Now I try to get the original releases. So, if it was originally recorded to analog tape I try to get the record and if it was recorded in the digital domain I usually stick with the CD.
@@ryosukesegami That has been the case in the past with some high profile albums (e.g. Stadium Arcadium) but a lot of them are simply not better (e.g. Daft Punk's Random Access Memories). Meyy's experience with Jazz is the same as mine. It was only when I heard Jazz on a good system that I came to appreciate it. Great video - thanks Steve and Meyy.
Great system! I have to remember that unlike outside the city’s , people don’t have 1500 dollar a month truck or car notes. You can take that wasted cash and get a great system:)
40-50K of amazing equipment... in a 400sqft apartment. Meyy, may I suggest moving across the river to a 700sqft apartment, so that you can light-up those beautiful speakers from time to time.
Skip the CHORD and get a dCS if you want a higher performance DAC. I've been saying variable output from DAC is not good, you need a preamp. I don't understand why people think tube amplifier getting hot is a concern. There has never been a house fire caused by a tube amp.
I could be wrong, but I took it as the concern isn't necessarily safety, it's HVAC and the appliance heat load. The amount of heat that must be removed from the space. I believe he said 420 sq ft., which would magnify the relative importance of each item.
Yes considering my apartment is tiny, and I don't run my AC while listening to music, I was afraid 2 hot little space heaters would make me sweat like crazy
You can tell by the surrounds on those woofers that they put out a sound that belies their size. If you put those speakers on short stands near the floor and tilted 'em back to maintain Soundstage height, it would be like having subwoofers.

Plenty to be excited about, such as (from manufacturer's page) " Von Gaylord Audio are one of the very few companies that will provide the complete audio setup including speakers, cables and interconnects."
Excellent and very very interesting content. Just curious what kind of investments are needed to get something comparable to what Meyy has... I assume north of $50K ? When a website does not list MSRP prices, I wonder..... Thrilled that he has such a fantastic looking (and presumably, sounding) system....
I like how he nonchalantly says he's "he's new to this and just wanted to try it out". Many of us probably couldn't afford what he's spent to assemble his system in single one shot purchase. There's nothing normal about this but given the small size of his apartment it's obvious where his priorities lie. If I had such flexibility if I moved I'd likely do the same. The cost of housing and cost of living from where he came in Canada was far less than living in NY. Interesting that he chose to spend so much on the Chord Dave DAC which costs more than his VPI turntable and Lehman phono preamp combined, too bad he didn't say what cartridge was mounted on the tonearm. When I last spoke a Chord rep he indicated that the Dave sounds even better with the Chord Blue Mk II CD which has upsampling. I auditioned the Chord TT2 with the Chord Hugo M Scaler which is an outboard upsampler. It sounded good but I found it wasn't necessarily a panacea for poorly mastered CDs. One of the criticisms I have with CDs is the inability to fully separate and resolve denser recordings. With simple arrangements where there are only a few instruments and vocals CDs can sound great but when the recordings get more complicated I find them a bit lacking especially compared to vinyl.
@Meyy Arunachalam Thanks for clarifying your purchase. I'm in Toronto although I have friends and family in Edmonton so I have been there many times. Have fun with your purchase especially playing around with the digital signal path. Not sure if you have a USB regen between you computer and the Dave but that's something worth looking into. You may also find that a dedicated streamer will sound better than playing music from your PC especially since you have a very transparent DAC.
@@TorToroPorco I am looking to educate myself more on the USB regen area. I have a dedicated network streamer (SOtM neo ultra special edition). My Computer is not directly connected to my DAC. Will I still benefit from a USB regen and reclocker? If I decide to get something like "Innuos Phoenix reclocker" should I eliminate the SOtM and connect my Computer (Intel NUC) to the reclocker and then to the DAC? Any advice on this is appreciated.
@@mrpositronia I actually got the Audiolab 8300 when I had the Von Gaylord DAC (before the Dave). Ray is a minimalist and the only input on his DAC was one SPDIF. So inorder to route my TV's optical input to the DAC, I had to rely on the Audiolab's inputs.
@@MrPerfusionist Thanks for the reply. I am impressed if you are considering the price differential between this and the rest of your set up. Enjoy the music....
@@MrPerfusionist I loved the video and your enthusiasm. I live in Toronto myself. I love am a sucker for jazz (on vinyl) and female vocals as well. Are you on Instagram? I would like to connect with you. I am interested to know how you selected a non-commercial amp/preamp considering there are like a million options. I too have slightly lesser known speakers (which I love) and hence I was wondering...I would love to share my setup as well with you..

Such a pleasure to see a.) acoustic treatments b.) speakers pulled way out c.) Von Gaylord !? (never heard of them) Did he mention how he discovered the Von Gaylord brand? edit; the mattress makes for a great bass trap!
Von Gaylord has been around for over 20 years. Their original name was Legend Audio so you may often find some of their gear on the secondhand market labeled as such. They do some shows and get some reviews out from time to time, all glowing, but I think their business model is mostly word of mouth. It tells you something about the product when a company can last that long in this industry operating in such a manner. I was introduced to the brand through a coworker, bought a pair of Chinchilla ICs on Audiogon, and was instantly hooked on the sound. Very seductive, open, and airy. Their cables in particular are exceptional, IMO.
I would make one more move if I were you...REL sub hooked up the neutrik cable...then you will have closest to full range sound. It will fill in the gaps.
Yes! Surround sound 5.1 is so overrated. But 2.1 audio is much better than 2.0 audio - just critical that you get bass management right. At least 2 powered subs in non mirrored locations, and (Audyssey) DSP to delay the mains so allowing the slower subs to keep up with the always faster responding main loudspeakers. Critical! Power, depth and punch. You cannot get it without this sort of bi-amping.
How something sounds is just a preference. Vinyl has a warmer tone as there is usually a bass boost and quicker roll off to ensure rumble does not affect the stylus in the groove. So vinyl is too much work, but I love the sound! So? I simply EQ my digital to sound a little more laid back - and I've given up on my vinyl reincarnation addiction!
I am glad you said thatAbout the preamp in your system presentation. I agree with you. After all these years of collecting audio equipment, I find that the preamp is central. I used to think it was the amp or source or speakers. I also find that good clean unrestricted power of a foundation
@@techrider2088 Yes I totally believe clean unrestricted power is a key to good bass and bass extension. I changed my outlet to a Furutech GTX-D Rhodium plated outlet. My Von Gaylord live performance (its not exactly a power conditioner, but Ray's version of cleaning up power) is connected to the main outlet. The "Live performance" has 8 outlets and all my devices are connected to it. My power cords for all the devices are also Ray's upgraded power cords and they make a big difference.
Yes. That’s good to hear. What worked best for me were big isolation transformers. Maybe next try cabinet damping by mass loading and vibration isolation?
Meyy, if you want to relax with organic digital sound, check out products from Signalyst (upsampling software) and Sonore (endpoint hardware, alternative to SotM). I have these, plus the EtherRegen box from UpTone Audio, and my sound is super organic. Speakers are very unforgiving (Focal) so I could not listen to digital any other way.
@@MrPerfusionist - I think it's the HQPlayer software that makes the biggest contribution towards the taming of digital. It implements complex filters & modulators on powerful commodity hardware rather than leaving it to more limited processors found within DACs. The DAVE is most likely the exception to this generalisation. That said, many folks upsample to DSD512 then stream this into a variety of exotic DACs. Food for thought maybe?
really enjoyed the video & the Meyy has the right idea about buying music .. try it 1st on streaming .. if you really really like it .. buy it on vinyl..
Hey Steve, how about a follow-up when he gets the Chord M-Scaler and Hugo TT? Considering that as well... Maybe he can lend you the gear for your take....
I did. But the issue is, my preamp is not balanced and only has unbalanced connections. You can use the Aegir in monoblock configuration only through balanced connections.
Gary Lawrence that’s some serious money for a little studio apartment 😳 I am sure he could probably gotten a bigger apartment if it weren’t for his hobby😜
Many thanks Steve. Interesting how these speakers look similar, including the concrete like texture of the box, to the first speakers ever built in 1980 by the French company Triangle. These speakers are named The Triangle 1180 and were the first high-end model to be marketed by Triangle. See herewith the info link: www.trianglehifi.com/en/history/.
Very nice system..........., as well as a very nice guy all around. And by the way, do find a nice source for any used LPS directly from Japan. Japanese pressings along with ones pressed in Germany, are worth the pursuit.
Mevy's a Canadian badass! Is that possible, lol? Nice gear, definitely a class above mine! But then again, that goes without saying because this is brought to you by the audiophiliac! Steve the golden ear? Guttenberg! Happy listening. Oh, yes, 400 sq. ft. is tight but it's New York. And gone are the glory days when you could rent a three bedroom apartment on the upper westside for $300-$400 (RENT CONTROLLED, boys and girls). God, I don't know what we would have done as students if that was not the case. And while we were there, the creepy crawling hand of GENTRYFICATION F-D everything up. Mom and Pop shops closed, revival movie houses shuttered. Great used book and music stores GONE! Homelessness tripling and quadrupling under the "great communicator" who, toward the end couldn't even communicate with himself. Reagan, those were DARK days indeed! And then there was that giant BS-er, The Donald, lol! TRUMP Taj Mahal anyone! I was there, lol. Horrendous architecture and cheap workmanship and taste! Fortunately, it's GONE! Phenomenal business acumen. Alas America!
Curious about the digital/analog A/B testing mentioned - how much did the results have to do with the mastering? Do engineers master CD’s and LP’s differently?
Yes it certainly does. But my friend chose analog purely based on "how he enjoyed the music". Infact digital was more transparent and pure, but analog was more lush sounding and mesmerizing and enjoyable - according to him
Does anyone know of a site that gives details of how albums were mastered? Sometimes it’s hard to find whether they sourced digitally or analog. Thanks.
kc Jones This is when you enjoy looking at your equipment and how much you spent over getting full range speakers. Also not caring about the law of diminishing returns for the dollar spent.
@@MrTennisgolf it's sad,I've never seen such wasted components and not one full range speaker LOL!!! I love these interviews! Keep them coming Steve!
Great talk. Love this system, now you to go to Von Gaylords’s house.
Excellent and very very interesting content. Just curious what kind of investments are needed to get something comparable to what Meyy has... I assume north of $50K ? When a website does not list MSRP prices, I wonder..... Thrilled that he has such a fantastic looking (and presumably, sounding) system....
Tube amps that don't get warm? Time to adjust the bias👍
passion and obsession seem to be understatements here ;)
Great video 📚👍
Viewed the Von Gaylord site & no prices posted. So I guess if you have to ask, you can't afford...
Prices are there, and it's all reassuringly expensive
It wasn't a single one shot purchase. And the cartridge on the tone arm is an ortofon quintet black. Where from Canada are u?
Any advice on this is appreciated.
the speakers I thought were made of cement at first
New to he channel and just watched this.Awesome. Anyone care to venture a guess to what his system costs?
Good luck Meyy!
I really enjoy Kat Edmonson's music! Your choice prompted me to order her latest CD from Amoeba!
Yes she is awesome! I just bought her album "Dreamers do" on Vinyl.
No mention of the cd transport that was clearly visible. An Audiolab 6000 CDT I believe. Would have loved his thoughts on it.
Audio lab 8300 CD. The unit is amazing with plenty of inputs. The dac built in is superb.
@@MrPerfusionist He connects it to the Chord Dave, which is a couple of levels up from there.
Quote I did not appreciate Jazz Music before I bought this high End gear,But now, hearing it on my expensive Equipment I know what it is all about(e.g. Jazz music)unquote.Think about his a few minutes This,I Think is an audiophile in a nutshell and that is why they ,generally speaking,LOVE bands like Pink Floyd etc. For the rest :sympathetic Little guy
That is a great system!
Such a pleasure to see
a.) acoustic treatments
b.) speakers pulled way out
c.) Von Gaylord !? (never heard of them)
Did he mention how he discovered the Von Gaylord brand?
edit; the mattress makes for a great bass trap!
Nice guy. Spend it if you got it, I guess. I think most of us are happy spending about 10% of what he has on his system.
I thought he was going to say Birdie num num (Peter sellers knows what I am talking about
So do I. ;)
I would make one more move if I were you...REL sub hooked up the neutrik cable...then you will have closest to full range sound. It will fill in the gaps.
Great video once again. Beautiful setup but where can I get those speaker stands?
Preston F the stands are made by Sound Anchor in Florida
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Thanks
The man knows his audio and he is not shy to share his views. Awesome.
Great video!
The preamp is the heart of the system
Totally! I felt my soundstage deeply widened after the addition of the preamp
Speakers are very unforgiving (Focal) so I could not listen to digital any other way.
topper45 thanks I’ll look into those. I am considering adding a USB reclocker. I already have a SOtM sms 200
Wonder if Meyy had considered a second Aegir for the 80 wpc?
I did. But the issue is, my preamp is not balanced and only has unbalanced connections. You can use the Aegir in monoblock configuration only through balanced connections.
Lehman Decade is a nice small profile phono stage. :)
I haven’t got any of these components ....but i can afford to eat!
Gary Lawrence that’s some serious money for a little studio apartment 😳 I am sure he could probably gotten a bigger apartment if it weren’t for his hobby😜
obviously your priorities are mixed up..
Great choice with scoutmaster
Many thanks Steve. Interesting how these speakers look similar, including the concrete like texture of the box, to the first speakers ever built in 1980 by the French company Triangle. These speakers are named The Triangle 1180 and were the first high-end model to be marketed by Triangle. See herewith the info link: www.trianglehifi.com/en/history/.
Holy moley. This is a starter setup?
Great, and nice guy...!
I am in the same boat with jazz
Very nice system..........., as well as a very nice guy all around. And by the way, do find a nice source for any used LPS directly from Japan. Japanese pressings along with ones pressed in Germany, are worth the pursuit.
Mevy's a Canadian badass! Is that possible, lol? Nice gear, definitely a class above mine!
But then again, that goes without saying because this is brought to you by the audiophiliac!
Steve the golden ear? Guttenberg! Happy listening.
Oh, yes, 400 sq. ft. is tight but it's New York. And gone are the glory days when you could rent a
three bedroom apartment on the upper westside for $300-$400 (RENT CONTROLLED, boys and girls).
God, I don't know what we would have done as students if that was not the case. And while we were there,
the creepy crawling hand of GENTRYFICATION F-D everything up. Mom and Pop shops closed, revival movie
houses shuttered. Great used book and music stores GONE! Homelessness tripling and quadrupling under
the "great communicator" who, toward the end couldn't even communicate with himself. Reagan, those
were DARK days indeed! And then there was that giant BS-er, The Donald, lol!
TRUMP Taj Mahal anyone! I was there, lol. Horrendous architecture and cheap workmanship and taste!
Fortunately, it's GONE! Phenomenal business acumen. Alas America!
Those speakers by Von Gaylord in mahogany, are bout $19,000.00/pair!
Curious about the digital/analog A/B testing mentioned - how much did the results have to do with the mastering? Do engineers master CD’s and LP’s differently?
Yes it certainly does. But my friend chose analog purely based on "how he enjoyed the music". Infact digital was more transparent and pure, but analog was more lush sounding and mesmerizing and enjoyable - according to him
Meyy Arunachalam p
I think you can just VISIT Canada and automatically become super friendly, lol
Love that Harry Potter thing on the wall
Hep those Audio Physics like Spark and Tempo are apartment freindly. So are the PMC transmission line columns
Engaging and interesting guy.
Thank you :)
Does anyone know of a site that gives details of how albums were mastered? Sometimes it’s hard to find whether they sourced digitally or analog. Thanks.
Can somebody explain to me why you need all that equipment for two small speakers
kc Jones This is when you enjoy looking at your equipment and how much you spent over getting full range speakers. Also not caring about the law of diminishing returns for the dollar spent.
@@MrTennisgolf it's sad,I've never seen such wasted components and not one full range speaker LOL!!!
And these so called audiophiles act surprised when they hear a 3stage speaker (high, mid ,low)they say (Oh my what clarity of the vocals I've never heard anything like it )That's crazy and they need 50k to achieve that sound.
And oh my 800k for a 30watt OMA SETUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE NONSENSE. Bose introduced the 2way speaker setup CUBES IN THE 80S and since then this has become the norm.
AUDIOSILLYNESS.800K FOR 30WATTS!
There are no dumb questions: Will entry level separates blow my mind if I have always had mid fi integrated? Or is the difference a minor one?
does von still work in Rays company??
These speakers design exactly look like oceanway audio eureka speakers. Also from same location . Any relation between both designers in past ?
KVR Listening Room my LSA cabinets look like about 20 other companies designs. Wide front teardrop to the rear. Common
@Doug G : I am sure even you’re not looked at their website.
Nothing beats AM radio for organic...
