    Just literally planned out and started filming my own version of some travel photography tips ☺️ One thing I do that's similar to you, but I feel more efficient, is setting up a template folder structure with all cameras for the trip, then just duplicating that folder for each day and labelling with the yyyy-mm-dd_location
    Also, another thing I think a few people will mention, is use "Arrange by" rather than "Clean up" in finder. It'll save you doing it every time!
    Glad to see you had an awesome time with the Matterhorn and other adventures!

  • @apeculiarplanet
    @apeculiarplanet 7 лет назад +2

    Awesome video! Good stuff!
    Another necessary item: Portable iPhone charger. Shooting vid or photos with your iPhone drains the battery fast. The portable charger I have will charge the phone 3x before the charger needs charging. So I don't have to find somewhere to charge while out walking about and shooting.
    There is an app called Magic Hour, tells you when the Magic Hour (hour before and after sunset/sunrise) will begin based on your location.
    The more I travel, the less I want to carry. This is a personal preference, but lugging too much crap just sucks. I prefer a shoulder sling bag...my intent is to look like I am on my way to or from work etc. Photo backpacks, IMO, make you a target.

    other tips.
    if your shooting in cold (like really cold) with metal tri/mono pods you should pick up some grip tape (the type for hockey sticks) and wrap that around the places you normally touch.
    As an extension of Doing your homework research photography laws in the place your going. there are heaps of places you can get I trouble for taking pictures of specific buildings or people. Don't get in major trouble for pointing your camera at the wrong building or flying a drone in the wrong area.

    There's pros and cons to a backpack. Ten years ago I spent four months researching a book on Ansel Adams and traipsed all over California, New Mexico, Arizona, etc hiking all over creation, and I used a top of the line Kata backpack that was supremely comfortable and came with excellent strapping. Only problem, and it does get tedious, is that you have to undo the belt and drop the thing to the ground when you need or want something, then hoist it back up and do the buckles up again - if it weighs as much as mine did that gets really old after a while. Sure, you can hang a camera from your neck or the straps, and I generally us a vest to carry bits and pieces I may need in situations like that, but if you're using a couple of bodies, need to switch to a different lens, or have to grab the tripod, then back you go to taking the pack off again. It's times like that when you wish you simply had a shoulder bag, but of course carrying one of those all over the place would kill your shoulders after a while. For long days of tramping everywhere backpacks are definitely the way to go, but they do have their limitations as well.

    Great video Peter! - as always. I happen to already do pretty much everything you talked about here so it was a nice reassurance to hear all that from you. I however prefer sunrises as opposed to sunsets for two reasons - 1. the most popular places are significantly less crowded and some places are just impossible to shoot at sunset unless you don't mind a bunch of random people on your photos or post-processing hassle to remove them; and 2. it's easier to make it on time at the right time especially when you're travelling with family and have bunch of things planned for the day, sometimes it's hard to make it on time for the sunset. With sunrise you just gotta wake up early enough. And yeah sometimes you don't get to choose because the azimuth of where the sun is on the horizon is key to the shot - like shooting Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn.

    I think for photographers on a budget you may be able to make something quite similar to the variable ND filter shown here by using a pair of Real3D glasses common at movie theaters. I believe rotating one of the lenses causes a similar if not identical effect.

  • @KoriMoncur
    @KoriMoncur 7 лет назад

    Awesome video man -- these are the types of tips that can really propel one's creativity forward and make hobbies into careers. One suggestion I have -- you mentioned using a variable ND filter for shooting in bright daylight situations -- well I would suggest a similar trick for still getting gorgeous shots when you can't make it to sunrise/sunset: Use a gradient filter! Grads as they're called commonly come in various artistic styles, everything coral gradients to soft grads and have a similar strength range to ND filters (e.g. ND2, or soft grad .9). They can make your colours pop and really "boomify" your photos at anytime of of day. Better yet, if you use them at sunrise/sunset your photos will look even more amazing. Of course investing in decent filters can get pretty expensive...

    This is so true!! Went to Nashville at the beginning of April. Wanted to get some night shots from the rooftops but no bars would let you go in with your backpack. Then I said I’ll leave my back pack down here and they still would not allow any detachable lens. 🤦🏻‍♀️I was so upset so I went back to the car and left my camera in there.

  • @foraggio
    @foraggio 7 лет назад

    Great tips, Pete. The only one I would question is searching Instagram for the location you're heading to for inspiration. That often throws up way to many shots and a lot of them are just plain crap. Sometimes you get lucky, but it can be a minefield. If you're going to a tiny place not many people visit, it's probably good, but otherwise, I reckon a Google search of "photography [location]" is a better option.
