Good for you, and thanks for reminding me that the public is unfamiliar with most of the equipment and jargon used by the military...I did my time in the Corps back in the 80s and take the knowledge I gained for granted...I appreciate your enthusiasm and support...Folks should know that the public service in the military is less than 2% of the country's population...👍

Neil, great video. I retired from SKF Aeroengine in Falconer, NY with over 30 years. We were a main supplier of bearings for the Sikorsky Black Hawk through both them direct and the original engine manufacturer, General Electric who I was the inside sales contact for 20 years.
A helicopter is a bearing manufacturers dream.

Everyone I know mom, dad, uncles, grandfather, was in the military. Army and Air Force, I am so happy to see the Christmas, the Thanksgiving, the months they were away, someone understands that. It is a sacrafice, it has nothing to do with the President, who you don't like in politics or anything. They work 24/7, go all over the world, and IMO don't get paid enough. Thank you Dig-Drive-DIY for sharing your citizenship as an American. We should respect anyone in any military capacity, even the people who work for the military who are still citizens.

Hi Neil, thank you for this filming and the young man that ask you to come do it. Now Boys and Girls - I was in the Arkansas Army NG. And during my Junior year of H. School 1963, my parents signed for me to be in the local guards. It was cool - went 8 days after graduating HS to basic training & cook school at Fort Polk LA for 5mos. 8days and 10hrs. - then back home where I completed my drills and summer camps and out in 1969. Good stuff and they need you too. They will test you for what you can do for them. Boy or Girl, sign up for your 6-year duty now. No, I don't have anything to do with recruiting, I just know it's a good way to start out in life - because it was good for me. I was married and worked for the Fire Department before I got out.

My grandfather (like many other grandfathers) was in the Army. My two brothers served in the Army and Marines, respectively. I worked half of my medical career as a civilian in military Hospitals in California and Germany. Personally, the mental strain and emotions of seeing countless patients physically suffer or have life-altering injuries because of their occupation and employer became increasingly challenging to cope with and understand.

I've never flown in a helicopter either, so was very interested in your reactions to it. But as you said in the video, some people have to do this sometime all day every day. As such they treat it as such a regular thing that they become faced with the tedium of yet another flight. You really got the "feel" of the whole experience, Thanks From UK.

I had the “honor” of being in a Blackhawk crash in Panama waaaaay back in 1989. Talk about a memory I’ll never forget! Everyone was fine until the dumb new air crew guy yelled “We’re on fire and going to blow.” That got all our heart rates and adrenaline pumping. Needless to say, there was no fire, no real injuries, except the new guys ears from the berating and ass chewing he got from us all for scaring everybody.
Ended up doing 6 years active duty as a 13B Field Artillery and in the Army Reserves Transportation Corps before getting out. I don’t miss it, but I sure miss being young! Haha!

Neil… my first helicopter ride was at Marine PLC in Quantico VA. That was in 1973. It was an HH-153 Super Jolly Green Giant.
At the young age of 20, this farm boy had never been further from the ground than he could jump or ride an elevator. I had no idea what to expect…
We were marched out to the helipad at 0800 with our rifles and gear. When we arrived we split into squads… each one marched to a separate chopper. Our approach was from the front.
When I halted at the side, the door opened and I got my first look at the luxurious accommodations inside. The seating was two back-to-back church pew like wooden benches running down the center. Seat belts (lap belts only) were spaced along the seats. The seats were just deep enough that half of our butt cheeks sat on them …. Our packs were on our backs.
After about 5 minutes of brow beating instruction and insults, he stepped out the door and closed it. It didn’t take long for the hot muggy August sun to soak us in perspiration.
Eventually, the engine started and we lifted off. A thousand thoughts ran through my head… excitement, adventure, amazement… and then, two crewman stepped to the doors and slid them open on each side.. The cool fresh air was a relief. Another round of feelings swept through me as I looked out at the sights below.
Just as I was beginning to feel comfortable and safe… the pilot made a hard right turn (the side I was sitting on). As he did, the chopper tilted in a high bank curve. Instantly I was pulled against my seatbelt with what felt like 10G’s of force. The rifle strapped over my shoulder fell forward and slapped against my helmet… the soldier next to me screamed and grabbed my leg. There was no way to prevent falling. The soles of my boots were useless against the bare aluminum decking…
In an instant I regretted having not started my prayers earlier.
And then, I felt the intense garrote of the seatbelt dig into my gut. The agony of that huge buckle digging into my navel was totally forgiven when sanity seeped back into my consciousness… I was alive and safe!
After what seemed like an hour, but was probably only 30 seconds, the pilot changed course and made a sharp turn to the left … giving the soldiers on the left their initiation into USMC flight.
Neil, I’m so happy that you got the chance to fly on one of those aircraft. They are a marvel to see from without and an absolute wonder to take in from within.
The explosive demo had to be as equally thrilling to watch and experience. I grew up around farmers who used TNT to blow up stumps and rocks. But, when you feel that concussion from high explosives… it just ain’t the same!!!
You did an excellent job of bringing this info to a whole new audience… and as a bonus to your experience… you got some cool swag too!
    I enjoyed this one immensely.
    Thanks

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 месяца назад +4

Wow! Your first experience sounds a lot more intense than mine, Dave! I'm sure they could have been much rougher on us than they were but our flight was smooth and "tourist-like" if you get my drift. :).
I can imagine your situation though where they're breaking in all the new privates! It's got to be fun for some of those pilots but miserable for those that don't know what's coming!
This was a terrific experience for me on many levels. Not only did I get to ride in the helicopter, but it gave me even more perspective and filled in some gaps on what I thought I knew.
I've always had a tremendous respect for military personnel. To the point where when I think about it too much, I can get a lump in my throat and feel a bit embarrassed for my lack of involvement. Getting this small little glimpse just helped to solidify what my prior gratitudes had assumed .
Thanks for your service sir and as always I appreciate your commitment to this comment section and support of the channel.

As someone who spent WAY too much time at Atterbury (great memories!) I did enjoy the employer dog & pony show events. It gives civilians a taste of what it’s like to serve AND adds some perspective to what their “employee” is doing when they need to be gone for 2 weeks in the summer. Plus you find out we have acronyms for EVERYTHING!! King of Battle!

As a North-European it's a genuinely refreshing change to experience an American genXer put on a bulletproof west for the first time and proceed to make a positive video about national defense; all without acting like a derailed gun nut. ❤

In case you didn’t know Neil, the electronic engine controls that are mounted on the GE engines of the Blackhawk are manufactured by BAE systems on the south side of Fort Wayne. It’s a very good company where I had the
    pleasure of leading a great
team that built those T700 controls for many years.

Thank goodness we have women and men willing to spent a goodly portion of their lives doing what active duty , reservists and retirees do/ have done. We owe all a debt we can never repay.

Thank you so much for highlighting this opportunity to provide a wonderful service to our country! While military life can be highly rewarding, it is also a significant commitment. The National Guard is a perfect half-in-half-out option!

Started my military career as an Army Reservist at Camp Atterbury......went onto active duty, served in 2 wars and all over the world. I am retired now and in CO but miss my Hoosier home everyday. Each time I come home for a visit it gets harder and harder to leave.

I worked for Army Corps of Engineers for 34 years and the Army and DoD are very interesting and large organizations. I worked for the Engineer Research and Development Center the R&D part of the Corps of Engineers. We did research worldwide for both the military and civilian missions of the Corps of Engineers. I was proud to work for and help DoD complete their missions. I was the Chief of Finance and Accounting. Small job we had 2500 employees and a $1.3B annual budget. It was an honor to serve with and for our service members as a civilian.
