    challenges with the test include unknown particle size. Also, probably need an ultrasonic mixing method as these powders don't stay suspended well after sitting. It also seems the quantity of material for the volume of fluid is quite high. Interesting none the less.

    Love how your methods got more scientific from your first WS2 video. Also like that stop-motion-y type frame rate, it somehow makes everything so much more visually pleasing on these types of videos. Do you edit the audio too?
    Anyway love what you’re doing and I hope your efforts start to catch on, even if only within a niche of the gearhead community.

    So which is better? I see ws2 falls out of suspension faster than hbn but do they both adhere to metal in a similar way. Even if ws2 has lower friction than hbn, if its in suspension for less time, does it make it overall better for engine oil?
    Also FYI Your title has a typo, missing the H on hexagonal

    If they are very good why hypoid differencial oils dont use these additives? Are they ok to use in ball bearings?

    • @edogsx
      @edogsx  Год назад +1

      some motor oils use them as an additive in low concentrations (below 100ppm) because solid additives cause deposit problems

    •  Год назад

      @@edogsx Thanks. Are these additives suitable for differencials with bearings?

    • @edogsx
      @edogsx  Год назад +1

      @ sellers of this type of additive say yes but I honestly wouldn't do it, at least not at the dosages they recommend.
      solid additives tend to settle and aggregate, in ball bearings they can also modify the clearance tolerances

    I would have thought Tungten compounds as well as Boron Nitride to be abrasive given they are hard materials. How does this lend itself to an obviously lower amount of friction? What's the theory behind it?

    • @edogsx
      @edogsx  3 года назад +4

      WS2 and h-Bn have a two-dimensional platelet structure and a high hardness which results in a very low sliding friction coefficient.
      The theory is that very small particles of this material mechanically adhere to the metal surfaces of the engine creating a hard and sliding boundary layer thus reducing friction.
      Your doubts are legitimate and I share them ...

    • @charlesdickens6706
      @charlesdickens6706 3 года назад +1

      .....it's interesting huh. Tungsten carbide for example is an abrasive whereas the sulphide is a lubricant. Diamond is extremely hard whereas graphite being a different carbon allotrope is a lubricant. Sodium is hazardous and chlorine is deadly but we like salt in food .

    • @bobirving6052
      @bobirving6052 10 месяцев назад

      Haha yup.
      Tool steel can be made into files that could cut your engine, or it could be made into balls that would make very low friction bearings.

    • @nathanwest2304
      @nathanwest2304 3 года назад +1

      don't worry about it
      hBN weighs less than 1/3 of WS2
      it does settle a little bit after a long time, but not nearly as bad as WS2

  • @nathanwest2304
    @nathanwest2304 3 года назад

    so basically they are both the same?
    I guess hBN is the winner since it's lighter and won't settle as fast
    someone should do a test how quickly they settle including MoS2^^

      @@wretched_spawn8694 0,4 oz equals about 12 ml. In engine oil the mixing ratio is 5g/10g of WS2 for 1L of oil.
      Therefore you need to use 0,12g of WS2.
