    You say many Americans "care" about places such as Mexico or China. I think you're wrong. They care only insomuch as these places are viewed as threatening to the US. Few know anything about these countries' people, history, lifestyle, geography, or domestic politics. This is where the US in unique.

    • @Bakers_Doesnt
      @Bakers_Doesnt 2 месяца назад +12

      Saying the US is unique in anything illustrates your point magnificently. Ironic. It's also worth considering the distinction between empathy and awareness when talking about "caring about" other people; you can know virtually nothing about Africans but still care about droughts, wars and famine, and vice versa: be totally clued-up and still not give a crap.
      I still think it's funny that some Americans think all black people are "African-American", especially when they are neither African nor American. It's an interesting oxymoron of genetic origins and nationality. Biology and geography are so rarely smashed together to produce benign idiocy.

    • @SnowyRVulpix

    The Toubon law in France isn't banning radio stations (or tv channels) to play too much american music. That law says that tv/radio have to play a minimum of (iirc) 40% of songs sung in French or in one of France's regional languages (Britanny, French Basque Country or Corsica languages, for exemple, even if they're not the only ones). It was also designed to promote new/emergent artists but some stations were not submitted to it. For exemple, radio stations airing mainly old-timers like Radio Nostalgie or centered around Jazz or classical music weren't submitted to it for obvious reasons. 40% was the base model, but there were two alternatives with lesser quotas as low as 20% but I can't remember what were their specifics.
    That law was a law of preservation of the French cultural and lingusitic heritage and it was also aimed at other communications : for exemple, international transport was submitted to an obligation to have their documents translated in French and any other language (German for goods going to/originating from Germany, etc), international corporations with employees in France have to communicate with those employees in French, ...
    The law was criticised when it was designed in 1994 and was amended multiple times during the 30 years it has been in application. It's far from perfect, but it (kinda) works.

      This law is a social one, not an economic one. You can say it's a nationalist one, not a socialist one and it's effect on 'capitalism' was marginal. And France doesn't have a problem with sustainable capitalism; just with non-regulated neoliberalism.

    It’s simple 100% capitalism is not fair. It’s designed that way so uneducated people have uneducated children. The uneducated are also the poor. So as more people move out of the middle class to lower class their children get the same education as the poor/ uneducated, so because late stage capitalism concentrates wealth at the top and the middle class shrinks, there are more lower class and therefore more uneducated. Capitalism is not a sustainable economic system. It is not only resources inefficient it also disadvantages the population until you get societal collapse, not only because the people are poor but because they don’t have the education to change the situation, they lack the ability to process the problems they face and therefore chase simple answers that have been tried before and failed before.

      And yet the Scandinavian countries, which are rated as more capitalist than the US, are doing very nicely. No economic system can really be regarded as long-term sustainable because no such system exists in a vacuum. Any economic system is going to be highly influenced by the political and social systems that surround it, and which can change. Regulated capitalism, as we see in the Scandinavian countries, works well for the people because of the political and social environment in which it operates. Poorly-regulated capitalism, as we see in the US, doesn't work well for the people as a whole because of US politics and societal norms.

US R rated are very often 14+ in Canada and 12+ in France. Sometimes PG. That's also a way to control exposure, not only to contents, but to ideas and perspectives that might challenge mainstream values or societal norms. This kind of rating system indirectly influences what people, especially younger audiences, can access, shaping cultural understanding and limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints or controversial topics. And quite unfortunately it's also a recipe to a backfire romanticizing of violence and excesses.

But how do you revise a political system that is a couple of hundred years old and that a population is happy to have. And what right do we as outsiders have to tell another country how they should be?

Most UK workers are entitled to 28 days' paid holiday, Americans aren't entitled to any paid holiday, most get just 10 days. If that's all you're not going to waste it on going half way round the world to somewhere you don't know. As for "UK workers", they might travel abroad more, but are famous for only travelling because of wanting better weather / cheap alcohol, and not really care about where they are. Or they know the name of the resort they fly to (Las Palmas, Larnaca), without knowing what language is spoken or what country the place belongs to. Not all of them, of course. Each small area has different people (ethnicity), cultures, foods, accents, etc. There are 50 states and each one of those states has multiple cultures inside of it. Well, most of the 50 do. Point is, you could vacation to a state a year for 50 years. THAT is why we don't usually leave the land of the free.

You could do Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon (both of which are utterly fantastic and I urge everyone to go) and still have time to do something really adventurous - if it doesn't work out then you haven't wasted your whole year's entitlement. The way your government controls information shapes your culture, sometimes in wierd ways. And sometimes actually they end up being comically stupid.
    I'm from Portugal, and for 50 years we were a dictatorship; it ended in 1974 with a magnificent, mostly peaceful revolution.
    However, during those 50 years the regime deliberately aimed to perpetuate what was a shocking level of illitearcy compared to other European countries, and which we're still dealing with today (until all of that generation dies the numbers will remain).
    And this was advantageous to the regime because it's much easier to control the ignorant than the informed - we also had heavy censorship on everything, so that didn't help.
    One of ways the regime decided would help them keep people ignorant was to subtitle all foreign media that played on television, or in the movie theatres. If people couldn't read, they couldn't understand what was going on.
    However... this backfired spectacularly, because people not only started to learn how to read from the subtitles themselves (some words like yes or no are great starting points to identify sounds), but people also started to learn foreign languages by ear, since you had the translation right there.
    So incredibly, the way they chose to block knowledge from the people while pretending to actually be doing something good was so botched, they ended up giving many people _an education_ .
    To this day there are no dubs in Portugal, with the exception of media for children, everything else is still subtitled.
    What I'm getting from the video you're reacting to is that the USA had its own form of government-mandated censorship, which is pretty odd, but also makes perfect sense, considering what it ended up becoming.

    • @omatjalisvideot9734
      @omatjalisvideot9734 2 месяца назад

      Well we have had also every program here subtitiled for tens of years, but it had nothing to do with people not knowing how to read. It was about money, dubbing is a lot more expencive than subtitiling. Bigger nations like Germany, France and Spain could affor dubbing, but smaller nations like Portugal, Finland, Denmark and so on could not in the 1950 or 1960.
      It is actually the other way around. subtitles actually increase the the understanding and reading profiliancy in a country, as you also mention. In fact in your nabouring country the same time dictatorship actually demanded dubbing for all foreign programs. It is easier to learn foreing languages with subtitles and hence many small coutries, with subtitles, have better understanding of other languaces, than bigger nations with dubbing.

    The French law was passed to control anglo-saxon music (not specifically American).
    A minimum of 40% must be "chanson française" so there's still plenty of air-time for saxons to plug their hits.!!
    Some stations of-course are 100% francophone, but you get that in nearly all non-english speaking countries, ESPECIALLY overseas (outside Europe) where english is understood only by the small percentage of "highly educated class".

    I hate how "America is the greatest country in the world" turned to "America is the worst country to ever exist"
    America is absolutely awesome in some ways probably the greatest in a couple of metrics.
    America is also absolutely horrendous at a number of things that a lot of people value
    Although there are many things I would change, on the global scale I am grateful that the US exists, you know, security in Europe reasons.
    In a weird way, some of America's defense budget helps enable some of the things we love to greater extend, because we would be having to spend more on our defense budgets if America wasn't this ahead and our ally
    And as much as we say they spend to much on defense budget, which they realistically probably do, we definitely all need America to spend enough on it.
    I don't like the idea of living in a world where China or north Korea or some place like that becomes the global superpower. Especially if China takes over Taiwan in the near future and the US is unable to stop it, if China controls that much of chip manufacturing in Taiwan uncontested it's probably gg.

      Europian NATO members standing armies are together about 1,5-1,7 times the Russian army size, not counting any reserve troops. They have more aircraft than Russia or China and their Navy is only smaller compared to China nad USA. I think the EU has big enough army. It is offen missed, that Europe is not just depending on 1 army, it has multiple armies and when compined are actually really big.

    • @wannes9125
      @wannes9125 2 месяца назад

      @omatjalisvideot9734 true and fair
      Though I don't know how much the EU army could project their power proactively to prevent certain risks, like China taking Taiwan.
      I could be wrong, but I feel like the US is in a unique situation with their military and their power protection that allows them to interfere with things all over the globe very quickly.
      I feel like this ability is pretty vital in stopping or even just deterring something, I don't think Europe could take this role within any reasonable time frame for us not to need the US.
      I will grant that if the entirety of the situation was things along the lines of Russia invading a country, Europe could probably manage a lot better than people think, I just don't know if we could do enough outside of Europe

      I think it is just a symbtom from the real reason, which is fear. Fear makes national leaders look invard and make big differences between nations. They will find enemies from outside and bolster internal strengths. This is evident from all nations where isolation happens. Fear also leads to propaganda about own nations superiority, as you have to give a view to people that we are strong, so fear not as long as you have the right leaders.
      This has happended in Germany and Italy in 1930s, in USA from 1950s, Russia for the entire history, China for its communist history, North Korea, Irak, Iran, the list is really never ending ...
