It's kinda the matchup. Byleth is normally a hard matchup against Steve so he can't fight up close like he can against other characters since Byleth's long range attacks can wall him out. Really his best option is to get gold and diamonds first so he can at least compete in the damage range despite having less range. One of my best friends has a really good Byleth and trying to box him face to face is really hard. And my playstyle is not to place blocks and camp for materials which I should do more and make him approach me through blocks.
I mean, it's a Steve you're not exactly supposed to to go gung-ho on Byleth. Weird, I've never heard anyone say "camp" in a fighting game. You kinda have to distance yourself until you've got enough materials. Not having enough materials is a death sentence for a Steve especially in the middle of the fight.
Its looks to me like PS2 is Steve's best stage if you want to camp. Nice and wide, has the platforms, and doesnt give wood/dirt, which seems to me to be a good thing because once thats gone you can always have good wall materials
Salem just has this weird way of playing where he just doesn't care about his material usage haha. Like he will take time to mine, but when it comes to fighting he will throw any move out without thought of how many materials he has left. He did the same with Hero's MP bar. It stresses me out when I see him super low on resources and still going at them hard haha.
If smash is adapting to your opponent, then the enemies are expecting you to do certain things. Giving 0 shits about your resources and attacking when it seems like camping is the clear option might get you a surprise hit

Sure you won't be killing at 30 but side smash is not easy to land outside roll reads, 2 frames or ledge traps. Byleth is a good pick since he has a tether recovery and ranged options. Mk Leo just didn't seem to be playing normally, maybe with the lag, but I watched a lot of his matches and something just seemed... Off. Not to discredit Salem, but lots of people seem to focus more on how good the characters "are" rather than the players performances.

I'd love to see this offline but with Joker. I wonder how well Salem would manage against Joker being much faster, however Joker would probably struggle more to kill since it'd be a lot of fishing for stray hits while Steve runs away. Overall I feel like Lucina would have been the better option since she's both fast, has disjointed moveset, and high kill power stray hits.
jokers speed and fall speed completely kills salems game plan here imo. He camped to mine by putting up that wall and byleth has no options overtop it nor through. Joker has many more options, including ground options to break the wall without being stuck in lag. I think Lucina has similar problems as byleth for dealing with walls

What Salem is currently lacking is utilizing all of Steve’s assets. I mean Steve is literally from a game that is all about creativity and adventure. Key word Creativity. As much as I love him playing as the current dlc fighter there are so many options for getting out of certain situations. Such as using the elytra for recovery since you are able to glide to the platform. Using red stone to detonate tnt while mining safely so that his opponents won’t rush him. Also using blocks for trajectory to launch fighters in a certain position say to the bottom blastzone of the stage or the opposite side of where they are currently fighting at. Though I can give Salem props for using blocks to block Leo’s attacks. That’s a smart way to safely mine. If Salem can master Steve’s assets then he might be an unstoppable force. Overall nice clutch Salem

People are vastly misrepresenting steve in an unfair way. As one who is thinking about maining, I will start off by acknowledging that he's not totally balanced. But he only has 2 real offenders for balance, and those are up smash and up tilt. The reason they are offenders is because his upsmash has the power and hitbox of Zelda's and Mewtwo's up-smash, but it also comes out instantly. This is a straight up power creep and makes it the best up smash in the game. This needs to be tweaked. His up tilt is also an offender on this reasoning: Metaknight's gig is laddering, but his ladders do something like half of the damage that Steve's uptilt does. Considering that this is metaknight's gig, either metaknight's up tilt needs a buff or steve's up tilt needs a nerf. Outside of those 2 abilities, he's very balanced though. Everything requires resources, and gathering resources means being punished. The other misrepresentation of steve is him being "campy". The big difference between Steven and olimar and ness and sammus is that Steve is not running away for the purposes of fighting you at range. Steve is a largely melee character, while those other named characters use their running away to hit you from those positions. It is super obnoxious when they are constantly running away and attacking you, but steve doesn't have that playstyle so much. His cart is his only really campy ability, and many non-campy characters have ranged abilities like the cart. His fishing rod is a ranged grab and can be considered campy, but many other characters who are not campy have tether grabs, also. The big distinction between a campy character and steve is that steve is running away to gather resources to come fight you in melee. He's not trying to stay away, and he's not going to remain away. He just needs to live long enough to have a fighting chance. That's not really obnoxious. Sure, he becomes really powerful if he gets diamond. but that's pretty hard to get to, and even sustaining a net positive resources is challenging.
Iunno, the whole match was a lot of Enderman running away and hiding behind a block to mine and shoot more mine carts. Not that he's playing for our entertainment, but I think people have a solid point about this being an insanely boring, campy character. Not that camping is a terrible strategy when trying to win, that just seems to be all this character really has going for him. So kinda makes me wonder how he'll fair when tournaments move offline and he stops being new. They should have given him more spacing options, making a character that needs to stop to peck at the ground in the middle of a fighting game can't be expected to do anything outside run away a lot.
Steve can do nothing beside stray hits,he runs to bait approaches,however unlike sonic who can just dash dance in front of your shield and punish you for existing with easy 0-50 and even 0-80 with platforms Steve has an insanely underwhelming mobility.
What's annoying about this Steve gameplay, is that he's playing exactly like scrubs online. And it still works. If he occasionally threw in some sick combos that someone at a high level could only do, it would be much better. But instead, it's constantly camp on the side, use minecart to escape edge and throw out dair to avoid getting juggled. That's all you ever see

Uhm M2K does know to use the power rails. you also need red stone not just gold. you need both to actually get anything useful. otherwise if that’s not how it works in smash whatever but I’m pretty sure Salem has acquired red stone every time he used side b. which makes you hit harder, faster and stronger

People are vastly misrepresenting steve in an unfair way.
As one who is thinking about maining, I will start off by acknowledging that he's not totally balanced. But he only has 2 real offenders for balance, and those are up smash and up tilt.
The reason they are offenders is because his upsmash has the power and hitbox of Zelda's and Mewtwo's up-smash, but it also comes out instantly. This is a straight up power creep and makes it the best up smash in the game. This needs to be tweaked.
His up tilt is also an offender on this reasoning: Metaknight's gig is laddering, but his ladders do something like half of the damage that Steve's uptilt does. Considering that this is metaknight's gig, either metaknight's up tilt needs a buff or steve's up tilt needs a nerf.
Outside of those 2 abilities, he's very balanced though. Everything requires resources, and gathering resources means being punished.
The other misrepresentation of steve is him being "campy".
The big difference between Steven and olimar and ness and sammus is that Steve is not running away for the purposes of fighting you at range.
Steve is a largely melee character, while those other named characters use their running away to hit you from those positions.
It is super obnoxious when they are constantly running away and attacking you, but steve doesn't have that playstyle so much. His cart is his only really campy ability, and many non-campy characters have ranged abilities like the cart. His fishing rod is a ranged grab and can be considered campy, but many other characters who are not campy have tether grabs, also.
The big distinction between a campy character and steve is that steve is running away to gather resources to come fight you in melee. He's not trying to stay away, and he's not going to remain away. He just needs to live long enough to have a fighting chance. That's not really obnoxious. Sure, he becomes really powerful if he gets diamond. but that's pretty hard to get to, and even sustaining a net positive resources is challenging.
Iunno, the whole match was a lot of Enderman running away and hiding behind a block to mine and shoot more mine carts.
Not that he's playing for our entertainment, but I think people have a solid point about this being an insanely boring, campy character.
Not that camping is a terrible strategy when trying to win, that just seems to be all this character really has going for him. So kinda makes me wonder how he'll fair when tournaments move offline and he stops being new.
They should have given him more spacing options, making a character that needs to stop to peck at the ground in the middle of a fighting game can't be expected to do anything outside run away a lot.
Steve can do nothing beside stray hits,he runs to bait approaches,however unlike sonic who can just dash dance in front of your shield and punish you for existing with easy 0-50 and even 0-80 with platforms Steve has an insanely underwhelming mobility.
I disagree with you minecart is one of the best specials in the game hands down.
What's annoying about this Steve gameplay, is that he's playing exactly like scrubs online. And it still works. If he occasionally threw in some sick combos that someone at a high level could only do, it would be much better. But instead, it's constantly camp on the side, use minecart to escape edge and throw out dair to avoid getting juggled. That's all you ever see
I'm kinda mad at the fact that everyone hated Sonic for camping endlesly but now love Steve for doing the same.

Uhm M2K does know to use the power rails. you also need red stone not just gold. you need both to actually get anything useful. otherwise if that’s not how it works in smash whatever but I’m pretty sure Salem has acquired red stone every time he used side b. which makes you hit harder, faster and stronger
It's silly that redstone doesn't show up with the rest of the materials on the UI.
I have not once in my entire life used minecart and been like "I RAN OUT OF REDSTONE!!!"

I am definitely not saying Salem doesn't deserve the win or plays bad, but steve gameplay in general seems too campy for my liking to watch. Steve almost never initiates an interaction unless they have Diamond tools or the opponent is in an disadvantage position.

Come on, seriously? CAMPY? A true camper hits you from the other side of the map, trying to keep you away. Steve just camps to get resources. That's not really campy. He's just trying to live long enough to be able to engage close up.

@@alexina4567 Steve gameplay resolves around camping to get resources and using that cheap mine cart to keep opponents away. So I define that as "campy". It might be a different kind of camping, but its still not enjoyable to watch for me.

Steve's neutral is him mining and being patient almost all the time.
Those 2 don't work well with each other, but that's just my point.

Second off, you didn't really read what I said. I stated that Sonic can go aggro when he WANTS TO, but top players decide not to, simple as that.
With Steve, you're require to hang back because going with no items is suicide. Also, for the record, yes, I have seen top level Sonic play. Again, they decide not to go aggro because they play to win.

I can’t; his skill ceiling is absolutely monstrous but his skill floor makes him extremely hard to effectively use for most players
