  • Today we visit a section of abandoned WW2 tunnels that has been cut off from a larger set that we have already been to. What we didn't know is that deep in the tunnel system, a wall has been breached which lands you in a main sewage drain with a huge river of poo!
    In 1939 a huge set of public air raid tunnels where built deep below the streets of a large costal town in order to protect up to 60,000 people. These tunnels are not open to the public and are extremely dangerous. Join us today as we venture deep into the tunnel system.

    The white brick room at 28:58 was an old operating theatre and the ramped entrance leads to an old hospital so they could wheel bed and wheel chairs down during air raids. At 30:01 you can see my name on the wall. The entrance you used to get in has now been sealed up.

      I forgot to mention. Not sure weather you see this; At 25:01 above the pile of mud there is a un-lined shaft belived to be an old well dug before the tunnels were built. The mud must be from the shaft as there was also the same mud in the shaft. I also know where the the manhole cover is leading to the ladder down the narrow shaft to the sewer. You may already know the location, if not i can tell you ?

    Be careful of H2S gas (hydrogen sulfide) in the sewers, bring a 4 gas meter when you're in the tunnels

    • @danielsonhud48
      @danielsonhud48 5 лет назад +6

      l33ta2 Yup your bang on! Especially sewer pipes! Just disturbing 'mud' can release enough to kill you . Some sort of oxygen monitor in tunnels and a toxic gas meter in/or around sewers.I assume a 4 gas meter (no clue) is enough for both?! I noticed an echo change and serious heavy breathing a couple of times in the tunnels of this video. They may or may not be due to low oxygen near some of the dead ends/collapses or even just my imagination. Either way running down a sewer pipe is just plain nuts! A small pocket of toxic gas can kill instantly. Not just H2S, people flush all kinds of chemicals, etc (that they should or SHOULDN'T) down toilets and drains. Good explore though none the less!! 👍🏻

    It amazes me that such amazing tunnels were built in such a short time, love anything to do with WW2, I live near Island Farm, Bridgend, there is a famous story about 84 german POWs escaping, the Natzi equivalent to the great escape, most of it has been demolished and it is now a housing estate but the locals fought to keep a small bit of it and won thankfully. I work in the building which was the main HQ of the huge ROF, it is now police HQ, it has been modernised in recent years but there are still a lot of the old buildings left on the site but my childhood playground was the little known Pencoed Hostels, aka, army stores, which is now a housing estate. Not forgetting the 8x's, Brackla, huge concrete storage tunnels, there are a few left, privately owned and very secure, Dr Who was filmed in one of them, most have been demolished and guess what, houses have been built over them, gutting, sorry about the war and peace rant, lol

    @7:45 "August 6th, 1945" I wonder how long the poor guy stayed there. The rest of England were so busy celebrating and drinking, they forgot about poor old Morton down in the tunnel. Maybe he is still there, like Smeagol. All pale, bald, and hunched over. His clothes have probably rotted off. Most likely he is completely insane by now and lives off cannibalizing people who go exploring the tunnels. If anyone gets separated from the group they may be eaten by Morton. Your flashlights are probably the best defense. Shine them in his eyes, it will blind him after 70+ years living in the dark. Don't let your flashlights battery die.

    The date on one of the graffiti says August 1945, VE day was May 1945. So I imagine the explanation your mate gave was correct about most being 1945 because they were recording for posterity, maybe before the shelter was closed down. The last conventional bombings on London were January 1944. The last ever bombings were two V2's in March 1945, but of course, you didn't know they were coming, so they probably wouldn't of been in the shelter.

      We've got massive Bomb shelters and Military "Hard-Points," (Like Ft Casey,) with tunnels and Pill boxes etc. all around Seattle, but the UK was actually bombed relentlessly during WW2.
      The civilians were in just as much danger, and certainly died in greater numbers back then.

    I suspect the reason why so many of those bits of graffiti were written and dated in 1945 was because they were written at a time when they knew it would be the last time they were going down them and so, wanted to leave a momento and knew the authorities weren't likely to fine or arrest them for vandalism knowing they weren't going to be used again. Smooth concrete is much easier to write on with a pencil than rough chalk!
    You have to wonder why they bothered to cover over that sewer pipe, seeing as, technically, it's going to be left undisturbed. I guess it offered some protection from potential rock fall.
    You'd never get me to go into the, 'poo tube', section you went into. Interesting to see, though. That vertical bit massive and shows just how deep you are underground. Have to be careful going down dry sewer pipes, especially with the danger of methane gas. You should have a meter of some kind, just in case. I've a sneaking suspicion that it's mud you're wading through down that tunnel.

    • @SubExploration
      @SubExploration  5 лет назад +1

      Yes we suspected as much when it came to the graffiti. As for the pipe, who knows. Perhaps to secure it in place.

    • @MrJtappin
      @MrJtappin 5 лет назад +2

      @@SubExploration yes. The weight and pressure of water in a big pipe like that is considerable. It would move and/or burst its sides without being surrounded by support. Would be, er, messy...

    25:08 That mud is probably overflow from the sewer beneath you - which ironically is the overflow for the main system during rainy weather. But I bet what has happened is the overflow sewer you were walking on top of in the WW2 tunnels was just put in with out any watertight seals between the joins, or possibly when they were putting the fill over top of the pipe sections to lock them into position, the digger nudged them out of position near this point. In either case, this location has a leak in the overflow sewer so when ever the overflow is operating near capacity it spills out into this section of tunnel, which then drains back into the sewer once the flow has reduced. But of course the solids settle on the WW2 tunnel floor which is what you are walking on. Enjoy.

    Don’t listen to them having a go about your new Olight . I was really impressed with it but I did say you had to promote it because you had been given it .
    I went to the Olight site through your link and earmarked a few and took the plunge .
    I love your videos although you do scare the hell out of me .
    Now that graffiti is better than today’s .
    You should photograph them and publish locally in the library. I’m sure those people will never be down there again but have fond memories .

      When you see the paper waste on the hand rails in the large sewer chamber (think about that when you're touching the rails), you can think about how much flow they would have through there. I'd love to go exploring but you get to an age when all the dangers start to add up (e.g. gasses, and running into other people).

When you saw that raised area above the pooh tunnel well in the pic there was a piece of rag/tissue, I'm wondering if that area may flood because how else would that nasty piece of material get there ?. Why 1945? The Germans, in a last ditch attempt at defiance, sent over thousands of V1 and V2 missiles, from sites deeper in France and in the low countries. The guidance on these was random, to say the least, and while most did fall on London, others fell short, or wandered off course completely. A V1 'Doodlebug', for instance, crashed in the grounds of Glemham Hall, near Woodbridge, in Suffolk, damaging one whole side of the building, and breaking every window in the place. Glemham Hall is miles from any large town. The randomness of yer actual Vergelstungwaffen, either Ein or Zwei, was terrifying enough for those in range to seek shelter. 26:40 - is that mud, or is it shit? I don't like the look of the yellow water in the puddles. 28:04 - I'm not keen on that pus coloured slime dripping from the ceiling, either. Very nasty indeed.
