    0:45 bap bap bap (space)
The space he leaves before the 1 of the next measure there is masterful. So many people leave this out, they think you gotta lead up to a new verse or whatever with sound, but the absence of sound is often much more powerful. If you can't figure out what fill to use in a spot, consider leaving more space. Empty space is not a bad thing, use it.

I had the pleasure of taking about a 2 hr. private lesson with this GIANT of a drummer at a now defunct venue RICKS CafeAMERICANA in Chicago in the HOLIDAY INN on LAKE SHORE DRIVE he was performing with THEE DIZZY GILLESPIE on New Years Eve . What a gentleman we bumped into each other as we were checking into the hotel I don't know who was nicer the Dizz or Bernard he came to our table and talked , thats when I asked how long he was in town for, I drove to the club a few days later and it was MAGIC I played HOME AT LAST for him off of STEELY DAN "S AJA album, check that one out if you want to hear what the definition of groove is. Not many people know this but he recorded tracks for the Beatles, as we all know he was Aretha Franklin's heart beat, as well as the late great HANK CRAWFORD on alto sax. May he live on forever!! It's a shame that there is still a great majority of drummers and musicians in general who are only impressed by technical chops.

Jazz Orchestra drummer Mike Evans, I’d bump into Bonham, along
with other fine drummers - offshoots of the cosmopolitan hordes
who’d chosen Birmingham as home. Some visits turned into
mini-clinics. I’d watch Mike do his ’Purdie.’ I think
he turned everyone on to Bernard Purdie, whose hi-hat work was
incomparable. Bonham would sit in and funk out, his bass drum playing
that language everyone seemed to be speaking but still not applying as
