    The Bobcat hat on Aaron makes much more sense this morning in the recap video for last week. 😅 I love how easy the attachments disconnect and reconnect on the new one. Also the sound of kids playing in the background is such a beautiful sound. Congratulations on the new toy. I'm super excited to see your progress this summer. Q- will you grow your own hay?

    Horse owner for my whole life and just built a brand new barn on my property. Any maples are extremely toxic to horses. You do not want to plant them near the paddocks at all. While the trees are young it won't seem like a big deal to mow when the leaves fall, but it will become an increasingly HUGE problem when larger amounts of red maple leaves fall and blow everywhere near your barn/pastures. If you have a wind and a branch falls into a pasture, it doesn't take a lot of maple leaves to kill a horse. I would prevent a future headache and heartache. Consider horse friendly trees like Lindens. Do your homework carefully before causing yourself a future tragedy. wind can blow those red maple leaves quite a ways. You might not always be home to grab fallen limbs. Think of the resale value if you are setting up a horse barn and pasture that you can make into hay. Keeping dried up maple leaves out of your hay field will not be easy. Might as well avoid it and get a different species now instead of wishing you had not underestimated the problem it caused you later.

      Not enough land for horses. 😟

    • @barbarawitt9989
      @barbarawitt9989 5 месяцев назад +12

      I agree 👍👍👍💯. Save yourself a ton of regret and heartache down the road. For as strong and sturdy as horses are, they have awfully delicate digestive systems. If it is edible (or appears to be), you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll get into it, with catastrophic results.

      @@Infinity.....Hi there! I wish they had more land as well, but many horses are kept successfully on small acreages with good results.

      @@barbarawitt9989Horses have sensitive livers, as it sounds like you know. 1/2 acre paddock for a horse will be bare dirt in a matter of a week. Yes horses will eat anything they can, and the death from toxic leaves is horrible. I hope they will also know that you cannot use wood chips for mud control or riding areas that contain maple, hemlock, or black walnut wood debris. Many people new to horses do not quite understand the threat and only do realize it when tragedy strikes and their beloved horse gets sick and dies. Might as well make the horse area safe from the start.

    Where do you plan to ride the horses? your land is big but not that big on horseback, if you dont plan on having some kind of arena I would consider making the lanes that your putting in now a good material for riding, that way you at least have a nice "circle" to ride, gravel will not be very good for riding especielly if you plan on doing more then just walking around.

    Since you have the flatbed trailer, hook it up and drive on your lane so you can check out your curves on the corners to get to the barn. A 2 horse trailer tracks pretty well, but longer trailers will cut the corners (think of hay deliveries). Fun watching you plan for horses. Our new property 25 years ago is steep, mountainous and we had to scrape a ton of dirt off to get a pad for the barn. Way to think about the dry lot. Comes in handy especially during mud season so they aren’t destroying the pasture.

    • @marydrew3568
      @marydrew3568 5 месяцев назад

      When designing our horse barn, we made sure we could pull around and through where we could load and park our horse trailer and could drive right through the center of the barn to unload hay. We also included a sacrifice area with drainage and grading. Both the 60 x 120' outdoor arena opened to the pastures. It is hard to think of these things in hindsight and better plan before.

    Yes, you needed a loader upgrade! Congrats. The right equipment is so important. I still think back to your beginnings when you didn't know if you would need a tractor or not. How you've grown! We have a big 42Hp tractor (Kubota) and we have to change the tires by season. Ags in the winter for plowing and timber work then turfs in the summer for landscaping. As long as you move while you turn and don't just grind the tires into the turf or gravel without forward or backward motion you will be fine.

    This is so exciting, Laura! The entro music on Aaron's arrival with the Bobcat is perfect. But thank you for bringing us along on the journey.
    Aaron and Paul work so well together. This channel is such a testament to teamwork. It astounds me.
    P.S. Will y'all create a space for your garden refuse and dirt storage or transfers? I think Aaron would like a compost pile also.

    Where will you be riding your horses? Consider making the driveway thru the dirt lands into a riding lane, no gravel. Where will the kids learn to ride? No round pen. If you have to trailer your horses somewhere off site to ride, they may well become just lawn ornaments.

    Wonderful to see how your plans begin, modify, and move along. The new tractor makes much more sense for you to work on your property. It's wonderful how easily the various pieces connect and disconnect. Aaron is in his glory!

    Could you guys do some longer videos with some before and after shots from 2019 to now? I'd love to see both aerial and garden tour comparisons. I went back to rewatch some older videos and it's astounding how much you've done in 5 years! It would also help get a better sense of where you are at times as it all looks so different, I can get a bit 'lost' in your garden. Thank you!!! :)

    Oh WOW!!! What an amazing Bobcat! We have a John Deere tractor, about 30 years old, and now we are considering buying the adjacent 12 acres to our property, a Bobcat like that would be so awesome for my husband! Maybe it’s time for an upgrade 🤔 You have so many incredible projects going on, it’s really exciting watching it all unfold ❤️

    The graphic made a lot of sense. Four paddocks for two horses also allows you to rotate paddock usage which can help the grass (or you can open the gate between two smaller paddocks to make one larger). When you’re talking to local equine experts, ask them about what grass blends to use. May not be the same as what you’d typically use elsewhere on your property… both because of hardiness and nutrients suitable for horses. Good luck!

    So glad you’re getting horses. I owned 3 and 2 donkeys 🫏. Love them for many years. My horse barn was a “Morton” horse barn. It was beautiful. Well thought out and planned just for equine. Even had room to store our tractor and store round bales of hay. Was not cheap, we wanted quality and well built. Just something to consider. Happy for you all and can’t wait to watch the arrival of beautiful horses. 🐎

    wowow!! this is so exciting and i'm so happy to be going along for the ride... it's a hubby/wife joke here that the wife (me!) has always wanted a bobcat to drive around (our property is tiny here in socal, so it will never happen, but still...).. Aaron is so excited; what little boy didn't dream of driving big machines??? cannot wait to see the changes coming... so happy that y'all can proceed with your dreams like this!!! hooray!! ps.. loved watching the clouds/weather in the background change during the speeded up part of this video... someone was getting some RAIN out of those clouds!! 🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤

    So glad I found your channel. You and Aaron work well together on camera. Love to see your kids and that you include them in some things. Lot of work going into your dirtland. I think this is where you used the cardboard boxes on the ground and dumped dirt over it for planting. I'm actually going to do that on a small scale in creating small "oasis" patches in my frontyard for planting Annuals each spring. I hope I can tackle this soon before Georgia gets its 90 degree summers even in the northeastern part of GA. We are already into June but growing grass in red clay is torture for me so having less to mow will be great for me.

    What fun to plan for horses. I helped out at a riding stable for 10 years, taking out trail rides, currying, tacking up, bringing the horses in from pastures. A suggestion ... in the cold of winter, icy rain and snow, windstorms etc, even just dark of night, having the barn closer to your driveway near your house , or nearby your present barn would be beneficial for you and the horses. You'll want to be checking on them and their food and water at least 2x daily. I'm guessing you'll be hiring barn help for mucking. A short distance to the barn, not only in a blizzard but even just for turnout is a godsend. A design for a stable instead of a barn could mirror the elegance of the Hartley and make proximity to the house more appealing. just sharing from my experience, hope it's helpful.
