we Fiji Indians celebrate Dhanteras by worshipping Lakshmi Mata so that we are blessed with good health, wealth & prosperity therefore I am completely baffled by your story about Dhanteras, also Diwali is a festival which is celebrated by Hindus around the world, nowadays some other cultural groups from different countries also celebrate Diwali

In Southern India, Diwali celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna's destruction of the demon Naraka who is said to have imprisoned women .
In Northern India, Diwali honors the 14 years Vanvas return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and brother Lakshmana, After that save Sita from Ravan called Adharm par dharm ki Jeet .

No in North India people celebrates both narak chaturdashi for lord Krishna also called yam chaturdashi...and deepawali for lord Ram also this is the day when devi Lakshmi arise in samudra manthan that's why people use to worship Lakshmi ji on deepawali...
And dhanteras for lord dhanwantari who came with Amrit kalsh in samudra manthan..

This all happened to be in different time lines , in satya yuga or maybe in other realms ‘ kshreera sagar madhanam’ ‘ samudra manthan ‘ happened then from that goddess lakshmi Matha, moon and god dhanvantari came with AMRIT POT’ hence we celebrate dhanteras or in south ‘dhana thrayodashi’. Next in dwapara yuga naraka chathurdasi god krishna went killed demon narakasura along with satyabhama devi. Next day in tretha yuga it’s Amavasya god Rama returned to Ayodhya on Amavasya day so on Amavasya there will be no moon so everyone light up diyas all over to celebrate return of the king Rama. Hence called deepavali. On Vijaya dasami Rama killed Ravana in war and returned to Ayodhya on Ashviyuja Amavasya ( DEEPAVALI). It’s not Diwali, it’s DEEPAVALI.

In Bengal, Bhratri Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj is called Bhai Phonta and we sisters recite a short poem 'Bhai'er kopale dilam phonta, Jom'er duar e porlo kanta, Jomuna daye Jom ke phonta, ami di amar bhai ke phonta' while putting a tilak of sandalwood paste on our brothers' forehead.
It literally translates to I am putting tilak on my brother's forehead just as Yamuna puts one on Yam's forehead, which will bar/obstruct him from coming closer to Yam's door and hence he will live longer.

In nepal we celebrate in 5 different ways..
    1st day Kaag tihar
    2nd dayKukur tihar
3rd day Laxmi puja and gai puja
    4th day Gobardhan puja
    5th day Bhai tika
On the first day Kaag Tihar, is the day of the crow, the informant of Yama is worshipped. The second day Kukur Tihar is for worshipping the dogs as the agents of Yama. On the third day is Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja. On this day cow is offered prayers and food in the morning, and Goddess Laxmi is offered elaborate prayers and puja in the evening.

The fourth day is for the draught animal, oxen when the Newari community also performs Mha Puja dedicated to oneself. The fifth day is Brothers’ Day when sisters put tika on their brothers’ foreheads and give blessings

Yes , actually every part or India celebrates for different reason
In gujarat we do it because as he mentioned emergence of Laxmi mata during samudra manthan
In north india they do it because of lord Ram's return
In sourh there is a different reason and in east different
In east it is the celebrated as the day lord krishna killed narakasura who was the evil king of Pragjyotishapura, near present-day Assam, and released 16000 girls held captive by Narakasura.
I dont know about the reason In south
Diwali is a significant day for jain and sikhs too. Sikhs celebrate bandi choor divas in remembrance of the release of Guru Hargobind from the Gwalior fort prison by the Mughal emperor Jahangir and the day he arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. So its historical and not necessarily religious
Jains also celebrate it and for them it's a religious reason. I dont remember exactly what was the reason.

In Nepal, 1st day is celebrated as crow tihar where basically according to the calendar dhanteras also falls. Sometimes, before crow tihar and sometimes on the day of crow tihar. We don't say diwali. We call it tihar or deepawali. 2nd day, we worship dog, 3rd day we worship cow in the morning and goddess laxmi in the evening. 4th day we do gobardhan puja and also, mha puja which is a self puja prevalent among newari community. 5th day is bhaitika where we brothers and sisters put tika to each other. We remember goodess laxmi, yamaraj, bali raja, shree krishna on these days. ❤

I just watched a video where the speaker mentioned that Diwali is only celebrated in North India. I want to set the record straight - Diwali is a festival celebrated all across India, not just in the north. It's a beautiful festival of lights that unites people from every corner of our country. By saying otherwise, we unintentionally divide India. Let's remember that Diwali is a celebration of our shared culture and heritage, and it belongs to all of us. So, let's embrace unity and celebrate Diwali together, regardless of where we're from.
