  • Do not try this on your modern car. Use your head, fellas....
Did you know there's a tool to replace a valve stem without dismounting a tire? I didn't until I needed to quickly change some split ones on the race jeep. Don't do this on your daily...but its great in a pinch!

Word of advice, only try this if the replacement stem is warm. If they're cold the rubber won't be flexible enough and it can break the plastic cone that squeezes it into the hole. I've broken a couple before figuring this out.

If you just snip the valve stem the flared part will end up in the wheel. If you are literally just doing it to roll the car around thats fine, but if you are actually going to drive it thats a problem. The hook pulls the whole valve stem out at least.

I want it done right the first time .

Bad tires, abandoned truck. Need tires to hold air for a bit to transport and move around the shop. Took a few minutes instead of an hour debeading tires and then hoping the gnarly old slicks would bead again.
It worked, let me get the truck running, and now it has all new wheels and tires, is running again after 10 years and has a whole new lease on life, so maybe get off your high horse and get out into the shop and do something.

This is easier done without the tool. A hook is good for removal of old stem. And lubricating is essential for tight fits. But the funnel is more than its worth. A dull screwdriver will suffice. Pinch lower section and start insertion. Using screwdriver push the lower section into the rim using small bites working around the hole until only a slight pinch and a push sinks the valve stem to proper position. Inflate and check for leaks.
