Quite informative, although a bit overwhelming in one sitting. I find interesting that the body styles didn't change much, if at all. Make a Fox Body Mustang with styling of your choice? It's something that have piqued my curiosity. Thanks for an informative video on these iconic Mustangs.
Jose Rivera Yes, the parts interchange from '79 all the way through '93. You just have to match the nose (grille/bumper cover) with the correct hood. There are 4 basic frontend treatments: '79-'82, '83-'86 (the '83-'84 grille is different than '85-'86 but the hoods are the same), and '87-'93. (Of course the GT bumper covers are different than LX/base models most years-GTs usually have fog lights except '83). The body side mouldings also only match with the corresponding front or rear bumper covers: 4 basic styles '79-'84, '85-'86, and 2 seperate styles for '87-'93 (one for GT and one for LX). The '91-'93 front fenders have a larger wheel opening which also requires matching fender bodyside mouldings for those years.

I found this post about Foxbodies in an old 2009 post in www.stang.com; Back in the mid-70's, about the time the Mustang II was introduced, Lee Iacocca got his engineers together and gave them an assignment to create a new (for Ford) concept in vehicle production. He wanted to move to "platform" design, where several cars could be built off of one basic pan. At the time Volkswagen was the leader in this concept with their Fox platform, on which they built the Fox, Golf (Rabbit), 100LS and Dasher among others, so the first Ford platform took the name Fox. On it, Ford built millions of Fairmonts, Granadas, Thunderbirds and our beloved Mustangs. I would highly recommend two books for anyone that is interested in Fox Mustangs: The Official Ford Mustang 5.0: Technical Reference & Performance Handbook : 1979 Through 1993 and Fox-Body Mustang Recognition Guide 1979-1993. Both are excellent sources of true and accurate information about our cars. This is why it's called Foxbody. I used to love forums where people actually had Read knowledge. Of all the successor mustangs I feel this generation was the one that most closely captured the spirit of the original. Similar body styles, multiple engines choices, etc. And they didn't need to design any stupid retro gimmicks to sell them either no fake brake cooling vents, no retro dash. It was its own design.
Hello Chris! I agree. That is what makes the Fox Mustang so Iconic! FoxFordCatGuy I believe he was saying that the later model Mustangs had all the "gimmicks" but the Fox had its own design.
8.8 rear end came in MY1985, I seem to recall that the last half of MY1984 cars could have had 8.8 rear ends too. Also, the MAF system was introduced in California in 1988 and on every car in 1989. IIRC, the galloping horse logo was installed in 25th anniversary mustangs and later, so latter half of MY1989 got them, first half of MY1989 did not have horse. Lastly, it was 1991 I believe when Ford changed the geometry of the K-member, so in stock form the 1991 and later cars have more desirable front suspension geometry. Aftermarket K-members address this issue on earlier cars.
I had a 1983 GT fastback or three door hackback , 302 HO high output , HO heads with roller rockers , headers ,dual exhaust of course, 600 Holley crab , bored 30 over, 5-speed 411 rear end gear , positive traction slap bars with rubber pads that came up against the uni-body and locked the rear-end ,not the worsed not the best but so much fun to drive it was unreal!! This car was stolen out of my yard on a roll back truck while at work!! I miss it terrible! It's probably chopped up and parts scattered!! Who knows?? Only the lord 🙏!
I miss the 83 hatchback I had when I was stationed in AZ. Only had a 3.8l in it, but it could keep up with damn near anything. Except the RX7's the Butter Bars were driving. Drove it from AZ to OH on leave many times. Then some idiot hit me head on doing some expensive damage. Had the choice to fix or total it out. I really made the wrong decision.
You missed one; in 1980 they made a sprint model with the 3.3L, 200 circuit. Inline 6, mine had a white body with blue stripes, great car, would give the same year 5.0 L V-8 a run for the money, torquey, fuel efficient runner !!
A pretty good generalization. A little disappointed that the 82 year didn't have much focus though, being the reintroduction of the GT trim after so many years, and being the last year of the pace car front air dam.

We have some great articles on how to do most major engine swaps in a Fox Body - check them out here. lmr.com/products/Fox-Body-Mustang-Engine-Swap-Guide
Fox body = best Mustang ! Probably because I grew up driving them !
Great info. Just wished you could have included the asc mclaren mustang
Yes also the Asc Capri.
T birds and cougars are my favorite
Nice to see the history and changes made on the foxbody ...ps you forgot to mention the gt 350 i own a 84 convertible gt350

Good job Landon, great informative video!! Keep up the good work LMR.
Thank you!
The 77 Ford Granada and Monarch shared a lot from the fox platform.
Is that Mike Clay's Cobra I spotted in the thumbnail and video? I do believe so. Very nice! Great video as usual, and I loved the cobra so much I converted my GT vert into a cobra body style.
You know it!
Interesting that a 2.3 litre 4 cly Ecoboost Mustang has more hp then the older 5.0 8 cly Mustangs
I'm pretty sure these are 2valve per cylinder so they just can't compete with the 4 valve systems now.
but the older 5.0's are soo much more fun to drive
Yes but it all about weight !
I just picked up 82 gt t-top project great shape so excited . Great video gonna need lots parts from you lmr

Omg!!! I remember all of these Mustang Models, including the European cousin, Capri, Which, in America, it was a more luxurious version of the regular Mustang. Mercury Capri. I remember these cars when they were brand new, and, I'm not that old!
Ronald Green The '79-'86 Fox Capris weren't European. The '70-'78(?) Capri was made by Ford of Germany.
I believe 90-93 got slightly smaller wheel openings and 93 also got hypereutectic pistons
92 was a change over year, so some 92's also had the hyper-eutectic pistons as well. I believe I remember reading somewhere that the oil pan on a 92 with forged pistons was different from one with hyper-eutectic. (Different color I think)
drechsla '91-'93 had LARGER front wheel openings for the 16 inch "Pony" wheels.
@@devonnelson6865 Yep, the grey oil pan has forged pistons and black oil pan has cast hypers.
Would love a fox body ,not to many in Australia.
I took a different path in 87' and got a "GrandNational" my senior yr. of school. So Glad I Did,"It would Smoke the GT,IROC's,GTA's an Vette's," Bone Stock!!!"wasn't much of a race"
I hope you still have it!
The Grand National is another great American Car from the 80's! But this is about the Fox...
... Too bad you didn't have a GNX ;)
@@104thDIVTimberwolf 78,xxx on the gn, and wouldn't take a new GT,SS or Vette for it today,also have a 02'ram air H-6sp.Ttop 32,xxx mile car, both 1 owner! car's

Just gonna throw this out there it's been awhile living in my Mustang life but time to get back at it.... Great videos.... I have a1983 mustang GLX Convertible... 5.0..5spd Manual.... White exterior black stripe up hood... With hood scoop...Interior all black....78,000 Original miles... Only thing not original are the rims.... Was told came factory with hubcaps. Years ago when I was researching I could not find one like this... Was told by the car dealer that the guy that owned it before me ordered it out... I'm thinking I might have 1 of 1.... Open for any comments... Craig R. Olson
Are you saying it came with a hood scoop from the factory?
Yes... It's not a shaker... It's the ...what I call ...Reverse Cowell inducted but not an active one.Sorry for the lack of term.
Cheers just what I was looking for! Subbed
A notch back is always been a favorite of mine, can see why the prices are so high.

Aw man!
There’s a ding on the edge of the trunk lid!
Owie!
It's an original survivor and it earned that ding lol
This has always been my dream car, I've owned 2 of them and during the build process, the mechanics royally scammed me bad. 2 fox's and roughly 40k
NEVER got to own one but l drove many of them 87 gt had much needed aero for high speed runs .AS FOR MY FAVS 79 pace car 85 SVO and 93 cobra :)
High speed runs? The car stock had 250 hp lol
This was such a hoot.... this was back when we thought 225 horsepower was WAAAYYY HIGH!!!!! A kid back then sez… "Dude...watchout… I'm packing 200 hp!!!!!!" A kid from today sez…. "Uhhhh… I'll see your 200 and raise you another 250!!!!!!"
Of all the successor mustangs I feel this generation was the one that most closely captured the spirit of the original. Similar body styles, multiple engines choices, etc. And they didn't need to design any stupid retro gimmicks to sell them either no fake brake cooling vents, no retro dash. It was its own design.
Chris McBurney What about the fake ducts on the '87-'93 GTs? Or the fake hood scoops on the '79-'83s (Cobra, Pace Car, GT, and non-SVO turbo 2.3)?
Hello Chris!
I agree. That is what makes the Fox Mustang so Iconic!
FoxFordCatGuy
I believe he was saying that the later model Mustangs had all the "gimmicks" but the Fox had its own design.
Awesome video, don’t forget the Air Force had mustang duty also chasing U2 aircraft down the runway.
You missed the baby LTD's and the wagons
Jay Simons Shows a pic and mentions the LTD II at 1:06.
@@foxfordcatguy2283 ok..ya got me there...But no wagons! Lol.
There were a ton of different makes on the fox chassis, the video didn't cover several.
Love my 841/2 gt
I miss the 83 hatchback I had when I was stationed in AZ. Only had a 3.8l in it, but it could keep up with damn near anything. Except the RX7's the Butter Bars were driving. Drove it from AZ to OH on leave many times. Then some idiot hit me head on doing some expensive damage. Had the choice to fix or total it out. I really made the wrong decision.
what year of rx7 are you talking about the early eighties one or the early ninties one?
Great stuff
You missed one; in 1980 they made a sprint model with the 3.3L, 200 circuit. Inline 6, mine had a white body with blue stripes, great car, would give the same year 5.0 L V-8 a run for the money, torquey, fuel efficient runner !!
'80-'81 Foxes didn't come with the 5.0, they had the 4.2/255 a destroked 302/5.0.
*that should be "255 is an under-bored 302" not "destroked." Same stroke as a 302 but smaller bore.
Best invention ever

I have a 79 fairmont I wish it was a 2 door
Hank Hill I’ve been lucky to have owned three two door boxtops. Well the current one is my third boxtop fairmont😁
I have a 1987 Lincoln Continental it was made on FOX platform I love it as parts are cheap and plentiful.
Great video, lots of info!
Thank you!
Subbed n liked! This channel rips
Brighton Michigan! My hometown.
A pretty good generalization. A little disappointed that the 82 year didn't have much focus though, being the reintroduction of the GT trim after so many years, and being the last year of the pace car front air dam.
Well done👏👏
