Yes, I hope the owner will keep me appraised of its state. Who knows, maybe if nothing gets done to it this year I could get back to it next year for him. Dunno, we'll see. I did offer to buy the unit off the owner (to finish repair in 2023) but he wants to persevere with it, a challenge I suppose. With not much else working it does sound very nice for music. BTW I just did a freq resp check on my ZX-7 and it is amazing: 40-14k +/- 2dB for test tape, and 40-22k +/-2dB for rec/PB cycle (Type2).😄
Unfortunately there will only be a couple of vids left for the 1000ZXL. I am running out of time. I have had the deck for over a year now. The 1000ZXL owner I'm sure would like to see it finished as would I but I MUST finish my ESL63s before April. I am collating what I have done to aid the next person who works on this. If I were to buy it off the owner I would continue work on it late next year, otherwise I'm done, sadly. It has been one fault after another. The next thing is the bias for recording, I'm close but still it evades me. The digital side of things seem totally recalcitrant. Most of the front knobs still don't do anything except for the tape/source knob. Changing all the ICs in the display pcbs didn't fix a thing, so maybe the actual FL display itself is faulty, can't say yet. It would be nice to have a good display to compare. Changing all the orange caps didn't fix one fault even though almost half of the oranges were faulty. ☹ The original cloud of capacitor innards that filled the deck I fear did a lot more damage than get it dirty. I fear that the only "easy" way is to simply replace every IC in the deck, costly but maybe not as costly as the time to fault trace. Anyway, back to my report.
That's a shame. I was watching for the first time, and you almost got there, and several times it didn't even seem you would get anywhere close. Hopefully, if they find someone else to take over the repair, they will provide you with a final update.
Yes I'd love to get back to the CR-7A but unfortunately time is escaping me. My r/h Quad1292 just failed on me last night. 3rd panel from top burst into flames, it was going so well until this. I have obligations to do a bit more to the 1000ZXL and finish repairing the ESLs (now 10 speakers). I MUST finish the ESLs within a few months as I am planning a long trip to the Isle of MAN and the USA for as many months as I can handle wearing a mask. I'd like to be away for the whole 2nd half of 2022, we'll see.
That is going to be a tough one getting the display and meters to start working again. Can't wait for that episode. Keep up the great work!
orange caps are always the second thing I would do after the Transport and mains caps

Hi Moggy!
Great videos! I am working on a 1000ZXL of my own, so watching your repair process closely. When will there be a part 17?

Great video, thanks. Any news the CR-7?
