    You can still get the castle look in your modem day house, same concept as a brick home except they use this process called stone shaping yes it’s more tedious build and does require an expert mason, to build but I’ve seen several nice homes built this way, some building contractors do offer it at a cost, of course, interior is still like a modern home, I’m guessing you could add a 3 story tower to the front corners of your home, and you got a modern day 21castle home, although I can’t imagine climbing three floors, HOA would probably make you demolish it.

      HOAs don't like castles, or any unorthodox homes for that matter. Most municipal governments prohibit them as well. When it comes to unique architecture, zoning boards and HOAs are party poopers!

    I'll go along with you as far as defense purposes are concerned. I do, however, disagree with you on this point: "Castles" continue to be built to this day! The difference is that whereas those built in late antiquity and the middle ages were 'sole proprietorships', ones erected since then are owned by partnerships or corporations - i.e. banks.

    • @scientchahming5
      @scientchahming5 2 года назад +1

    Um, no. Stone is an AMAZING insulator. I live in an old building which was originally built in 1865 or so. The walls are 2-feet thick fieldstone and when it's 90 dF outside, it's a cool 75 degrees inside, as long as I keep the windows closed during the day (and open them at night) I gave away my air conditioner; I never needed it. Likewise, in the winter, when the temperature drops outside, the rooms stay warm for at least a week before finally cooling a bit. But my heating bill is half what it was when I lived in a regular timber house. So I can say, without a doubt, stone walls make great insulation. Of course, if you have huge windows or 12-18 ft. ceilings -- which were common in castles -- that would change everything. But in and of themselves, stone walls are better than any other type of insulation.
    However, you're right about the difficulties in renovation with stone walls. But I would rather not renovate anyway. Course, someone could build a stone house. Just because it's stone doesn't make it a castle.
    BTW, have you ever heard of the Guedelon Medieval Castle project, in France? If not, you should look it up. It's fascinating. It's a 25-year project (I think they're almost done) in which a team of archeologists are building a full-size castle, just as it would have been built in the 14th century. They use only the tools and materials available from the period. It's quite stunning.
    I came upon this channel today via one of your Questions For Science videos found on the Dark Science channel. I was hoping you had added lots of content here. I have tons of questions about history. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you ever developed this channel very much. Too bad.
    Did you know there is no good channel or site on the internet for world history? I mean, beyond England, ancient Rome, and some on Egypt (mostly related to the pyramids). I suppose there's stuff on the United States but I'm pretty familiar with that. Oh, and I found one video on Russian history but, according to that video, Russia is actually not that old; as a country, I mean. I'll keep looking. I want to learn as much as I can about world history, all the major countries, not only in Europe but Asia, Africa and South America, too.
    BTW, I wonder when Rome became Italy and how? What is its history?
    Also, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany Norway, Finland, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain... Not to mention the Slavic countries. I could go on. I should think the history of the Middle-East (what isn't covered under Greek or Roman rule) would be interesting. And, of course, India and the surrounding nations.... I could on and on.

    3:15 I have to disagree. If the walls are thick, rooms will always be cool inside if they are not pointed towards sun.

    • @TheBaileyandashlyn
      @TheBaileyandashlyn Год назад

      How thick are you talking, because I live in a home with about half a meter thick walls, with the room not facing the sun and i am currently melting everyday if i don't turn on the ac.

    • @mdjey2
      @mdjey2 Год назад

      @@TheBaileyandashlyn Ok, it will probably depend on how long ambient temperature is hot outside, since brick walls are like heatsink. I had 60cm old brick walls, no direct sun in Latvia and room temperature barely ever passed 26 degrees Celsius. I used to live without refrigerator and food stayed fine. Now I live in khrushchyovka and currently have 27 degrees in the end of June, though I get both sides now and I also use curtains which I didn't in old brick house since it wasn't needed. Maybe burnt clay bricks have somewhat better thermal properties than calcium silicate bricks. Of course insulation will improve room temperature. There are available large clay bricks with holes for better insulation. We call them Keraterm. With that said in some documentary archaeologists or inspectors found out, that large castle wall in the middle doesn't dry out completely. Also many interesting properties with Roman concrete. So there is more to equation than just simple brick. Trees also control temperatures in the city. If you have barely any trees, it will be disaster.

    I’m here because my truck got broken into, my neighbours camera system and my camera system both went dark when a black car pulled up at 10:26 in front my house and my neighbours across the street and a guy hopped out all in black, cameras went dark. Truck got broken into. My friends car has now been broken into 6 times because of new tech that thieves use to open car doors and my neighbours house 2 doors down got broken into and ransacked, smashed a bunch of things and stole things. So here I am trying to build a castle. Bring back the star forts and castle walls. Thinking about hiring a security guard just to sit and watch, if cameras can now be hacked using idk. Some new tech. A good pair of eyes can’t be backed.
