History of the Road
Sorry about the SUPER late video. I've been really busy with Questions for Science, plus the research on this took FOREVER.
Hope to upload more frequently in the future. Until I get a system down, uploads will be sporadic. Thanks for sticking around!

The Worst Trade in History
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
People make bad decisions all the time. However, in this case, a simple decision to trade one piece of land for another turned out to be devastatingly bad for one party and great for the other. Support my work on www.patreon.com/qfhpatreon
How pepper started the spice race

It was the rediscovery of pepper in Europe that lead to European interest on the conquest of spices. See how it all started support me on patreon: www.patreon.com/qfhpatreon check out my other videos: Why don't we build castles anymore? ruclips.net/video/5DZ4KmZDwts/видео.html When was the first human burial? ruclips.net/video/nXZSm0PqJHw/видео.html

Sir, Christopher Columbus did not discover or set foot in North America. I was also indoctrinated with this misinformation when I was in grade school.
1:30 no doubt animal paths would have been somewhat utilized by early nomadic peoples. So saying there weren’t any dirt paths would be incorrect.
Hey this is a really awesome video. Can I ask for a list of your sources? Specifically the ones before the Egypt section? I am researchig this concept for school. Thank you
Love the internet Shaq reference
What? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤐🤐🤐
We already know Neanderthals were capable of abstract thought.
If you can’t bury your dead or carry out a funeral, in my mind, that person is not human. Especially for your own wife or mother
8:42. The Scientific Rave-olution
Liberia, in West Africa was known as the Grain Coast/Pepper Coast because of the pepper grains plentiful there known as the meleguatta pepper aka grains of paradise.
The spice must flow
cant believe I only a few days ago found out about this channel of yours. wish you had continued it cause shit's interesting AS FUCK!
Has seen in the american revolution? Lmao yeah that was the ONLY place where star fortress were used, sureeeee...
Now please explain why English houses are built with brick?
@3:58 a vast part of Iberrian Peninsula(modern Spain and Portugal) is occupied by Islam,The Spice trade pretty much made European become superpower.
Um, no. Stone is an AMAZING insulator. I live in an old building which was originally built in 1865 or so. The walls are 2-feet thick fieldstone and when it's 90 dF outside, it's a cool 75 degrees inside, as long as I keep the windows closed during the day (and open them at night) I gave away my air conditioner; I never needed it. Likewise, in the winter, when the temperature drops outside, the rooms stay warm for at least a week before finally cooling a bit. But my heating bill is half what it was when I lived in a regular timber house. So I can say, without a doubt, stone walls make great insulation. Of course, if you have huge windows or 12-18 ft. ceilings -- which were common in castles -- that would change everything. But in and of themselves, stone walls are better than any other type of insulation. However, you're right about the difficulties in renovation with stone walls. But I would rather not renovate anyway. Course, someone could build a stone house. Just because it's stone doesn't make it a castle. BTW, have you ever heard of the Guedelon Medieval Castle project, in France? If not, you should look it up. It's fascinating. It's a 25-year project (I think they're almost done) in which a team of archeologists are building a full-size castle, just as it would have been built in the 14th century. They use only the tools and materials available from the period. It's quite stunning. I came upon this channel today via one of your Questions For Science videos found on the Dark Science channel. I was hoping you had added lots of content here. I have tons of questions about history. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you ever developed this channel very much. Too bad. Did you know there is no good channel or site on the internet for world history? I mean, beyond England, ancient Rome, and some on Egypt (mostly related to the pyramids). I suppose there's stuff on the United States but I'm pretty familiar with that. Oh, and I found one video on Russian history but, according to that video, Russia is actually not that old; as a country, I mean. I'll keep looking. I want to learn as much as I can about world history, all the major countries, not only in Europe but Asia, Africa and South America, too. BTW, I wonder when Rome became Italy and how? What is its history? Also, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany Norway, Finland, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain... Not to mention the Slavic countries. I could go on. I should think the history of the Middle-East (what isn't covered under Greek or Roman rule) would be interesting. And, of course, India and the surrounding nations.... I could on and on.
I don't know but I prefer regular pepper powder
The channel definitely went away.
There literally thousands of things on Wikipedia. That doesn’t mean they are was fantastic.
Uh egypt africa and all those places were originally rainforests sue
First ever tarred road on 8th century bhagdad..wonder who were those people
And amazingly the map you showed had Palestine and no Israel..amazing
Map does not show borders
at the end you actually described man made asphalt. man made asphalt is a mixture of petroleum and gravel natural asphalt is limestone rock impregnated with bitumen
I know that alot of roads in America came about from old Native American trails. Those trails were eventually made wider for horse and wagons. Then eventually became paved roads. So if you ever wonder why so many rural back roads are like they are. Its probably due to it originally being a hiking path.
The worst trade in history is giving up your eternal salvation for cheap and temporary pleasure.
What about houses that look like castles, we should built those instead :D
The road started as a dirt track and it was a gravel in 6,000 BC and it became asphalt in 1830 🪨🪨🪨➡🛣
Which ancient culture was the first to use pepper? Greece or Rome? Neither. It was India. This is like asking which country reached space first? India or China? Neither. It was USSR.
You put Polish castle in Bedzin in your video. It is very impressive. Greetings from Poland. 😊😊
Fr Idk y I just thought of this!?!?!
Incredible stuff :) Thank you so much for making this. And being this entertaining. Pls make more! Loyal subber
I thought it was pronounced Greek-o, not Grecko. Isn't it referring to Greece? If not, why?
I’m here because my truck got broken into, my neighbours camera system and my camera system both went dark when a black car pulled up at 10:26 in front my house and my neighbours across the street and a guy hopped out all in black, cameras went dark. Truck got broken into. My friends car has now been broken into 6 times because of new tech that thieves use to open car doors and my neighbours house 2 doors down got broken into and ransacked, smashed a bunch of things and stole things. So here I am trying to build a castle. Bring back the star forts and castle walls. Thinking about hiring a security guard just to sit and watch, if cameras can now be hacked using idk. Some new tech. A good pair of eyes can’t be backed.
Castles were basically nothing more than medieval military bases.
cool, how come vikings attacked?
Do upload something
I don't build Castles any more because the 3rd one burned down, fell over, and sank into the swamp, but the 4th one remains strong

Europe after finding a route to India: We are going to be f**king rich India after getting found by Europe: This is not going to end well for me
Great video. My only issue is the "woman" joke as I would have like to have used it in an educational setting but the joke makes it inappropriate for a younger audience
*proceeds to build a château *
Thanks for the information, i am planning a history essay on roads and this helps start up and understand where to start looking for sources, my apreciations again. i understand it has been exactly 7 months since you posted this, but can you details some sources that helped you make this video?
