Monroe refused: “Oh, the calendar’s hanging in all garages all over town. Why deny it? You can get one any place. Besides, I’m not ashamed of it. I’ve done nothing wrong.” But the outfit in the musical number was changed to something a bit less provocative. (And, in the end, the public was actually quite sympathetic to Monroe’s situation and she became 20th Century Fox’s biggest box office attraction.) And, incidentally, her last interview with _Life_ magazine (published 17 August 1962, less than two weeks after her death), Monroe said, “I remember when I got the part in _Gentlemen Prefer Blondes._ Jane Russell-she was the brunette in it and I was the blonde. She got $200,000 for it, and I got my $500 a week, but that to me was, you know, considerable. She, by the way, was quite wonderful to me. The only thing was I couldn't get a dressing room.”
