    Been using Linux for some time, don't need instructions on how to install Arch, but it was still a very enjoyable video and ended up watching it till the end. Very good explanation and dead simple to follow, one of the best tutorials for a first time Arch user.

      @@slimkid0225 you never know what tidbits you might pick up. Also, I watched in part because I'm evaluating which videos to share with someone else who I know is in the process of selecting a distro, and so, this is research for me for helping them. So yeah, I'm in the same boat as Luka... Then again, I'm also kinda considering giving Arch a try now, so there's that, as well. :D

    Okay, that last command is "nmtui." I couldn't figure that out for the life of me but searching got me what I needed.
    I need to do a better job paying attention to what you typed too... it's ..."wheel,users" *not* "wheels" and not with a "." After having screwed this up but continuing with GRUB configuration, I was able to boot as root and then use "usermod" to correct it.
    I had some hiccups but this was by far the easiest guide for installing Arch I've seen. I started watching part 2 this morning.

    Just such a nice tutorial, especially about the part regarding the Linux file system. When I firstly stepped into Linux 3 years ago, it takes me months to understand how the file system works, how terminal works. I am pretty dumb to figure out things, even a simple cd, mkdir command took me many days to figure out what are they and what they do. If you are watching this video as a newbie, DO NOT get frustrated, you will eventually get there if you watch this type of tutorial repeatedly and practice it yourself. First time it took 2 months for me to install Arch manually, second time it took me 1 whole day, the third time it took me 20 minutes, now I can speed run it in a few minutes lol.

    I’m new to Linux and running different distros via VM to see what I’ll switch to when windows 10 finally kicks the bucket. Your explanation for each step gave me a much better understanding of why I was doing each step compared to when I followed the manual. Thank you for taking the time to create and post this. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from it and look forward to future videos.

    Just want to say a big thank you for your two videos on this subject, been using Arch for a couple of weeks and cheated by using the archinstall script but thanks to you I've successfully installed it without the script and got it working exactly how I want it. I did a few things differently to you in that I set it up as an EFI system, I am using swap on zram rather than a disk partition, I've enabled periodic TRIM because I'm running SSDs and I've set up my desktop to run on Wayland. Largely due to the HDR support that isn't there in X11. I also enabled the CachyOS repos so I can get access to their recompilations of Arch packages that make user of newer instruction sets, as well as their kernel which is a big performance boost over vanilla Linux or even Zen. Very happy Arch (btw) user here.

    Great video, thank you for this.
    I've been using Linux exclusively for a few months now, but that is mostly with Ubuntu or Mint, and I am just starting to play with Arch on an old laptop to learn more.
    The guide was perfect, so easy to follow, and the explanations helped a lot on some things I wasn't sure of.
    Just one small point, I'm not sure if I missed something in the guide, but when following along using an EFI system partition, I got an error when setting up GRUB using the command grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=GRUB
    'grub-install: error: efibootmgr: not found arch install'
    I had to install the efibootmgr through pacman then it worked fine.
    Again, I may have missed it, and just wanted to say in case anyone else ran in to the same issue.
    Subscribed and will be following and watching more, thanks again

    I think you would do an excellent job making a video on how to set Arch Linux up for gaming. Show people how to install things like bottles since you have to do a little more to get that working, other dependencies to DL etc. I know there's videos out there that run through a lot of things but they don't help you understand things the way you do. And that makes you special because you have the natural ability to teach, thats a gift
    Also, i think most new people mess up because they try to update so much making it less stable

    Regarding the dual-boot setup on UEFI system in the description:
    I disagree with not creating new ESP partition. Many people say that system shouldn't have more than 1 ESP because of UEFI specifications, but in practice I didn't find any people (including myself) which had problem with having more than 1 ESP.
    Having multiple ESPs for every OS is in my opinion more clear and easier to look at (especially if you label them). But the biggest thing is that when you dual-boot Windows with some Linux distribution, Windows can (and probably sooner or later will) nuke Linux bootloaders. You can find many people on the internet which experienced such a bullshit.

    Hey, great video, im about half way through, just a simple point of criticism, try and keep the terminal where you type the commands a little higher because the youtube scrollbar at the bottom tends to cover it and seeing what you type is a pain at that point, having to wait for it to disappear.

    good video. couple things i noticed. the disk you are using had a gpt partition table and you want to use a "bios" install? you should have made it mbr/msdos disk. also really no need for that 2mb "bios" partition. you dont need a partition like that for a bios install, only for uefi. your grub-install command installed the code to the mbr before the first partition. that's why you use /dev/sda in the install command and not /dev/sda1. but maybe since you made this a gpt disk you needed to do it that way?? also, why even continue to use the "bios" method anymore these days? does you laptop not support uefi boot?

      @BreadOnPenguins  25 дней назад +1

      For a BIOS install, it's not strictly necessary, but it's good practice and GRUB prefers it.
      For a UEFI install, a separate EFI partition is needed with the ESP flag.

    Having the need to make a nearly 50 minute tutorial on how to use Linux, and yet, with Windows I learnt it in about 10 minutes (if that,) puts me more and more off Linux. Plus the fact that I have almost nothing on my PC that I use that works under Linux. I am too old to be learning another operating system. I was alive before even DOS 1 was a thing, so I have gone through all my share of learning (though DOS was a thousand times easier to use than Linux.) Yes I have tried multiple versions of Linux (Red Hat, Fedora, Mint. Unbuntu, Xubuntu, etc.) and all of them have one massive flaw for me, THEY ARE NOT EASY TO USE! The CLI is a nightmare and, in 2024 should not need to be a thing. Get me a Linux distro that can 100% be used without the CLI and I will give it another try. But, apart from that Windows is my perfect operating system.

    • @BreadOnPenguins
      @BreadOnPenguins  27 дней назад +1

      That's understandable - from the point of view you're sharing, I agree.
      Arch, in particular, is meant for people who want to DIY every aspect of their system, so of course it will involve significant time in the shell. Arguably Linux as a whole is DIY - it requires learning.
      It's just a question of whether you want to learn something new in exchange for the differences and benefits it offers (& if those benefits matter to you), or not.
      If Windows is perfect for you, I'd be the last person to tell you to switch :-)

    • @therealyogibear2k225
      @therealyogibear2k225 27 дней назад +1

      @BreadOnPenguins Yes, horses for courses I guess. For fun I am learning BBC basic and ZX Spectrum basic for no other reason than something to do and for nostalgia. But I am taking it very slowly. I don't need to learn anything anymore to be beneficial for me. I am very lucky that that ship has long sailed. But I do wish you good luck with Arch. I hope I didn't sound facetious. It wasn't my intention.
