The best unique storyline in this movie is Billy's fear of aging out of the foster system and losing his parents. It's probably the only superhero movie that can tackle this topic, and they set it up well in the first and second act, but didn't carry it through fully into the third act. If they centered the film around this emotional core, it could have been great and would stand out from every other movie. Such a missed opportunity.

i agree, there needed to be way more focus on the family dynamic rather than the kids as heroes. They should be kids first, because thats what we relate to. Like in spiderman, you relate to peter’s struggles, not Spiderman’s.
they needed to focus more on the dynamic of the kids interacting with one another rather than them as a hero team.
I think the ageing out point was only mentioned once before the end where billy says it to rosa. Which is weak af. It could have been so good if it was
focused on more, especially after the first movie where he didnt want to accept a new family. To now subtly want it more than ever couldve been so damn powerful.

I don't trust these writers to accomplish that well had it been a goal. I grew up in foster care and now work in child welfare, and this movie is to being in foster care what Googling your symptoms is to being a doctor. It's a candy coated version at best, and ignorant of reality. The foster parents having an expectation of being called Mom and Dad, and that being used as some sign of Billy's own personal growth is offensive. There are major issues with that in real life. That's a case conference with foster parents, kids, and workers at a minimum. As an industry, we don't even call them foster parents anymore, they're caregivers because it's not our place to designate these volunteers as a child's "new parents." That's the child's journey to go on - or not - and not the caregivers expectation to have.

I'd imagine that once Billy becomes into Bill, the main conflict with Shazam would be the power fantasy

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh Год назад +18

the charm of Captain Marvel is that he is a literal 10 year old kid with the innocence that the wizard Shazam needed to find for his champion. Others like Mary and Freddy are supposed to have the age-related problems, Billy is still a wide eyed child. One who once changed Black Adam's magic word to his favorite ice cream sundae.
In the movie Billy is a hormonal, angsty 17 year old kid, alongside Freddy. We suddenly have a dual lead we didn't want. Mary has aged out of the home and is supposed to be starting out at college and starting not to relate to the other kids as she is an adult. The "mid kids" are completely wasted in the movie, with nerd and sparkly little girl cliches that repeat. The little girl with the Skittles is super annoying.
It would have been interesting if most of the family gave Billy their powers so he could fight the Hesperides, leading us to have one Shazam.

The easy fix to this movie: Billy is too busy 'Adulting' to BE Shazam, or spend time with his family. The opening rescue, "Where's Shazam, we could really use him." Cut to Billy working generic register. Have Billy/Shazam taking part briefly, at a rapid pace so he's NOT catching on to easy points like An...thea. End of movie he realizes family is more important and he shows. It would make the villains apprehension of Shazam seem legit. He hasn't shown up yet, so they believe he'll ONLY show if his family can't handle it. That would make all their plans to slowly take out the others a strategy out of fear.

Uh... Counterpoint: I LIKE that they show Heroes being actual Heroes. I sort of wanted the Marvel Movies to show Spiderman do more ground level crime stuff, because he's the "Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman." We don't get many of those kinds of heroes on the big screen. Like if Daredevil or the Defenders ever truly escaped to the Big Screen, having Kingpin's crime organization would be interesting as hell to watch. No world ending calamity. No grand city shattering thing. Just stopping thugs from pushing drugs onto kids and robbing banks. If you need that big final fight and aren't comfy making Kingpin the super brawler he is, bring in Taskmaster as his hired help.
There's a fine line in Cinema, where sometimes you have to explain things, and sometimes you want to not explain things. "We don't see her work" "We don't see this Rent thing." Yeah, but we are humans who KNOW what Work and Rent is. And as per Hitchcock said, "Drama is life with the boring parts cut out." Shazam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods are Billy Batson's Movies, they should only really show the rest of the cast doing things when they are plot relevant. Us following along to dead end jobs is, at the end of the day, bloat. Yes it provides more context, but we as a society should already have the context on what a Job and Bills are. They give us the bare minimum of interaction between two characters to set up a token relationship, but it's still not their movie. This movie really should've been a TV Series in order to hit all the points right spots properly, but as a Movie, it did a half decent job.
And yes, the jokes fall flat. If you haven't noticed, Billy Batson is supposed to be a Kid. Not every kid is funny. According to a DC Comics wikipage, he's funny enough to have 2,000 subscribers. So... he's at least or at best 0.2% as charismatic as you are? And yeah, when he jokes, the Jokes don't land. They fall flat. Like a Kid. he makes Pop Culture References that no one cares about, and makes jokes he'll laugh at but no one else gets. Hell, I hate to bemoan a point, but in two very highly regarded movies, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Peter Parker, a quick mouthed funny man, makes pop culture references that he's not the age demographic for. It's kinda what young people do, try to connect with others using easily understood media. You can't fault the movie for characterization. And the Fast and Furious Reference he made in the movie absolutely falls flat, because the people he's making the reference to don't get the reference. Same with telling a Bad Joke and no one laughed. That's the Joke.

I think if people going to the movies were unaware of it, there's just too many factors against it:
      - If like the actor said, to watch a family-friendly movie; why not just go watch the Super Mario Bros. Movie? As generic as that movie is, it will attract more people just by the name alone. Or if it's still up in that cinema, Puss in Boots 2?
      - If a group just wants something more fun to watch, without the family friend restriction, then why would they watch this, when JW4 is out there?
      - People are tired of bad superhero movies. Eventhough the movie might or might not have been bad (it's just okay), people wouldn't be incitivised to watch it
      - With the last resort of the comic fans, they most likely wouldn't go either, because Shazam isn't that much popular either, and his famous villains one was on the first one (that the general public didn't even knew, but it was a fine movie), and the other refused to be a villain, and instead wanted their own solo movie. So what's left now?
imo, both Billy and Shazam's actors did alright in the first one, but not so much in the 2nd one (too much disonance that made them not be the same character),but still enjoyable.Unfortunately the movie was bound to fail regardless, because there were many internal and external factors against it.

I understand that the point of the review is to play up the plot holes in the film, but most of the claims here are sucked out of thin air. For example:
    1. The scene on the bridge is justified enough, it shows what the characters have learned, how they work together, shows the "style" of each team member in saving people.
    2. We didn't have to know that the third sister existed and was cheating on Freddie, did Filmento hear about the plot twists?
    3. The rooftop murder scene shows that there is one particular sister who loves to kill people - Calypso. By the end, it turns out that the other two are generally not villains. Such details are better noticed on the second viewing.
    4. The sisters do this not only because their power was stolen from them, but because their world is dead and they want to restore it with a seed.
    5. Grace Caroline Currey is so hot that I'm ready to forgive everything for this movie.

The fundamental problem is that they're not adapting the most popular version of the character. Geoff Johns' Shazam has its fans, but it never reached the popularity of the original comics from the 30s. With these kinds of adaptations, you should always go with the most popular version of the character and for Shazam that was back in the 30s. For an example of how to update the old stories for modern viewers, they only needed to check out Jeff Smith's "Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil". That would have worked out much better than what we got.

It feels like Shazam 2 is a solid movie that could've been great, especially if the deleted scenes were added along with a few other things.
    1. The daughters of Atlas should've had an origin scene like Sivana in the first film. Showcase the beauty of the realm of the gods before their powers are taken away, giving merit to the meeting with Hespera and the destruction in the finale from the tree of life. (Maybe it could've featured Black Adam if he wasn't played by Dwayne)
    2. Kalypso needed more solo screentime to make her a more impactful antagonist. She feels awfully reserved for a goddess of chaos, so more screentime would give her not only a greater presence but allow her true nature to shine through. (The Gatorade line stays)
    3. Exploring how Billy sees his Shazam form. Billy being immature in his adult form is the point of the character, as seen in both the first film and in Shazam/Captain Marvel's many cartoon appearances. Billy uses Shazam to escape from his childhood and enjoy the things a kid his age normally would, which would obviously get messed up when villains like the DoA show up and spoil his fun. Every adult complains about how much they want to be a kid again anyway, so Billy's immaturity fits with the message of growing up.
    4. Give the other kids more to do. Darla, Eugene, and Pedro each get one thing (Darla gets unicorns, Eugene gets the doors, and Pedro is in the closet) but they don't go anywhere after those things serve their purpose in the plot, making all of them feel flat. Freddy and Mary are more fleshed out, but they could also go further.
I still had a lot of fun with this movie, especially with all the references to the Shazam mythos, but it could've been just as great as the first one.

I don't think Shazam FOTG was bad, but I will say that it had a lot of flaws. It had some good bones, like Billy going from a loner with nothing to kid who can't let go of the place he found. A bit too many contrivances, some poor pacing in the final act, and I would have loved to see more of Billy the kid in the movie.

I read an article on MovieWeb recently about the current state of film, and I have to agree with its take: movies these days, particularly the "spectacle" movies like the superhero genre, are increasingly less about story, characters and themes, and more about "moments." It's less about teaching us things or getting us to think about life in a new way, and more about giving us shallow, pandering things that people will imitate on TikTok or create "That moment when" memes from. Makes some sense from a marketing standpoint, but it's also tragic that we're losing the genuine art behind it all. That's why these first-draft jokes and plot twists, I'd wager, are so popular these days. They're the low-hanging fruit, but our attention spans are now so criminally short that nobody cares anymore. They put butts in seats and people will meme the hell out of them anyway.
One would think with so much on the line and film budgets so outrageously enormous, skill and experience would be the two things directors and writers are hired for. Instead, it seems to be who can create the most catchy "moments," regardless of how little they actually make sense or what important perspectives they might show us.

Honestly, I quite liked this film at least more than Black Adam (2022) or Quantumania (which I thought was okay) as the characters, family dynamic and light tone was really enjoyable and just a fun time, despite an overall not-too-captivating or innovative story. I think one of the biggest things that could've saved this film was including Black Adam as the main villain as he was originally going to be, at least until The Rock wanted the character to be more of bigger character than the character had any right to be, which may have been the result of the Rock's ego, but I don't want to dive too deep into anything negative surrounding The Rock who I genuinely do love. I just think that given The Rock's star power, ego and deep need in making Black Adam less of a Shazam villain and more of a Superman villain wasn't the best idea to bank on, especially for the success of Shazam: Fury of the Gods in a state where the entire DCEU is going to be remade under the creative, innovative direction of James Gunn.
Not to mention that *Shazam and Black Adam are arch-enemies*. I don't know if The Rock wasn't okay with playing a bad guy, which he already has in the movie Doom (2005), and in The Mummy: The Scorpion King. Maybe he had a public image to maintain in most of his movies, but regardless I think not having Shazam confront Black Adam was a massive missed opportunity we may not see for at least over a decade, given that we may not see most of these specific takes on the Shazam characters again.

i agree it was kind of generic. To me, what would fix this movie is if they focused more on the team as a family rather than a superhero team. Like they didnt really feel like kids, and Billy seemed to have too many things figured out for a 17yr old.
I disagree with your point about the bridge collapse tho because it introduces you to the characters early on and shows their new dynamic. The bridge collapsing is supposed to be slapstick light hearted “theyre just kids” comedy.
I do agree that some of the events do just unfold after this scene tho, the villains werent very strong in the movie.
I think they just needed to focus on the family as a family more, especially since that was such a strong theme in the first one - and it was great in the first one. Also wouldve made the reveal to the parents stronger towards the end of the film.
For me it was a good enough movie tho because I like the cast and i like the characters. It couldve been better for sure, but ultimately its an enjoyable watch. I dont want DC to just end these characters like theyre doing with batman and henry cavill. What they have with shazam is really good and that NEEDS to be acknowledged

It wasn't him being unavailable. He didn't want his character Black Adam to be in the film. He wanted to reserve Black Adam for fighting Superman and wanted no part of the Shazam franchise. Plus, DC announcing that they were scrapping their entire series of films just before this came out definitely did not help. Unfortunately, there isn't really a point in seeing a superhero movie that sets up sequels when you know they aren't coming because none of it matters now.

So late to the party and some thoughts:
Maybe 7% of this movie was character development. The remaining seemingly endless CGI fights served almost no ultimate purpose with anything. The bad girls have almost no character or personality. There literally is a good 40 minutes of CGI monsters appearing, attacking, pushing the data cloud budget to the limit.
And the thing that I hated the most is Zach Levi didn’t modulate his performance AT ALL from however many years ago. Billy bats was supposed to be 18. Shazam acted 12. At no point did I believe this was the adult version of Billy.
I kind of liked the first movie and this was almost Wonder Woman 1984 depths
