I'm working for amazon right now and I have a similar experience, I've been full stack for 7 years but I've been working mostly on the front end and I love that, but when I arrived at amazon my team was more backend focused and I just couldn't find my way to start working, after 3 months I thought I was going to be fired but my manager and my team were amazing, always there to help, always encouraging me to take it easy and not get overwhelmed. After that a new team was created and I was asked if I wanted to move to that team since it was going to be more front end focused and was going to be completely new. I said yes and now I feel like I'm starting to gain traction and working in something that I like.
My new manager is amazing as well, super fun dude with amazing attitude and always there to help, I only have one other teammate right now but he is also amazing, so I'm so glad that I'm here.

At Amazon it is gambling I had a manager who was absolutely terrible at giving projects that he promised in first 2 months and criticizing how to format things in quip docs

Heads up you should try changing your camera’s shutter rate to stop your background’s LED lights from flickering on the video

Either that, or just remove the LED lights completely.

Actually there is a plugin that works pretty well to remove the flicker. Best part is free and quick to implement.

after my mom passed I was working across the country, i changed careers into CS for several reasons, one was to spend some years with my dad.
i'll add- it couldn't have been better. Done things with my dad i'd have missed out on for sure, and helped him in numerous ways.
If you have the luxury, spend time with your parents, once they're gone, that's it.

Good video. Sorry to hear about the family issues. 99% of my work decisions usually are made in accordance with my family as well, it gives me peace of mind.
I also wanted to say the comparison to your grandpa was spot on too. My grandparents lived through the great depression and WW2 and I feel like not much can be worse than that, so I should try to suck it up before crying over spilled milk.

    Hi can you solve this
You are given two passages of text that have been scanned and passed through OCR software. (OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, which is the conversion of printed text into machine-readable strings.) Unfortunately, the scans were of poor quality and some letters were not recognized by the OCR software. Write a program to check (based on the output from the OCR software) whether the two text sources might in fact be the same. We assume that each text passage consists only of English letters. The OCR output from each scan is given as a string in which unrecognized letters are marked as follows. Firstly, let us mark each unrecognized letter by "?". For example, if the OCR software didn't recognize the second and third letters of the text "Apple", it would result in OCR output of "A??Le". Then, for brevity, every group of K consecutive "?" characters is replaced by the decimal representation of integer K (without leading zeros). Thus, the above OCR result would be represented as "A2Le". (For the sake of clarity, such numeric replacement is performed on groups of "?" characters that cannot be extended either to the left or to the right.) You are given two strings S and T consisting of N and M characters, respectively, and you would like to check whether they might have been obtained as OCR scans of the sam text. For example, both strings "A2Le" and "2pL1" could have been obtained as scans of the word "Apple" (but also as scans of the word "AmpLe“). Both strings "a10" and "102" could have been obtained as scans of the word "abbbbbbbbba" (but also from many other strings of length 11, starting and ending with "a"). On the other hand, strings "bal" and "1Ad" could not have been obtained from the same text, since the second letter of each text is different. Write a function: class Solution { public boolean solution(String S, String T); } that, given two strings S and T consisting of N and M characters, respectively, determines whether strings S and T can be obtained as OCR output from the same text. For example, given "A2Le" and "2pL1", your function should return true, as explained above. Given "a10" and "10a", your function should return true, as explained above. Given "bal" and "1Ad", your function should return false, as explained above. Given "3x2x" and "8", your function should return false, since they represent strings of different length. Assume that: • N and M are integers within the range [1..100,000); • lengths of texts before the OCR process are integers within the range [1..100,000); • strings S and T consist only of alphanumerical characters (a-z and/or A-Z and/or 0-9); • strings S and T contain neither single zeros (e.q. "abc@abc") nor integers with leading zeros (e.g. "abc@12abc").

Hey, I know this comment is a bit late. But thank you for sharing your story and I am sorry for your loss. Your grandfather sounds like he was an amazing and brave person.
I respect your insight on things and I really appreciate hearing about your experience at Amazon. Amazon has contacted me several times, but I heard stories about there being a lack of mentorship and them tossing out new college grads in the first 3-6 months. As someone looking for somewhere where I could learn and grow that didn't really appeal to me. However the environment you described really does. Thank you for being so humble and sharing your experience. I will definitely put on my interview prep boots and give it a shot in afew months.

Wait Kevin I'm still confused: why did your video title have "PIP" in the title when you weren't actually pipped? I mean, no judgment, but isn't that kind of lying?
I'm more just curious about your thought process when you wrote "Pipped" when you weren't in fact pipped. Like what was your motivation for writing that when it wasn't true?

Sorry for your loss, Vietnam was a very damaging war in many ways. It had a profound effect on many lives and I really hope people stop from time to time and revisit the past so that we don't have to repeat some of the mistakes made. Sadly, it looks like we as a nation have forgotten many of the lessons of the past.
Overall, there is a big star in this news, you got a hard to get job and excelled at it and you have some more, all important YOE on the resume.
