After listening to your review of this disc I bought the set. I started seeing Zappa live in 72 with the Wazoo Orchestra. When this band came out I (and my band mates) made our way to as many of their concerts as possible. THIS is so truly representative of what we experienced from those musicians. So so satisfying. I am delighted that you finally turned on to Ralph Humphrey. Great and insightful comments on what happens on this disc. Seeing and hearing these Zappa bands 72-74 really changed my trajectory as a musician and a performing artist. Kinda gets wrapped into one's DNA. Appreciate what you do here.
I couldn’t agree more about the live stuff on this set. It seems to be less about Frank controlling the band so much, and more about organic interaction. Roxylicious
Makes you wonder why so many average posthumous releases got released and this stuff stayed in the vaults. Road tapes 2, Hot Rats box set and the Roxy Tapes are the peal vault stuff in my opinion but this is really great stuff.
Completely agree with this review. I hope ZFT and Universal will release some day more 1973 live stuff, for instance the complete Australian concerts in june-july. This band and the Petit Wazoo are my all time favorites.
Agree 100%! This disc exceeded my expectations. Man, I wish Frank had kept the other reels, if they were recorded at all. I bet Fifty Fifty and RDNZL were killer....
As soon as I saw the announcement I thought, "man, shaggy is gonna rave about the 73 shows". Guess I was right. I've never dug deep into this era, but man, these are absolutely some of the best shows released officially. Shocking they hadn't done a JLP era show before this point. I guess I'll finally have to take a break from 78-82.
By the sounds of your description of this disc, I am beginning to think that the extra expense I laid out for the box set will be worth it. Been eagerly awaiting this video and have been checking constantly over the past two days to see if you uploaded it. My boxset is still in Elk Grove Village in Illinois according to my tracking from the Zappa store I do hope it arrives before Christmas lol.
Shaggy, seriously. Nominate your TEN favourite discs (only a max of one from any given posthumous album) and showcase them in an episode of your 'show' /commentary. It'll be intriguing for people who don't have all the releases, while the rest of us will be inspired to dig out and revisit the "single discs" in question which may have languished for a while due to the sheer quantity of stuff coming out. I'd nominate my 10. It'd be fun to select them.

Lovely. I'm about to listen to it now. So pleased you're coming round to the genius of Ralph Humphrey.

Take that break! And Road Tapes Venue 2 is a JLP show….and he is amazing on that release,
@theopinionatedhippie470 Totally forgot! I guess more specifically these are the first spring 73 shows. But man Don't You Ever Wash was a trip!
Wow thats some high praise! I finally got my copy. Made it through disc 1 and 2 last night. Looking forward to listening to the rest tonight.
Thats a bold statement that might be justified, it is superb.
