Having gotten the unique opportunity to perform this piece three times in three different venues in two different countries, I thank you for posting this with the score. I love RVW's treatment of the text. The mournful, almost surprised devastation of Babylon after the triumph of the army of God makes me feel like I'm on a battlefield as the smoke clears, counting bodies. Then the children almost chide the mourners, reminding them that Lord promised this. But then, the violin rises from the destruction to usher in the Holy City, and the promises to the righteous are revealed and it's just... so powerful. But the climax isn't at the end. The end is hesitant and hopeful, and it's clear this was just a vision of what could be, and not reality. It's a temptation, a glimpse at a perfect world, a goal, an ethereal dream that's as tenuous as the peace following WWI--precisely what was happening when he wrote this. RVW, you are a genius. Humanity doesn't deserve you.
i cancelled Sirius and subscribed to you tube, im unaffiliated, but it is wonderful..no interruptions and their machines compile playlists as you can for occasion..may want to free try it for a month..i think its wonderful
Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate. Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100! The use of digital technology accounts for 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, as much as the emissions from the world's truck fleet. Of that, a BIG part comes from livestreaming videos, mainly 3 sources : RUclips, Netflix and porn. Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible, doing our little part in decreasing our carbon footprint and protecting this wonderful planet for the generations to come.
I do not like VW`s choral music, save the Mass and Flos Campi. I think he was a much greater instrumental composer tan choral composer. This work is too "Hollywood" for me.
This is easily my favourite of all classical music, there is so much love in it. To me this is nothing like Hollywood. Its from the beautiful Surrey Hills of Great Britain.
Its actually hollywood music that is too much like rvw. His music influenced hollywood. Also, its more debussy than anything and if you dont like debussy i dont know what to do...
@@cobblestonegenerator Debussy had essentially no influence on him. He was Ravel's student, but Ravel only accepted him because he had no chance of copying Ravel's style. His style is based on English Choral and Folk music with a tad of Germanic and French influence on things like form and orchestration.
The music of Vaughn-Williams never fails to inspire me. I'm hearing this one for the first time. Another gem!

The violin solo rising from the ashes is so touching
Rochester Choral Society (Kent) is singing "Dona Nobis Pacem" on Saturday in Rochester Cathedral. What a remarkable piece!
Beautiful recording of one of my all-time favourite pieces. The climax at 23:57 gets me every time.
superbe musique
A masterpiece.
Fabulous.
Maravilloso!!!
WTF! Genius
This is a beautiful composition from which no doubt "Hodie," some nearly 30 years later, had its origins and inspiration.
How many composers are this immediately recognizable? Very few.
Theres a lot
Satan invented youtube ads! :(

Try U-block extension for Chrome
Firefox with the Ghostery extension works well for me.

Music is for the worship of God. Not Satan's empire and it's carbon religion.
@@tim-williamsAgreed.
God's creation is to be protected from the satanic evils of carbon that degrade God's holy work.
Seriously! Ads in the middle of the second choir. If you are going to place ads RUclips, at least have someone place them in an appropriate place.

The two chorales from "Hodie" will give you another perspective. And "Serenade to Music" . Wow.
