- Steve Christie talks about the Vintage Keys Hammond M102 that was bought many years ago from a man who claimed it came from Apple studio when it closed.
Peter Jackson’s new film ‘The Beatles Get Back’ shows an identical organ being used on the song ‘Let It Be’. Is this the very same instrument? Perhaps one day we will be able to prove it either way.
This M102’s serial number is 69536

You should do more videos of you playing stuff. I get copyright issues and all, but you are a really talented musician. Plus the sound of these vintage synths is pretty awesome.
Congratulations on that (highly probable) very special/unique M102! I guess this will turn out very interesting! The quest for the Hammond's origin: in theaters 2022, directed by Peter Jackson? One Hammond to rule them all ... ;-)!
Nice! Billy grew up playing gospel organ in church so he knew his way around it. Thanks for the video. It gave me chills.
Thank you for watching! :)
Nice playing. Love the ‘warble and wheeze’ of that organ (and Leslie combination). You should upload another vid, this time playing your version of the short little solo Billy P. did for ‘Long & Winding Road’ (that IIRC, we got a peek of when the ‘Anthology’ series aired).
We love your videos Steve ,and especially like the Zapperish song at the end of the video .
When in London I came across a Leslie speaker for £50... the auction house said it was from Abbey Road studio.... yeah right. Sold it to a guy 'up north'.. on ebay for £200 who said he worked with OMD. Yeah right.... 3 days later, 2 guys and a 40ft trailer came to pick it up, on the way back from OMDs European tour.
Hey man! Very nice video! This year i had the chance to put my hands on the Moog IIIP Synthesizer that George Harrison bought for himself (he used it on "Electronic Sound" and "Abbey Road") and sold it to Eberhard Schoener later on! I can feel your excitement all way through!!!! We were recreating the patches with the cables by looking at the photos taken at the Abbey Road recording sessions. It´s at the Deutsches Museum in Munich at the moment! Greetings from Vienna!
Thank you and that is amazing! I would love to see that! I must listen to ‘under the Mersey wall’ again
That M102 sounds wonderful, I bet it's the same Hammond used by Billy Preston! Hope someone could shed some more light about it.
The Hammond on the end of She's So Heavy, sounds like a C3 on full trottle to me.:)
I have a ‘67 M102 as well, A friend of mine met Billy Preston and asked about the vibrato he used on the M102, Billy said it was done by playing around with the vibrato normal / small switch and getting it to somewhere between the two settings.
Thanks Amanda that’s really cool! yes - that’s right - the midway setting sounds better than the normal ones. More of an undulating vibrato, like combining a tremolo and vibrato together :)
Thanks for the video! I also think that was a M102 or maybe the Lowrey DSO... But impossible to find the same sound.. Please help me 🙏😂
Nice video! You might very well have a piece of history there.
I hope its the one. Thanks for the great content.
Awesome 👌
What a sound ,sounds liké a cinéma organ !!!
it doesn't matter whether it is the actual instrument that Billy Preston played. The only thing that matters is that it could have been, and that it is a beutiful piece of craftsmanship and a wonderfull sounding instrument :)
Sounds great and very close to the original recording.
Thank you :)
It would be fun if you do a video of demonstrations of all your instruments!
That's what we are hoping to do!
LOVE THIS !!
Worth contacting the original manufacturer to see if Apple purchased this particular organ and on what date. It would also be useful to know if Apple only purchased one of these organs.
Great idea, thanks.
they went out of business in 1985
Wonderful sound! Congrats! Even if it isn't the exact same organ, A vintage tonewheel Hammond is always fantastic to have. I own a 1972 Hammond P-100 S, a "portable" L-100, which sounds very nice, but not as nice as the M series. You might look into that AC hum (I suppose it's the Hammond and Leslie, not sure though). Probably a ground loop. I had a similar problem, but a good sound engineer and Hammond tech got rid of it for me.
Cheers - yes it was the Leslie - needed a good service - all fine now
@@VintageKeysStudio Awesome! Wishing you lots of fun with your Hammond organ! Cheers!
Can you demonstrate the Weltmeister Claviset 200 (1960)?
I wonder how much it would be worth for die hard Beatles fans if it was confirmed this was in fact an original Apple studios Hammond organ.
Probably about ten thousand pounds or so.
amazing, it sounds like the on the beatles record, thats for sure. hope it is the hammond.
How does that tel ray work back there? I restored one a few years back. Super interesting sound.
It’s a beauty - we will do a video on it at some point - I am trying to install a wiggling arm on the wheel so it can sound like an ‘organ tone’ unit
M100s are cheap or free here in the states. I've had a couple in addition to almost every other model of "old" Hammonds. along with the T series, one of the best kept secrets in the Hammond world. with a Leslie, they can get 90% to the sound of their big B3 brothers at a fraction of the cost. a good value if you ask me.
I always feel proud to see a Philicorda cross the border :-)
Have you had a look for the leslie switch on the video. Yours is actually next to the manuals and not a half moon
As I explained in the video, this is a modification that I added
@@VintageKeysStudio sorry didn't hear that
A Whiter Shade of Pale was also played on a Hammond 102 but that was recorded in the Olympic Sound Studio.
There was a built in halfmoon leslie switch on the get back m102 , but your only has a switch
There was a half moon switch on this when I got it, but was removed a few years back when I was considering selling it. I put the new switch in last year
I also added a line out and a switch on the top left black panel with a dummy load / speaker cut off. In my experience, when hammonds and leslies are split up, the Leslie switches are taken off the organ and sold with the Leslie as they are all part of it. No Hammond of that era would have been sold with a Leslie switch attached as Laurens Hammond would have absolutely forbade it!
@@VintageKeysStudio yeah but some retailers put it on in the store, I have a m102 with two halfmon switches built in by the Hammond retailer
I’ve been looking for a nice M102, would you like to sell it?
This one isn't for sale I'm afraid. We hope you manage to find a good example.
I have a L102 Hammond
NOW get the Rhodes!
why not let roll the 16mill here in for us to see order and find out if it is indeed the one?
disney lawyers lol

@@RichardRoland thank you!
@@RichardRoland Awesome!
Have the keys dusted for Billy Preston DNA
Hahaha yes!
NOT AN HAMMOND, A LOWREY ORGAN at Twickenham sessions
And a Lowrey AND A Hammond at Apple sessions
I feel a little frustrated not to hear more
