also josh is 100% the kid on the playground that's playing pretend and his reaction to everything is "I dodge it"
Cotton wins all the rounds for sure. Josh is better at on-the-spot bullsh*tting, but he is still mainly bullsh*tting. Those big Fanged Beasts are still MASSIVE, and raptor sickle claws aren't anywhere near as effective against larger prey as one might think unless they get somewhere vital. Considering the sheer size and strength these burly bears have to be throwing around those lightning-rod-pangolins one-handed and how thick their skin and fur would be, the Palociraptor moving in close is a death sentence if the bear simply rolls around.
God I hope the raptor is called a Palociraptor that's such a good name
Just look at that bear. How is some weird chicken supposed to get through that thick fur and hide? Sure, bear won't catch it, but neither will it go down. Locked in a cage, bear wins. Easily. Chicken would outrun it in the wild.
I think the bear thing would win. Bears tend to have think muscles and fat, granted, due to the desert like enviorment, it might have less insilating fat. But it would still have the long coat of fur that could help shield its weak spots from the raptor's claws that may or may not exist.
If it IS a bear. The face is lion-like, and There was once a species if Desert Lion in Egypt... All that Bulk could simply be a Mane, colored for concealment in the sand, and these things could be lean, muscular hunters... plus, they have lizardlike Tails... so they could even be a New Brute Wyvern...
As for the Mount, It DOSENT really have Fighting/Hunting Talons, Cotton was right about that... it's got Runners Feet, and Climbing Talons... meaning yes, it's kick would pack QUITE a lot of force, but It's claws? Not really an issue.
It was plainly inspired by Semi-Airborne Prehistoric Reptiles, such as Archaeopteryx and Microraptor, with a bit of Deinonychus and Diametria. Also, it has an almost Rathalos/Rathian Face... so perhaps the mount is a flightless subspecies of Rathian... and customizable at Character Creation, like the Palamutes or Palicos....

Bear wins. Sorry, that is my hot take on this. Not even Ostriches would fight bears. Not even Emus. Not even Australian Emus would fight a bear. Especially if said bear is a grizzly or polar.
And, everything you described about the bird...had more to do with being controlled by the Hunter, than it had to do with the bird itself.
Further more, studies have shown that Lions actually do not have as much bite force as grizzly and polar bears.
The African Lion, for example, has a bite force of 650 psi, compared to the grizzly at 975 psi, which is still lower than the polar at 1200 psi. Now, if that cat/bear face was a mix of grizzly/polar and JAGUAR, that would be a different case, as jags have a bite force of 1500 psi.
Also, the fur of bears is VERY effective armor against small claws like our bird mount has.
Also, this is a comparison between the bird and bear, hunter is not included. That is not part of the debate. So, Josh loses all points for bringing the hunter into the equation.
So, science says, bear wins in combat.
Also, bear got bonus points because Josh bullied Cotton.
That aside...imagine a combination of polar bear and honey badge for a monster in Monster Hunter...you are now looking at the face of death itself.

A cassowary CAN AND WILL Fight a bear, and they often win. This is a bird that, while close to the size of a turkey, is fierce and strong enough to drive away even Komodo Dragons(which could and would eat a bear)
Just look up Animal Attacks (with casualties) and you'll see that bears are nothing compared to those murder chickens... hell, iirc, Cassowaries have a higher HUMAN kill count Than Bears, Wolves, and Sharks Combined... worse still, they are endangered, so you can't even fight back, killing them is a crime.
And An Ostritch, if given no escape, WOULD fight a bear... And they kick hard enough to dent 6MM thick Steel plates...
Emus... they would run, but if cornered, they go for the eyes, and are fast... and don't even MENTION PEACOCKS...
Flightless birds are BUILT for their behavior, to run, to hide... but if pressed, they can kill. Easily.
So, IRL, A bear of any kind could lose to a Flightless bird of similar size to the mount-beast, ESPECIALLY if it's a horse sized Cassowary(a.k.a. the Doom of Man... goodbye Entire European, asian, african, and austrailian continents... Your people will be missed... Damn murder Birds.) We pray that THAT never exists.
It's a toss-up. If the, let's say ostrich, fought a Grizzly, it depends on who strikes first. The bear has the mass, and the teeth and claws... but one ostrich kick can shatter bone and rupture organs... amd easily crush a bears skull. Odds are, both die, with the bear JUST edging out a Victory before succumbing to its wounds.

the "New Bear Monster"100% wins the fight the sakrete has no adaptations that would allow it to hunt large animals and in the wild probably just hunted small prey and has a disadvantage in size power and numbers and and would most likely be a prey item to the bears.
I think Josh loses the debate he said his bird wouldn't get hit and that it has sharp claws besides that he wasted a lot of time talking about how colorful the bird was and the environment from the trailer but I say he is overestimating the agility bird as well as its ability to fight the bears that pack hunt herds of what appear to be armored prey

Fuckin' Finally! Bout time this series came back to the Channel! Especially now that Sunbreak has run the course of its updates.
There's a very fundamental rule in MH ecology, and that is large monster beats small monster. Clearly, the bear is a large monster. So the raptor would need to be one too to stand a chance. But in all off MH history, there has never been a case where the hunter would have a large monster as a companion. They would always, without fail, be classified as a small monster. And while there are select few companions who would be able to solo a large monster, those are not only the exception to the rule, but also in all likelihood heavily armed, specialised for the task and go through a lot of healing and/or more than one health bar in the process. I rest my case.
This isn't entirely the case as tzitzi is actually preyed on by shamos, as well as occasions where some herbivores have actually flipped the table on large monsters that hunt them ( in one of the lore books a herd of aptonoth killed a rathalos). The main problem with the raptor versus bear argument is that the raptor has no feasible tools to actually damage the bear in a meaningful way or at least before the bear would likely take it down. It also appears that the raptor is more omnivorous than a dedicated carnivore and seeing as it is being used as a mount it likely has good stamina meaning that in a situation of being preyed on it is build more for fleeing. Overall the raptor just isn't likely to win unless it is like the other companions we have had so far for hunting it is a lot more intelligent than the bear, in which case it might be able to pull out a win using it's environment.

I wonder if the raptor thing is the only mount or if perhaps they'll have some kind of breeding system.
If the bird mount lands a few hits it's likely that the bear beast will live albeit slightly wounded. If the bear lands a hit, that will likely help the bird mount to finish with all its living depending on its health pool.

I love that you're bringing this back, it's a great format.
Round 1: I absolutely think the bear wins and I think Rage knew it too as soon as the monsters were distributed and arguing began, lol. He made a valiant effort though! As for rulings: I don't think the raptor should get a hunter and neither should the bear get a pack, just one on one. Even then I don't think the raptor would win, though. I think it's have a really hard time getting through the bear's hide, and if it did get onto the bear's back the bear could just... I don't know, roll over? Also, being able to outrun the bear doesn't mean much when the conceit is that the monsters need to defeat the other in a fight to win; if you can't fight, you can't win.
The raptor drawing was definitely better though.
Round 2: Honestly I think both of these are effectively the same in terms of fighting power, even if they're not literally the same species. I'd call this one a draw; neither of you convinced me that one would have a clear edge. As you said at the end of the five minutes, they'd just sort of bash against each other until one falls over, and I think that would just be a coin flip.
As for the drawing... I think Rage's was b-better? As a drawing, but Cotton's was more accurate to the monster, weird as that feels to say given the huge back hump. So I don't know who I'd give this point to.
The Rathalos vs. Bird scene was incredible, 10/10, would pretend to have seen in a movie theatre.
I don't actually play Monster Hunter (I tried a bit of World, but interest moved on and hasn't really returned), I just enjoy your videos on it, so I don't have a match-up suggestion, but I am looking forward to more!

Hollow bones being weak is a common misconception. The non-hollow part of Mammal and other types of creatures' bones is full of Marrow, which adds no structurale advantages or durability. A hollow bone is just as durable as a bone of comparable size and ahape that's filled.
Birds trade the extra blood Mammals have from having more marrow for the reduced weight to fly
