Hi there thanks for watching! What are your thoughts on this story? I think it’s interesting that something so simple and integral to our everyday lives was once once a topic so controversial. And it’s unfortunate doctor Semmelweis had to go through this just for the world to finally listen.
You’re helping students taking public health history and public health ethics courses everywhere by covering this story. Semmelweis was one of the cases we examined!
I am delighted that when Ignaz realized he needed to clean surgeon's hands, he went to the cleaning staff. That's really the way to go, ask the tradefolk how they do their work, and they give a very reasonable "well, if *I* had to wash a surgeon's hands after an autopsy, I suppose I'd use a chlorine-lime solution. But no one asked ME...".
Despite being lambasted at every turn and despite his tragic end, this man saved more lives than he could ever have imagined. I'm glad he was finally given the recognition he was owed, even if it had to happen post-mortem.
It's kind of shocking how recently this happened in the scope of human history. Other cultures outside of Europe had already had this knowledge for centuries, if not millennia and yet here (Europe) people were murdered for suggesting something as simple as washing your hands...
So true, and it’s not even like he was asking them to do anything crazy, just simply spend a few extra minutes washing your hands before meeting patients - the easiest possible thing to do
As an OR nurse, I want to thank Dr.Semmelwies for his ground-breaking findings. Sterility is a must in the theater and I cannot imagine an operating theater otherwise.
@@urgae9125 Your comment makes little sense. Also, Europe is not a country, you should know that. And it was far ahead in the medical field. Unless you consider voodoo a medical alternative.
it’s tragic that before, and even during, his discoveries, all those men just blamed the deceased mothers for their deaths… saying the WOMEN had “imbalanced humors”, the WOMEN had “unclean bowels”, the WOMEN were “psychologically disturbed”. and they took such massive offense when someone, especially another man, DARED to suggest that it was their fault and not the women’s…
YUP. this is absolutely the main reason why his discoveries were so controversial and why he was taken down for them. men have always been too fragile to handle being proven smth was THEIR fault and not the innocent women's they love to always blame.
To them everybody was to blame themselves for having fallen ill. Medicine was based in esoteric beliefs back then. So their reasoning was hard on everyone, including men.
I think his ideas were not accepted due to ego. Too many will not open their ears and minds to ideas that are new or "not the way we do things." It is horrifying that he was beaten and left to die. He is such a important contribution to human health. Thank you Dr. Semmelweis. Thank you Petal, I really enjoy your channel and your delivery is great!
Ah, my guess was correct. Dr Semmelweis is really an unsung hero in a lot of the western world, and this story really shows the importance of examining traditional practices and knowledge for their scientific merit. So much wisdom has been lost, or just not understood by Western science for so long because no one bothered to listen to "primitive" people. And human stubbornness and confirmation bias has so much to answer for.
Yay! Love that you got it right! And that is so true. It really makes me wonder about all of the other things that have been discovered before and things that are even currently being discovered right now but are receiving similar responses to the one’s Dr. Semmelweis received.
He is unknown in the West, but here in Hungary we are aware of his contributions. The largest medical university and a string of clinics is named after DR. Semmelweis.
I work in healthcare as a nurse’s aide…. The thought of not washing my hands with what I do makes my skin crawl… thinking of a DOCTOR not washing hands/sanitizing equipment?!?! Pure shock!!! I love your videos so much I hope you make soooo many more! I’m so glad RUclips recommended you 🫶🏼

When I was in my last year of high school, my class did a play about Semmelweis, simply named "Semmelweis", by Norwegian mid century author and playwright Jens Bjørneboe. It was certainly an experience I shan't ever forget. We learned so much from that play, about this man and his intense fight to get doctors to just wash their goddamned hands between doing autopsies and delivering babies. I played various smaller roles; one of Semmelweis' students, and I also played some bigwig on the Vienna medical board, etc. And there's just something about their lines that just... Idk, have never left me. As his student, when he ordered us to wash our hands, I remember laughing incredulously and telling him something like "But professor! We are GENTLEMEN! We washed our hands this morning, as we do every morning! WE are not filthy plebeians!" As if the order to wash our hands was utterly absurd, as if our class and upbringing meant we were just simply CLEANER than "the rabble". As the medical board bigwig, I scolded him for touting such wild ideas - did he mean to tell us that MIASMA THEORY, which everyone knew was true, was in fact....just bullshit??? REALLY? How dare he??? Without proper evidence??? For THAT matter, some of those women might be punished by God, had he thought about that, hmmmm??? I feel like the more things change, the more they stay the same. I personally know a couple of doctors who just didn’t follow any COVID restrictions at all and when I brought it up, they basically all said “how DARE you I am a DOCTOR.” So… it’s fine for you to fly to Hawaii and go out to clubs that are operating illegally? Same thing happened here. These rich, educated men got very upset when it was suggested they might try washing their hands. “How DARE you! It is the PATIENTS who are dirty, I, a mighty DOCTOR, am CLEAN!”
Tbf I feel like many doctors are doing it because of their families, even new doctors, I feel like rarely are they doing it for anything besides the status of being a doctor and the eventual income a couple years down the line. Obviously I’ve met pretty good doctors, especially those at family clinics. But some stories and some things you hear about how just much they don’t care about people.
Well, mask wearing actually increases the rate of respiratory illnesses. All the research prior to & since the beginning of this has shown the same results. What other precautions were you worried about?

The two departments of obstetrics had admittance on alternating days and so many Viennese women knew about the difference in care that anecdotally, women who went into labour on days the doctor ward had admittance they would try to wait out the day at home and go to the midwife ward the next day. Absolutely insane!
I imagine the doctors would have felt so offended to hear that women preferred the care of midwives. They probably looked down on women even more… our hysteria and all that…
I'm almost 70 years old. When I was a child the small town I lived in actually had--a non-denominational hospital and a Catholic hospital. Women wanted to give birth in the non-denominational hospital because the Catholic hospital prioritized the life of the baby over the life of the mother. Statistically, if the baby can't be saved, often the mother can be. If the mother dies, the baby almost always dies also. So, prioritizing the baby's life over the mother's makes no sense.

The man had a theory, tested it and got results numerous times. He went through every step of the scientific method every time and each time it proved that washing hands leads to less deaths. There is no reason anyone should have kept rejecting that part the next step was just finding out why. I believe his critics were just upset about being called dirty and being told their practice was wrong so they shunned him.

I've heard this before but never in so much detail. Great overview of the greatness of his discovery and the sad irony of his end. Sad that they thought that though in the face of so much repeated evidence.

Thanks for sharing all of this! I’ve heard brief accounts of how hand hygiene came about, however hadn’t heard the majority of this. It’s fascinating how people responded to this new information. True crime? Medical history? Great storytelling? 10/10 Great channel recommendation! I love learning new things and it's wild how this guy figured out aseptic technique before Pasteur and Lister!

I always felt that medical school admittance should have required a psych exam.
That is so spot on!
It's sad that your eyes haven't been opened to the lies of the pandemic. People allowed their governments to trample their rights and lie to their faces. Now we are finding out that those who were called "conspiracy theorists" were actually right. I just hope the number of people who can see through the bs continues to grow and I hope that number terrifies our government.
I really love videos like these. There are so many people we never acknowledge, but their contributions have saved millions of lives.
Just found your channel and had to binge watch. I love these types of true stories. You have a talent for storytelling and think your channel will blow up. Can’t wait to hear more. Thanks.😊
This was right up my alley. As a nurse of 24 yrs, this was an amazing doc.
I'm only a minute into the video and just want to say you have a perfect storyteller-voice, my head just calmed down so quickly and could concentrate here. I remember hearing about this story some years ago, so really looking forward to watching the rest of the video, and your future work 🌼
Agreed
Before she retired my sister was very high up in infectious control for the county we live in in England. She was the main one who saw the county through Covid. She'd love this video. When you become a doctor it’s obvious you’re going to have a great bedside manner. You seem to have such a nice disposition have a wonderful way of getting things across. Patronising boomer comment: your parents or guardians must be incredibly proud.
You’ve got nine videos and over 43k subscribers, you are going to be massive.
good on this guy for doing all he could to help women.
I told you, you would blow up!!! I’m so excited that I’ve been here since the beginning!!! Wishing you all the greatest blessings!
Petal, thank you so much for your hard work, research, eloquence and grace. I love listening to you narrate these stories and your a breath of fresh air in this world. As a person that is chronically ill and bed ridden at times, RUclips is my go to for information and entertainment and you’re so appreciated. I know you’ll succeed and your channel will grow because of how well you narrate and research. Wishing you all the success hon, God bless. ❤️🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
I just love looking back at history. To me it seems like society is always going to resit change like this. I trust in humanities endless pursuit of knowledge, and in people wanting to do their part to make the world a better place. In small ways or big ways like this.
It's also so refreshing to see a man in the 1800s caring about women lol?
I saw your other medical malpractice video and after this one, I'm definitely going to binge your channel. Thank you for this content it's *chefs kiss*
Greetings from Ghana. Great content and effort, Sis!!
Hi there! Thank you so much, I appreciate that! :)
I'm so glad YT recommended your channel ❤❤❤ Btw your room's ambience is very cosy.
I just found your channel last night. Can I just say that I have a horrible attention span, but I was able to watch your videos from start to finish 😮 I can't tell you the last time I finished a video. I enjoy your content and am looking forward to seeing your channel grow. ❤
They probably looked down on women even more… our hysteria and all that…
@@Liliarthanthey're still not all happy about midwives.
2 days ago you were at 13k subs. Now you have 25.9k subs. Clearly you are going to be very successful. RUclips recommended your video to me yestrday. I know a good channel so subscribed immediately. Cant wait to see more of your videos and watch your channel grow.i truly hope your own cancer treatment is going well.
My new favorite channel. How you present the information is spot on. Your voice is so soothing, and i enjoy how you share the story and info without tangenting off topic. When people do that, my attention span suffers. Love these stories you share
Your content. Your cozy background. Your calming voice. Love it!
This was so good. I appreciate you telling these stories, giving us a chance to learn about them.
Ms./Dr. Palmer, you are an excellent speaker and your subject is very interesting.
Yay! So glad to have a new episode from you!
Ah I’m so glad! Thank you so much for watching! :)
Thank. You I heard of this when I was in nursing college. 👋👋👋👋💜I was a labor and delivery nurse It was my love. I delivered many babies by myself. Thank you 🙏🏻we look at the past and think how awful it was and rough then we look at the present and think how awful things are. Man never Learns
This reminds me of SpongeBob and Patrick had a war over hygiene.
The lines;
“WASH YOUR HANDS!”
“NEVER!”
…kept coming to mind when listening to this video.
I love your videos I'm so glad you're doing well health wise and thank you so much for sharing All these wonderful Videos
I'm really glad your channel popped up in my recommendations.
I look forward to future uploads. Medical related stuff is interesting and terrifying and I love it. 💜
Keep doing these videos! I hope your channel blows up!
Thank you. Every body thinks I'm obsessed with clean hands, I try to tell them, you actually touch at least 500x the germs you breath. I appreciate you. They all about to watch this.
The amount of air punching grown men were doing to NOT eash their hands, scares me more than anything.
This is THEE channel I was missing in my life. I can't find Mystery Diagnosis anywhere and I love true crime as well as mystery in general. Petal, you angle. Thank you so much for doing the good work and filling my Special Interest Niche.
Interesting story, thanks! You did a great job covering this!
Wow, I didn't expect you to cover a Hungarian story. Hello from Hungary
I just found your channel and binge watched all your videos! Keep up the amazing work!! ❤
Excellent work, this is the first time I have heard the whole story. What a terrible ending to this brilliant man’s life. Keep them coming. Thank you.
I’ve been getting recommendations for your videos recently, they are all so good, I truly hope you get all the success you deserve.
I read a book about him. I'm sure your going to cover the gruesome practices of "Drs." At that time. Thank you for not being dramatic and sensationalistic. It's a pleasure to listen to you.
I must ask you, Petal, are you in the medical field yourself? The way that you can easily say complicated medical terms and procedures is absolutely phenomenal!
I just found your channel, and I’m binge watching your videos. Your channel was in my recommended view list, and I’m highly impressed with you, and your channel.
I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. I never knew who began the washing of hands recommendation. We owe this doctor a lot!!!
I've heard this before but never in so much detail. Great overview of the greatness of his discovery and the sad irony of his end.
I think other doctors were resistant to change, especially from someone who also looked so young and inexperienced compared to them. Sad that they thought that though in the face of so much repeated evidence.
Love this channel so far. I'm only 3 videos in. Very clearly spoken and so informative I'm never left with questions after the videos ends. Continue what you're doing! The world needs more of this.
This medical stuff category is my favorite! Keep up the good work I’m glad I found you
Thank you for covering this! As a childbirth educator I speak about Semmelweiss in class and I made a video on this topic too.
Your channel videos keep coming up in my suggested. I watched several and subscribed. I really enjoy this and find them informative.
It’s mind boggling that this happened only 150 years ago.
I'm glad I'm here. Its gonna be exciting to watch you grow. You're honestly so good at this!
This case is devastating.... all he wanted was for people to wash their hands... his wife didn't even have his back.... I think he should have started his own hospital
Great video, Petal! I read about this in the book “The Butchering Art” by Lindsey Fitzharris! Great read about the history of surgery
I have actually heard about this gentleman's story from Dr. Mike's channel, It is quite sad that no one appreciated all the work he did.
I find your channel so interesting. Thank you for sharing these stories with us.
Such a tragic story but thankfully his tireless efforts and horrible demise was not in vain. Another fantastic video 🙌
I’ve heard this story but it bears repeating. Thanks for a lesson in arrogance as well as germ theory ❤
This is so f*cked up. Poor guy.
I'm literally so interested in this channel. So in depth and very well presented 😊. Thank you
I love listening to these stories, petal also has such a lovely voice to listen to 😊
Hey! Just found your channel and I’ve been binge watching your content since then. I’m such a picky person when it comes to content I like and I lovvve your channel. Glad to see some fresh new stories I’ve never heard of. Keep it up I’m here for it. ☺️🎉
Randomly stumbled upon this channel and now I am binge-watching while studying. Thanks for the awesome vids!!! 😄
I really admire and respect how well-researched (and accessible) your videos are. Thank you for educating us!!
Hi Petal, I have subscribed to your channel. I watched another video on this Dr, but you have added so much more information and it was interesting as well as informative. Thank you. P. S. You have a beautiful name 😊
Petal, you are fantastic! I'm eo ylad that your channel was recommended to me. I'm excited that I will get to watch your channel grow to 100k and beyond.
That is so sad. He fought so long. Im glad he did
I really am glad i came across your channel!❤❤❤❤
Just like many famous painters/artists from the past, their remarkable talents and commitment to their work even through suffering were only recognized posthumously.
Im so obsessed with watching ur videos I’ve been watching them yesterday for hours while i did some work haha
I just found your channel. I loveee medical info and historical info. Your voice is sooo calming too. Thank you
Please continue making more videos. I just found this channel the other day and I'm addicted 😊 I hope all is well ❤
It's shameful what they did to this man... he's out here thinking and saving lives, but they're too arrogant to listen. 😢
Hi Petal 🤗 thank you for the true stories, you are definitely so gifted. God bless you! You have a new listener 😁 I hope you’re doing well.
I love your videos, your voice is so calming and actually helps keep my mind relaxed while doing my school work. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing all of this! I’ve heard brief accounts of how hand hygiene came about, however hadn’t heard the majority of this. It’s fascinating how people responded to this new information. But probably not surprising, given the way many respond to developing ideas now, even with solid evidence. It’s always sad when people fight so hard for a better world, but don’t get to see the outcome of their work.
i just found your channel! im already a fan and i love how your voice is so calm and soothing!
I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did. You’re videos are sooo interesting and you’re a gifted storyteller. Great Job!
I just found your channel and I love the way you deliver stories! I have no doubt your channel will grow and grow ASAP. Subscribed 🖤
Binge watching your channel right now. I'm loving it!
Thank you for sharing this story.
True crime? Medical history? Great storytelling?
10/10 Great channel recommendation!
I love learning new things and it's wild how this guy figured out aseptic technique before Pasteur and Lister!
Your channel is amazing I’m gonna start recommending you to my friends 💕💕you deserve all the subs
Also, he noticed that the doctors were going from mother to mother delivering babies. And only wiping their hands. The midwives were dipping their hands in some sort of solution after each birth.
Wow this is such a tragic story , I hope he can rest peacefully knowing how ingrained in society washing hands is now
Great video, you have such good presence and you are really engaging. Enjoying a lot of your videos, you deserve so much success!
