Nice! Im a fan. But can you give any tips though, i get nervous when we’re about to spar and usually end up just blocking kicks, im a yellow belt :)

They way I do it is I go offensive the moment the sparing begins. Usually some people look at each other for 5 seconds just feinting, etc, but if you keep going towards them and pushing them to defense, it will make you look a lot better for your sensei and will also make you not possible to get beat up if it’s a 1v1 unless the other person is a lot better than you. This is coming from a 1st dan black belt so you can decide if you want to take my advice ;)

Two things I usually tell people when they are sparring is 1. Think in 3s. Don't just throw something and if you miss/get blocked back up or give up. Throw something, follow it up, and then throw a final strike. Usually your opponent can block the first 2 but by the third they can't think that fast and you can get a hit in. 2. Don't think too much. If you are trying to calculate your moves too much you are either going to lock up and be too slow, or you are going to inadvertently reveal your plan to your opponent and they are going to be ready to block it or move away. Eventually you will find a flow and it will come much more naturally. Other tips: don't be afraid to get hit. The goal of sparring isn't to never get hit, its just to minimize hits and land more on your opponent. You might take some hits and that's OK! Finally, pay attention to your opponent. Everyone has a fighting style even if they don't realize it. If you start to notice some of their favorite moves, you can be ready for them. I sparred against someone who LOVED spinning kicks to the head and I took a few kicks to the head before I noticed this. Even though his spin kicks were SUPER fast I could eventually notice his body language when he was about to wind up for a spin kick and all I would have to do is duck and he would kick right over me, and then be vulnerable for a kick to the chest. It's awesome that you are getting out on the mat and sparing, don't be afraid of it and keep at it!
