I like the BOARD OF WISDOM... The different things you write get to everyone in one way or another..Well done.
Sure thing buddy, just a bit of fun, and something we can all relate to at some point or another...
Saw this video months ago and thought of it again when discovering SODA-blasting (baking soda) for myself. You should really look into this my friend. Think it could be useful with the future builds and the new shop. It’s amazing what you can do with that stuff without damaging de base material. You can use it to strip paint or clean parts like carburetors and engines and even plastic, wood or glass...you name it. And it’s even safe for the environment!
Going to be a one off mate. One cool looking bike. All the best Paul. 👍👍👍
Thanks Paul, Great to hear from you mate.
thanks for the video
Here’s a tip for you Del , If you break the surface of the clearcoat in just a small area then apply the paint stripper it will attack the basecoat and wrinkle up nicely 👍🏻
I tried this method when painted my bike. I did use same paint stripper as Del in this video. Didn't work at all .
Still watching. I like what you are attempting! On to 27.
Looks great Del. I like the scuff marks. The Fatboy I have has those all over the tank and fenders with a blue paint job. Really like that effect
Nice one buddy, sounds like a CVO bike?
Wish it was a CVO. I think someone stripped the original paint and did this custom
Looking good Del. Can't wait to see the finished product mate. Penny and you have a relaxing weekend. Cheers
Thanks mate, enjoying exploring this! Have a great weekend yourself, have a chill, D&Px
been good to watch, easier on the eye than the long projects, thanks for great entertainment
They must watering down the Nitromoors these days mate it used to be lethal ☠ . . Good work watching religiously 👌😎
It did indeed Dave, made yer eyes water and stung yer fingers....its a much use as painting it with Miller Light..!
As always, these are really fun to watch and follow along.
Wonderful my friend 🤓 very very wonderful
Beatiful detail
It's worth the wait...believe me 🤓👍
Regards
Best wishes
And by the way
I have some boots like yours
🤓🤘
Hi David.. thank you my friend, always good to hear from you..!
@@Moonfleet41 🤓👍 thanks!!!
Keep pending
Ok? 🤘
Absolutely love this idea Del! I think a blank Harley symbol (just a black outline) on the sides of the tank would look Fantastic with the scuffed background!!
Bronze cast HD badge maybe?
Oooh now you’re just teasing lol
they have made the paint stripper "Safe" for us and the environment plus more expensive. Nice vid again. Thanks
I like the look! Can't wait to see the finished product...
I think it will look fantastic. As a custom car fanatic from the 70's I remember crinkle paint when it first came out. That also looked fantastic. Push the boundary's Del, that's how we get to see new stuff.
Absolutely mate, nothing ventured, nothing gained aye?!
Del you are transforming that bike into something fantastic. I can't wait for the next exciting video
Hi Del , nice job.. Im working on my cx fuel tank too and I used a paint stripper called " Power Strip Best Industrial Strength Heavy Duty Paint Stripper Remover " it work well but a genius decided to put a later of tow mil all over the tank before changing the colour ...lol so a lot of sanding work . the bare metal looks great. Thanks, Gus
Hi Gus, good to hear from you!... Hope your project goes well, and thanks for the link to the product, that's very useful for the future!... have a great weekend, D&Px
This looks great! I was looking to do a raw tank on my Nighthawk build and this is perfect. Thanks for the inspiration mate.
Bloody hell Dell ? You have done it again it will look FANTASTIC,,,,,
Looks great buddy, the clear coat will bring that pattern out even more, regards Stu
Cheers Stu, am hoping so, like varnish on wood grain!
Excellent as per D&P,also I’m picking up a new project myself tomorrow morning a 2005 varadero 1000xl 22k one previous services twice a year silver/black,cannot wait man! Stoked
Nice one Steven, congratulations mate, its awesome picking up a new bike, even if its just for a project..! Good luck with it buddy.. have fun.. Del.
I like the look of that Del - very creative stuff - should look fabulous when you've done it....oh and can you hurry up with it? Summer is around the corner and I want a ride on that puppy! ;0)
Ha ha Summer, i remember that, i think it emigrated to Portugal about last September... but i hear its coming home soon for a visit, so yeah, time to get the toys ready to play aye..!!! cheers buddy, have a great weekend, and chat soon.. Del.
I do believe the The metal effect is growing on me. Keep the good work up mate
Kind regards.
Looking good ! Can't wait for the finished produkt !!
I think I have change my mind after seeing tank great work it was worth going experimental RIDE SAFE DELBOY
that brushed finish is gonna look good brother! bloody well done, might have to steal the idea for my own bike when i get my license ;)
Gas tank looks awesome so far...... Penny and You Del have A Great Weekend. And happy International Women's Day To Penny💐💐💐
Hi Paul, You made a new best friend there, penny likes that a lot. Have a good weekend yourselves, ride safe and have a great weekend... D&Px
What a great idea, looks really good. Can't wait for the end result on this one Del :)
Absolutely looking great del top class work mate
Ye it ain't what it use to be del it never seems take anything off ,I use to use this to strip spindles and newel posts watching it bubble up was amazing. Getting there del won't be long now and you be cruising like a king 👍👍
pop to a local paint shop that supplies bodyshops they can sell you proper paint stripper from around £18 per liter its powerful. also a little trick is get the stripper on thick then cover the whole item in plastic. its stops the active stripping ingredient evaporating . i paint bikes for a living and there is no paint stronger then the oem paint the clearcoat is like stone
I work in a restoration garage classic cars and have found the same story with nitromors we use a product called starchem synstrip seems to work well like the old nitrimors before they removed the good stuff . Keep up the good work love your vids .
Great idea Del the bike is going to look stunning. Yeah I have noticed nitromoors getting weak, that stuff was lethal years ago.
Sure was SImone, not much use to anyone now!...
An engineer friend once taught me to polish the steel first, then use a grey/red scotch pad on a sander to get desired effect. It's a lot less "grinder looking"
"...amazed at the machining community...and your tolerance." No pun intended. ;) Have to admit I personally liked the brushed-type finish with the grinder 6:30 before you used the scotchbrite, but it ain't no fun if you ain't trying new stuff and learnin'! Can't wait for the final result.
Like that.............good job
For future reference del I use a product called starchem synstrip, it will go to the metal in about a minute my local body shop sells it for about £25 a gallon, it really is the dogs nuts
Thanks for the link buddy, it seems just about anything is better than Nitromors these days, I reckon sour milk would do a better job lol
wow Dell I used to work in a stove enamelling works back in the 70s and we used to have a 100-gallon tank of nitro mores we would put any bike or scooter or even land rover parts in and by the time you drank your brew it was bare metal time no problem But we always wore safety Bins you bad boy. mind you, it was either cellulose or enamel paint, not this new fangled 2 pack stuff
I think that's the problem, paint has moved on but Nitromors hasn't!
Awesome work, I really like that effect!
it's a cool look!!
Oh those darn hippies with their organic paint stripper.
Probably good for peeling carrots.
Good vid 👍👍👍.
Ha ha ha.. quote of the day... but only organic carrots obviously.. !
@@Moonfleet41 ofcourse!!!
😂
That looks awesome.
Agreed about the Shitetromorse paint non-stripper. It's gone crap now. :(
Liking the look of the tank... I wasn't so sure on the front "fender" but it's growing on me :)
Keep up the great work you lucky boy :)
Thank you Sir, it\s been amazing how so many people have turned their opinion since doing the tank, starting on the rear fender tomorrow, thanks buddy!
Great build Mr D 👍
Great idea on the fender and tank detail. Every try using Scotch Bright pads for the same effect w/o the scratch look. The picture taking of parts etc is what I do also. Man we would be in a heap of trouble if we lost our phones! (>: Your videos are very inspiring
I would buy smaller sand disc like 30mm and made whole circles like you wanted to do in the first place it would look more controled and had a ridem to the pattern. Cant wait to see how it will all look at the end. Keep up the good work.
Hi del very interesting effect on the tins and will look cool when the black is painted around it, when it comes to the clear coat we use one on lathed wheels which has an etch built into it for bare metal which it’s what you’d need on your project normal clear would more than likely just chip away then you’d have a nause to put it right after, best of luck with it it does look really good so far
I coming around to buffed effect, the contrast between the top of the tank and sides.
This will be very interesting! 👍
Looking good Del. Following with interest.
Looking good
Nice work-as usual
(P) Getting close now, will soon be on the road. Have a great weekend both of you! 😀
You too buddy, good luck with the impending arrival... hope both are well..! see you soon aye.. D&Px
Aircraft stripper worked for my 03 VFR tank...had a ding in the tank from the previous owner I had to fill, and I wanted a black and Kawi green viffer...just be careful, it BURNS like no other if you get it on your skin.
Fab video again, see you in 2 weeks!!
Looking good Del❤️
I LOVE IT!!! looks damn good. Damn shame the stripper was limp and didn't work. Oh well, that didn't stop you my friend. Great video.
What an amazing series of videos. Excellent project with straight forward, no nonsense explanations. Superb.
One question though.............. will you be taking the finished bike to a meet up to show it off at all? If so, where and when please?
Hi Kerie, Thank you for your kind words my friend, im glad you enjoy the videos, its been a short project compared to than last one, but im really looking forward to riding it now... just got to get the paint done, then its final assembly things like indicators, seat and mirrors... ready to go.. I don't have any plans to show the bike, its just a rider not a poser, and its more bout enjoying it on the road... But over the season we get out to most of the events across the South coast so maybe we'll catch up with you at some point.. take care and thanks again buddy.. ! Del.
What an awesome idea ..maybe a candy paint overs the metal to make it pop more.??
Hi del yep that's cool. I like it 😎😎😎
🤩
Hi Dell boy
Try on line for a industrial paint striper ,it work for me .
The new green nitromors is nice on apple crumble instead of custard .
Regards Paul
Its friday so means one thing get my fix of your vid :-) have a great weekend to you both
Hi Mark, Great to hear from you, and have a great weekend yourself..!
you make it look so easy Del.....I know it's not...looking good buddie.
Thanks Tony.. its not difficult, just time consuming and tedious, but its really rewarding when it comes out right..! Hope life is good buddy, have a great weekend.. Del.
Hi guys, what's happening with Nitromors, I remember in the late 70s putting it on my GT 550 casings, the lacquer came off almost instantaneously, but hay ho, you got there in the end, & quickly too. I think it's going to look great , have a great weekend both x👍👍😎
Hi Geoff, too right, think the Europenas got hold of it and took all it's beans away!... Have a great weekend mate, soon be summer lol, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 Good on you both, have a nice weekend ( I can't imagine you two ever having a lie in 🤭🤭) 👍👍😎
@@geoffozevans4500 haha we don't Geoff, well maybe Xmas Day lol
Thanks for your video, having the same issue paint stripper not working on my old TY175 tank, quick one what wheel did you use on your grinder to get the paint off? Thanks, Karl
Hi Karl, this is the paint cleaning fleece that I use, most importantly it is a stuff plastic and doesn't grind away at the metal... it will leave an etched finish, but won't actually remove any steel, very safe for stripping paint... here's a link to what you're looking for (you may need a couple as they do break up quite quickly): www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184919801709
@@Moonfleet41Thank you Delboy, appreciate 👌
Hi Del, enjoying this build the finish is similar to that of guitars called (Quilt Finish) regards Rich.
Didn't like the texture on the front mud guard, but its growing on me, putting some contrast on it will make it feel more complete. Great skills and I love that you're not afraid to take the build in new directions, looking forward to the test ride so we can see it in all its revived glory...even if it is a Harley! Lol
I was kind of against it too at first but seeing it come together now...I think it's going to look smashing. Has to be only two colour options when it comes to paint though. Orange or Black.
Cheeky..lol.. But thanks Keith, looking forward to getting out for a ride.
Ya I can't watch this one, I hate that hammered look, to me it's just ruining a good piece of metal. I'll check back in once this build is over, good luck.
Bring back methylene chloride! 'King EU, ay? Great vid as always. Be interesting to see if you could turn a smaller diameter detail sanding disk out of Delrin, would give you a tighter scuff. Not that it's needed on this job, really loving the look as is.
Thanks buddy much appreciated!
👍
👌
I thought the bare metal tank looked lovely. But looking forward to seeing this done.
With that effect on the tank, proper realistic tru flame airbrushing might be an option
True custom
I've seen some people using a paint stripper called Aircraft Remover which appears to be highly potent stuff.
oh yes it is, [not even sure if its available over here in the UK], and you can literally watch the paint lift off
you need to get an interface pad and use the whole of the sanding discs when you do that sort of thing and keep overlapping them, imo half circles look much better, i dont want to be rude but that just looks like a novice has had ago at sanding that down. i had a push bike years ago with that half circles finish on it and it used to reflect the light nicely on a summers days and under street lights. youll also have to use an etch lacquer on the bare metal areas
Those uniform half circles remind me of 1970's ceiling artex Ross... thats all i think of when i see them... so i wanted it an abstract pattern, not uniform...
---and correct me if im wrong, but don't bare metal etch products lift paint up..?
Hiya fella. Yup Nitromorse was rubbish after the EU got their hands on it, they had to stop using certain chemicals and ruined a perfectly good product. I use a product from a professional bodywork wholesaler which works as you described. RSMB.
Thanks brother, reckon you're right, all things have to be safe for children these days aye lol... see you in the summer mate, ride safe, keep in touch!
I’m excited to see how and what you recommend to seal the bare metal, I’d love to do something similar to my bike
Stick with it buddy, it'll all be covered by the time it's on the road!
cool
I'm surprised you didn't try brake fluid, since everyone complains it will damage the paint.
hey Del! This'll probably get lost in the ether because it's a 5 year old vid, but that bit where you said "the factory paint is the best possible base coat", does that hold true even if there's some flaking and rust on the factory paint? I've got a rear fender from a Sporty XL and most of the paint is in pretty good nic, but right at the back beneath the number plate it's all flakey. Was thinking about scraping the flakey stuff off, sanding it all over and then painting it, think it's a good idea? Or should I strip the whole thing back to bare metal to paint? Thanks so much for your advice over the years buddy!
The mantra that factory paint is a great basecoat stands firm, but only if the paint is sound.. and on HD fenders it seems to rust out from the inside really easily... so natually get all the loose paint off, then feather back the good paint to blend the line at least... or, for a simply life, just grind it all off to be sure..! and another good tip for Harley fenders.. get a good thick layer of stone chip paint on the inside to stop it happening again..! Good luck with it.
@Moonfleet41 thanks so much Del, you're the best!
Sort of a shame to loose the original paint :( ( I like to see a bit of original Harley ) -- what about trying hydrodip for the sides ? a change from the rattle can? - would be an interesting and not expensive learn me thinks (and really creative finishes).
I love the concept of hydrodip, but it is a lot of grief to do yourself and I wouldn't wanna pay for it while I still have creative ideas left to explore... maybe in the future!
Looks great! Wish I could buy it from you.
Not for sale this one I'm afraid buddy, this one's gonna be a keeper... !
How many times have we heard that :)
Going to look great Del thought you would have put the effect down the centre of tank to lineup with mudguard so they matched but do like the metal effect mate 👍
Hi Jeff... im following a really old paint style from the 1950's, when eraly Dou Glides had a two tone paint scheme they always did the top of the fenders, and the sides of the tank....my Old Switchback had the same contrast... it looks a bit back to front, but works visually once its done...
Moonfleet41 new there must be a reason for it can’t wait to see the finished bike 👍
Great job Del! I have a question and I'm sorry I know it's been said in the past. Every time I watch your TV channel It amazes me how much you have in that space. So how big is that garage? Thanks for your time Del take care .👍
Thak you buddy, the garage is a wonder of storage!... it's only 20ft x 10ft and I have to put everything away I'm not using!
Hey brother. What grit(s) sandpaper did you use and what order? Thanks!
I don't recall exactly, it was a long time ago, but if it helps, then key the metal surface with a 180 grit for primer, and that'll give it a good key... it's more important to clean chemically and bare metal is best cleaned with neat thinners.
interesting finish, look forward to seeing it with a clear coat. One question though, would it be better to do the side of the front mudguard rather than the middle in order to match the tank and then again on the rear. That way, you could have a centre line of black running front to back over the bike with the pattern at the sides where they are more visible?
Pretty much all the two tone paint schemes on Harleys have top and side combined between the tank and fenders, it breaks up a slab of colour from the side or top, and visually works... not sure if this will.. but following the style to see how it looks... time will tell aye.!
Just curious, why not do top of tank instead of the sides? Would flow with the fenders no?
No, because that you get a slab of colour from the side or top and you lose the two tone effect, this is the way the factory does it with the two tone big twins on most occasions...
I get it. Thinking of it like a car stripe.
I don't know what that stuff was like but I've hears it's no good. There is stuff that dose do the job really well out there still, but I think sand/particle blasting is so much better and easier these day's. It would not cost much to get it done somewhere, or even better get a cheap blast gun to get setup, you don't really even need the cabinet to start with.
Nitromors used me be lethal mate.. you'd just paint a stripe of it on the job, and watch the paint lift right down to bare metal in front of your eyes....like a crawling Caterpillar..... but not any more.!
PS. Doing the swirls on the tank sides ought not the front and rear fender be on the sides too, to match? The black bar on top of tank wont match the fenders? wont be a continuous black. PSS. Before painting tank have you checked the internal for rust, which can happen in a 20yr old tank and needs cleaning and treating.
Hi mate, check out the old school two tone big twin paint jobs, things like Duo Glides and FLH's from days gone by, they usually alternated sides to top on the colours to avoid the bike having a single slab of colour when viewed side on... it accentuated the two tone effect... just experimenting as I go, not trying to make a show bike. Have a good weekend!
Really enjoying!!! Fantastic. I LOVE that look, cannot wait till it is done to see it - and fantastic things are moving at such a pace that it will not be long! Maybe offer TMF a ride/review on it once you are done so that chap finally has a go on a Harley!?!? LOL.
Hi Scott, Keen to get it on the road and start shaking it down, ill be doing a few jobs once its on the road, maybe some servicing and maintenance, and perhaps some changes to the setup, but by the end of the month, ill want it running and riding.. can;t wait.!
I thought you were going to leave the paint alone? I am interested in how this turns out.
Couldn't live with the white buddy, just looked too non descript.. hoping this will look trick and stand out a little too.!
Surely at this point Nitromorse is in violation of "not fit for purpose".
Yeah, i agree..!
Why is there so much paint inside the front fender? Is it protection from stone chips or have I missed the mark?
It's mild steel it will rust inside out if not protected.
Exactly Philip, protection from stone chips, metal fenders always rust out from the inside..!
Aircraft paint stripper - dichloromethane, the banned substance from main stream paint strippers, used as a general anaesthetic in Victorian days. Still strips like a stripper.
Awesome!
clear coat on polished metal without primer no good idea
Great Video going to look bloody awesome Del 👏👏👌🏻👍😎
I was a bit skeptical about this at first, but I should know never to doubt you man! Haha looks way better than I thought it would. Can’t wait to see her painted. Have you mentioned a color yet?
Hi Dylan, Thanks for your kind words buddy, I'm just gonna coat the sides of the fenders and top of the tank in black, then clear coat the lot to seal it for now... not sure i even want a colour, if i just choose one an then don;t like it, i can't just paint over it,m ill loose the steel look i love.. and will have to start again...so ill just be bolting it back together in black and clear for now, and see how i feel about a colour later...if at all.!
@@Moonfleet41 well whatever you do, it will be done up right, and I'm along for the ride haha! great content.
@@dylansmith8339 Thanks buddy, gotta push the boundaries aye?!
I Buddy, that is coming along sweeet. Loving the swirls, are you gonna use a high gloss clear coat? I'm gonna follow the next few videos on time, man have I been busy. Loads to do and not enough time to get it all in lol. Ride safe bruv🤙👍
Hi Ray, yes mate, clear coat gloss to seal it all in, and hopefully maker the reflective scuffs stand out even more.! Hope you're well mate, i know what you mean, never enough hours in the day aye.!
Delrin 570 is a company name the material is glass filled acetal
Nitromors had to make the formula idiot friendly to satisfy some EU Directive. What you have is the phoney DiY product , but the professional grade is available from trade paint suppliers, where you're supposed to be 'professional' (painters?) but even that is a safe formula and less effective that the original stuff. I have just finished my last amount of Leyland paint stripper that was 15 years old and equal to old Nitromors and am on the look out for the real stuff - any ideas?
I've given up on paint strippers mate, it works fine on fresh paint, but on old factory paint it seems toothless... so, as usual, I stick with the trusty paint removal fleece and you get the peace of mind of no chemical residue left behind to haunt you!
