  • daviddas.com -- This video explores MOTU's Digital Performer 11's new Articulation Maps feature. I walk through the setup of articulation maps using the simple and free/cheap BBCSO Symphony Orchestra Discover Edition plug-in.

    Awesome. as a DP user since before the digital part… 1.22 on floppy… Was really happy to see this articulation feature. What I have not been able to figure out though is how to switch articulations with the transport stopped? I couldn’t figure out how to get that to work and without that feature it just doesn’t make sense for me… I need to be able to play the keyboard with the articulation without having to record it…

    Hi David. It would be a great inspiration and help if you could elaborate a little on the USE of articulation maps in DP11. How can you assign an articulation to more notes in the same process and is it possible by a key-switch? I use Patchboard and Metagrid with the very big libraries from VSL, where a more elaborate work-flow is needed, because of the numbers of articulations involved.

  • @avrstrt

    Hi David. I'm having such a hard time following this. I can't use the -c or -f notes on my 88 key keyboard and when I play the flute notes and move the articulation in red down to staccato it still plays it legato. Can you please help me with this?

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад

      Hard to understand exactly what you're doing. If possible you might want to make a screen recording and show -- then it'll be easier to follow. I understand that your 88-key keyboard can't reach those super-low notes, but that's exactly what articulation maps can help you solve -- they can help you not only manage but also remap those to other triggers (remotes).

  • @michaellaumusic
    @michaellaumusic 5 месяцев назад +1

    David, do you use the Delay functionality? I love it although it requires some finessing when notes overlap due to a negative delay, and right now you cannot go past -200 (i.e. -201, -202, etc.). Might be cool to do a follow up about this.

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  5 месяцев назад

      I haven't used that yet.

    • @michaellaumusic
      @michaellaumusic 5 месяцев назад

      @@daviddasYou should play around with it when using keyswitches. I used Babylon Waves and all I need to do is add the Delay parameter to each. So I don't make myself nuts, As I use an articulation, I just add the delay piecemeal. The only sad thing is that if you replace the maps via an update (write over them) they are lost.

    Nice video. A question: when you copy a track in DP, will its corresponding articulation map also be copied for the new track?

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад +1

      When you copy (duplicate) a track, the newly created duplicate will be assigned to the same articulation map as the original track. So, for example, if you duplicate flute 1 and rename it flute 2, it'll function exactly the same. If you want the duplicate to use a different articulation map, you'd assign it in the Articulation Map Setup.

    David Thanks! Have you had trouble with distortion with Big Sur and your Articulation map library sounds?

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  2 года назад

      No. Distortion should have nothing to do with articulation maps. The problem is likely somewhere else, and you'll have to diagnose it step by step. Figure out if it's coming from an instrument, or from something in DP, or from your audio interface, etc.

    Huh? Another question I guess. CineSamples uses velocity for articulation switching by default. Is there a way to do that with DP's Articulation Maps? ...or should I switch CineSamples instruments to KeySwitch mode?

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад +1

      You can do it either way. DP's AM's can control via velocity too. (Saw your previous question come in but I can't find it anymore to answer it.)

    • @danwool
      @danwool 3 года назад

      @@daviddas Cool. I'll need to dig a bit deeper. CineSamples is really organized around that method.
      I can tell already I'll be a good consumer of third party AM templates. I've got libraries from lotsa companies. Each one's approach to articulations varies slightly.
      ...I think youtube must have pulled down my last post because it contained a link to Steve Steele's page? Apart from thanking you for this timely video, My question *was* are "Expression Maps" just what Cubase calls Articulation Maps? It looks like that is the case.

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад +2

      @@danwool Yes, each lib is a little different, however, DP's AM support should be able to handle ANY approach, and it's pretty easy to design. Consider the BabylonWaves bundle if you just want it all typed in for you, however, you will still spend time customizing your remotes to whatever your preferred template is.
      Interesting theory on the link - don't know. In any case, yes, Cubase expression maps are essentially the same thing, and (huge bonus) MOTU created DP's AM's to be able to import Cubase's expression maps flawlessly, so if you find Cubase expression maps, they're good to go.
      I think the biggest decision to make is deciding what you want your personal layout to be (i.e. BabylonWaves, UACC, or a custom layout) and how you want to trigger it (iPad, button controller, etc.) Once you've made that decision, building each library is not too time-consuming.

    • @danwool
      @danwool 3 года назад

      @@daviddas Probably best we DP users learn the ropes of articulation mapping, and explore the different methods before buying third party AMs. Steve Steele's aren't available yet. I'll definitely wait to see what his look like. ...Mapping CineSamples' velocity switching has defeated me for the time being, but it's early going. Everything works, but I can't get CC64 to relinquish the Sustain articulation once it's triggered. Subsequent articulations continue to sustain. It's in here somewhere I'm sure.

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад

      Yes, that's how the left side of the Articulation Map Setup works. You choose the MIDI track (top left) then select an articulation map (bottom left) to assign to that MIDI track.

  • @andrewfeazelle
    @andrewfeazelle 7 месяцев назад

    Reading through the MOTU Forums there was a problem a while back where the continuous controller info was not able to follow the different articulation switches for an instrument track. For orchestral music, you'd want expression, dynamics, vibrato, and sometimes velocity being communicated to all articulations for a given instrument track. Did they ever fix this oversight? Apparently Cubase had this correctly programmed out of the box, but DP11 didn't, and people were having to use a third party scripting program to write their own code to fix this oversight.

    Also, what exactly is the EVENT LIST doing? What do you mean by going up and down whenever you want?

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  3 года назад

      In the event list, I'm inserting some controller messages for CC#1, CC#7, and CC#11. Each of those have values that range from 0-127. But if, for example, the library defaults to a value of 127, and you start composing at 127, then you're stuck if you want to go higher, because there are no higher values. So my solution, just to find a nice middle ground, is to insert default controller messages at the start of the sequence to have them start at a value of 64 (halfway). That way, as I sequence, I have the ability to maneuver them both up and down, as musically necessary.

    I hope MOTU continue to modernize DP, even if they have to make some major changes against the older userbase's will. Because once that userbase is gone, younger generations need to be able to pick up this amazing DAW. Last thing I want for DP is to die. It is the best DAW I've ever used.

    • @daviddas
      @daviddas  2 года назад

      Yes. They are basically "attached" to their MIDI notes, and if you copy the MIDI from one track to another, the articulations will follow. (They may react the same or differently, depending on what articulation map you have set up for the destination track and how it's designed.)
