I’m Greek , but I don’t expect a GREEK actress to play the role of CLEOPATRA (who was GREEK)… 😊
I Would be HAPPY if Catherine Zeta Jones was to play the Greek Cleopatra! She LOOKS the part and would play it WELL!
I wouldn’t mind if That Israeli actress (Wonder Woman?) was to play Cleo, because she too could pass as Greek! (But the Egyptians would be up in arms about that, for some reason (J E W)) ….
I’m just confused as to WHY Jada pinkett Smith would choose a BLACK ACTRESS to play the part of Cleopatra?? Is she Trying to erase and rewrite history ?
Equally, I’d be confused if they chose a Korean actress to be Cleopatra?
Anyway, we don’t have to Literally Hire that nationality specifically, surely?
Would you be okay if a Ugandan actress was to play the part of a Nigerian Princess or would you be outraged??

I disagree with limiting any actor to playing only roles that reflect their specific culture. The people up-in-arms about Zeta-Jones being cast in roles such as the romantic interest in the film Zoro need to pay attention to the fact she auditioned against 6 Latina actresses ... Films and plays are not cast according to any sort of fairness. All casting is completely subjective and is the call of the director, sometimes influenced by a producer who wants a say in casting for their financial backing.
By the logic being used against Catherine Zeta Jones for playing some Latina parts, Vivian Leigh would have been forbidden to audition for her most famous role of Scarlet O'Hara or any US film that lacked a part for a Brit because a British actor must not be allowed to play an American Southern character and Nicole Kidman would be required to speak with her Aussie accent and audition only for Australian films. The art of acting is in being able to create a believable illusion. Apparantly Zeta-Jones did this so well that she won a few roles that some people now resent her having played.
Most actors are thrilled to get ANY part, especially early in their career, because it's only when they're employed that they can practice their chosen art in the most fulfilling way. Blaming actors for auditioning for parts or for a director's casting decisions (that are out of their control) disrespects the craft and spirit of acting.

Zorro takes place in 1821, there were no “Latinos” back then as there was no such thing as “Latin” America, only the Spanish Empire, Portuguese Empire & French Empire that had lands in the Americas. Technically only real “Latinos” are the people of Spain, France, Portugal & Italy (Romania no so much) & their descendants around the world particularly in the Americas. Latin America wasn’t even mentioned until Napoleon III who wanted to get control of Spain’s former lands as he invaded Mexico & installed an Emperor of Mexico. “Latin Race” was to differentiate from other Europeans like the Celtics & Germanics. Latins were Caucasians (Roman Empire) not Natives of America or Black people. This like the Hispanic word first used in the U.S. 1970’s Census is misused by the United States & now the world.

I often see people from Wales, Scotland and Ireland with darker features and probably a lot of actual Latinos have ancestry from these areas. I know I do, because I recently found out I have Welsh ancestry and I am a Latina. It would have been nice to have had more representation, back in the day, but at least nowadays we have many Latina role models, to look up to. And anyway, it was a Hollywood problem, that they didn't cast Latina actresses, not hers.

Looking back, there were prominent Latina roles given to Catherine. Imo, I think Latinas should have been cast. It wasn't that long ago. I remember when J.Lo was cast as Selena, there was outrage from the fans that she wasn't Chicana. In fairness, many Latinas auditioned. J.Lo, a Puerto Rican actress, was chosen based on talent, by Selena's dad, the producer. The 1 thing he insisted on was that Selena's voice be used, not J.Lo's. Catherine's husband, Michael Douglas, boosted her career. Moving forward, more Latinas should audition for all types of roles. Take a chapter from J.Lo's and Whoopi's playbook. Thanks, Karine, for your insightful portrait of Catherine Zeta Jones. ❤❤

In her first film, "1001 Nights", Catherine Zeta-Jones played the role of "Scheherazade". Nobody complained that she was not from the Middle East.
In France, leading roles of Arab or North-African people are often played by actors and actresses from other parts of the world, mostly from the French West Indies, or South Europe (Italy and Spain) or Jewish people.
Artistically it's all right, they were the best choice. But actual North-African or Arab actors and actresses could have been cast, all the more so that leading roles are rather rare in French cinema for them.

I think Zeta-Jones is a great actress, & it does help that she has an ethnic &/or indigenous look which is why she's able to audition or be considered for many roles besides roles for a white (Anglo Saxon) woman.
Secondly, your argument is what hollyweird or the industry used & still uses to keep out non-white actors. Hollyweird is white owned and has & had the money to choose their racial group that would benefit the most. That's why for roles that called for actors that were "extras," the industry hired white actors who were "madeup" to look and impersonate non-whites. And for major roles, the industry hired primarily prominent or well known white actors to impersonate with makeup for non-white roles, ie. Angelina Jolie portraying Daniel Pearl's widow, who is biracial & considered to be black. And meanwhile, there are many good and great biracial/black actresses, who could have done as a good if not better job portraying, Mrs. Pearl. Remember, there used to be the infamous "minstrel shows" in the US. Why do you think they were considered discriminatory & outlawed? In the past, there were also many actors of Spanish descent, Hispanic &/or Mexican background who had to change their names to English or Western European sounding names. They also couldn't reveal their Spanish or Hispanic heritage for fear of being marginalized for only extra or subservient roles, ie. Rita Hayworth
