I like to use worm castings to fertilize my houseplants. Great video and thank you. I look forward to your videos!!
Thanks Debbie 😄
That moisture meter is the best thing I’ve bought in long time so glad you told me about it ‼️‼️‼️💯percent worth it ❤. Oh my gosh I’ve been using my rain barrel water for watering them too
Glad you like it 😁
Thank you so much! Informative and straight to the point!
My pleasure 😁
So great to find your informative videos. Thanks!
Cheers Steve!
For the most part I think your watering advice by the season is right on. However, there are some plants which turn this on it's head! There are summer dormant plants which grow during the Fall & Winter. The only one off the top of my head is my Albuca spiralis, Frizzle Sizzle, but surely there are more!
You absolutely cannot place most houseplants outdoors in the summer when you live in a hot, dry climate so please pay attention to your weather! I’m in Southern California and it’s 109 degrees today which would kill most of my plants rapidly. My succulents and asparagus ferns and a few others stay on my patio all summer but even some of them are frying right now….sheesh! I did just up-pot one of my pothos today as it has grown such massive and long tendrils….I’m so proud!
109 degrees sure does sound warm! Your Pothos sounds great.
I was on board until you recommended leaving them outside in the summer. In the Pacific Northwest, this is great way to have to constantly combat pests, and to unintentionally bring even more bugs indoors.
Depends where you live I guess
To be fair, I live in Seattle and I put my cacti outdoors during the height of summer (after a transition period to ensure they don’t sunburn). They LOVE it
@@elisebarrett357 what’s the climate like in Seattle?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Seattle is classic Pacific Northwest-- moderately humid, very mild (but soggy) winters with no deep freezes, extremely long summer days that have been hotter and hotter with climate change. Pests can be an issue, but I find that a diluted neem oil spray + a good hosedown and dirt change before coming indoors generally takes care of the whole thing while providing a great start for the winter.
@@elisebarrett357 sounds a lot like Sheffield. Soggy year round with mild winters and summers getting hotter days due to climate change.
Great tips thanks so much for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Luv Luv Luv you ! I watched this 3 wks ago and repotted a Keke "rubber plant?" and moved it to a more sunny spot it has 2 new leaves (well one and a half ) I've watched hundreds of these and you really give the best advice.P.S. I don't think you look like Swedish Plant Guy but he's great too.
Awesome thanks very much. They say I sound like him too 🤷🏻♂️
I think the bonus tip depends pretty heavily on where you live. If I put any of my houseplants outside in my >20% humidity 110+ degree summer weather they will die almost immediately lol Even my snake plant is struggling despite it being in the shade. Even my autumn and winters end up being pretty dry and rainless. Stupid drought.
Sounds like a crazy harsh climate. Where do you live?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Shasta County California. It’s not always 110+ but we’ve had it here for like a week and I get very excited when the temp is in the 90’s because it’s like a break from the REALLY hot weather lol
Even my shaded succulents are dropping perfectly healthy leaves from heat stress.
@@DaenysT definitely a far cry from the drizzle we normally get in Sheffield! Though we did have 104 last week.
If you can't re-pot a plant due to lack of space - eg on a windowsill, can you cut the roots & change the potting medium, to keep the plant in the same pot? Thank you.
You can prune the roots yes. There is a risk of plant shock with some leaf drop though. What’s the plant?
Root pruning is truly risky, you face possible shock and death of the plant. Changing the potting medium really has no affect again it resorts to possible shock. You can prune the plant itself to maintain but eventually all plants become root bound
@@SXYKITTEN1974 plants are surprisingly resilient though
I’ve aggressively pruned roots - as in chopping off at least half of the roots and I’ve never had any problems. I’ve only had success as in a lot of extra growth.
@@JustJ0nathan I’ve started doing it more and results have been good!
Really interesting
All my plants go outside in the summer, my jades are in direct sun tho and they love it!
Great stuff 👍
Thank you so much, I keep my indoor plants on the porch and verandah and I didn't know about the spider mites. All my plants on one side of the house had tiny spider webs and were stressed. Thanks again for a great help.
Hope you get rid of them successfully! Good luck 🤞
I used an organic pesticide today and I am waiting to see how it responds. Your videos are just concentrated knowledge packs. Love them all. Its very relaxing to hear your jokes too.
@@wkjjwj cheers 😁
I got a helper who carefully wiped all the leaves , both sides, with a mild soap solution as well. Looks healthier now.
@@wkjjwj I need one of those!
Im was bad for under watering but my MM now tells me to water or not so thanks for telling me to get one.
Ah cool you got one. Great aren’t they!
@@SheffieldMadePlants dont know how you can really do justice to your plants without one if like me you have skin like a Rhinos bum lol
@@letshaveago2201 haha
What is that nifty little clip on light you were searching for pests with?
Sorry I really can’t remember. I think it came with a camera or something
All G💚💚D THINGS To Keep In Mind As Well...
Thanks 😊
What would you recommend for a ZZ plant? Mine is not rootbound since I repotted it a couple months ago. I water whenever the first two inches of soil are dry, or thoroughly dry, since I know this plant is drought resistant and like a succulent, sometimes going 2 weeks without watering. I use liquid fertilizer, but not right now because we are about to enter their dormant phase. Basically, my plant looks very healthy, only problem is that it doesn't grow much.
I don't have issues with any of the things in the video that you mentioned (I believe) and don't know what to do to encourage growth.
Thanks!
I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. Like you say this plant is a super slow grower. Mine didn’t do anything for a year until it sprouted a brand new stem in the last month. I water very infrequently, maybe even once a month. A brighter spot might encourage it to grow quicker. Where have you placed it?
@@SheffieldMadePlants my room is VERY dark and has little light, but I thought these plants were okay with that. Maybe not?
Thank you for your quick response! Your videos are really helpful 😊
@@kuririvera973 yes they do fine in low light conditions. Your plant will happily sit there but it won’t grow quickly. Glad you like the videos 😁
Hello uncle my name is nisha i am from India
I brought a brahmi plant first it was growing in small pot then I planted it in big pot with mixture of manure and soil but it is not growing
Should I put my new small (young) plants outside during summer or should I keep them on their place inside? I can imagine that this might be better since they got use to this place
Also one of my plants had dry brown spots, what does this mean?
Small and young might be better left where they are. What are they?
I already killed two ficus elastica plants. I have one left that just isn't growing. I live in Norway and during summer it's light 24/7 ( I bought it a few months ago) so it can't be lack of light. It's not rootbound either.
It did push out a few leaves before it just stopped (it was the same with my elastica plant, but It ended up getting root rot)
I water when the soil is dry. No signs of pests. I am at a complete loss.
How strange. You'd think overwatering if it had root rot. They like a dry soil.
Hi. This topic is interesting and important but one note -
I think you should have distinguished between two scenarios. The first - When there are no new leaves but the existing leaves looks good. The second - when there are no new leaves and the existing ones looks bad. Each scenario - whats the possible explanations.
P.s. love your energy and good vibes
Interesting. Might go into more detail on that in a future video. Thanks for the tip
@@SheffieldMadePlants As you know lots of my plants have had or still have problems, (the joy of buying cheap plants!), for me i know i have a problem sometimes just lack of water all the way to crown rot, all things i can see, however, if one of my plants was not showing new growth but otherwise healthy im not sure i would pick up on that for some time. My small collection of some 40 to 50 plants and work mean i would only notice the second Scenario in our friends comment. As always im happy to improve my keeping ability and look forward to any content you post thanks for the great work!
@@letshaveago2201 looks like you’re doing a great job rehabbing your plants, they all look great
My house plants have black on the edges of the leaves which causing it. I just got it at the store about 23 days ago and it has not needed to be watered but the these are turning black on the antenna I would like to dry out add I don’t know what’s causing it.
Could be a few things. Inconsistent humidity, too much/too little light, soggy soil, pests, disease...
Im completely new, and have grown the following items, need advice on how to care for them
1. Lettuce
2. Green coriander
3. Tomato
4. White and red radishes
5. Ladyfinger
6. Bunching onions
Sorry not got any experience growing those. I'm more into houseplants. I'll point you in the direction of epic gardening.
@@SheffieldMadePlants okay thanks
Maybe ill take up indoor gardenig after exams and follow all the great tips you give
When you bottom water, how do you know how much water to pour in there? And do you just let it sit until the plant soaks it all up or do you come back and empty the extra water?
Give it about a third of the volume of the pot of water. If water is still there the next day I pour it out.
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks!
From expirience I know that when u have too big pot, plant won't grow. I like to keep my plants in really small pots, I have to water them and give them fertilizer more often and in smaller portions, but they grow like crazy then
Thanks for the tip 👍
Great info - thanks! I noticed you water many of your plants from the bottom.
Yes I do and I made a video all about it 😊 ruclips.net/video/WDQmvBDvR_0/видео.html
I've got most of the plants you showed in your video 💚Have you ever tried to fertilize with diluted iodine?
I've not. Good is it?
@@SheffieldMadePlants IT actually is. It's not only fertilizing but Has antifungal properties and its killing mealybug insects. Its boosting the growth. 40 iodine drops on 10 litres of water. You put the mixture as close to pot edges as possible - even better when soil is already moist. Repeat after 4 weeks. I use it june-july.
By the way i'm new to your chanel And i'm defo staying for longer! Really enjoy your videos, very informative.
@@katarzynawalczak3901 Thank you very much Katarzyna!
I have a palm for years, but it won't grow half dead, change the container, still the same, what I am going to do with it?
Hard to say really? It’s getting enough light water and nutrients?
Thank you for replying.
It sit in west facing balcony, didn't feed it in case I will kill it, water weekly. Oh I am in Sydney.
hmm my 2 ficus microcarpa are not growing as fast , would that be because of the time of the year?(the only thing I haven't gave it was fertiliser)
Ficus plants do slow down dramatically during winter. Are they getting plenty of light?
@@SheffieldMadePlants they are facing a west facing window on a 4th floor of my flat, and it gets pretty bright and I did see that I maybe over water a little but I do try to work on that however I did change the soil and trimmed the roots and used dead leaves cut up in the soil for nutrients.
@@blooky102 probably just slowed because of the repot and root prune.
And I think there are termite in it pls tell solution😊
Sorry no idea on termites
@@SheffieldMadePlants if not termite what it can be
I even put manure with water in it pls tell sir pls
5 ways plant experts know their plant is rootbound 👉 ruclips.net/video/Y9xGk6Q6RlE/видео.html
Puting the plants outside in summer depends on where one lives. If you are in a very hot desert area, that will burn the plants.
Very true. Missed that point in the video 🤦🏼♂️
Our summer in Saudi Arabia is too hot and strongly sunny 🌞 that most plants die of heat😢😢😢😢 .
We usually keep our indoor plants under air conditions to thrive 🥵🥵🥵🥵
I can see that 👍
Banana peels thanks you helped me remember
👍👍
What is the plant in the thumbnail?
That’s a young Monstera Deliciosa
Just a comment if someone is watching your videos in the Southern hemisphere... When you say to place a plant south, it is the north for people living in the southern hemisphere.
Yeah that’s right. I don’t mean to forget you guys! Where are you?
Sheffield: don't listen to instructions given by random youtubers like me
Me: Ok *leaves*
Sheffield: Wait hold on...
😅
Well, I got too much humidity INSIDE it seems. At least for mediterranean herbs... Seriously, I'll always get milldew.
Where abouts do you live?
@@SheffieldMadePlants NW Switzerland at the border to France and Germany. Now, it's very dry, but we had recently some years that I can only describe as subtropical; causing trees to get covered in moss, metal things to rust and mold everywhere...
When I came to Switzerland, I didn't expect seeing bamboo, palm trees, banana trees and plants of the Mexican desert along with countless plants from Japan and China. Yet, they all grow there... We still have winters, but snow doesn't last and I've had winters where I could spend some time outside without a coat.
@@edi9892 wow didn’t know this type of climate was happening in Switzerland
@@SheffieldMadePlants Being unusually warm in winter is nothing new, but the humidity in the last few years was definitely unusual.
BTW: I think that it's called the Gubris-Tunnel. When you cross it in Winter, you'll see snow on one side, but not on the other. The tunnel isn't crazy long or steep, but you can have 20cm of snow on one side bringing traffic to a halt; on the other side, it has a mild 10°C... (usually dry, as precipitation stays on one side of the mountain).
@@edi9892 sounds crazy!
pls don't advertise conventional chemical fertilizer, organic fertilizer is much better for the environment (which is also made of plants :))
Yes , PLEASE ❗
Another amazing video I'm very amazing tits thank you for sharing
Cheers 😁
I live in AZ. I do not think your bonus tip applies.
If it’s in the shade it should be ok. Keep any eye on the soil etc
To big for its britcheslol
