This would've made an incredible series with multiple seasons. I respect that they chose to tell this story in a game but the cinematography and very wordy story makes me feel like this would've been better served as a more visual media instead of a game
My younger brother is my best friend, so the scene where Clive hugs Joshua's dead body and remembers the day they first met, baby Joshua holding his finger... That scene hit me so fucking hard I can't stop crying
Something about the post credits scenes are quiet touching. Magic is no longer exist and people are living peacefully, but Clive's struggles and journey are immortalized and remembered as a fairy tale written by Joshua. And then a melancholic rendition of the Prelude and Prologue together.
Seeing how both Clive and Ultima possesed and utilize the power of all eikons brings back memories of both Noctis and Ardyn as they also wield the power and weapons of all lucian kings, which make it similiar
I feel like this is more of a hopeful/bitter sweet ending then a super sad one. Yeah it’s sad that Clive dies, but he dies ending hundreds of years of slavery and misery. It was beautiful watching a person who felt so much guilt and regret find hope again, and actively fought for a better tomorrow
It is by no means certain that Clive is dead. He may have survived and it was he who wrote the book under his brother's name. I remind you that it is his voice that opens the game.
@@nickywan123 Clive just cleans the blood from Joshua's body, he closes his wounds but those have already killed him. After that, Joshua shows no signs of life and his body disappeared with the Origin. Dion and Joshua are dead, Clive is the only one we don't see dying. The developers have confirmed that his fate was deliberately left uncertain. Knowing Clive, you think that if he had revived his brother, he would have made no gesture, no movement, no word to indicate that he expected him to wake up (and Joshua makes absolutely no movement nor any gesture suggesting it) ? That he would have simply turned away from him, without another word or look, to destroy the Origin, without thinking of sheltering him first ? Because that is what is actually happening. Resurrecting Joshua to just let him disappear with the Origin the next minute seems quite counterproductive, doesn't it ? Knowing that bringing his brother back would probably have been his dearest wish at this moment, if there had been a single chance to make it happen, Clive's attitude would have been very different. He wouldn't have taken the time to hug him while reminiscing about their childhood (which only makes sense if Joshua is gone for good), he would have brought him back to life immediately. If Joshua was alive, all the scenes of Clive's emotion wouldn't make sense.
I can really appreciate Ultima sticking to his shtick all way through to the end. No real congrats or a hint of regret or understanding, just "lol you didn't win, enjoy your dying world, losers".
The post credits book by "Joshua" seems to be the strongest evidence Clive survived. Joshua states very clearly in the game that the power of the Phoenix cannot resurrect someone. So Joshua could not have survived to write the book. Then the only person that would write the book in Joshua's name is Clive. This perfectly ties in to Clive's promise to Harpocrates to write a book about his journey, and how the story begins and ends with Clive narrating with an author's voice.

I am not seeing how people say Clive is dead. In a quest Jill says "no matter how terrible the night, dawn would always come. That you would always come for me ." We saw that he started to petrify but when it showed at 1:14:14 we dont see it creep up anymore. Cid has petrification too on his arm but it didnt kill him. The camera pans to the moon, we then see Metia beside the moon where jill has prayed before a few times to metia asking for clives safe return, the people of Valisthea consider it to be a messenger that hears the prayers of the people and delivers those prayers to the heavens. The first scene of the 2 of them alone together jill prays to metia, The last shot of clive is panning up to the moon and metia, jill runs off crying after the star goes out, but I believe that to be the answer to her prayers. The next scene we see Jill when dawn comes and she Is looking out at the water then we see a look of relief on her face. if Metia was just random why is it brought up multiple times its not pointless. ** I feel like they also make it a point for jill and clive to have the come back to me theme going on. then clive says "and thus, did our journey end " clive speaks at the beginning like hes telling a story and the last words are his as well. Which brings up the post credits scene. Didnt yoshida say something like nothing is random or something like that? The have the hair colors of jill joshua and clive, the book says Final Fantasy by Joshua Rosfield. So I see some people say that joshua is alive. Joshua has said, the phoenix cannot bring people back to life just heal wounds. I believe what we saw was clive cleaning his brother up or something. Idk I wouldnt leave my dead brother lookin all dead. There is a quest where someone tells clive he hopes one day clive can put down his sword and pick up a pen and tell about his adventures. Clive responded but I forgot what he said. Clive also took on Cids name when he died, who is to say he is not honoring his brother by putting joshuas name there as well. The book is called final fantasy and clive gave a final fantasy line to ultima when joshua was already dead.

For people who are confused about the fate of Clive, If you remember the final scene between Clive and Jill at the flower field, Jill says, "I realized that no matter how terrible the night... dawn would always come. That you would always come for me. And you have. Again and again". This scene along with the praying to Metia, you can analyze that Clive eventually safely returned to Jill. Yoshi P just doesn't put stuff in the game for no reason. Everything is there for a reason as he has said.
I'm not so sure about that. The scene of her looking at the sunrise could very well just be implying she has *hope* Clive will come back, but I don't see much evidence that he does. He's actively petrifying on the beach--I think he's probably dead.
@@AgentNounYoshi P put in a scene were trh love interest hopes he comes back but he's just petrified off screen? Nah bro. Even their theme song Moongazing implies he comes back. Also just his left hand was petrified. Same thing happened to Cid but as long as he didn't use magic he was fine. Clive removed all magic from the world so he shove fine besides his left hand, which is the hand he always use to do spells with ironically.
The combination of using all of the eikons during the final phases of the fight is peak video gaming experience. The visuals are stunning in this game.
@@artcorbeau oh don't be a dick. It's a great boss fight, more than worthy as a final boss, and the only "scripted QTE fest" are the sequences in-between the phases. I don’t know if you did this intentionally but I love how you’re using shiva Phoenix and ramuh symbolizing the friends that Clive had made across his journey. And the dreams that he must’ve fulfill. Again, I don’t know you did I intentionally, but I just noticed that.
Its who we are. We fight. We survive. We endure. We don't need a reason. We are imperfect creatures. When we stumble, we reach for a shoulder to lean on. When we fall, we stand back up. Oh wow the final boss model is very similar to Raktapaksa. The revenge of Eden 6 from ffxiv. We know for sure some of the dev team actually worked on that.
I'm so tired of my Final Fantasy protagonists dying a tragic and painful death. I was miserable the last time, and I'm miserable now. Both FF16 and FF15 had their heroes make the ultimate sacrifice so that the sun could rise on their dark world. And the song that plays while Clive is lying on the beach... I'm in pain man.

Man when Clive countering Ultimas eikon abilities with his and his friends and family screaming something is so badass, its just like he said - he could never done it alone, only with the help of all those people he met. I gotta say this because i've been seeing people spew lies about the endings meaning everywhere be it comment sections or brainless articles by the likes of IGN, anyone that unironically believes clive died is really grasping at straws. Just because FF16 is a dark game doesn't mean clive has to necessarily die. Here's some points to consider: -First and foremost, Jill, her reaction at daybreak. If you saw/played through the flower field cutscene you'd know that to her daybreak means clive coming back to her. That's a symbolism and symbolisms are ALWAYS meaningful in FF games. Also the sigh of relief she made and the smile wouldn't exist if she saw anyone except clive. Jill herself is the biggest proof that clive survive and came back for her. On that same scene when we see the sun rising you can clearly see a boat slowly approaching the hideout on the middle-left of the screen if you pause on 38:51. It's between the 3 rocks. Pair that with Jill's reaction and it's pretty obvious that this is Clive coming back. It can't be joshua because 1) jill wouldn't be relieved to see joshua instead of clive she'd just weep more to the confirmation of losing her SO and 2) because we know phoenix can not revive dead people, it can only mend physical injuries. Clive made a last ditch attempt to save his brother but it was futile. -Secondly there's the metia star. The wishing star that jill always prays to for clive's return. It's disappearance meant that jill's wish was finally granted. She initially misunderstood and started crying but upon going outside and seeing him come back she probably understood what happened. Metia granted jill's wish to bring back clive and it disappeared in doing so. The existence of the star and the fact that it grants wishes has been known and foreshadowed since the very start of the game where Jill was as always praying to it for Clive's safe return. -Thirdly let's look at clive himself when he was at the shore. Due to exhausting his aether he starter turning into stone shown by his fingertips. It was NOT progressing on its own and it only got his entire hand when he tried to use magic. His hand was petrified and it stopped there. We've seen Cid losing his hand to petrification and the progression stopped there. We also saw cid lose his entire ARM to the petrification and it still didn't kill him. It's obvious that clive just lost a hand. Then he passed out due to exhaustion. A DLC idea would probably be clive's struggle to get back to the hideout. -The after credits scene. We see two kids looking like clive and joshua. Those are clearly clive's descendents waaaay into the future and the book is most likely written by clive himself. He told hypocratus in a side quest when he gave him a pen that someday he will write something. THIS BOOK is the something that clive decided to write and he credited it in the name of his brother so that his name would not be lost in time. The exact same way he used Cid's name after his death. He did it to honour his fallen brother just like he did it to honour Cid. -Lastly, the narrator of the story is clive. The beginning and the end it's always clive narrating the story making it seem as if he's retelling it to his kids or something. That just wouldn't exist if he died. Honestly i wrote way more than what is needed. Anyone that has played more than 1 FF game would know that clive is alive simply by the "when the dawn breaks , you come back to me" jill line and the dawn in the ending. That symbolism is enough to know clive survived. Symbolisms aren't new in FF games and they are never unimportant. Anyway if your headcanon says clive died so be it but that will always be headcanon. Too much proof says clive is alive at the end. It really sucks that due to this game's action nature it has attracted a crowd that's not used to FF's storytelling style and they all miss the clues and symbolisms and proceed to spread misinformation. I kinda hope the devs themselves made it a bit more clear for players that are not long-time FF fans and can pick up on the clues.
Yeah no kidding even i ended up beleving ign and wikipedia lies if you want to trust any valid source then its the veteran fans of this franchise a lot of player i feel like are new in this franchise when i started my ff journey they already gave a trailer for ff7 remake so its surpise that a lot of people have only found out these only in recent years good thing is we have lovable fans like you brother
Damn, Yoshi-P and CBU III does not need to go hard on the final boss battle. This is probably one of the most epic final boss battles in gaming history. Soken never fails to orchestrated such an epic OST. Ben Starr's performance as Clive Rosfield is such a masterclass in voice acting. Him crying to Joshua brings tears to my eyes. What a masterpiece.
So I was right to assume that Ifrit's mission was to destroy the crystals and the other seven Eikons were guarding each crystal to prevent Ultima to gain power. That's why the Eikons are called wardens of each element.
Not really. While you're right about Ifrits mission, the other eikons weren't supposed to guard the crystal to prevent Ultima from gaining power. On the contrary, they were supposed to willingly give power to "Mythos/Ifrit" to ensure the destruction of the world. The awakening of Will/Logos in humanity ruined that plan as only Odin willingly served Ultima while the others had to be tricked/forced/ driven to madness in order to let Mythos absorb their eikoncic powers
You know what gets me..... both Ultima and Bhunivelze are just alike, both are deities who are both perfectionists when it comes to humanity achieving more than expected so they try to destroy them only to get defeated in the same manner by the power of humanity's sheer courage and will.
@@nicogalaxI mean it is cliche yes but at least Ultima is a more fleshed out enemy. Buni was good but in the end he was an innocent child doing a tantrum ever since he killed his mother and while the lore of the Fabula Nova Crystallis is quite good, in the end it failed in many areas when it was presented as unlike XVI lore, XIII took a more passive approach to that until they realised they effed up and tried to fix that in Lightning Returns. Here in XVI the lore of the god and world is part of the narrative, it's what fuels the story and while cliché in a way is better presented by a villain who is close to a Human than a God. Overall I really loved XVI because it never feels like you are on your own tru all the story, it is a real nice experience and I am glad they decided to put people who know how to storytell right because XIII while nice is a mess story wise and then XV was so incomplete the game felt quite differently if you played it on day 1 to the experience you get when playing it nowadays with all the extra info like the novels and such.

This ending sucks. Clive appears to have died, but symbolically with the sun rising one could interpret that it's implied that he makes it back alive, but we never see it. I hate ambiguous endings, is it too much to ask for to see Clive and Jill happy and together? Seriously wtf.

Absolutely loved this ending. I’m not a fan of protagonists dying in the end, but this was done so well.. until that post-credits scene happened and that theory dropped that Clive is using Joshua’s name. I’m on that cope that Joshua survived and continued Clive’s legacy, but with the Harpocrates sidequest, the fact you can’t revive someone from death even with the Phoenix’s powers, Jill getting calm with the sun rise, that whole death scene with the flashbacks, and Clive taking his name in honor like with Cid… please no.. Like I’m coping so hard, Clive can’t write he lost his writing hand….. I wanted Joshua to LIVE, and Clive had the most PERFECT death. I hate ambiguous endings…
The Ending is very mysterious. Really I don't get why Clive died after he used his invincible power? And what for he used it? But the whole story is very nice. Clive always wanted to protect Joshua and vice versa. Jill is a very kind girl who always willing to accompany and help Clive to settle his mysterious problems.

When Clive starts lifting his hand, only his fingers are petrified. Then seconds later, his whole hand is. With the framing, Jill and Torgal's reactions (remember Dominants can feel the aether of other Dominants, even when Clive has "absorbed" their primal) and everything else, it's sadly not difficult to tell if he lived or not. the post credit scene at the end shows their descendants decades later, clive revived joshua at 1:10:35 and joshua wrote the book final fantasy at 1:19:29
Clive survived, its why Jill went from crying to smiling. Tho his arm got petrified since he used up everything. Joshua did too and wrote the book. Then we get a time skip so long Eikons and Crystals have become legend. Overall a bittersweet ending since technically they are all dead due to the timeskip oof.
Square really puts his hardwork to this game arts especially the story telling of it. It's story about humanity hardships, compassion towards others, self sacrifice and many more againts a gods who is tyrannical towards humanity which avert his eyes to the real problem to world he created and just simply wipe out all living being just to solve the problem. And the ost is so epic is combination of classic opera choir with modern music especially in 56:18.
Summary: -Clive defeats Ultima after his brother Joshua died. -Clive revives his brother Joshua using Ultima's power and destroys the source of magic: the crystal. Joshua remains unconscious but is alive. -Clive seemingly died on the beach for using this power. -Jill cries knowing about Clive's death. -Fast forward to a very distant future with no magic: Joshua wrote a book about Clive's efforts in a book named Final Fantasy.
The phoenix was stated to not be able to bring someone back. Clive just healed joshuas wound and Clive ended up surviving while Joshua did die. Clive used Joshua’s name on the book so his brothers name will be remembered. And only Clive’s hand turned to stone because he tried using magic. We didn’t see it progress throughout his body and in a side quest it was stated Clive wanted to write a book as well.
@@Shinstuh clive didn’t just use the phoenix to heal Joshua, he used all the power of ultima’s aether that he just sucked out of him minutes before that and then he literally casts another spell to fix the world right after that. He definitely revived joshua
@@CyaSpaceCowboy it was stated earlier in the game that the phoenix can’t bring people back. Also it was never shown anywhere that Joshua wanted to write a book about any of this. And doing the whole montage of their life just for him to be revived would be pretty stupid. But Joshua did die, the phoenix can’t revive people
@@Shinstuh Clive didn’t use the phoenix to revive him I just said that. He used ultima’s aether. You can clearly see in the lore screen that ultima’s whole goal was to use Clive’s body to cast a powerful “Raise” spell to revive his entire race. He could’ve easily used that power to revive his brother, and then fix the world right after, which he did.
@@CyaSpaceCowboy not sure if Clive would’ve known how to cast a raise spell when he just got the power, plus the healing spell he used over Joshua looked like the phoenix’s power. I don’t think after what we saw in the end he’d even try and revive him. Most likely he’d not want his brothers body to be desecrated in its last moments and why would he destroy the entire place if his brother was alive in there as well and unconscious. We didn’t see clive come ashore with him so then joshua must’ve drowned if he was alive. Even if Joshua did live or not in the end he didn’t write the book. We hear Clive narrate and he has a side quest that mentions him wanting to write a book and that he’d need a name for it.
This might be me but I'm kinda confused about the ending? So everything we get to play is just a book told by the author(aka joshua) or did the event actually happen and Joshua just banked on everything? Now did they really pull of another ff15 by having the main character just off himself for the world?
The implication is that Clive successfully wiped the world of crystals, magick, eikons, all of it as he intended. And that SOMEONE with knowledge of the events of the game either wrote a book or dictated it to someone who wrote it in a pen name. Also, the fact that no no one even REMEMBERS magic existing shows how much time has elapsed.

The most important side quests are "Priceless" along with "A Tail to Tell" Both played will explain the meaning of the dawn seen end game and the book, written by cid rosfield. "A Tail to Tell" "when the day comes, I'l certainly have a lot to write about" is what clive replied to Haprocrates after his encouragement to pick up a pen. Harpocrates is all-knowing as the game claims, but opting choosing to delve into the intimacy side of pheonix and ifrit(older brother), chances it's more likely Clive. There's a point in the game where Joshua clearly stated that his eikon's power could never bring someone back to life. I believe endings should be what the players choose for themselves as it's the current trend for recent games; completing all the necessary will give you the true ending. In Priceless, Japanese language; Jill likens Clive as the dawn who will always come for her without a doubt, said that's the part she likes about him and she confessed to him. Clive who loves his brother more than cid, should probably have higher chances that he would honor his brother's legacy. But, endings are arbitrary nowadays, it's a gamer's pick. cheers!
If the protagonist is still alive, put some reliable pictures, if he is dead, put some dying farewells, and move towards death under the gaze of his partners, wouldn't it be more possible to render the sadness to a climax? Now it's like I'm painting a sad ending, but I don't say it explicitly, to pity you. It made me very sick, and I didn't feel the hope of facing the future but nothingness and anger
This is like the most hopeful ending I’ve seen in years. Sure the protagonist dies, but he dies ending hundreds of years of slavery and misery. We see his friends and family mourn him. His friends thank him for the sacrifice he made so that they can have a better life, it’s beautiful.
Contrary to what people say of Metia losing its light meaning that Jill wish came true I think is totally opposite, Jill first started crying when she saw Metia loosing its light, death is oftenly associated with light dying, then when the dawn she remembers that Clive will always come for her and probably feels that he's alive and that's why she looks so relieved (Clive was also able to feel that Jill was alive when she was kidnapped by Barnabas).
Could be both really. The rules of magic in the world imply that magic comes with a cost, Metia granting Jill's wish causes it to vanish (or it just vanishes due to magic leaving the world). She's clearly freaking out about it (plus likely not being able to feel Clive's presence) until she sees the sunrise which reminds her of Clive's promise. Also I'd like to throw in that Torgal howls, not whimpers or cries. Howling is used by wolves to call out to their pack, in this case Torgal is calling out to Clive (searching or because he senses him). If CBU3 really wanted to kill Clive I think there were better options to do so on screen. The themes of the story just don't suggest he's dead to me. The Metia wish route does give SE an out for Clive to keep his powers in a DLC/XXVI-2 scenario too (for purely gameplay reasons). I could see and XVI-2 being about Clive fighting his way back to Jill and the others from wherever he ended up.
Nah Clive didn’t make it sadly & died, Torgal completely confirms it. Spiritual connection and him howling shows that Clive really is alive and well, and makes it back to Jill in one piece.
@@andrewlucero1624 I think the ending we have in the game is just a neutral ending, because the good ending is actually in the novel “Dawn of The Future”

A lot of emphasis on Jill praying for his safety throughout the gsme. Clive wrote the book under Joshua name so that he’s never forgotten. He even says to Harpocrates in a side quest that he will eventually write a book. If you don’t do Jill and Joshua side quests you will miss on these things. Overall 10/10 story, definite GOTY for me.
There is no boat at all in that scene haha. On another note, the achievment you get for beating the game is called "Falling Star" with a description of "Fulfill a legacy" which implies that Clive did indeed die.
@@nicogalax Maybe they lazy in making an orginal story, I think. I agreed with you, the story of this game is just another clone of XV and VII. Gameplay and combat ard still fun, and better than XV, but not as good as VII since we can only preform action for Clive only
people saying Clive used Ultimas + Pheonix power to revive Joshua but it's clear even he knew that wasn't possible, why would he sit there holding him and grieving for him for 2 minutes instead of just resurrecting him immediately and making sure he was okay?
I gotta say this because i've been seeing people spew lies about the endings meaning everywhere be it comment sections or brainless articles by the likes of IGN,
anyone that unironically believes clive died is really grasping at straws. Just because FF16 is a dark game doesn't mean clive has to necessarily die.
Here's some points to consider:
-First and foremost, Jill, her reaction at daybreak.

I also admit one thing.... Clive gave Ultima that glass jaw with that Titan-powered punch to close out that long exciting final boss battle🤣

Yet, it's a fitting end.
According to official Wikia, Clive's fate is uncertain and open to interpretation. It was never stated that he died in the end. It's a fantasy world and anything is possible, tidus died in ffx but returned back to life in the sequel. #finalfantasy

Summary:
-Clive defeats Ultima after his brother Joshua died.

The most important side quests are "Priceless" along with "A Tail to Tell"
Both played will explain the meaning of the dawn seen end game and the book, written by cid rosfield.
"A Tail to Tell"
"when the day comes, I'l certainly have a lot to write about" is what clive replied to Haprocrates after his encouragement to pick up a pen.
But, endings are arbitrary nowadays, it's a gamer's pick. cheers!

The ending of Final Fantasy XVI is very tragic…
But well written and well presented, that's what it makes it good. FF15 only did the presentation part right, at least now they got it correctly.
But it isn't empty and incomplete like FFXV.
Tragic ending is like the standard in this industry. You must have 1, be it as an alternative ending.
Please tell me that clive is aliveness somewhere I can’t accept that hes gone
@@Zero-mn8btIt's up to everyone's interpretation. But the bottom line is, his fate is unknown in the aftermath.
This gave me asura’s wrath vibes.
Nah Clive didn’t make it sadly & died, Torgal completely confirms it. Spiritual connection and him howling shows that Clive really is alive and well, and makes it back to Jill in one piece.
