Yuval Harari with Dan Ariely: Future Think-From Sapiens to Homo Deus

  • In his new book, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, Harari examines what might happen to the world when these old myths are coupled with new godlike technologies such as artificial intelligence and genetic engineering. What will happen to democracy if and when Google and Facebook come to know our likes and our political preferences better than we know them ourselves? What will happen to the welfare state when computers push humans out of the job market and create a massive new “useless class”? How might Islam, Christianity and Judaism handle genetic engineering? Will Silicon Valley end up producing new religions, rather than just novel gadgets?

I agree that he was made to look into his own valid assumptions and seek more clarity on what his research as a historian of humans, to come out with more scepticism, than being defensive, as in normal debates! Simply original and profound to make us to think & think to search for better answers for the present context & its contradictions, we face as humans and as thinking Society 👍👍🎉 Your are really a refreshing thinker of 21st Century!! ❤️👍

There are lot of comments bashing Dan Ariely although he is clearly not just an interviewer. Yuval Harari is a great teacher, I would argue maybe even better and more important than Ariely. But if I was to chose between them for a mentor it would always be Ariely. I think he made some nice challenges to Yuval Harari and also exposed him a bit in a new way. There is no question that Harari has many answers that are based on statistics and empiric from history but he is behaving like an robot in a way. It seems that is what Dan Ariely was trying to tell him especially with the last question about the "best joke". It looks like Harary was aware of that the moment he stoped speaking. It was like he was saying to him You are a great wise man and You brought us summaries about so much regarding inteligence, consciousness , life , meaning and everything else and yet still it seems that You haven't really experienced it, being a human... There is an other interview in which Harari says that to him happiness is expanding knowledge and understanding truth and reality. But maybe that is not enough. Maybe we also need to intensely live it.

Hmm...I really enjoyed this discussion and got a bit surprised seeing the comments.
Yes Ariely was a bit mocking but if you heard his other talks he has this kind of humor and Harari took it as lightheartedly as it was meant I guess. I don't see your problem.

as someone who has read Harari's book and taken Dan's irrationality course, I can firmly say whatever rudeness some may sense is more a reflection about themselves - these are two world experts (so naturally a bit opinionated) agreeing and disagreeing on things with a bit of humor and the proverbial pulling of the leg; don't take stubborn sides and groupthink people - ideas no matter how good you may perceive left unchallenged become dogmas and ideologies

Even not so surprising to see how superficial and biased most people are when it comes to those they praise and attack. You can see in comments that those who like Mr. Harari (never mind the reasons) simply attack and criticise Mr. Ariely, though, Harari keeps giving cliche, easy and prepared responses. It's depressing that even when it comes to scholars and intellectuals, people still treat the same way they would have, in case of their favourite musicians or phone brands!
Please just analyse for yourselves. Read (if you don't mind!) and watch different scholars with different perspectives and form an idea for yourself.
People like praising those they know, those they are comfortable with and have accepted in advance, and sadly most of them don't even listen to their opposite sides properly.

It is a really entertaining chat between two tycoons of social science. Ariely successfully pushes Harari out of his comfort zone, trying to get new things of him, and some statements on his personal standpoint on religion. Entirely fair: given that Harari dedicated his second book to what seems to have been his meditation teacher, and he had just made a vegan statement at the beginning. It's good to see Harari dealing with both transcendental questions and some just as unsettling as "What is your favourite Joke?". Both guys are quite authentic, none of them easy going and show men. It's a blessing to have them around.

There seems to be a lot of Jewish humor in this which escapes us heathen. Something about the perfect argument. Good arguing style, too. The using the "depressed" label is really a joke. Harari's body language is eloquent enough to the contrary. Very enjoyable talk. Good job by Ariely to lure Harari away from his pre-meditated lectures.

I was told the end game. It is selective parenting. The 133 investment families that established IMF and run the macro-economic system to their benefit disagree on quite a bit. Actually everything but one and that is selective parenting. She said the goal is all babies are fixed at birth. I wonder if these "elites" who THINK technology will always be there have thought about a solar flare.
They have no idea what the future will looks like yet have it all planned out for us. This guy has said when the catastrophe strikes they need to step in with a global authoritarian rule. The same old recycled bullshit with a new coat of paint. Money changers control the serfs. If he sees us as animals we are expendable as long as we don't suffer? Well euthanasia does that. The things that have made societies secure and cooperative are nation-states, communities and the ability to provide for our families. He like many modern academics see humans as a cancer not something wonderful. They also go to Davos once a year Those who seek to control the world destroy it. There have ALWAYS been those who control things largely through deception and I see him as no different. I would venture to bet he is a loyalist to one of these families the narrative is to close to what they say is GOING to happen.
Those who believe they will tax them or bring about change need to understand they've survived for 86 generations. They are semi-autnotomous and global and literally above the law. They feel nation-states have outlived their usefulness and believe in corporate installed Oligarchies. ( That is the definition of a Globalist in the true sense, those who believe in corporate installed Oligarchies over nation-states.) As I stated before he is either in one of these families or is a loyalist pushing their agenda. You can bet their 100 estates and opulent lifestyles will not change but ours will.
She flat admitted man-made Climate Change is BS but they make billions of of the idea there fore promote it until recently. She said it is getting in the way of real science and has created to many soldiers marching and beating their drums for the cause. I was open to the idea until she told me the flat truth. I do see their family publications haven't stopped promoting the idea. This isn't to say pollution garbage and human waste isn't a problem because it is. It just isn't CO2 emissions but the Titans of Industry make billions off of exchanging carbon credits and have the added bonus of knocking out smaller competion. They couldn't get people to stop having children if they told the flat truth. Like he pointed out humans need a story..... I have a story. They are making economic zones and she said nation-states were created as a way to serve the banks and commerce. Beast of the Earth will soon be arising as they will be merging the 3 central banks of North America. Asia is the third that will coalesce in about 10 years. The bible doesn't mention the third so either it is irrelevant in creating the cashless society or things are going to start moving quickly but those idiots that wrote this 2,000 years ago were just backward homo sapiens that needed a story...

Do anything for money, Sex with everything, POPULATION CONTROL? How about Shariah and FGM, why now, there's Jonathan AC Brown right there at Georgetown University teaching that Slavery is MORAL because Mohamed owned slaves and you can't be more morally mature than that. Well, I don't think it was Jewish humour (partly because I am not Jewish and I still understood it ). It was just humour. "Nationalism has no solution to climate change"
First, if you are going to take that approach, Professor Harari, then you better show that there actually is climate change (where the word 'change' has a precise definition). Climate has been know to be changing since the beginning of life on this planet. In fact, the word climate presupposes change. As far as we know climate has never been static although it was slow to change during the Permian when all the land masses were together to form Pangea and there wasn't (as far as we know) the equivalent of the Gulf Stream to help regulate the world temperatures and weather.
Second, the right is not about nationalism; although, those on the extreme right can be nationalistic. That is a leftist meme. Joseph Stalin was prone to speaking about 'Mother Russia' for example. Same with the Maoists who developed a type of nationalism that was pernicious to the extreme. The current CCP is carrying on Mao's nationalist tradition (especially with the Uighurs). Don't forget Hitler, who was a leftist, socialist and a nationalist. Don't forget Mussolini who was initially a communist and then invented fascism, which is a special variant of socialism in which very big business is allowed to retain its ownership of property and is allowed with certain restrictions to do what it wants as long as it cooperates with the government in doing so. Mussolini came up with this form of government because he saw the economic catastrophes created by the Soviet Union and he realized that government bureaucrats didn't have the experience to properly run large enterprises. Only the business leaders had that experience. In any case, Mussolini was an arch nationalist.
Getting back to climate change, it has been pointed out time and again that the best solution to climate change is to do nothing at all. It is estimated that the cost of attaining 100% reduction in Americas 'carbon foot print' would only result in a change of 0.07° Celsius by the end of the century (For the temperature change see page 3 of A RATIONAL LOOK AT CLIMATE CHANGE CONCERNS found here: scienceandpublicpolicy.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/rational_look.pdf ) To accomplish this would cost up to 1 trillion dollars. If America does nothing then it costs nothing and if the temperature rise calculation is correct even a thermometer wouldn't measure the difference!!! Meanwhile, China is in the process of building 100 coal generated power stations! China is the biggest polluter in the world and nothing is done about it. China has made it clear in writing and in public speaking its plan is to replace the United States as the world's superpower. It is gonna have its way if the US wastes up to 1 trillion dollars on this global warming/climate boondoggle while China uses a similar amount to make itself more powerful economically and militarily. What is interesting here is that China was exempted from the provisions of the Paris Accords because it was considered a developing nation!!!??? China is the second largest economy in the world and is highly developed in science, medicine, and military power. Why did the Paris Accords allow this ludicrous exemption, professor? This is what you should have been writing about!
Professor Harari, one of the hallmarks of science is prediction. Give one example of a prediction that any climate change alarmist has made that has turned out to be verified. As far as I know, there aren't any. On the other hand there is ample evidence that the alarmists have been shown wrong every time they make a prediction. For example: thenewamerican.com/climate-alarmists-have-been-wrong-about-virtually-everything/
Actually, the alarmist, almost always from the left, have been wrong in other areas. For example: ruclips.net/video/5BqD5klZsQE/видео.html
Don't forget Professor Harari, the alarmists were predicting another ice age being imminent back in 1975. In 1972 these scientists wrote to President Richard Nixon to get funding to help stop the glaciers before they became a real problem. One of their 'solutions' was to drop ton after ton of carbon soot in the Antarctic to absorb the Sun's heat and thereby warm up the planet!!! [Interesting example of a true carbon footprint.] By the way, did the science of climatology instantly change between 1975 and 1985 when all of a sudden the earth went from 'The glaciers are coming' to 'Our planet is frying'. Nope!! No new science but there were political (tax related) issues that 'changed' the science. These guys are a one trick pony show, professor. So, NO, the left has no solutions despite your claim. They have grifts, scams, and swindles! Hopefully, your next book will be titled HOMO CORRUPTUS and will deal in detail with the issues I've just discussed.

Some accept the journey and some decline it. I think the more you can think in future and more clearly you understand how certain your quality of life is going to get affected long term makes a difference in decision.

Does anyone know where Mr. Harari addresses this elsewhere online or in his writings? That and the intriguing discussion of science as mainly aimed at control -- without much room to discuss the moral implications of this were both interesting beginnings of conversations I could have listened to for many more hours.

@20:00 you are lying. No such thing was said in the Bible. The story you're referring to is found in Genesis 17:16 "16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?"
    Genesis 18
10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh
So where is this lie you told @20:00
But what would you expect from two pencil necks who think they can create Homo Deus 2.0 better than what God has created. Same line as your father, kind of all lies, has told and desires...to be greater than God. You two have a rude awakening coming. I'd like to have a box of popcorn and watch as it unfolds.

Well of course the main value of science is power. To the extent that information (and therefore the truth) IS power. If you're curious and well informed (you know the truth), you're powerful. They are both closely linked together. That's all there is to the discussion. Information IS power. And power can be both good or bad, some people use their power for very good reasons and goals, some other use it for horrific ones. Science seeks the truth and therefore grants power to anyone curious enough to find it. That is it and there is nothing wrong with it either.

He used the word "control", but yeah, exactly, control or power is a result, but not the aim or agenda of science. It was a meaningless statement that most swallowed as some revelation here. LOL.

Mr. Harari is as eloquent and intelligent as ever... the interviewer however is obviously very intimidated by Yuval. He is so passive aggressive and competitive. Perhaps it is a cultural thing... nonetheless Yuval is so grounded and mature that it all moves right through him and he nails the points again and again. He is an Olympic thinker:)

As unexpected disruptive challenge or any significant change can't be taken over put an effect on our life, single entity is not allowed with resolution or stepping forward until others are participating collaboratively how powerful or influenceful it is. As money is one of impressive instrument evaluated at the modern society, people with success embody how rich they are. As for committing suicide, one is suffering from framed reality and one is desperately devouring wrecked news spread over. How desperate he may locked in, he keeps in meaningless life and he looks for alternatives for him to escape. Religion is spotting on someone because he wants someone over people to forgive his sins. As disruptive challenges, e.g. intelligence artificial make people afraid or threat to our value, we more rely on our imagination and creativity.

For a someone with such an impressive academic track record, Ariely seems surprisingly naive (e.g. re. the driving social forces behind science as a whole) and PC (e.g. when he balks at the word 'useless' when used of people or keeps insisting on the historic significance of the evil of Trump). I wonder if this is genuine or just anticipating what he thinks the average listener would want him to say.
I think people are right to complain a little about him: he overestimates his own jokes to the point even of repeating them (e.g. the one about Harari not having the right dealer), emphatically points out the biases of Republicans but not of Democrats in one of his examples, and talks quite a lot about himself (usually in ways that make him look good). If this was meant to be a balanced talk between equals, he didn't bring in his own expert thoughts enough (beyond mentioning a few very interesting but not entirely relevant experiments), if an interview of Harari, he made too much of a fuss about himself.

  • @ShalomFreedman
    @ShalomFreedman 6 лет назад +1

Harari is in a different league from Ariely but even as he thinks in a big way about the big problems in the long- term he does not deny himself a lot of 'cheap shots' warmly applauded by the herd-crowd. His remark about the Bible which is a foundation-document for all human religious, moral and literary understanding is a good example of this.

I truly believe Yuval's opinion about the true motives of science is accurate, the largest research funds go to academic areas which offer value in the form of control, and very little go to places that offer no control or control about unprofitable domains; e.g: the social sciences usually don't get as much funding as the more hardcore sciences (STEM) because they either offer little control or control over unprofitable domains.

In minute 12:25 Mr. Ariely mentioned the experiment of analyzing collaboration. I would challenge or suggest him, doing the same experiment changing money for other asset. Basically trying to avoid the additional forces that money creates, or imply. I used term additional forces, because we have been trained to believe money will solve all our problems, so our reaction to loose or win money is different in comparison to other asset. For this reason I would suggest to use other asset, to see if human collaboration swing as easy as Mr. Ariely mentioned.

07:00 As for the correlation of climate change denial and conservative thinkers, one could also argue to the contrary: "The purpose of a thing is what it does" (Stafford Beer). Climate change prevention, as it has been emphasized in recent years, goes in the direction of global governance. This may be the reason why it has been adopted by those who seek global powers.

    • @boliussa
      @boliussa 6 лет назад

+Irma though nations should really be able to work together and agree to some rule that is fair and reasonable without it having to be a global governing body. There could be voluntarily agreed upon things between nations.. like responsible nations have leaders that gather together and agree individually to control themselves. Rather than a bullying entity like the UN full of nasty gangs that votes against a country that has less voting power.

How about states and nations are IMAGINARY concepts, and only HUMANS can get along voluntarily. Nations/states per definition are NOT voluntary for the HUMANS suffering under them. (Taxation is theft by any other name). How about HUMANS get along voluntarily, and SCRAP nations, governments, religions, cultures and any other false and imaginary authorities, so we could finally have peace, prosparity and a rational and empirical base for getting along. Google voluntaryism.
