I'm 60 years old and I've known about and used the paper towel method back when I was about 15 years old, back in the 1970s. In fact I was germinating some seeds and didn't have any paper towels and I used toilet paper in a shoebox and it worked just fine. Back then the good stuff was usually called Columbian gold and Acapulco Gold, plus Hawaiian was also considered really top shelf. Also there was weed called sensimilla, which means no seeds. This is common today but it was a lot less common back then. The science has just advanced a lot over the years.
I do see a lot of usually young guys saying that the weed from 30 and 40 years ago was much better than what we have today. This is false and I know it is because I lived through that era. We did have some good stuff but trust me, it is much more powerful today from the selective breeding. The good stuff from today is derived from the good stuff we had back then. Well that's my history lesson for today told by an old dude.

And use paper towel method but place seed between paper and bag and place face down on top of fridge with a box on top for darkness. Leave another 24-48 hours tap root should be 1/4” to 1” long. Then plant into medium. I also use the clear solo cup inside a red solo cup to check roots and moisture. Cheers! 😙👌🏼💨

Keeping seed banks are awesome, they like tiny time capsules that saves genetics to strains and proper storage is important if viable or for bad times of disease or problems or grow falling out of productivity. Seed plants make the best mother plants or bigger production to flowering. Another thing after 7 or more generations of cloning out the genome of genetic diversity drops out or turn recessive or mutation etc. Another important thing is breeding to rebuilding quality to the strain genetics or furthering a particular traits. Good show God bless you and thank you for your passion for such beautiful medicine miracles plant and information sharing. 💜🌴 I keep flower garden seeds or harvest seeds or save next year of vegetables garden and flower gardens beds or crossing flowers too or nice to propergate yard plants too. I put my seeds in like a shot glass full of water for about 12 hours and then tap on it to see if it sinks, if it doesn't I give it a few more hours. I've heard that can tell you if it's even a good seed or not. If it does sink I will either just go ahead and plant it or do the paper towel method until there's a tap root. I'm about to try a root-on-rock cannabonsai so stunting the plant is kinda what you gotta do. I'll be trying it with an autoflower so I tried to use one with a longer growth cycle. Seeds add adventure I looked for a pheno I heard existed in a certain strain I liked!
It took me awhile to get it! In fact I got in the male form! Which I crossed with my female I had for years!
First thing I did was make a shit load of seeds using that male!
Still growing out for results! I have clones of some of my favorites too of course! So I
always have something ready! seeds are a unknown. I have seen both negative and positive results
But when you cross a winner in your own home! What is better brother!
You need stable genetics which is becoming harder and harder to find since everything went legal?
Certain strains are good for crossing and making seeds, practice practice and some more practice!
Seeds refrigerated in Tupperware with a jell pack is the way a lot of people save!
I have germinated 10 year old seeds many times that I stored!
But if you make your own seeds you just make more from the stored ones!
Just like vegetables and any other herb a lot of people use there older seeds to make a batch of newer vibrant ones!

Even in germination mode, the seed needs air. Also, toilet paper works best. A couple of tissues of tp. pour warm rain water on a shallow plate, let the tp soak and pour the excess out. put the seeds a square inch apart between sheets and cover the plate with tin foil. on room temp, it will hold moisture for the 3-5 days it takes for the root to come out. Cut tp rolls in half and squish them to shape the roll into a square. bury the root with your desired soil mix, leave the seed above the soil. You can put these square half tp rolls as many as you need on your tray that has as tall edge as the half tp roll. use a squirt bottle turned to mist for watering. when moving the plant to your grow pot, bury the half tp roll and the plant up to the cotyledon. This works outdoors, indoors, greenhouse etc. tp can also be used with hygro systems, the lift pump needs a filter though.

Just put the seeds in a small cup of water and put them in the cabinet for 3 days then once it develops a tale fill a solo cup with soil and create a hole with the tip of a pencil and then sprinkle some microriza in the hole and put it in taile down and cover with a little bit of soil then put it under a light and water it with a spray bottle and after 2 days it pops up and just keep watering.

my thought process is that a seed is more susceptible to pathogens / viruses / mold / fungus when they are germinating, so I've been using a water/peroxide mix just to kill off any microbes in the first 48 hours. But then I drop them into media and first water with a little bit of something like rapid start or recharge.

That's one of the negatives of the Auto's: can't clone, so if some seeds fail you can't make it up with more clones. Also had one seed that bloomed like a champ and another next to it that had buds but very leafy. Decided to make hash rather than smoke the leafy one.

I like to soak the seeds for 24-48 hours in distilled water with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide. Then plant them in the dirt about 1/4" deep. Pack the soil down gently. Mist 10 sprays 2x per day to keep moist not too wet. (use a humidity dome) Seedling should sprout in 2-5 days, maybe more so be patient. You don't need the hydrogen peroxide, but it helps soften the shell on older seeds that are more stubborn to germinate. If you don't pack the soil down the seed can move around and might fail. Also, if you don't plant it deep enough you may get helmet head when the seed remains attached to the seedling because there was not enough friction to bust it off. This can be removed carefully, but it's easy to damage the seedling as the membrane can be firmly attached.
For storage, I'm at room temperature 72-75 F. I'm thinking about using a wine fridge which would store at about 55-60 F
Also the wine fridge may be an option to store and cure buds. 72-75 F is not optimal for preserving the terpines.

Using solo cups I plant straight in a no nutrient soil 1/4in deep mist good then cover with another cup (misted) to keep moisture in. Then just keep moist until she pop's. The least handled the better plus dont touch with fingers especially stored seeds! The oils from our hands hurts the seed and will degrade faster. The outside skin like substance is what keeps the natural oils in the seed to keep it alive and once that outer shell (skin i call it i guess idk) is damaged it will slowly die. Ive never liked the paper towel method or water soak. What happens when you leave something like that out, even just water alone collects germs and other contaminates within hours so thats a big No for me but whatever works i guess 😐 Grow on 420 Fam!!

A basic seedling heat mat raises the temperature 10-15° F above ambient, so unless you're trying to germinate seeds in a very cool environment these can actually result in worse germination. There are models with built in thermostats, so if you really feel the need to use one get one of these, but for the average home grower these are unnecessary imo.
